Akamatsuverse A Negima Reread

Okay, so partially as research and partially because I'll really enjoy it, I decided to reread Negima from the beginning with the English Volumes I've just finished collecting.

This is meant to be my impressions, notes on intresting facts, things only obvious on the second read through, those kinds of things.

Also, I'm coming from the offical english translations, which at least in the early days were a bit... strange, so some things might be caused by the dodgy translation.

First thing of note after Negi's introduction is the train ride... where the group of girls is blantantly flirting with him.

Like, serious innuendo here. Negi hasn't even arrived at the school yet and he already needs an adult.

The next thing of note after Asuna and Konoka's introduction is the cause of a common misunderstanding

Basically, the two girls tell Negi that this is an all-girls area and the elementary schools are one stop back.

But you can see guys in the background and one of the previous pages had dozens of boys and girls rushing around after getting off the train.

On a side note, first indication that this place is frigging nuts.

So yeah, we're told its a girls only school, which Mahora middle school is. But more people than you think seem to have missed the obvious male population running around.

We have our first indiction of when in the year this is: Negi is on a temp contract until March, so unless there was a Christmas I missed we are somewhere in January or Febuary. If I get something more concreate I'll let you know, though for now I'm guessing late Jan.

Skip forward to the intro to the class and nothing out of the ordi- wait, is that Misora helping the Narutaki twins set up their prank? And why is she the only one without any additional info in the class roster?

Skipping forward and we have something that catches my interest.

When Negi stars talking about becoming a Magister Magi, there appears a picture of a woman. I'm wondering who she is if she's anyone at all, and if that's Magia Erebea she's weilding?

"Our Magic is not omnipotent. A little bit of courage is the real magic"

These would make great arc words. Let's see how often they get referenced between now and the end.

Not much of note in the second chapter apart from more Nodoka focus.

Asuna's birthday is April 21 while Konoka's is March 18, making them one of the oldest and youngest in the class respectively.

And Konoka loves the supernatural, which is especally ironic really.

Asuna explains the Dorms. Which begs the question. Where do the 3rd years live? Only the 1st and 2nd are here.

Apart from that and the intro of more girls naked, not much is noteworthy in chapter 3.

Yue's bday is Nov 16, Haruna's is Aug 18 and Nodokas is May 10. Only other interesting info is that Haruna likes "Lots of trouble" and dislikes reptiles.

Introduction of the Baka Rangers, who are important for the next arc or two but are then subsumed as a group. Everyone of them remains relevent. Somewhat. But not as a group.
Hindsight tells me everyone has an excuse/reason but Makie.

And we get our first reference to Nagi and that tragic night as Negi explains part of his inpiration to Asuna. No mention of names, relations or attacks is made, only that someone is watching over Negi.

Yuna's bday is Jun 1 and is already outed as a loving her dad a bit too much. She's also a bit of a neat freak, which I didn't realize but makes sense. Ako's bday is Nov 21 and Makie's is Mar 7. Her likes already list Negi, most liely because of her love of cute things.

There's not much to the dodgeball fight except that 2-A are a bunch of cheaters.

The only other thing of note is who is in the game and who is abstaining.

The 3 Cheerleaders decide to cheer rather than play. But literally everyone else who doesn't is supernatural in some way.

In fact, Misora, Negi and Chao are the only supernatural ones who decide to play. But Chao can't use magic and Misora is hiding it, IIRC. Or wait, is Misora a Mage. I know she gets an artifact, but I don't remember if she herself is a Mage or not.

Oh, and Kuu Fei is still at this point considered a normal, so she plays.

Eva, Chachamaru, Mana, Keade, Zazie and Sertsuna abstain. A subtle clue that separates them from the rest of the class.

On going list of subtle or not Asuna hints:

Noticed Negi stop the board eraser in mid air.
Memory erasion didn't work.
Looks like Negi's cousin.
Unaffected by the love potion.
An orphan who the Dean is watching over.
"Too heavy" to fly with.
Stupid beyond belief.
Super strong for no known reason.

And that's Volume 1.

I think the only thing I failed to mention is Negi is very very obviously a Wind Mage.

You just reminded me of my little Negi collection, Magicman Asha. I'm actually looking to sell them and get the Omnis.

But the reread is neat. Lots of nice nuggets of info for later.

Something I forgot to mention last time. For some reason Eva was in the Dorm baths, which is weird because she lives outside the dorms.

Volume 2 kicks off with the first true arc after the previous introductionary chapters.

First thing to note; these girls will take any excuse to get naked, wont they?

Second thing. 737 students. In the 2nd year alone. Holy fuck. That means the girls middle school has about 2,000 students or more. Holy shit. 2-A? There is probably a 2-Z!

Second is the girls rankings in the year. Chao and Hakase place 1 and 2. Ayaka places a surprising 4th with Nodoka at 21st. Chizuru and Konoka place somewhere between 90-120.

But the real shock is Asakura with her spot at 80(ish).

I was not expecting her to be 5th in class.

Then we follow up with another small shock as we get into the middle groupings.

The next most intelligent person after Chizuru and Konoka. Narutaki Fuka followed by her twin Fumika. After that the rest place between 350 and 550.

The 4 lowest, minus the Baka Rangers are Chachamaru, Eva and Zazie. Oh, and Setsuna! I thought you were smarter than that girl. Or were you so busy stalking Konoka you forgot the study?

And now library Island. Another one of those clues that this Mahpra place is Not Normal!

Courage = magic: 1

That's a lot of students. Can't believe I missed it.

At 30-31 students per class you get something like 23-24 classes in total.

That's pretty huge.

Great reflexes there Keade, catching an arrow in midair then dozens of books.

First mention of the World Tree. Apparently the Library beats it in weirdness factor. Don't worry Tree-chan, you'll regain that title soon enough!

Kuu Fei, bday March 16, likes strong men. Dislikes new food and sword inventions. I wonder why. I thought she'd be interested in those kinds of things.

Kaede, bday Nov 11. Dislikes frogs and is from Kouga.

Between Kouga, which I think is famous for its ninja association and the picture of her holding a fistful of knives/kunai, this is the first real hint that she's a ninja.

We knew Kuu was a martial artist and, thinking on it, many of her appearences are with Chao, so no surprises there.

Apparently Chisame is a slacker, with the implication Setsuna and Madoka the cheerleader are the same. That collarates with what was said before as Chisame, Misa the cheerleader and Madoka are the next dumbest above the 4 I mentioned earlier.

Negi was born in 1994. This means that he was 9 when the series started. No proper date is given, but he probably only just turned nine before he came to Mahora.

I made a mistake. There aren't 26 classes in 2nd year, There's only 24. My bad. 2-X is totally a class. And now I'm curious about how Sayo takes tests seeing as she's dead and all. And not included in the class test Rankings. Is she just a constant 0? If so its no wonder 2-A can't take the top slot with that dragging them down.

Always bet with Sakurako. Also she can probably eat for free for the next year and a half from this bet that 2-A will come in first alone.

At the end of this mini-arc we get confirmation that the Dean is a Mage, which was hinted at earlier but never confirmed. Which makes Konoka's disregard for magic existing all the more stand out.

And we also get our first concrete date.

April 2nd is the da Negi begins as a full fledged teacher.

Asuna hints:
How goddamn hard did she throw that book at that statue. I thought she just knocked it off balance at first but the power behind that impact. Umpf.

So at the very least Makie, Kuu and Konoka turned 14 during the first two volumes.

And that there is a 5 year difference between the girls and Negi.

If I'm right and Negi was born in January, there is 4 years 10 months between Konoka, the current youngest, and Negi. Asuna, the current oldest is 5 years 9 months older.

And that's just the Girls middle school.

There's the girls high school, a least one grade school and a university, plus a probable boys middle and high school, all of whom will proably be comparable in size.

We're talking Mahora as a whole having Tens of thousands of students aged 5 to 21.

So first actual mistake in the Eng translation. Chisame's likes and dislikes are copied from Kuu's.

The unofficial trans lists them as useless people and unexpected events.

Then I look back at Kuu's hates and they list those as Chao's and Hakase's new inventions. Which makes so much more sense.

Chisame is the voice of reason.

And then something interesting.

According to the english version, Chao, Mana, Kuu, Zazie, Eva, Keade and the Narutaki twins are transfer students. In contrast the unoffical trans calls them Repeaters.

And in case you missed it before, which is genuinely possible because she hasn't had a real speaking line yet, Chachamaru is a robot.

Fuka hates ghosts. Poor Sayo. And, in case we missed it in the class roster, this is the first indication the twins and Keae are affiliated with each other. Also transfer students. Huh. I get the feeling more was meant to be done with them than there was.

Fucking Mahora. Made up of a Residential district, University facilities and Researcg institutes, the middle and high school buildings, a European style shopping district, Library Island (which hold over a million book) and the World Tree, it looks more like a god damn fucking town than a school campus.

The middle school has its own gym, with an indoor pool and outdoor court. 160 clubs. And this is just the Middle School shit.

Anya is mentioned for practically thefirst time since chapter 1. Anya is mentioned in relation to Nehi thinking about crushes. And so is his cousin Nakade(?). Boy has issues.

And the infamous World Tree Love Confession urban legernd is name dropped over 50 chapters before it becomes relevent.

Anyway, this chapter was basically a way to tell us more about the school while introing us to the twins who have been prominant background characters so far.

Ayaka likes pure and innocent boys but hates violent and disorderly people. I wish she and Kotaro had more focus. Their dynamic could have been amazing.

She's also apparently got an older sister and her father own a business monoply.

Well, basically this chapter tells us she's a shotacon and everyone knows it, her maids included; that she's very rich and that she has a tsundere rivalry with Asuna

Asuna transferred into Mahora 7 years ago from overseas.

Why would an orphan transfer in from another country when her only guardian is the Dean?

The idea od Magister Magi and Minister Magi is introduced here, just before the Eva arc kicks off.

:snigger:, Negi the prince is a thought that won't gain relevence for quite some time.

And I'm pretty sure this is the first indication that Konoka is from a Noble family of some sort, being forced to go on Marrage Dates at age 14.

And there are a couple of interesting notes in the back of the second volume.

Chisame's story wasn't written and is made up as they go along (at this point in time at least), Makie's evolution is what spawned Sakruako somewhat.

It confirms that there are loads of different schools in each of its Elementary, Middle, High and Uni divitions.

Finally, the Spell library at the back mentions Spirits. This is something that is strange; Spirits are very often used in magic, and indeed UQ Holder has a battle where Eva turns the tables (kinda) by supplanting Earth Spirits with Ice Spirits to give her area advantage.

But Spirits are very rarely mentioned outside certain scenes. I wonder how important they are in magic. I'm guessing very.

And That's Volume 2.

Oh god, I start vol 3 and get to the first double page, where the trains passengers all get off.

I thought I'd count the uniforms, just to see (3 boys and 4 girls btw)... then I begin recognizeing people.

I count 24 of them with a possible Natsumi trailing the cheerleaders). i'm missing Eva, Ayaka, Misora, Makie, Zazie and Sayo.

Highlights: Setsuna, trailing Konoka; Chisame, utterly ignoring the rush and waiting for the idiots to disperse; Mana in her Miko outfit, and Keade on top of the fucking train.

We get Eva's first real speaking lines and the are introduced to Negi's father, the Thousand Master.

And we get more info on what a Ministra Magi is suppost to be. I.e. not a girlfriend.

Keade just kidnapped Negi dressed up as a stereotypical ninja all in black. He's not even trying to be subtle here, is he?

Heavy implication that Eva's curse requires her to guard the school. She keeps an eye on the barriers surrounding the place at least. Also she was quite clearly hunting the intruder (Chamo) down with Chachamaru.

Eva's powers wax and wane with the moon. I doubt this effects her when she's fully powered, but you never know, it might.

Pfft. Chachamaru's likes include having her Springs wound. We all know what that's code for.

There are the first hints that the Dean has some rein on Eva followed by Chachamaru being nice.

Magic is confirmed to increase speed and implies the same for strength.

Kaede is confirmed as a ninja. But didn't know about Magic and Wizards. So ninja live in a separate world than magic. The Narutaki twins are also featured as ninja on the cover page, which is foreshadowing their being Kaede's apprentices and solidifies a connection between the three of them.

Say what you will about the early translations, some of it is genuinely funny. Like the implication Chachamaru is being slipped under the table medicine for Eva.

And Eva fought the Thousand Master at Mahora. You can see Library Island in the distance. How did I not notice this the first time?

Nagi is such a troll, unlike his too serious son.

Nagi was into MagiTek apparently, what with the way he set up his curse.

Asuna ignores Eva's Magic Barrier. Again.

Negi introduces us to his Lightning spells, which he hasn't used before, meaning he's displayed a talent for Lightning, Wind and Light. Which is really interesting considering his future Elemental Affinity - Dark Magic.

Nagi intended to come back and free Eva. The Dean wanted a powerful Guardian for the school and so Nagi prepared one for him.

And a part of Keade's back story that may not be true anymore. Her family are ninja's who'd quit a generation earlier. She was also less competent in her design phase and sems fairly ditzy, which meshes well with her Baka Rangerness

And that's Volume 3

Rooms - Konoka, Asuna, Negi.
Kaede, Fuka, Fumika.

Courage = Magic = 1

Edit:

The start of Volume 4 brings with it all sorts of awkward from Eva.

"Should've knon that even if you kill him, he doesn't stay dead."

"He'd be luckier to be dead."

Considering he's, IIRC, currently sealed up while also being possessed by a magic god person, this sort of hurts.

The shopping trip is on the 20th, Asuna's birthday is the 21st, and the Kyoto trip starts on the 22nd.

Konoka is already showing magical tendencies. Without wand.

Heh, the lunch lady/enemy mage interfered wih Negi on the train.

Asuna dispells a summon demon.

Ma, during the Kyoto Trip, Yue is so supportive if NodokaxNegi. No wonder she feels like an absolute heel over falling for him herself.

More hints that the Twins are Keade's apprentices.

Also: Kuu and Keade? How do they not sweep this Kiss Negi Operation?

Oh, right, because Kaede didn't do anything. That makes sense.

And there's the reveal that Fuka and Fumika are (inept) ninja. Yue bonks them both.

And so begins yue's first, doomed, love. Ignited by a fake coming on to her.

Did Kotato always have a pony-tail? And early Fate looks so different. Thinner and with even less life in those dead eyes of his.

Negi only know 9 combat spells in the beginning.

And hints that Tsukiyomi is a crazy lesbo.

How appropriate that the fight with a Demon is giving Negi flashbacks of his earlier enconter with a Demon.

Kotaro's second meeting with Nodoka consists of face-planting into her crotch. I thought only Negi did that?

Kotaro - a talisamon using summoner/physical fighter/ninja/dog demon with a shadow elemental affinity. This kid needed more fights. I'm admittedlt biased though. Kotaro is one of my favourite characters.

And so begins the SetsunaxKonoka ship tease. I'd forgotten it started out in earnest this early. Half a dozen girls are already describing them as a couple.

Huh, I didn't realize Zazie was at the Cinema World battle. Given what we know now, her involved meant could have been... interesting.

According to Kotaro's character notes, he was designed by a woman and his original personality is a "fox boy ninja". Possibly a Naruto expy? At least originally. Not that much of it left during his debut though.

And as a final note, Nodoka's Pactio virtue? "Bravery". Interesting choice for a shy girl like her.

God fucking damn it Fate! Why you gotta leave creepy statues everywhere you go?

Kind of wondering if the Elder recognised Fate. He's certainly wary of him.

Eva and the Headmaster have a more cordial relationship than I thought.

And the Asuna weirdness continues with too good reactions and explicitly nullifying Fates petrification attack and spells not working on her quite as they should.

i wonder why Fate didn't recognise Asuna? Maybe the age thing? O wait, he wasn't arond back then, was he?

Demons are so... fun? Polite? Don't know the proper term for it but generally not dickheads.

Setsuna being wary/cautious of the Bird Tribe demons takes on a whole new demension.

Kuu:"Is that (gun) real?!"

Mana:"No, its an air gun."

Can't tell if sarcasam.

Setsuna and Mana have worked together before.

Kuu's never fought monsters before.

Is Fate even trying? He must of really underestimated Negi.

There are already a couple of hints Kotaro will be a recurring character.

He's setting off major Rival flags.
Keade's victory isn't quite flawless considering Kotaro held back and she's taken some minor damage.

Setsuna's wing reveal is almost completely out of no where. And the angst. It's like a twofer of irritants.

Albino wings still cool though.

I wonder if she's long lived?

Asuna continues her magic fuckery. But only sometimes. How come it didn't interfere with her summoning or telepathy?

Lasting 90 seconds against Fate.

Managing to hit Fate.

Was Tertium asleep?!

Eva's "End of the World" spell has an area of effect of a 150 square feet.

That's 45 meters.

I don't think this kind of spell would be effective against high speed or teleport capable enemies. Big, slow or pinned down though. Instant finisher.

Spirits monitor Eva's curse and can be fooled.

Asuna recognises something/one in Nagi's group picture.

They never really return to Nagi's house, do they? Considering his use of crib-notes, there was probably some useful stuff in there.

From the notes in the back on Fate, its fairly obvious Ken only had some of this planned out when he started. Either that or he's being incredibly coy.

Either is possible really.

And Averruncus is a god said to "avoid calamity"

Some parts were definately planned out.

And that's Vol 6 and the Kyoto arc over with.

Vol 7 opens with hints of Asuna's past... with Nagi and co.

Also, the last thing Nagi was working on involved maps of Mahora - the World Tree features prominately.

Which is a nice tie in with where he is eventually found.

Asuna goes to bed early (8pm) does her paper route at 3-5am then goes back to bed and gets up late.

Hints that Yue likes Negi after the feild trip - she (and Asuna) are giving off a "love reek" according to Paru. Its meant to be taken as just Asuna, but Yue is reacting suspciously too.

Ako and Makie live together, further suuporting a theory of mine. The Kyoto trip groups corrospond to room mates.
Asuna and Konoka.
Natsumi, Ayaka and Chizuru.
Makie and Ako.

But one group breaks the trend.

Fuka and Fumika and Keade are in two sepate groups.

I'll have to see if I can find who else lives with who.

Traditional and Combat Mages are only the two options most suitable to Negi according to Eva, implying other styles exist.

How effective your spells are is dependant upon your mental skills/presense of mind.

This implies a direct correlation between spell power and mental health.

Inversly, it implies you can have less magical power/use less potent spells, and still come out on top against more powerful foes.

Or Akira actually.

Eva got out the time Time resort specifically for Negi. He does one day of training for one day of classes.

For the first time I notice Chizuru isn't weariing a top when Kotaro first meets her - only her bra.

Oh, and she also wants to be a pre-school teacher and volunteers taking care of "problem kids"

Natsumi has a complex about her frecles.

Chizuru, Natsumi and Ayaka live together.

Kotaro looks to be in his first year of middle school according to Natsumi. That puts him 12-13 years old.

Anya is a year older than Negi.

Negi lived more or less alone - Nekane only stayed with him when she was off from school.

Nagi is fucking cool.

Nagi is really fucking cool. With a side order of Powerful.

Nakane lost her legs. Which probably isn't too permanent.

Negi's guilt that it was divine punishment that demons attacked - that it was his fault. It makes me vaguely uncomfortable to realize that in some way its true. He was the target of the attack.

And he was only 3 too.

I'd forgotten Kotaro was nerfed when he first got to Mahora.

Huh. The tidbits the profiles give you paint Chizuru as someone who gets lonely easily. Bday Jan 29.

Natsumi Oct 21. She's portrayed with a certain degree of self loathing and a desire to become change into someone else.

It occurs to me that the fight against Herrman could have been used to put Negi into the traditional Style if not for the Magic Cancel abilities.

And that is the last we see of Herrmanand the last (I think) we hear of Negi's Demon Killing spell.

And after a whole volume of hinting, Kotaro is acknowledged by the cast a Negi's friend. Quite possibly his FIRST male friend. If we count Takamichi (and I'm not sure we should) then he would be Negi's first male friend his own age.

Plus I agree with the nerfing.

I think the spirits follow the animism theme, and using magic gathers them together to cast a spell. And Kotaro could have had so much development if we knew more on his backstory. At least he didn't disappear like Anya did.

Despite all its action shounen elements, Negima is still (unfortunately) a harem series.

Yue is a girl. Kotaro is a boy.

He was never going to acheive break-out status like Yue did for that reason alone.

Maybe, but we also have spirits summoned for a specific purpose, like with Negi's micro-scale Time Machine manipulators.

Anya got froze out of the plot, which was a shame in some ways but a relief in others. We did get Kotaro's backstory, didn't we? He was an orphan so became a Mercenery. Its not much, and I was disappointed he fell so far behind Negi.

Okay, so Negi sends a letter to his sister on the 4th of June. He mentions he moved to Japan 4 monts ago. That confirms my beginning of Feb, end of Jan arrival.

We never did get much Zazie story, did we? So much missed out on.

Ah, ChamoxChachazero, my favourite crack ship of the series.

Satsuki, bday 12th May. I wished we got more of her.

The Chao Boa Zi is a Festival only Event. Negi is a sad drunk.

Satsuki is insightful and has Eva's respect.

Sayo died 60 years ago. And its only just clicked now that it was during WWII.

Sayo has telekinesis, can write on windows and possess people.

Mana shows us her demon eye and we confirm that nether she nor Setsuna knew Sayo was there. Or Chachamaru

Eva on the hand was aware of her. It also seems that Mana, once aware of her, can see her with her demon eye.

I wonder about Zazie.

Hakase: Bday, 14 July.

Dislikes Unscientific things. It interesting that Magic doesn't count. Most likely because most magic has its own sets of rules and laws, not unlike the scientific world.

When confronted with provable Magic, a true scientist wouldn't shy away from it. They'd expand their horizons and theories to encompasses this new information in order to achieve great understanding of the Laws that govern our universe.

Chachamaru's hair is a hear dispenser.

Its funny; Chao is a fairly low key character so far. She's only appeared serving food and hanging out with Kuu.

Yet she keeps getting name dropped as a super genius and fairly talented martial artist.

Considering Hakase is in on the whole magic thing, it shouldn't come as too great a surprise Chao is either.

And did Hakase just imply Chachamaru is programmed not to harm her?

And did Hakase just offer to install a vagina into Chachamaru?
