It turning out like this is a distinct possibility. One of my biggest problems with Avatar was how they handled the ending. They pretty much candy coated the entire ending with how Aang doesn't have to kill the Fire Lord and gave him a cop out.

That and there was everyone was at peace from just defeating the Fire Lord. My 12 year old cousin turned around and asked me after watching it, what happened to all the rest of the troops. Did they just give up?

Just tell him they were all in the blimps and died when the blimps crashed. Sokka, mass murderer.

Zuko SAID they still have a lot of work to do but Ozai was defeated and his heir went crazy unless the generals really don't accept agnikai results and coronations backed by sages (and if they accepted Ozai's ascension by last will after his dad's unfortunate broken neck from stumbling from shooting himself in the back three times in the head from falling down an elevator shaft due to a cup of tea that doubles as excellent weed killer you're going to have to explain this) then just have Aang sink their ships and Zuko share military intel so the EK stationed forces are effectively outmaneuvered. Besudes the army was fighting to finish line of the comet. Day came and they LOST their major military gains for the year (and were still reeling from the fleet sinkage up north). Playing nice now is a GREAT idea.
