A believable reaction

We've all seen the veritable plague of fics where Harry is the boy who lived that gets abandoned by his own family because his sibling is the child who lived; then somehow is revealed as the real saviour and forgives his family; etc.

My challenge is to write a believable response where Harry tells them all to bugger off and goes his merry way, all the while enjoying himself. And the possible effects his response will have on his family.

I generally hate the whole 'not bwl...thats big Al, my asshole of a brother.'

And do you know why? Generally...they all fall into the category of "I'm sowy" "I forgive you."

This has the potential to be good. If I wasn't doing on IoW, I would totally do it.

On the topic of fics where Harry's brother is mistaken to be the boy who lived, I have a thought. For originality, why don't we NOT make the Potters into the new Dursleys, have James and Lily the fair and loving parents to both kids, etc? The rest can be up to author fiat, but I'd like to see the brother-who-lived idea without the Betrayed!Dark!Harry idea horning in from the start up.

Heck, on the subject of original variations to the brother-who-lived idea, why not make one where it's just that, and keep all else the same. Make a brother who's hailed as the boy-who-lived (mistakenly or not), kill off James and Lily as in canon, and send both to the Dursleys. Originality is not a crime you know...

First up, sorry about the necro, but this actually does add something to the thread.

Every brother BWL fic I've read has had Harry be secretly better than his brother at everything. How about we turn it around? One is hailed as the boy who lived - but when they go to Hogwarts, Harry is quite clearly superior in every aspect of magic. Slowly, people begin to decide that the boy who lived is in fact Harry. But oh shit. They had it right the first time. It's his brother.
