A question for the experienced gamers.

I'm a bit new to tabletop rpg's, I've just recently started the Rise of the Runelords adventure pack with a few friends and we have talked about the possibility of playing a mythic campaign in the future.

Well one of our players talked that he was planning on building a character similar to Thor.

My question is thus, does anyone here know the Pathfinder mythic rules enough to help me.

I've thought about it and I've wanted to build a character in the mythic setting that is similar to Dracule Mihawk

Thoughts?

I'd actually push you away from Pathfinder/d20 systems.

They're a little too... how can I put it, because they're intrinsically designed to be balanced with a class/levels system, their rule-sets don't accommodate changing the power-levels very kindly.

Ditto mechanics; the further you get from the built-in precepts (eg, Vancian magic), the more kludgy and broken it gets.

I would recommend GURPS if you're looking for a game system that can pretty well handle any damn thing you want (probably with the Powers splatbook as well) at the cost of having a pretty serious learning curve; and FATE if you want something fast and loose and are comfortable with that (that one is like a genericized White Wolf, almost).

Well, that's my advice.

If you want to do superhero type characters, 2nd edition Mutants & Masterminds is where its all at.

3rd Edition is purportedly slightly more newb friendly, but I don't like some of the rules changes and it sacrifices a little flexibility. Still, YMMV.

I'll second DG's statement.

If your group favors something story based, cooperative, and relatively fast and loose then something like FATE is probably your best bet. D20/Pathfinder is very much focused on the mechanical end so anything that moves away from the extant mechanics tends to get very wonky very quickly, and that's leaving aside the possible inequalities inherent in the system. You CAN mock something up, but the inequalities inherent in the system will most likely require a level of cooperation and acceptance within the group that'd make a FATE game more functional anyway. FATE in general works off of concepts so it has a very wide versatility factor. I can't speak for GURPS because I don't have any experience with it, but the rest of what DG has said is spot on so I expect that's apt as well.

Something to consider but the main reason we're doing Pathfinder in the first place is because that's what we have.

Our GM has a thing about actually having the books on hand for referencing.

I might bring it up to him regardless but we'll see.

I'd offer my help, but I'm still waiting for my comic shop to restock. Last time he had them he sold them an hour before I got there. >.<

That said, I'll give the rules on the SRD a look through and see what I can figure for you. I'm unfamiliar with Mihawk's skillset, beyond wielding a giant sword, but I think I could work something out for Thor easily enough.

Best I could come up with on the guy trying to recreate Thor in PF is maybe a multiclass fighter/sorcerer or maybe a cleric. Magus would work too.

On the Mythic stuff, I've often heard varying opinions on the material. One of the more common opinions is that it makes things too easy, as the only challenges you'd then have are other mythic tier threats.
