Bad History in fics

So I was reading a story earlier today that was supposed to take place in 2002...and they started talking about a characters YouTube and Facebook history; which if I remember correctly YouTube was launched in 2005 with Facebook launching in 2006? My point to this is that this fic was probably written by a teen who isn't old enough to remember a time before the common internet...I feel old now.

By the way FaceBook was actually started in 2004, though you were right about YouTube.

I see stuff like that all the time in fanfiction... people tend to write what they know... but it is annoying seeing fanfics of series taking place years ago and they talk of abilities of modern internet, email, of course the massive overuse of cell phones... or digitized music formats...

There are people whom do not even realize exactly what a 4track/8track/micro-cassette/mini-cassette/DAT/mini-disc/cassette/VHS/VHS-C/Beta/Laserdisc/VCD player is.

Or for that matter what a floppy/ls120/zip/zipcd/Bernoulli disk is.

Or old computer formats many cannot play anymore with out going out of their way for like RealMedia/Shockwave/Cinepak/Divx formats.

Off topic, but I'm pretty sure Media Player Classic is still compatible with most of those formats today.
