A ThunderbirdÆs Humor
A Calvin and Hobbes Short

[One Chapter]

ôItÆs so dark out now.ö

Calvin stared out his living room window at the ominous sky over his house, watching with amazement the dark, heavy clouds stifling the last of the hot summer sun. Next to him, Hobbes rested his paws on the windowsill and hummed in disappointment.

ôI suppose thatÆs it for swimming in the creek today.ö He declared.

Calvin threw up his hands. ôI know! ItÆs the hottest day of the year yet, and suddenly thereÆs a thunderstorm! Is this someoneÆs idea of a joke?ö

The tall tiger scratched his chin and contemplated this. ôWell, Thunderbirds are known for their sense of humor.ö

ôThunderbirds?ö Calvin eyed Hobbes closely.

ôYes, Thunderbirds, they create thunderstorms. TheyÆre big enough to carry off whales and their wingsÆ flapping makes the sound of thunder.ö Hobbes helpfully explained to the little boy.

HobbesÆ explanation had CalvinÆs eyes wide, and his first thought was of him standing atop an Eagle-like bird, his arms outstretched, and the wind whipping through his hair as the massive creature soared through the clear blue sky. A crack of thunder brought an immediate end to his fantasy, and he jumped back from the window.

Hobbes let out a laugh, his tail lashing about. ôA little scary wasn't it?ö

A lighting bolt crashed to the street right outside, creating an explosion of sound that physically shook the house. Though startled at first, Calvin immediately calmed down when he saw Hobbes, who was hiding behind a chair except for his completely bushy tail. Immediately, he began to laugh at his cowardice.

ôThey do have a good sense of humor.ö Calving hadnÆt even finished speaking when his indignant tiger descended upon him with claws outstretched and teeth bared.

The struggle that ensued was hilariously one-sided, with Calvin trying in vain to dislodge Hobbes as the latter clawed and bit the former. The fight was only ended by another loud rumble of thunder and the muted roar of extremely heavy rainfall. Pushing Hobbes off him, Calvin got up and returned to the window to watch the rain pour in sheets.

ôI hope it doesnÆt go like this all day.ö Calvin said.

Hobbes agreed. ôThere are going to be many puddles when this is over, thatÆs for sure.ö

There was another fearsome rumble of thunder, but definitely not as loud as the last one, and coming from the opposite direction from the first few rumbles. It seemed the storm was already beginning to pass, the rain diminishing and the sky becoming lighter.

ôI guess the Thunderbird is in a hurry.ö Calvin said.

Hobbes joined his side and leaned against the window sill again with a smile on his tiger face. ôIÆm sure itÆll be back through here soon.ö

Calvin frowned at the notion. ôNot too soon, IÆd like to go out swimming sometime this summer.ö

ôYes, as would I.ö Hobbes replied and both continued to watch the rainfall.

Another distant rumble of thunder followed. Closing his eyes, Calvin could see himself atop the back of the majestic creature, surrounded by soaring cumulonimbus clouds flashing to from the lightning within. Raising his hands like a God of Thunder, he summoned bolts to race across the sky and strike the landscape below to the sound of the thunderous flaps of the creatureÆs wings, as it flew off into the infinite distance.

And there you go. Short and sweet, just like the comics.

JUDGMENT!

Writing proficiency: 19/20
One error spotted here:
ôThey do have a good sense of humor.ö Calving hadnÆt even finished
Didn't see any other errors, but since I did find that one, it can't be said to be perfect and so I have to dock a point.

Theme: 20/20
Far as I can tell, it follows the theme spot on.

Depth: 16/20
Not particularly deep, but interesting. It fits the feel of the comic, so I'm not taking off too much.

Story: 18/20
A nice little summer piece, or a rainy day piece. Either way, fun to read, and inventive.

Personal Opinion: 20/20
I'm giving a couple extra points for your fandom choice; otherwise this would probably clock in about 18, though I can't think of any reason to dock you, reallly -- it just feels like about an 18.

TOTAL SCORE = 93
