TFF Moves 3: Son of TFF Moves

Hello for the third time old friends, and welcome new friends to The Fanfiction Forum. If you're here then you're interested in fandom, transformative works and fanfiction in particular. If you're here by accident, then you're in for an education.

Just so we're all on the same page: this is the third version of TFF, and we are now running the Xenforo forum software. Those of you familiar with Spacebattles, Sufficient Velocity and related sites will recognize the UI, and we're pleased to announce that functions we've wanted to implement for a long time come with the package. This includes:
  • Mentions
  • The alert system
  • A reputation system I don't hate
  • Following users
  • a tag system thank christ
  • Avatars are back!
  • and, just between you and me, the backend looks pretty nice.
TFFv3 is the best version yet. Or will be once we fix the following known issues.

First and most important we're down our usual array of smilies. Getting them back is our top priority. :p

But seriously: the forum currently isn't sending confirmation emails. If you are trying to register or change account information, the workaround is fairly straightforward: go to the official TFF Discord and scream at me @Watashiwa or @The Ero-Sennin to force the verification.

Yes really. Email works too (watashiwaonline@gmail.com || thesageoftoads@gmail.com), but Discord is faster. We're hoping to have this sorted out in the next day or two.

We're going to be collapsing some subforums and creating new ones. This is a project that we started on nTFF but never got serious about. Let's face it: fandom moves on, and today's big thing isn't necessarily tomorrow's. We are open to suggestions for new subforums, with the caveat that it has to be used! It's well and good to have a place for My Hero Academia, but what's the point if it never sees traffic? No content is getting deleted, but you might have to look for Akamatsu, Ranma and Sailor Moon under anime. Tags will help.

We're looking for at least one more moderator for our modmin team. @daniel_gudman and @chronodekar have agreed to resume their previous roles (thanks guys!), and while we're taking suggestions and applications, Ero and myself will be making the decision. We're looking for active posters who can step back from the heat of the moment and say when someone's actually out of line.

And as before we're putting new templates together. Never fear, the dark theme is coming. Soon. Promise!

Title ladder's kinda weak. I'm open to suggestions.

We'll be limiting signature image size to something reasonable. Please be considerate of your fellow users. :)

TFFv3 is on a paid server. We're NOT soliciting donations, but because folks offered in the past, we're considering ways of accepting donations to defray costs. If that's something you're interested in, 1.) thanks and 2.) we'll let you know when we know how we'll handle that.

Speaking of servers, we're a bit behind on forum software, so there might be a disruption in the future as we catch up, but we'll let you know. EDIT: Well that was easy. Xenforo 2 now.

Last and possibly most importantly, we're considering some new rules. Nothing concrete yet, and maybe it won't happen at all, but I'll tell you straight up what the guiding principle will be: Don't be an asshole.

...

Honestly that's pretty much what I want the new rules to look like. I still hate disciplinary action; don't be a dick and I don't have to. Pretty easy, yeah?

Aight that's about it. Returnees, the mustaches are in the usual place. Newbies, check your sanity by the door. You won't be needing that here.

Welcome to The Fanfiction Forum!

Do we currently have the ability to create threadmarks? I'm pretty sure Xenforo has the function but I've never used it before so I'm not sure how it works.

Just spent some time looking this up. It's a plugin for xenforo v1, but hasn't been updated for v2.

Boom. Forum back online. Avatar restored.

Goodness me.

How do we change the "Well-Known Member" or whichever title to something else?

Click on your name in the top right then on Account Details. Beneath your Avatar is a Custom Title section.

If possible, it'd be a good idea to send a message out to our existing members to let them know that TFF is up and running again with new software. I got an email but it looks like it's because I recently joined Discord.

I don't think I've seen more than 5 members on at the same time since we've come back which isn't much different from how it was before the change. The weeks we spent with it down likely didn't help either.

Maybe a preview of what it looks like, talk about some of features (and fixes like finally having avatars again) and the current discussion about forum reorganisation. Or maybe wait until its reorganised and then do that to properly show off TFF 3.0.

Edit: Aw, I just noticed that we can't keep multiple saved drafts like on Icyboards. That was a handy little feature.

Thanks for checking, btw. One day, I hope.

And there was me beginning to assume TFF was reduced to a discord page.

Not my call, but I'm in favor of waiting till things are re-organized. Or perhaps after a few more themes are installed? Still exploring xenforo settings and would be good to experiment without worry of load issues.

What do you mean by multiple drafts?

Before, you could write a bunch of posts and keep them saved on the forum without posting them. There was a section in your user options with a list of all the drafts you'd written that were stored indefinitely so you could open one of them up, add bits in or take bits out and finally post it.

I don't know how much other people made use of it but I found it pretty handy myself.

Only issue I forsee with this is the danger of never deeming it re-organized enough. After a certain point, we lose the ability to say 'we've moved and done new stuff!' if 10 months have passed, even if that 10 months got everything perfect and awesome.

If a consensus on how to reorganise is ever reached.

It may even be helpful to get some of those people back as they may have some good suggestions on the reorganisation.

Or it'll end up being useless noise that makes it worse.

Now I wish I could travel back in time and purchase from you instead. There were only 2 reaction/content ratings addons available for Xenforo v2. The one from themehouse and yours. It was a 50-50 decision for me on what to pick. In the end, themehouse was selected because in their screenshots, they had a "bad spelling" reaction, which felt useful for a community of authors.

...

Where were you when we did the move (to xenforo) anyway? Or ... have we just never announced it?

Heh, yeah Content Ratings is a bit bare bones on the screenshots; but is designed more to be a platform for integrating ratings/reactions into stuff.

Missed it.

I've been hilariously busy doing add-on & sysadmin work for Space Battles and Sufficient Velocity in addition to my full-time day job.

There are not enough condolences in the world to make that statement any less soul-crushing.
