Are they really that bad?
It even says so in the link. They ported the mobile versions of the game, which had some atrocious sprites used for that version. IIRC, there were quite a number of new glitches or old ones that were never fixed from the mobile, including at least one that could wipe out save data in FF VI.

Squeenix is probably pulling them because of their new FFI-VI anthology. I just want them to actually remake FFVI for once. No ports with an extra dungeon, no 'it's a remake but it looks totally almost identical except it's stretched to accommodate a new screen ratio', but an actual honest-to-god remake.

I am ashamed to admit that I have zero recollection of what the PSX port looked like, despite having played it. On the PSX, admittedly, so that was a very long time ago. I've read that it was re-released 10 years ago, but I think that was on PSN, and I've never owned a PS3.

EA might be planning in-game video ads

They say they're not planning on it, but they really have no goodwill to believe them. And of course people will still drop $70 on a yearly roster update.

The only way to guarantee they don't is to patent this and charge them more than they'd make for a license.

If it's just the sports games, then I say the player get what they deserve for supporting EA for so long.

Do they really make anything else?

Damn, ninja'd! Is anyone else a little disappointed that they didn't go with the Switch Pro name?

As far as I could tell from the trailer, it's an improved screen and stands for the most part. There wasn't anything about the hardware being improved.

Yeah, I realized that hours after I posted. Foolish me, not actually researching further.

Given Nintendo's history with handhelds, I doubt we'll see the Pro until 2024 at the earliest.

With games transitioning to digital nowadays, the value for stuff like these can only go up from here. A couple of years ago I saw a Gamecube copy of Resident Evil 4, still in its original shrinkwrap, with a list price of a few hundred dollars. Since it was an online auction site, though, there were no takers...mainly because no one believed that that was the real original shrinkwrap, straight from the factory. :D

It's helluva weird, because I've had the bad tendency to buy games and then never even open them up, let alone play them. Sooner or later, I'll probably find out some game I still have sealed is worth $1k+ new. Heck, I have a copy of Persona 3 FES still sealed (the collector's edition FES, that is)

What annoys me, and the reason I got out of the gaming habit, is not the prices per se but the outright bilking the makers do now. It used to be you could buy a game and keep using it no matter what, even without any patches or expansions, assuming you had the console or a system it was meant for still.

But once game consoles incorporated stores and digital expanded content, and required server access... that has no longer been the case for many many games. Many games either require sever access, or lock you out of some or even all of the game without it.

I recall a old Transformers game my brother and nephew were playing a few months back, and commented to me that extra content and some characters can only be played and unlocked with servers running, and tey were shut down.

I'll definitely be annoyed with the missed content. Some DS and Wii games already have content that you needed to access WiFi for (like Dragon Quest IX), and now I have to go through alternate methods. Imagine trying to buy DLC for a game in the future that has actual content, not just a skin, but the store is shut down. Or a patch, for that matter.

Inaccessible patches have persisted for a while, though, especially in PC gaming. I have a few PC games from the early 2000s whose latest patches are unavailable because the game makers went bust and saw their websites (with all support and patches) go off-line. Or they were bought out and the new parent company didn't bother moving the files over to their site before doing the URL re-direct.

bummer... I was always hoping there would be more animation works
Well, they don't actually say what they are. Could be new games, could be remakes, could be animation, could be a musical, etc. I was more making fun of other companies that love to either run their franchises into the ground by making mobile games or make gacha games and then ignore their regular games from then on.

Can almost guarantee there'll be at least one Rythm game.

Isn't that a given though? As far as I was aware, there's no form of DRM that doesn't negatively impact the performance of a game.
