Authenticator Change

Blizzard has announced in a sticky on the technical support thread that they're changing the authentication process a bit.

If you use an authenticator û and we hope you do û you may soon notice that an authenticator prompt may not appear with every login. WeÆve recently updated our authentication system to intelligently track your login locations, and if youÆre logging in consistently from the same place, you may not be asked for an authenticator code. This change is being made to make the authenticator process less intrusive when weÆre sure the person logging in to your account is you.

We hope to continue improving the authenticator system to ensure the same or greater security, while improving and adding features to make having one a more user friendly experience. So basically, if you always log in from the same place (i.e. your house), you won't be bugged for an authentication as often.

I can't help but think that they might've primarily done this to lower strain on their authentication servers. Plus, it's kinda smart, because if you're not one for playing wow while you travel, it'll be a lot more obvious that they should be upping the security when they get an attempt to access your account from, say, another country entirely.

People who travel a lot probably won't notice this difference at all.

Though I wish they'd placed this in the patch notes, as it spooked the shit out of me and made me think someone had hacked my account and somehow found a way to remove my authenticator (to make it easier to siphon items)

Same here, though I didn't know the reason till I read your post. Since Battle.net takes forever to load on my computer, and I mean to the point that the connection to the server or whatever times out, I didn't know y I wasn't asked.
