First thing's first.
You cannot see it, what with two monitors and the all of the internet in the way, but I'm flipping two big ass birds to Ryuugi and Daneel. It's like they just dragged a guy out of rehab and mainlined him some heroin.
Thanks much.

A Digital Fantasy
Prologue - (Not) The Only Game In Town
Matsuda Takato was, at first glance, an ordinary boy. Mouse brown hair, lighter brown eyes, and the easy smile all fourteen year olds have. A second glance wouldn't change much, except that one might notice his odd fashion accessory of goggles, or the fact that his eyes took on a reddish tint if you looked at them in the right light.
Takato also had several disconcerting habits, one of which was to vanish deep into a local park for hours at a time, just to squat in an old shed and stare at something only he could see. Today, however, he was not alone.
"C'mon, stupid. It's not like the gate's going to just randomly open up - and even if it did, we're not exactly prepared for that just walking home from school. Let's split." Shota Hirokazu was another brown haired young man. It freaked him out slightly to be the voice of reason right now, as he was usually anything but, but something clearly needed to be done. Takato was spending way too much time just staring at the slight red glow of the gate to the digital world. Still, as a loyal friend, he sat there, just shooting the breeze and trying to lighten up the atmosphere.
"But it could, right?" Kazu turned a harsh glare at the third and last person in the cramped space, Kitagawa Kenta, who flinched back, swiftly enough that it tossed his blue-black hair a bit, light reflecting off his glasses briefly. "Well, it has to open sometime, right?"
"Sure. But not today. We've been here for hours now." Kazu threw his hands up in the air in exasperation.
Kenta frowned back. "Well, it's not like we can just ask Yamaki. The government shut Hypnos down, remember? So we have to keep checking."Ø
"Check, sure. But we sit here for at least an hour every day. I want them to come back too, but I have things that need doing, you know? And it's not like Yamaki isn't trying, you know?"
"Kazu, I don't think you can fit that kind of equipment into an apartment. Hell, not even the building. The zoning laws wouldn't cover anything like yugoth."
Takato sighed and admitted defeat for the day. Kazu was right. The digital world wasn't just going to randomly throw open its doors one day. The digital creatures known as digimon that they'd had so many adventures with weren't going to just pop out and say hi without a certain amount of fanfare preceding it. In reality, Takato figured their first sign would be a wild one rampaging through downtown again, followed by a frantic few days of trying to contain things without their partners. But that didn't mean it felt right to just sit back and do nothing, and this was all he could do.
Putting a hand to the ground to lever himself to his feet, he suddenly stopped. Kazu and Kenta stopped their sudden squabbling as well at the noise. It was something more felt than heard really. It was as if the ground for meters in any direction was a heart, and it had just let out a massive beat.
It happened a second time, this time seeming to rock the world around them without disturbing a leaf outside. Shaking them, whether they realized it or not, in and out of phase with reality.
With the next beat came a scream. A roar of pain so deep and vast that nothing could contain it. It was with this that the three adolescents figured out that they might just be in trouble here, and scrambled to their feet.
Another beat, and it seemed that reality itself could no longer contain whatever fell beast was making the noise as the ground around the gate splintered, sending brightly glowing cracks cleaving into the walls around them and even through the air of the entrance, cutting off hope of escape. Kazu dropped back to his ass and face-palmed, the arm supported on one knee. "Kenta, you really have to stop jinxing us like that."
The other boy sheepishly scratched the back of his head. "Heh. Sorry."
Another beat, and the partially destroyed space shattered, and the three boys knew nothing but blackness.
---
"Oww~ww."
Takato groaned and stood up. Well, he tried, anyway. The problem was that Kazu and Kenta were on top of him, and that was making not only standing difficult, but things like breathing as well.
That was his first clue that he wasn't in the digital world. The fact that he needed to breathe. With a grunt, he managed to lever himself up enough that the other two boys slid off of him. They hit the ground with a solid thunk, and their groans told Takato that they would be coming around soon enough. In the meantime, he examined his surroundings, looking for signs of, well, anything, really. Just some idea of what had happened. He was standing in the center of a small crater inside a forest, though sparsely populated enough to let plenty of light through.
Other than that, his immediate surroundings didn't give him anything other than confusion, except to cement his certainty that wherever they were, it was not the digital world. For one thing, and this was a big one, there were actual birds hanging around. Not bird type digimon, but actual birds. The sky seemed to be relatively normal, what with the sun shining down up there. Of course, there were also three moons at what appeared to be mid-day, so that was really throwing him off.
"Ugh... what hit us?" Kazu stood up, rubbing his head and glancing around as Kenta rolled to his hands and knees to grab his thankfully undamaged glasses.
"Well, I dunno."Ø Takato looked up. Despite the small crater the three boys were in, they certainly hadn't fallen from any great height, unlike their trip to the digital world - either that or they'd laid there long enough that all of the tree branches overhead had grown back. "I just know that I don't think it's the digital world."Ø
"Yeah, an actual sky and multiple moons does give that impression."Ø Kazu had his hand over his visor and was squinting up at the sky.
"Well.. maybe it evolved?" Kenta sounded a little unsure, but wanting to believe that was true, just so that they might have some idea of what they were dealing with.
Kazu just shot him a look. "Kenta. That's crazier than catfish. And you know how I feel about catfish."
Takato twitched, but didn't turn back to the two. The memory of Kazu somehow managing to catch one, only to have it tail slap him a couple dozen times before slipping back into the river would rest in his memory for some time. No one knew just how the catfish had gotten there, which only added to the mystery. Still, he couldn't face Kazu for a few moments without bursting into laughter, which wouldn't help the situation.
There was a slight rumbling in the bushes, and all three prepared to run. When an Allomon burst through the foliage a moment later, they were well prepared and immediately ran the other way.
"Ohshitohshitohshit!"Ø Takato (bravely?) took the lead.
ôNot again!ö Kenta was only a few seconds behind.
Kazu spared a breath or two as they ran for their lives, something they were more familiar with than they liked. "Kenta, why do you always ruin things for us?!"

Okay, that's done. This work is... different than a lot of my other works. For one thing, it takes place in a near completely original setting. Or rather, I had a setting of my own design, then when two who shall remain nameless reignited some things, I swiftly set about tweaking it slightly by tossing out generic fantasy monsters in favor of digimon.
A few things to keep in mind. I've only really watched up to season three, though I have a huge urge to track down five and six now, and I never even picked up the card game. I'll try to keep in mind things I remember from around the net, but for the most part I'm just going to make shit up as I go.
Anyway, the premise is that the digimon game, produced by Bandai (or whatever fake company name I choose) is (perhaps obviously) not the only thing they make, but like any good software company, they may reuse some behind the scenes code, like the code for the digimon, but built into the various fantasy races that roam the land. The digimon are sort of a giant easter-egg nod toward their earlier works.
They don't really know that the monsters in their new mmo have been replaced for the most part by real digimon, and as long as things keep running smoothly, they won't really care either.
And now I've just dropped in three tamers, though this is less significant than it sounds, as it actually is one of the character classes. (though only one of sixteen.)
You cannot see it, what with two monitors and the all of the internet in the way, but I'm flipping two big ass birds to Ryuugi and Daneel. It's like they just dragged a guy out of rehab and mainlined him some heroin.
