...I have no excuses. The idea hit after I re-read "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Prachett. On the back cover it points out that "It's never just about football.
My thought process went: A Song of Ice and Fire +
= A Song of Ice and Football
SO. The entirety of ASoIaF's political maneuvering, hardcore dark fantasy, bleakness and setting transmuted into soccer. Yes. The Great Houses are the teams, the other House either the B-leagues or farm teams. Most of the characters would be involved in the league somehow, as players, aspiring players, managers or fans.
The Ice Football League has long been the center of Westeros' sports culture. The Targaryen Dragons were its star team before its list of scandals finally resulted in the team being dissolved and the family which owned it fled the country after Aerys II went insane and had to be killed by law enforcement officers.
Some characters, in no particular order:
Daenrys Targaryen and her family fled to a foreign country after the death of her father, before the family's debts could be called in. Her brother is a rampaging jackass with delusions of grandeur, and an up-an-coming player has taken interest in her.
Eddard "Ned" Stark is a contender for the league's best player ever. His team consistently does well, though there are concerns about why he isn't recognized as much as Robert when HE is the one who brought the Targaryen Dragons to their knees in the last game that team ever played.
Robert Barthenon and his team (the Barthenon Stags) now have the most star power, though there are fears that Robert is at risk of heart disease. Too bad he can't give up his star-powered life style.
Cersei Lannister is a raging bitch. This is actually a well kept secret. Her relationships with the main cast are virtually identical to the original series.
Jaime Lannister of the Lannister Lions is the most popular player in the league. He's also very good. May or may not have been the one to murder Aerys. (He is).
Rob Stark is Ned's son, and an aspiring player. He lacks his father's brilliance, but he's solid nonetheless.
Jon Snow is Ned's bastard son, and is being sent to the Night Watchers, a dead-end team to the north.
The story begins at a exhibition game between the Stags and the Stark Winter Wolves; when Ned Stark's youngest suffers a mysterious accident, even as the two teams prepare to head south for an All-Stars game...
Haven't thought much past this. Good/bad/RAAAAAGE?
