Technically all of his works were tied together and mostly int he same universe though.

In any case we see continuations and remakes in anime and live action films all the time though... Legend of Galactic Heroes come to mind, as does The Type Moon Universe (How many versions of Shirou/Rin/Saber are we up to now?). For an older one there is Tenchi Muyo with all its various spin offs.

Most remakes are basically re-doing the story as it already exists, just with a (hopefully) bigger budget and/or newer art. Tenchi Muyo, El-Hazard, and GitS, as well as a fair chunk of what Matsumoto inspired (and other examples I can't remember), however, keep (mostly) the same themes, same cast, and the same setting, but the plot is completely different from one adaptation to the next.

And then there are spin-offs or complete re-inventions that keep the ostensibly same cast but have vastly different themes and feels from the original works, like Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA, the Rayearth OVAs, and the Escaflowne movie.

But anyway, this is wandering way too far off from the topic of this particular thread.

Double-posting is acceptable in this case.
