First thing's first.

You cannot see it, what with two monitors and the all of the internet in the way, but I'm flipping two big ass birds to Ryuugi and Daneel. It's like they just dragged a guy out of rehab and mainlined him some heroin.

Thanks much.

A Digital Fantasy
Prologue - (Not) The Only Game In Town

Matsuda Takato was, at first glance, an ordinary boy. Mouse brown hair, lighter brown eyes, and the easy smile all fourteen year olds have. A second glance wouldn't change much, except that one might notice his odd fashion accessory of goggles, or the fact that his eyes took on a reddish tint if you looked at them in the right light.

Takato also had several disconcerting habits, one of which was to vanish deep into a local park for hours at a time, just to squat in an old shed and stare at something only he could see. Today, however, he was not alone.

"C'mon, stupid. It's not like the gate's going to just randomly open up - and even if it did, we're not exactly prepared for that just walking home from school. Let's split." Shota Hirokazu was another brown haired young man. It freaked him out slightly to be the voice of reason right now, as he was usually anything but, but something clearly needed to be done. Takato was spending way too much time just staring at the slight red glow of the gate to the digital world. Still, as a loyal friend, he sat there, just shooting the breeze and trying to lighten up the atmosphere.

"But it could, right?" Kazu turned a harsh glare at the third and last person in the cramped space, Kitagawa Kenta, who flinched back, swiftly enough that it tossed his blue-black hair a bit, light reflecting off his glasses briefly. "Well, it has to open sometime, right?"

"Sure. But not today. We've been here for hours now." Kazu threw his hands up in the air in exasperation.

Kenta frowned back. "Well, it's not like we can just ask Yamaki. The government shut Hypnos down, remember? So we have to keep checking."Ø

"Check, sure. But we sit here for at least an hour every day. I want them to come back too, but I have things that need doing, you know? And it's not like Yamaki isn't trying, you know?"

"Kazu, I don't think you can fit that kind of equipment into an apartment. Hell, not even the building. The zoning laws wouldn't cover anything like yugoth."

Takato sighed and admitted defeat for the day. Kazu was right. The digital world wasn't just going to randomly throw open its doors one day. The digital creatures known as digimon that they'd had so many adventures with weren't going to just pop out and say hi without a certain amount of fanfare preceding it. In reality, Takato figured their first sign would be a wild one rampaging through downtown again, followed by a frantic few days of trying to contain things without their partners. But that didn't mean it felt right to just sit back and do nothing, and this was all he could do.

Putting a hand to the ground to lever himself to his feet, he suddenly stopped. Kazu and Kenta stopped their sudden squabbling as well at the noise. It was something more felt than heard really. It was as if the ground for meters in any direction was a heart, and it had just let out a massive beat.

It happened a second time, this time seeming to rock the world around them without disturbing a leaf outside. Shaking them, whether they realized it or not, in and out of phase with reality.

With the next beat came a scream. A roar of pain so deep and vast that nothing could contain it. It was with this that the three adolescents figured out that they might just be in trouble here, and scrambled to their feet.

Another beat, and it seemed that reality itself could no longer contain whatever fell beast was making the noise as the ground around the gate splintered, sending brightly glowing cracks cleaving into the walls around them and even through the air of the entrance, cutting off hope of escape. Kazu dropped back to his ass and face-palmed, the arm supported on one knee. "Kenta, you really have to stop jinxing us like that."

The other boy sheepishly scratched the back of his head. "Heh. Sorry."

Another beat, and the partially destroyed space shattered, and the three boys knew nothing but blackness.

---

"Oww~ww."

Takato groaned and stood up. Well, he tried, anyway. The problem was that Kazu and Kenta were on top of him, and that was making not only standing difficult, but things like breathing as well.

That was his first clue that he wasn't in the digital world. The fact that he needed to breathe. With a grunt, he managed to lever himself up enough that the other two boys slid off of him. They hit the ground with a solid thunk, and their groans told Takato that they would be coming around soon enough. In the meantime, he examined his surroundings, looking for signs of, well, anything, really. Just some idea of what had happened. He was standing in the center of a small crater inside a forest, though sparsely populated enough to let plenty of light through.

Other than that, his immediate surroundings didn't give him anything other than confusion, except to cement his certainty that wherever they were, it was not the digital world. For one thing, and this was a big one, there were actual birds hanging around. Not bird type digimon, but actual birds. The sky seemed to be relatively normal, what with the sun shining down up there. Of course, there were also three moons at what appeared to be mid-day, so that was really throwing him off.

"Ugh... what hit us?" Kazu stood up, rubbing his head and glancing around as Kenta rolled to his hands and knees to grab his thankfully undamaged glasses.

"Well, I dunno."Ø Takato looked up. Despite the small crater the three boys were in, they certainly hadn't fallen from any great height, unlike their trip to the digital world - either that or they'd laid there long enough that all of the tree branches overhead had grown back. "I just know that I don't think it's the digital world."Ø

"Yeah, an actual sky and multiple moons does give that impression."Ø Kazu had his hand over his visor and was squinting up at the sky.

"Well.. maybe it evolved?" Kenta sounded a little unsure, but wanting to believe that was true, just so that they might have some idea of what they were dealing with.

Kazu just shot him a look. "Kenta. That's crazier than catfish. And you know how I feel about catfish."

Takato twitched, but didn't turn back to the two. The memory of Kazu somehow managing to catch one, only to have it tail slap him a couple dozen times before slipping back into the river would rest in his memory for some time. No one knew just how the catfish had gotten there, which only added to the mystery. Still, he couldn't face Kazu for a few moments without bursting into laughter, which wouldn't help the situation.

There was a slight rumbling in the bushes, and all three prepared to run. When an Allomon burst through the foliage a moment later, they were well prepared and immediately ran the other way.

"Ohshitohshitohshit!"Ø Takato (bravely?) took the lead.

ôNot again!ö Kenta was only a few seconds behind.

Kazu spared a breath or two as they ran for their lives, something they were more familiar with than they liked. "Kenta, why do you always ruin things for us?!"

---

Okay, that's done. This work is... different than a lot of my other works. For one thing, it takes place in a near completely original setting. Or rather, I had a setting of my own design, then when two who shall remain nameless reignited some things, I swiftly set about tweaking it slightly by tossing out generic fantasy monsters in favor of digimon.

A few things to keep in mind. I've only really watched up to season three, though I have a huge urge to track down five and six now, and I never even picked up the card game. I'll try to keep in mind things I remember from around the net, but for the most part I'm just going to make shit up as I go.

Anyway, the premise is that the digimon game, produced by Bandai (or whatever fake company name I choose) is (perhaps obviously) not the only thing they make, but like any good software company, they may reuse some behind the scenes code, like the code for the digimon, but built into the various fantasy races that roam the land. The digimon are sort of a giant easter-egg nod toward their earlier works.

They don't really know that the monsters in their new mmo have been replaced for the most part by real digimon, and as long as things keep running smoothly, they won't really care either.

And now I've just dropped in three tamers, though this is less significant than it sounds, as it actually is one of the character classes. (though only one of sixteen.)

Shit, again? I'll fix it when I get back from work, but that won't be for like ten hours. I just wish I knew what was causing it.

Just change the character encoding to unicode in your web browser this will fix the characters in the story post and fuck everything else, once you're done set it to western ISO again.

So it's a generic fantasy MMORPG setting, only with the monsters replaced with Digimon? If so, then is there a reason why you didn't just use a Digital World? It doesn't even have to be the same one in the anime.

Yes, there is a good reason. There are now people, and other 'fantasy' races living here now. And I mean living in the sense that the digimon are, though one of the questions to be asked is just where they start, and the game's programming begins.

So the other fantasy races are just as real as Digimon are. Going by that logic, that means all the games that Bandai (or whatever fake company name you choose) makes that have the same coding as Digimon would all become real... that's a scary thought, what if said company decided to make a game about inter-galactic warfare or something?

Yeah. Thing is, Bandai (I'm still deciding if I want to change the name or not, strikes me as wrong to pick on them for some reason) did the responsible company thing way back when and when they bought the digimon concept from the university that held the rights to it, they got everything, including the code.

Remember Terriermon vs Apemon from the beginning? This isn't even the first time they've used it, though an mmo *is* the first time that they've let a single game session run long enough for the data to gain sentience.

Well, everything is relative, but that company really have things going terribly whrong with their projects. Didn't they notice anything whrong somewhere between the devas and the D-Reaper? Didn't Hypnos try to solve this with them?

Sorry about how late this is, but this is the busiest time of the year for me, and just about all of my actual free time has been taken up by family. I've had just about all the insanity I can take here, but things are hopefully going to slow down a bit just after Christmas.

---

The three boys didn't stop running when another form darted out of some bushes off to the side, slamming into the Allomon and staggering it, but did skid to a halt when a familiar child like voice rang out.

"Fireball!" Takato whipped around so fast he slipped and fell, but he did get around fast enough to see Guilmon launch his attack, the momentum throwing the smaller digimon back.

Guilmon landed with a heavy thump as Allomon righted himself, and the smaller dinosaur growled lightly as he manuvered carefully and protectively between it and the humans.

ôDino Burst!ö Allomon retaliated with a bright blue orb, seeking to get Guilmon out of the way of his lunch, but Guilmon dashed under the attack, leaving it to send up a spray of dirt between the humans and the fight.

ôRock breaker!ö They couldn't see what was happening, but the Allomon roared in just after the heavy smack of scales on scales.

As the dust cleared enough for silhouettes, they saw Allomon lower its head and charge. ôDynamite Head!ö

Guilmon managed to roll out of the way, but it was a close thing, the charging dinosaur's leg clipping him, sending him spinning into a tree.

ôFireball!ö Even only partially righted, Guilmon's attack flew true enough to strike the blue dinosaur in the side, this time managing to knock it over. Guilmon followed up on his advantage by closing in and slamming another Rock Breaker into Allomon's side.

He had to dodge back when Allomon thrashed around in preparation of getting back to its feet. The battle was beginning to tell. Guilmon had given much better than he had gotten, to be certain. The Allomon was fast enough to regain its feet again, and another staring contest ensued.

After a long, long moment, the blue dinosaur gave a huffing snort and moved off into the trees after less defensible prey.

Guilmon watched for a moment to make sure that Allomon wasn't trying anything funny, then turned and dashed full speed at Takato, who finally scrambled to his feet to do the same.

As fast and enthusiastic as the two were, coordinated they were not. Rather than coming together in a hug for a tearful reunion, they ended up headbutting each other and falling back.

"Ow."

"Takato, your head got pretty hard."

Kazu snorted from where he and Kenta were watching. "Yeah, that's Takato, all right. His head's harder than most rocks."

Kenta rolled his eyes. "So what does that make yours then?"

"Hey!"

Ignoring the byplay, Takato now had an arm wrapped around Guilmon's neck. "I missed you, Guilmon."

"Aww..." Guilmon smiled happily. "I missed you too, Takato. I wished real hard last night for you to come and play with me some more, and here you are!"

Takato nodded, accepting that idea easily as he got to his feet. "Wished real hard, huh?"

"Until I thought my tummy might burst." He paused. "Takato, do you have any food?"

Takato grimaced. In his excitement he'd forgotten about their lack of supplies. "No. Your, uh, wish, caught us by surprise. I don't even have any digimon cards on me, much less food."

The dinosaur digimon sighed, looking disappointed but resolute. "I'll just have to go get some, I guess."

"I hope there's enough for everyone," Kazu mumbled, "I'm a lot hungrier than I thought."

Kenta frowned as they started walking. "So where are MarineAngemon and the others, Guilmon?"

The red dino seemed to wilt as he kept going forwards. "I don't know. After Renamon left, we got separated."

"Wait, wait, wait." Takato shook his head and held his hands out in front of him, as if to ward something away. "Renamon left? As in 'packed up and said goodbye'?!"

Guilmon nodded sadly, but didn't say anything else.

After staring at his digimon for a long few moments, trying to wrap his mind around the idea, Takato finally managed to blurt out, "Why?"

If possible, this seemed to make Guilmon even more depressed. As he opened his mouth to say something, Kazu interrupted. "Guys, we have all night for this. Where's the grub, Guilmon?"

The change of topic cheered Guilmon up a little, and he pointed off through the trees. "Not far now, but it might be hard to get enough for all of us and not be captured, though."

"Captured?" Kenta didn't like the sound of that.

"Uh huh," The child nodded, "Humans set out bait to capture digimon to make them their partners. I already have a partner, so I try real hard not to be captured."

"Humans?" Takato wasn't sure who had said it, maybe it had been all of them. What were humans doing in the digital world who weren't already partnered? Was it the government? Had they shut down Hypnos only to start up something worse?

Guilmon continued moving along, oblivious of his friend's fears. "Humans, elves, dwarves, and some other people I can't say the names of without screwing up."

---

As the humans wandered after the red dino, the other digimon hidden above them smiled faintly. ôAt last.ö The angel waited an appropriate amount of time for them to be out of earshot and then flapped his wings, getting ready to take the news back to his master. It was likely she already knew, but he would have to drop by just in case.

ôNow the real game begins.ö

---

Okay, I have a dillema here. I *could* go into getting them into town and starting them on the paths I have chosen for these three idiots. Or I could just jump ahead two years to when the other Tamers finally find them.

Most of Takato/Kazu/Kenta stuff is a little boring, only good for providing insight into the game's mechanics, which while good to know, could be just as easily introduced in line when it comes up during the story. Plus, what with being actually there rather than PCs, the trio will actually have to put *work* into mastering these things rather than pressing buttons. I don't want to really write training sequences. I don't do this most of time because it's usually a sign of a weak story, but thought I'd defer to the audience on this one.

Thoughts?

Does Takato have his Digivice on him?

If he does and the other 'races' try to start something up with him or his friends, he can just go "MATRIX EVOLUTION" and fuck their shit up... come to think of it, it would be a pretty awesome scene.

I'm guessing the master is either Yggdrasil or Ophanimon.

Montage? Do the time skip but include little scenes of what's happening to provide us with some info.

Other than that I'd go for the time skip.

Just do the time skip. Maybe have a few flashback explanations or something.

If Takato spent all his time camping in the shed, he most likely has his Digivice with him. He doesn't know when the portal might open or close so he would definitely have it with him.

Holy crap. It's like I went back in time. Before all the naruto crap, this was my hook. If only Black was actually part of TFF, and started writing again, I'd have my 3 favorite digimon writers actually back in the scene.

I look forward to reading more.

Lee Jenrya stared for a moment, blue hair wafting in the wind, at the concrete block that was the government's response to the disappearance of three boys two years ago. Well, that and the security cameras behind him. The block itself was covering up what had been dubbed the proto-gate that had been last sighted underneath Guilmon's hut. Now it was just this.

Jen made it a point to stop by at least once a week or so. He was deliberately not letting himself become consumed by the thing like Takato (in the figurative or literal sense), or he'd be hearing an earful from his father, sister, and Jeri, to say nothing of his boss, who didn't even like him getting to close to the park.

He spent a few minutes just standing there, attempting to get a reading with his digivice in futility, and just generally commiserating on the nature of the world in general that saw fit to rob him of all his friends.

As he walked home he did his best to center himself. It wouldn't do to be so angry, especially going to a house with nothing but his little sister in it. It still didn't seem very fair, but then, that was the way life was, he supposed. Unfair.

He shook his head in an attempt to knock himself out of it. He needed to hurry home so that he wasn't late for his online date. Idly, he wondered just who/where 'Chiaki' was in real life. He very much hoped that she wasn't some creepy old guy just stringing him along for laughs. Given the way she'd laugh and change the subject every time he'd mention meeting in real life, it was starting to be a concern.

But, he thought, slipping in the door, That would be just par for the course, wouldn't it? Still, he tried to cheer himself up about it. It was probably just something else, like being worried about her looks, or a weird family member or something.

ôJen!ö And speaking of weird family members, his little sister, Lee Shiuchon rushed out of her room and tackled him. It wasn't very effective, her nine-year-old frame only just barely rocking his sixteen-year-old one, and he smiled down at her. Shuichon was very sensitive to people's moods, and the last thing he needed right now was to set her off and make him late. She was just at the age where she was starting to get over tantrums and the like, but it still happened on occasion.

ôAre you going to play again? I want to play too!ö

Jenrya closed his eyes and calmed himself before opening them again. This had to be handled carefully. ôYes, I am, and no, you can't.ö

Shuichon let go of him and smiled cheekily. ôYes I can!ö

Jen shook his head. ôNo, you can't. It's not a game you fan play. Wait 'till you're older.ö And with that, he stalked off towards his room.

ôIt's okay, I made a copy of the disk.ö Jenrya froze, one foot off the floor. ôWhat disk?ö

ôThis one!ö She pulled a disk in a protective sleeve out from behind her back as he slowly turned around, and through the transparent cover, Jen could clearly make out the Digital Fantasy logo. He quietly took a step back, and then took in the mischievous grin on the little girl's face. Ever since the D-Reaper incident, his father had been closed mouthed about his work. Once Takato disappeared, though, anything digimon at all was a taboo subject. All of his cards were in the back corner of his closet.

The old man would have a colossal fit if he found out that Jenrya had been playing anything computer related by Bandai or even anything digimon in particular. The blue haired boy glared down at his lavender haired little sister. ôWhat do you want,ö he hissed.

ôI want to play too!ö The smile on her face had changed to angelic, but Jen wasn't fooled for an instant. It was obvious that the little she-devil was there to punish him for wrongs in a previous life. But that was neither here nor there. It was either give in to her blackmail or be late for his date.

ôFine. I'll set up an account for you.ö Fortunately, trial accounts were free. With any luck she'd get bored of it and he wouldn't have to go through the headache of actually paying for a second one. Judging by the way she skipped back to her room though, Jen didn't think that would pan out.

---

By the time he got into the game, he was a bit late, but it hardly mattered. The blue haired human Mechanic, dubbed Gou, rushed at a quick pace down the street. Something had happened while he was gone at school today, hence the bright red timer in the middle of the top of the screen. It still had just a little less than a day to go, but things would begin happening fast at this point.

The timer meant that the war had been won. Digital Fantasy was something of an odd game, taking many pieces from many genres. It was one of the few games that functioned in real-time. The game world was always moving, even if there were no players in it. The world itself was huge, with a seemingly unlimited number of things to do, what with a nine races and some thirty factions spread across them. But there was also a story to it, one of war, and it wouldn't stop until one side had dominated the world completely. After that, the session ended, and there was a timer, like now, until it closed out completely, scattering the players into other sessions. Depending on your character's level, one could have a completely different experience several times even with the same faction as it advanced through stages.

Now that a faction had won, however, specifically a human/elven alliance, any number of other players belonging to other factions would begin to pop out of the woodwork, desperate to fain some territory before time ran out, but unless they got really lucky, things wouldn't happen.

Gou smiled and raised his hand in greeting as he spotted Chiaki in the crowd ahead of him. He really hoped she was somewhere near his age. They'd been through the last few sessions together, somehow being lucky enough to be transferred to the same one each time. Gou didn't know the odds on that off the top of his head without knowing the number of sessions running at the same time, but it had to be astronomical. It just felt... destined somehow. Her elven character had bright pink hair pulled back in a ponytail, and was wearing a basic set of mechanic's overalls.

ôJenrya,ö she grinned, ôYou're just in time! I got another person to trade the last part I need for my new gun! He should be here in a moment.ö

Gou nodded, Jenrya absently entering the emoting commands on his keyboard as he stood there for a moment, just looking out through his character's eyes at her. He supposed it wasn't really fair to her, but he really just wanted to see he just once outside the game, just to be sure that it wasn't all in his head.

ôOh, there he is!ö She pointed over his shoulder, and Jenrya turned around, to see a Guardromon moving through the crowd towards them, another voice piping up.

ôMake way! Hey, move it or lose it, grandma!ö

The brown haired guy was obviously another mechanic, though in heavy work clothes rather than overalls, and glanced at him as he put a battery looking thing into Chiaki's hand. Something about that struck Jen as strange. The fact that the head had turned to look at him was strange, as was the act of physically handing an object over rather than using the menu system. That was something that NPCs did.

---

ô...And that's when I realized that the girl I'd been seeing for the past three months was a computer program.ö Jen was laying on a couch with his head on the armrest.

Behind his head and off to the side, sat a girl with small glasses perched on her nose. ôAnd how did that make you feel?ö

Frowning, Jen thought it through for a moment. ôPanic. Panic was my first emotion. Then she introduced him, and I blacked out for a moment. When I came to, I'd accidentally nudged the power switch on my electrical strip.ö

ôHmm. Do you recall what the boy's name was?ö Jen could hear the young woman shifting slightly in her chair, likely adjusting her green dress, from the fabric sounds.

ôUm. Ka...zu...ö Jenrya's eye twitched. ôA brown haired Kazu with a Guardromon. What's the verdict?ö

ôI'm afraid you're out of your mind, Mr. Lee.ö Jeri stroked the aibou in the patchwork lion costume sitting in her lap as her other hand took notes. ôBelieve me, I know crazy when I see it.ö The Lion was the latest replacement for her sock puppet.

ôFair enough,ö Jenrya agreed. Considering that it was very possible he'd hallucinated the entire thing, maybe even blacking out without turning the computer on, ôBut am I wrong

ôWithout seeing it for myself, I couldn't tell you one way or another.ö She smiled. ôBut it would be nice if it were true, wouldn't it? That they're still alive out there. It seems obvious to me that you just fainted from stress. Of course whether that stress is from real life revelations or just cracking under the pressure of your job is a different matter.ö She frowned and put a finger to her lips. ôIt's likely both, really.ö

ôDon't bring my job into this,ö The blue haired boy groused.

Jeri snorted, causing the aibou to yowl a bit. ôAnd why shouldn't I? You're working for Yamaki, Jen. And while he's a nice enough person, I suppose, you're basically doing two jobs at once helping him with his software company and scanning the digital world. Plus your schoolwork, and your apparently digital social life.

ôThese are all very good reasons to snap, and I'm surprised you haven't before now. Beyond all that, I know you're crazy because I've only had one semester of psychology - as a school club, no less - and you're still coming to me for help.ö

ôYeah, but you've been to plenty of psyche appointments.ö Jen's argument was weak and he knew it, definitely showing in his voice.

Jeri removed her completely cosmetic glasses and put them on the table, putting her pimped out aibou on the ground to walk around on its own, rolling her eyes as she did so. ôSomehow, I don't think time laying on the couch itself counts for this.ö She sighed. ôBut since I know you won't let this go, at least promise me you'll talk to Yamaki about finding out if this is real before doing anything stupid, okay?ö

Jen nodded. ôYeah. It's not like I can ask my dad about it.ö

ôGreat,ö the brown haired girl smiled, ônow get out of here before my dad comes home. ôYou know what he did to the last boy he caught in here.ö

Nodding, Jenrya walked to the door. ôDid they ever find all of his teeth?ö

ôNot in enough time to do anything about it.ö

---

And I'll leave that like this for the moment.

I wonder what the other classes are, and what 'faction' Takato and co. belong to. If Takato can become Dukemon, then I can see him being in the Royal Knights, or the "Digital Fantasy' equivalent of them anyway.

There are sixteen character classes, of which two can eventually be chosen. Humans have a kind of swiss army knife trait, they can choose to be anything they want. The other races have bonuses to one area of expertise, and one area they can't use at all.

Factions are as follows:
Four Human Kingdoms
The Movement to Reunite the Human Kingdoms
One Faction for all other races (Some of these races don't have a 'kingdom' of their own per se)
One for each of the twelve gods
One for the demons in general
Three for the monsters (Vaccine, Data, Virus)
One for mages in general
And the last faction is technically 'without faction'

Character classes are divided up by the source of the power, be it divine, mortal, demon, or nature, and the existential (for lack of a better term), Mind, Soul, Body, and Technology. It's important to note that body doesn't mean physical attacks, that's a different menu all together. Body in this case refers to powers that affect the physical body. It's very possible to be competent physical warrior without them, but they do help quite a bit.

Code:
 ? ? ? ? ? ? Divine ? ? ?Mortal ? ?Demonic ? ? ? Nature
Mind: ? ? ? Clerical ? ?Arcane ? ?Acolyte ? ? ? Druidic
Soul: ? ? ? Abjuration ?Aura ? ? ?Possession ? ?Familiar
Physical: ? Champion ? ?Chi ? ? ? Augmentation ?Lycan
Technology: Blessing ? ?Guardian ?Destruction ? Elemental
I really hope that came out looking right for everyone. I seem to have been having sporadic issues with that sort of thing lately.
