So James Cameron is doing a battle angel movie apparentlly, old news I know. I hope for the best but with my past experiences for live action movies I cant help but feel that the series that got me into manga is going to take a major hit. Any thoughts?

Yep thats the one.

The story as I heard it is a drunken weekend+a few volumes of Battle Angel Alita+ James Cameron's brain gave us the 1st Terminator.

Avatar was apparently one big FX tech test for the Battle Angel Movie he's wanted to do (but knew he couldn't pull off visually) since the 80's

Better throw some Harlan Ellison and Philip K. Dick in there too, Rabe.

You've got a point there, tho in my defense the way I described is the way a friend of mine told the tale to me.

Also, I just Wiki'd Alita/Gunnm. It was only published in 1990.

Maybe it was T2 ?

hm I'm sure there was a reason this made sense in my head.

I guess I'll try backtracking the rumor till I hit facts.

Okay it looks like my friend was blowing smoke and or High or perhaps he simply didn't have his math right.

Going by a 2009 interview with MTV
<a href='http://www.scifiscoop.com/news/james-cameron-talks-battle-angel-and-avatar-2/' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>http://www.scifiscoop.com/news/james-camer...l-and-avatar-2/</a>

Cameron's has been planning and laying the ground work for Battle Angel Alita since sometime in 1995.

Meaning the only Cameron based Terminator tittle that may have been influenced by Battle Angel would T2 3-D: Battle Across Time

Hnn... I'm going to be highly skeptical about it.

Cameron is one of the few Hollywood names I'd be able to envision handling a conversion like this. I mean, how far ahead of the curve was he when he was fapping to GitS?

Even with that, though, I don't like the odds.

Very Understandable in fact it's a sentiment I share, I'm trying to take hope in the fact Cameron's Avatar was only intended as an Effects test for the Battle Angel project, and look how well that did.

Is that why Avatar didn't have a plot or decent characters? So much is explained.

Who knows what's going to happen with this. It seems like pure profit potential's going to 'force' him into making a sequel to Avatar, so even though they've theoretically been doing tests for a Gunnm movie for a while, it might still be on hold for another few years.

I really do hope that we get something good out of this. Given the recent cancellation of the manga, it might be some time before we get more Gally/Alita.

Pretty much yeah, I think Avatar was minimalist in those regard so it have to stand on its visual spectacle.

OTOH I happen to like Avatar but I feel how you like that movie has a lot to do with the issuses you bring with you into the viewing.

He's had the rights to a Battle Angel movie for some time now.
I hope he doesn't just cover the whole Hugo thing that took up the first volume and anime. The best arc visually would probably be the lead up and ending to her job as an agent of Tiphares.

Because the train would be awesome. So would the human characters.

They wanted the author/artist to go back to the original series from the 90s and edit out the words 'crazy', 'psycho' and something else in order to be politically correct. He agreed, but was pissed. Then he went 'wait, wtf' and demanded that they undo the change. Which makes sense considering they didn't want him to change Last Order's 'crazy' and 'psycho' just the rerelease of the original series.

The series is canceled with the current distributor. Author may just go to another manga company.

Manga creator Yukito Kishiro reported in a Wednesday blog entry that he met with the editors of Kodansha's Evening magazine and Shueisha's Ultra Jump magazine to arrange for the return of his Battle Angel Alita: Last Order (GUNNM: Last Order) manga. Kishiro had put his manga on hiatus last month after the 100th installment ran in Ultra Jump (pictured at right).

According to Kishiro, a Shueisha editor had asked him on June 7 to revise dialogue in the original Battle Angel Alita manga for a new reprint (pictured below). However, Kishiro was in the middle of finishing the 100th Last Order manga installment before its deadline. Kishiro asked the editor if he realized that imposing this request might mean Kishiro will miss his deadline for the Last Order installment and will refuse to allow more reprints of his manga, and the editor said yes. Kishiro did make the dialgoue changes and finished the current installment on time. However, he then announced Battle Angel Alita: Last Order's hiatus on June 24 and added that there might never be a 101st installment.

On Tuesday, Kishiro met with the editors of Evening magazine. While he has met with the Evening editors several times before, Tuesday's meeting was the first one at Kodansha's headquarters in Tokyo's Gokokuji area. He discussed with Evening's editor-in-chief the possiblity of moving not only Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, but all of his works to Kodansha.

However, he met with the Ultra Jump editors one more time on Wednesday to see if he could resolve the issues he had there. He gave a final offer of settlement to the Ultra Jump editors: the legal department must apologize to him for questioning the three sections of dialogue in the new reprint of Battle Angel Alita, and Shueisha must recall the new reprint edition and revert the revised sections to their original form. The Ultra Jump editors told Kishiro that they could not make any promises, but they would try to discuss the offer with the legal department.

Kishiro said that if the final settlement offer goes through, he will return to Shueisha and resume the Battle Angel Alita: Last Order manga in Ultra Jump. If the final offer does not go through, he will switch publishers to Kodansha and resume the Battle Angel Alita: Last Order manga in Evening. He expects that the outcome of the discussions between Ultra Jump's editors and Shueisha's legal department will be revealed by next week.

Viz Media publishes both the original Battle Angel Alita manga and the Last Order manga in North America. The 15th Last Order volume shipped in Japan on June 18, and the 13th volume shipped in North America in June as well.

So that's what happens when a manga artist retains control over his creation? I am gladdened by this.

It was probably a situation in which it wasn't a big deal at the time, but later when thinking about it the author decided that his original work should stand as is, and not be edited to become "Politically Correct" for some people. The same "people" that argued about the word usage of Battle Angel Alita have obviously not read the manga, possibly other than a text script, and could not appreciate the situation and characterization that made it so damned intriguing as a series.
----------
The psychology, martial arts, science, society, politics, and the technology are wonderfully thought out, illustrated, and explained for the laymen, while containing slivers of realism without ruining the fantastical happenings of the Last Order universe. Anyone who seeks to diminish the series does not have a clue as to what they are trying to stifle, and should let the series speak for itself.

Here's hoping James Cameron doesn't futz it up.
