Average Scores of PS3/360 exclusives.

So I wrote a python script that scraped the wikipedia list of all PS3 and 360 exclusives, and then crossreferenced metacritic to create a score.

Main reason for this is that, now that the PS4 and Xbone are out, I can start getting PS3/360 games/console for cheap. Since all non-exclusive PS3/360 games that I want I got on the PC, this is basically a list for 'how much money am I willing to spend for this console for the only games on it I don't have.'
Figured you guys might get some use out of it as well, so enjoy.

This is probably common knowledge but always realize scores are at best a starting point for this sort of thing so don't pin your hopes purely on 90+ games blindly, and in turn don't scoff at the stuff below 80 unless the reviews are pointing out glaring flaws that you know you'd personally just hate. Better idea is probably to catalog these into your preferred generic genres first, then start looking at scores to narrow down the good ones as you go through it on a case by case basis, before going into the actual reviews themselves to see whether or not there are bits in there you really happen to hate.

And especially look into if the Multiplayer component is still active somewhat at this point if that's a focus point of the game (And of course what you're specifically buying it for). Would suck to buy a dead multiplayer game with a really shit single player component. Then there's also probably issues with you being unleveled but I don't really do Multiplayer at all so I've got no clue how that goes down, and it might in itself be on a game by game basis too so better look up that as well if possible. Either way just keep this in mind at least because that's probably the greatest main weakness of not getting in on a console/multiplayer game day one. Doesn't really affect me since I don't do Multiplayer ever, but for others it could be a big factor you want to look into.

Also a good idea to put the wackier titles into a bin to look at in depth later. The sort of stuff that can't really be categorized like normal, your Folklores and your Little Big Planets and what have you. You'll probably realize most shooters are shooters pretty early, and Uncharted and Arkham both started their own specific sort of generic genres themselves a bit ago that you can easily put them into boxes with. But there's always those weird games with the weird mechanics that stand out and are pretty unique in their own rights that you won't get the jist of until you personally take a more in depth look at them.

Then again I'm the guy who compiled a list of all the interesting stuff I wanted going to buy a PS3 or 360 for later, and quickly realized the 360 was long since out of the running a while ago. :snigger:

Honestly, metacritic scores are pretty hit and miss to begin with. However, it's a good way to get a very general sort of feel for the quality of the game, which is what I'm interested in here- I know nearly none of these games, save the ones that are 90+, so having some sort of general idea of what's worth remembering when I go into a used game store is priceless.

E.G: Never heard of heavy rain, but aparently it's worth looking into. There's four 'Forza Motorsports' games that are rated extremely well? What be this 'Journey' that scored better than Uncharted?

Yeah, it's why I said they're good for a starting point, sort of weeding out the bad ones largely. Some people use them as gospel though, which I find laughable, especially since a lot of scores can be altered based on perceived fear of viewers dropping the site if too low a score is given for some games.

Especially with a lot of less savory people on the internet causing huge backlashes against sites with a perceived too low score. An 80 for GTA5 I believe was one of the more recent ones. Or maybe it was even just a 90.

Which is particularly hilarious because months later when the fervor dies down they tend to start agreeing with a lot of the Critic's issues with the game, Bioshock Infinite's 'Inferior Gameplay' to the originals being a good example of that happening I believe. Now that's generally somewhat accepted criticism rather than LIES AND SLANDER.

Eh, to be fair, sometimes the reviewer really does have it wrong. Last shitstorm I've seen was Destructoid giving Link Between Worlds at 65. The comment section was delicious.

To be fair, I think destructoid mainly does shit like that just to get page hits. They kind of have a history. Which is another issue with metacritic: it includes the reviews that are just viewbaiting fanboys.

Also doesn't help that the number system itself is borked. Since when is anything under 7 particularly bad? The vast majority of games should be under seven, seven being average is patently absurd because more games are over it than not, meaning those games that are arbitrarily 'bad' tend to be completely arbitrary as to what score they get. Any score under seven, or at the very least 6 does not functionally matter because the scale is like this.

We have effectively 6 irrelevant bad values that aren't used effectively at all, and only 4 'good' ones that are too broad to get any sort of proper scaling with thanks to this bs. And don't get me started on adding the point values either. :sweat2:

Hell, almost makes me want to start a massively popular reviewing site where 1-4 are all the bad values and 5-10 covers decent to good, just to mess things up for them. :snigger:

What's particularly hilarious is that on paper that sounds actually right too. :huh:

Really ranking systems and humans don't work well together. We've got all sorts of biases and pressure to rank things in a certain way. And then you get issues like trying to compare two games of completely different genres and deciding which one is 'better' even when they're competing in completely different areas... well how are you supposed to decide what the game of the year was (which admittedly isn't that hard if you decide to just put games up for the prize that are all basically the same genre and type)?

You end up with a multipartite, loosely linked graph for each review catagory.

Then you, the user, signal how important each part of a game is to you (like controls, story, gameplay, graphics, sound) and the mahalanobis distance of a game from the known compared games in the weighted tree is the review score- according to your own tastes.

Obviously the weights would be refined automatically- for example, by asking you to score some games. You can't trust the user to actually be able to quantify their own standards.

Netflix is meh if you don't watch movies, but Hulu is awesome for Anime fans. They have tons of it and a lot of it is both subtitled and dubbed. You might want to check out Hulu.

Any publisher that's been around for a while will tell you that getting rid of scores altogether only sounds like a good idea.

It's been tried by several outlets and the whining of idiots too lazy to read an article has always reached epic levels. It's not worth it to bother with trying because the vast majority of people who buy games are twitchy idiots who don't like to read.

If you've not noticed, the popularity of games has risen at the same rate as the amount of in game text that is required reading for gameplay as gone down. Even when there is text it's usually read to the player by a narrator.

Review scores aren't going anywhere. If a review site/publication doesn't have them, they get flooded with complaints until they adopt such a system.

You can also browse normally and some sections aren't directed content, such as the 'Popular on Netflix', 'New Additions', or 'New Releases' sections.

It doesn't bother me with sites like Netflix because I tend to only browse through the newest stuff anyway, and generally if I'm looking for something older I already know what I'm looking for and just use the search engine to find it.

I don't mind Anime, but I'm not a huge fan either. I much prefer manga versions of stories. I can count the amount of anime shows and movies I watched in the last three years on one hand assuming you aren't counting porn of course. [See what I did there? One hand! >_< HAW!]

I grew up with Anime first though, so I do get in the mood for it from time to time. Hulu is always enough to satisfy that rare urge when it does crop up.
