A True Relationship

I was reading in the Harry Potter section and one poster said that

"You can say that any pairing was forced together because of Authorial Intervention"

Now this got me wondering, is there a pairing out there that actually makes sense?

What I mean is, is there a pairing that shows that it wasn't all OTL and all that.
That the people involved in the relationship actually grew into the relationship and it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows and world peace after they got together.

Now my question to you, Members of TFF, is "Is there a pairing out there that doesn't need/ have Authorial Intervention and still makes sense?"

IMHO, Sparhawk and Ehlana from David Eddings Elenium and Tamuli always seemed a realistic relationship fictional relationship.

Actually, I was thinking of another couple from David Eddings works when I saw this question; specifically Polgara and Durnik from the Belgariad and Malloreon series.

Those two fit as well. The fact that both series were co-written with Eddings' actual wife probably helped to write realistic relationships, that typically had some help in forming due to various cosmic beings...

There a are a few. A large, large part of it I think depends on how the relationship is developed and portrayed in the story. The biggest problems is that most writers seem to throw a relationship into the story without spending the time that such a thing would require to survive for any period of time.

Mercedes Lackey actually manages to score a few believable relationships (Skif & Nyara, Kethry & Jadrek, Elspeth & Darkwind) in her Valdemar novels, which is a surprising feat for an author who also used the 'soul bond' cliche in the same stories. :)
