I'm nearly certain that the Avatar is merely the vessel for the world spirit. Hence how the next Avatar can be born on the same time as the previous one dies. It's merely transfering hosts, not reincarnating.
As far as I can tell, this is correct. Whoever the current incarnation of the Avatar happens to be, is just one particular example of the world-spirit's vessel. This is why previous Avatars can temporarily possess, or separate from, the Avatar's current incarnation. They retain their own spirit identities after their physical deaths.

It's pretty well known that the different types of Bending are based on real martial arts styles. Recently I've been wondering...what if someone used the Drunken Fist as a Bending style. What element would they use, and how effective would it probably be? Personally I think either Water or Air would be the most likely candidates.

Maybe one of the previous/future Avatars create a style based on it, that's solely for Avatars because it isn't confined to any one element.

It couldn't be Earth as that is based around defense, not evasion. And Fire is out because it's all about control.

I think an interesting idea would be if instead of running across Iroh, when Toph runs away temporarily she runs into Zuko. As of the moment both of them have no idea who the other is, or their allegiances. I could see a bit of bonding as Zuko comments on how life has always been against him, but he's survived despite his hardships, while Toph mutters about her family situation and how she was treated as a fragile little doll and how she can't see, but she's thrived despite her "handicap."

The changes of this would be quite intriguing, and there would be a much closer bond with Zuko and Toph when they meet again.

Actually no that isn't true. Earth is based around Holding your ground. Which doesn't actually have to be defensive, it can be evasive in such a way that you don't give up ground. A friend of mine was actually talking to me about it one day (long before avatar came out actually) where he was supposed to learn an 'earth' style mentality. Part of what he realized was that it wasn't simply about defending so much as it was about positioning. Air gives up ground for maneuverability, Fire takes ground and advances, water goes where ever the going is good, and earth Holds its position.

Listening to Bumi's Jing lecture actually reminded me of that when i first heard it.

With that said though Drunken style would be a very water type style, as its entire basis is on going with the flow, advancing and retreating into and from territory via evasive maneuvering.
From that perspective as an 'Air' style it would end up being something akin to 'air closest to water' or 'air closest to earth' cause a part of it is the foot work that emphasizes holding your ground how ever off balance you are.

Here's an idea: AU of "The Blind Bandit," if her family didn't firmly grasp the idiot ball and accepted who she was.

"It makes me realize something," Lao Beifong says.

And Toph holds her breath. She hopes. Hopes so much that it hurts.

"It makes me realizeà that we were wrong. We aren't ashamed of you. We just want you to be safe. But more, we want you to be happy."

Her breath goes out all in a whoosh, and Toph has to swallow past the sudden lump in her throat. For some strange reason, she has no urge to leave now. And besides, she doesn't need to travel the world all that badly.

Lao then turns to the other three children, and bows. "And of course we would be honored to have our daughter teach the Avatar..." he looks back to Toph. "If you are willing.

I'm not sure how that would change things. It's not like they could stay at Toph's mansion with out it being razed to the ground.

Right so we've seen how the various elements can be focused differently and get various results.

Firebenders can make Lightningbend (somehow)
Earthbenders can Metalbend (I get how)
Waterbenders can Bloodbend (obvious)
But what about Airbenders?

But more to the point what about unexpected uses of those variations? Bloodbending being used in conjunction with healing abilities to pull off crazy self-healing wolverine shit? And would bloodbendng your own body get past chi-blocking? I can understand it removes the ability to bend but does it get down that deep? I get nerve clusters and what-have-you but "chi" points aren't like the Hyuuga from Naruto who actually target something IN the body. As pointed out a benders abilities may be genetic but bending elements is a spiritual act.

So my question is, is "chi blocking" just blocking the spiritual connection between the spirit and the element or is is just locking down on the spirit? To use nasu-verse terms is it blocking the Mana or is it blocking the Od?

If it the spirit its blocking and not the element then that's some pretty scary shit.

But if its blocking the connection between the element then theoretically a waterbender could use bloodbending on themselves without as many problems. On another note has anyone thought about using bloodbending on themselves or has anyone tried it in fanfiction?

I blame Legend of Korra.

Firebenders can generate lightning and some can even redirect it but they're not really bending it like they would fire. I don't think it's not something they have any real control over besides 'point and shoot'

Other than generating static electricity you sometimes see in fiction, I'd go with Soundbending.

Has anyone done a Fic when Sozin ended up being the Avatar? He was born on the same day as Roku, so there shouldn't be any issue on that end.

So would Sozin continue his plans to conquer the world, aided by the raw power of being the Avatar? Or would living with the other cultures and the past lives of the Avatar help avert the war?

It means her parents wouldn't be sending people out to kidnap her, for one.

Idea: The Avatar spirit left Aang while he was frozen to reincarnate again. Aang wakes up from the iceberg to find he's no longer the avatar.

Hrm, would that make it skip to the next element or choose another air-bender? And if the latter would that enable the air-benders to live.

I suppose this all depends on how long Aang is frozen before it decides to choose a new host.

Lets just say it continued in the cycle, meaning a water bender is the next one.

Still depends when it decides to move on.

If it decides to wait ~30 or so years it would be around the time Hama was born. Wonder how that would affect things.

Gafgar, that does change a lot, but not in the way you're thinking. Because once Azula finds out her parents will either be taken in by the local king, or depending on which part of the country they are in will be branded traitors when Azula takes over.

So I had an idea for a piece of fanfiction for the new series.

The King of Omashu has been kidnapped by ninjas! Are you a bad enough dude to save the King? (Note: dude is intended for gender-neutral use)
Spoiler: The King of Omashu is Sokka

Just getting this Amon identity drabble out of my head.

He remembered.

He remembered those days long ago, having died amongst his colleagues and their kin with a smile on his lips. He had no children or the like of his own, too busy with work to have even thought of settling down, but such was a decision that he'd made peace with well before his passing. he tried not to think about the vocation of his former life, as when he thought of work he would inevitably think about...Them.

The destroyers...

The defilers...

The breakers of his dreams!

Now now. He didn't need to let such things take away from his happiness. Afterall, he was here in the spirit realm, with his beloved. That was much better to think about, how she had drawn him to this realm simply because she so favored him. Yes he had been one of those that ripped her children from her, but even so he treated them with the reverence they deserved, even going so far as to mourn them when those skiving defilers would crush them underfoot without a second thought! But in their mutual ire, and respect for her works, the two had found peace in this world.

But she has grown ill. As all of the spirits have.

The humans have forgotten the fellowships of old, in their arrogant clamor for power and identity. The benders show a flagrance and disrespect for the powers that gave them this blessing. Those without bending attempt to compensate for their impotence by proving themselves the master of the world. Even the spirits in the human world hide all the deeper in fear that they would face the same fate that nearly befell the Moon spirit. A ghastly thought.

And what of the Avatar? The hope of the two worlds, now mired in the living world like a pig in the mud, ignoring their cries and pleas to bring balance. It is because of this one, who brought power and bending to the humans, that chaos is sewn.

But I told her I would help her. That I would leave her verdant embrace and return to the human world. They have whispered the secrets of power to me, to give and take it. I would use this to strip the bending from the unworthy! And those without it, I shall take the helm of their ilk and make them see their errors! The Avatar was meant to guide the two worlds. I will force them.

With the aid of the spirits, I claw my way to the human world, sunlight nearly blinding. Perhaps a mask will be in order, to help with this harsh sunlight. But that is for another time, while I rake my hands through the soil and smile.

As the Avatar was the one to sew the discord, it seemed appropriate for the Cabbage Man that would reap its harvest.

Warring States Earth Kingdom

Thousands of years before the 100 year war, the Earth Kingdom is the perfect county, unified under the benevolent rule of the Earth King. But it is also a country of powerful factions, great lords and potent magnates.

When the Earth King dies with no clear heir, the Earth Kingdom balkanises into warring factions, each trying to cease the Badger Mole throne. The Avatar (an ageing Water Tribe native) swoops in and forms the Council of Ba Sing Se. He calls all the great men to Ba Sing Se and charges them to elect a new Earth King and rule the Earth Kingdom while they do so. He also orders a stop to all hostilities while this happens. To ensure they are able to do so, he charges the general of the Royal Earthbender Guards with securing peace and order in the city, independent of the Council. The general is loyal man and gives his all to this duty.

For two years, the council meets and argues and the Earth Kingdom knows a tense peace. But when the Avatar dies suddenly, the peace is shattered. The Royal Earthbender Guards maintain order in Ba Sing Se and the Council still meets but outside the great walls, armies march and battle.

With the collapse in order, so does the systems used to find a new Avatar. Instead of being found, he grows up as a street rat refugee in the war torn Earth Kingdom, unaware of his heritage. Can he bring peace to the Earth Kingdom?

We can probably link up some of the factions with current canon. Perhaps the Great General Huan Beifong is preparing to march his army north from its camp at Gaoling to make his own play for power?

Not only that but didn't Toph learn metal-bending when she was kidnapped? If so supporting parents actually mean no metal-bending changing the whole game... for Korra at least.
