An Old Idea Made New

Several years ago, I had an idea for a game fanfic rattling around in my head. I did a little bit of writing for it, but ultimately lost interest and never went any further. Now it's popped back up for no apparent reason and I really want to do something with it, but seeing as I've yet to ever finish a project on this scale, I figure I could do with some external encouragement.

The specific game I'm talking about is Castlevania 64: Legacy of Darkness.

Basically, it will be a re-telling of the game... with the alteration that instead of either Carrie Fernandez or Reinhardt Schneider going through the castle on their own, the two of them will be doing it side-by-side--at least, for those levels they shared. They will of course get split up after the Villa, meet up again in the Castle Center, then get seperated a second time and finally re-unite at the Clock Tower before going on to the final fight(s).

And of course there will be plenty of banter along the way. I'm probably going to add in a fair amount of humor; it seems to be a tendency in my writing.

I'm probably not going to have any flashbacks to Cornell, though I am pondering having Henry--the kid he rescues and who comes back while Carrie and Reinhardt are doing their thing and rescues kids himself--make a brief appearance in the beginning and scattered further ones later on.

I also intend to not follow too closely to the various backstory details not really mentioned directly in the game itself, since it's been officially disowned by the series and removed from canon. For example, I'm moving the setting up from 1855 to the 1930s, since there's skeletons on motorbikes and a chainsaw-wielding gardener (two devices that weren't invented until the 20th Century). It also lets me set it against a more recognizable backdrop; lots more people knew what was going on in Europe in the 1930s than in the 1850s.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Opinions? I'm not sure how widespread knowledge of this particular game is, and I know there's some negative stigma about it...

While I haven't played Castlevania (at least not since the NES era), this could be pretty interesting if you do it right.

If you're aiming for comedy, you might want to decide very early on if you're going to be doing a commentary on the Castlevania series.

Maybe have them referencing other games in the series or variations throughout the game:

*seeing the Medusa in Castlevania 64: Legacy of Darkness*

"Hey, I thought Medusa was a half-decomposed corpse."

"I heard she was a totally naked babe who'll lay anyone."

"That's what you said about the ghost maids AND the dryads and I have yet to get some much as a hug, let alone anything further than that."

You could also have a wild parody, where monsters call in sick, so a temp agency sends monsters who've been out of work in their place.

"Why the hell are we fighting the Eggplant Wizard?"

"He was the only one who could make it on short notice."

You could also toss in some rejoinders about the various quirks of the castlevania games,

"How the hell did meat appear when I whipped a candle?"

"Nevermind that. It's delicious!"

"GAH! Do you know how long that meat might have been sitting there?!"

"Nope, and I don't care."

"Huh. This one spat out a battle axe six times the size of my head, yet I can pick it up with ease."

I'm not going for ridiculous over-the-top humor. It'll be mixed in with more serious and dramatic bits. Nor am I intending to draw too much attention to game mechanics and stuff.

Also, I've not played any other Castlevania games, aside from the two N64 ones, so I wouldn't really know what to reference.
