Hello! Hopefully this is the right place to talk about something like this.
So I’m currently writing a story based on DanganRonpa’s ‘killing game’ mechanic. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically a murder mystery where 16 people are forced to kill each other, and there are 5 trials to figure out who the killer is each time. However, for this ‘fanganronpa’ (fan DanganRonpa), the characters are all from different types of media (e.g. video games, TV shows, etc.) — creating a crossover killing game.
Now, my story has gathered a bit of a following, with over 5000 hits and a little Discord server hosted by myself. This means people can post their theories on who might die next and who they think will survive so I can read them.
This is where the problem starts. At the moment, I’m on the 5th case, where the victim has been revealed (but not the killer). Afterwards, only 5 characters will be alive, and they will go onto have a final trial where they have a showdown against the ‘mastermind’ (the one who put them in the killing game). I had originally planned for all 5 characters to survive, then later on I decided on one character (let’s call them Y) to be a ‘sacrifice’, so the others could survive.
But, during discussions, a few people have been chiming in that another character, P, will probably die as they are a pure and nice character, which most people are attached to. If you know DanganRonpa, killing off a character everyone likes is a usual thing, as the game is all about hope and despair.
Now, I’m not sure what to do. Do I continue on and just kill off Y, and leave 4 survivors? Do I kill off both Y and P and leave 3 survivors? Or do I kill just P instead?
I feel as if making them both sacrifices isn’t as impactful as making only one sacrifice, as they both have different arcs. But, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad? As for the other 3, I want them to live 100%, so I’m not changing my mind on them. But it’s just Y and P I’m iffy about. Would people like it or not?
Of course I know that it’s my story so I do what I want with it, but I always have that feeling in the back of my mind that I want to make most people happy. And I don’t feel compelled to carry on writing because of all this which is annoying.
What are your thoughts on this? I can go into more details if you’d like (and even more specific — which is basically spoiler territory if no one cares). Thank you!
