Interesting... However, if I had a complaint, it is that Rock is smart enough IMHO to realize something odd is going on that he was called there on a Saturday nigh, given multiple drinks, and did not do anything.

In a odd sort of way, it was their first date.

Out of curiosity, when in canon does this take place? For that manner, is it manga or anime canon? Though not as big a deal as some series, since practically all anime events took place in manga, just a slightly different order.

Another thing, he did not recognize Sawyer, yet she tried to kill him at one point (well, Jane, but she was with him).

Rock knows what Sawyer looks like yes, but he's never heard of her name. Ever. So I wouldn't put it past him to recognize who it is.

The ending with Rock speaking his interest to Balalaika came off as a bit quirky. It didn't really flow well with the type of dialogue it was running along with paragraphs earlier. Yes you were trying to imply something, but given that you've watched Black Lagoon, Balalaika wouldn't just jump the gun with this sort of thing.

It would have had much better flow were the setting to change with a new comer or some moderate size drug-cartel being taken apart by Balalaika because they were encroaching on Hotel Moscow's territory and doing illegal business there.

With Balalaika inviting Rock to the massacre, they having a few drinks as they watched everything unfold. Then say during the ending keep the same lines you have as the originial, except the cartel boss being brought in front of Rock and Balalaika. She withdraws a gun from her pocket and point it at the scared-shitless cartel and right before she pulls the trigger, the dialogue kicks in;

ôInteresting,ö the Russian smirked. ôSo who is the third person you find attractive that you talk to?ö

ôàö the white shirted man pulled at his collar. ôà ItÆs you, Balalaika-san.ö
Then the thank-you for the drinks and leaving, and as Rock has turned the corner and is out of sight of the events. The gun-shots go off, but he keeps walking.

------

First part is the review, second part is just a suggestion. It worked fairly well, but the scene-setting coupled with the dialogue didn't grant the reader the effect I think you were going for.

While I like what I read, after reading what Timewave Zero said, I have to agree with him. I really don't see Balalaika just inviting Rock over just to talk; it would be more in character for her to have some business that's requiring Rock to be there before segueing into the question about RoanapurÆs "hospitality".

On the other hand, I think the situation that Timewave Zero is also a little too extreme. Why? Because Balalaika runs Hotel Moscow like a military unit and it would be unprofessional on her part to just start talking to Rock in the middle of an interrogation about his personal life. After the business is over and done with, then yes, I can see her decide to satisfy her curiosity.

Two tactics that I can see work that would bring Rock to Hotel Moscow that I think would fit; both based off the same premise. We know that Balalaika doesn't speak Japanese and it's logical that she can't read it as well and she trusts Rock to interpret correctly so 1) Hotel Moscow 'acquired' some documents that need to be translated (blood stains optional) or 2) Hotel Moscow has a prisoner who speaks Japanese and they need Rock to interpret for the interogation.

Depending on the time line, I'd suggest 1) unless this takes place after Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise then 2) could work since Rock knows more how Hotel Moscow works and wouldn't do (or at least be less inclined to) do something stupid in the middle of the interrogation.

Something I really like about Balalaika's character is that despite her scars and her intensity at accomplishing her goals, she has a moment with Rock, a gun to his face somewhere around ep 24, that she forgives his insult to her, implying that she likes him. Thus, this piece is NOT out of character, though Rock is clearly befuddled by the vodka to miss her point. Then again, women can be too subtle for their own good sometimes, something I believe they curse as a weakness here in the real world. Rock is in a quadrangle with Revy, Ela, and Balalaika. Funny thing, how speaking English and insisting on the Salaryman look can take him so far. Rock is this little piece of normal in Roanapur, something these extreme women can appreciate because he's something they can't have anymore. He's a fantasy to them, approachable fantasy. A reminder of gentler times and he doesn't flinch at their wildness. For them, he's sort of the holy grail.

He didn't insult her, ever. He tried to plead with her on an issue, which I quote from her own mouth amused her. She never saw it coming that Rock would say something like that, it also as it stood was a statement that put Rock in a direct path between her and her goals.

Normally that would be insulting, but she finds Rock to be a rather interesting character. Thus it doesn't come off as being an insult, but just a startling comment. Also I highly doubt he planned on killing him even though she held him at gun point, she needed A. a good translator, B. Eventally have Revy calm down and C. she owed Dutch a thing or two and while she is quite powerful in Roanapur, killing one of Dutch's crew-mates is not something she's willing to consider doing willingly.

Though,

Epic statement is Epic.

A. I'm amazed this is alive. I'm seeing zombies everywhere these days.
B. Revy seems a lot more jealous whenever someone even suggests an interest in him.
Have to admit, Rock could make a living that way.

Having Revy and other people from the Lagoon company calling Balalaika Fry face sounds weird specially since Revy for example respects her enough to call her Anego which basically means older sister.

So calling her fry face in her back not only sounds strange but it's potentially asking for an early demise.

And while I agree that Rock can be some sort of fantasy for many women you also have to remember that he does grows a pair of balls during the manga, rock not onyl dresses like a salary man, he's a natural negotiator and also a strategian, Rock is probably one of the few people in his business that doesn't carries a gun his weapon is his own intellect.

I would say that another reason why women would find him attractive is because he can pull the magnificent bastard troupe quite well when needed.

And also remember in the later manga chapters he and Revy seem to be having something going on, specially if you consider how protective she can get when other females want to make moves on him like greenback Jane in the latest arc.

I'm pretty sure it was Revy who started the whole Fry Face thing in the dub. Don't quote me on that though.

Ah the sweet sound of vulgarity.

I'm kind of surprised that you've introduced this kind of plot into Black Lagoon and it still feels like Black Lagoon. Also, you've got Rock down to a t.

Good job.

Considering that the only ones who use it do so when they want to really insult her I wouldn't be so sure. Revy's (usually) not an idiot.

Unfortunately, I've hit a bit of a brick wall with this one.

I mean, you might have seen the next scene(s) on BYTM, but I don't know what happens after that.

"Phantom: Phantom of Inferno" is one of those visual novels, more recently though they've made it into an anime, I'm trying to find a good sub for it though.

Basic plot: Japanese exchange student stumbles into the seedy underworld of organized crime, only this isn't just some simple gang he encounters but a full fledged organization - Inferno - that handles international relations for the various factions to keep the peace -and in cases such as the one as the main protagonist gets caught up in originally- they are also responsible for silencing any competition or... witnesses.

Long story short, they are actually impressed with his instincts for survival and determine he has that "killer instinct" that's needed to be one of the best assassins in the world. They capture instead of kill him and wipe his memory to turn him into a living weapon and he... excels beyond even what the protagonist much less what the higher ups in Inferno thought him capable of.

Well no good crime story is without its betrayals, intrigue, drugs, car chases, gun fights and of course femme fatales just around every corner.

In one possible ending though is what I was talking about, where the protagonist is able to fully get out of that life once and for all and return to japan and give another try at a normal life but... he looks at the world differently now, he sees the darker elements clear as day and knows no matter how long it takes one day it'll suck him back in. After all: once an assassin, always an assassin.

As to who: "Zwei" is the codename given to the protagonist.
"Phantom" is the codename for the top assassin Inferno employs.

Reposting what I have in one go to redo the formatting.

There might be a bit more than what you've seen elsewhere. I can't remember. In fact, I can barely remember what I was thinking with this one.

Balalaika held her right index finger in the air. It was a signal for her visitor to remain silent until she was ready to deal with him.

“I’ll leave it in your hands then, Yuri,” the blonde said into the mouthpiece. After hanging up the phone, she turned to look at the man on the other side of the desk.

“I hope I haven’t caused you too much hassle by calling you in here on a Saturday night, Rock.”

“It’s no bother, Balalaika-san,” the Japanese man smiled. “What can I do for you?”

“Take a seat, Rock,” the scarred woman smiled as she gestured to the chair that was just to her left. “Would you like to join me in a drink? Tea, coffee or perhaps something a bit stronger?”

Rock noticed that his host was pouring herself a drink of vodka. “A vodka and tonic would be nice, Balalaika-san,” he answered as he took his seat.

“Sorry, but there’s no tonic water. Say, you’ve been here in Roanapur for a while, haven’t you?” Balalaika asked, handing the man his drink.

“A year and a half, why?”

“Well,” the Russian trailed off as she pulled out a cigar and lit it. “I like to know who I’m dealing with.”

The blonde’s piercing blue eyes were starting to make Rock feel nervous. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it up, despite smoking three on the way there. “I don’t know what to tell you, Balalaika-san. What do you want to know about me?”

“I’m sure you’re aware of our information network here in the city, Rock.”

Rock nodded.

“Well, one of my lieutenants has noticed that you’ve not been enjoying Roanapur’s hospitality,” Balalaika said, taking a sip of her drink. “I don’t mean you don’t go out drinking with Dutch and the gang.”

“What do you mean?” the former Salaryman asked, taking a short drag.

“You’re too old to be that coy, Rock,” the Russian smirked. “You know what the girls in this town offer and for what sort of price. So, why haven’t you picked up a girl or two for a little fun?”

“…” the Japanese man let a deep breath before bringing his cigarette back to his lips. “Well, to be honest with you, I’m not comfortable with that sort of disposable relationship.”

“Oh?” the blonde asked before taking a long drag on her cigar. After letting out a plume of smoke, she continued. “Why not?”

Rock could only shake his head at the surreal direction the conversation seemed to be heading. “Well, it’s not that I’m shocked and appalled that a girl would offer their bodies for money – I’m not trying to take the moral high ground.”

“It wouldn’t bother me if you were.”

“I guess that I’m looking for something a bit more…, well, I can’t say ‘permanent’, not when we don’t know what’s going to happen in the city tomorrow,” the Japanese man replied, unsurprised by the woman’s comment. He stubbed out his cigarette and pulled out another. “I’d like to get to know who I’m getting into bed with.”

Balalaika let out an amused chuckle. “I think you’re the closest thing this place has to a romantic, Rock.”

Rock didn’t know how to respond to that, so took the chance to drink some more vodka. He quickly drained the cut crystal glass and lit his fresh cigarette.

“Another drink?” the Russian asked with a smile still on her face.

“Yeah,” the man nodded. When they both had fresh drinks, he held his glass up. “Kampai!”

“Kampai,” the blonde reciprocated. “But still, don’t you get lonely?”

“Don’t remind me,” Rock muttered. “I never was any good with the whole dating thing.”

After another sip of his drink, he noticed that Balalaika was looking at him questioningly.

“Why?”

“Well, I guess that it’s because I was too timid to approach a girl I liked and women love confidence,” the Japanese man explained. “And it’s not like they teach you how to chat up women in school.”

The pair shared a comfortable moment of silence. Balalaika tapped some ash off her cigar into the glass ashtray to her right and returned her piercing gaze to her guest.

“If it was someone other than you, Rock, I wouldn’t believe that there’s someone in this place that’s looking for companionship and not just sex.”

“Thanks, I think,” the former Salaryman replied with a nervous shrug. He turned his attention to the slow burning stick of tobacco in his hand.

“You’re welcome,” the blonde smiled. “So, do you think you’ll ever find someone? In Roanapur, I mean?”

“No,” Rock answered. He drained his glass. “Of all the attractive women in Roanapur, I know three women in this place well enough to talk to properly. And if it wasn’t for work, they’d never talk to me.”

Pouring more vodka, Balalaika was beginning to get more of a handle on the gentleman from Japan. “So you don’t think you’re in the same league as these women? What makes you say that?”

“The fact that they all know that they intimidate me.”

“Are you still scared of Revy?” the blonde teased. Though he remained silent, the fact that Rock’s cheeks coloured was answer enough for the gangster.

Rock was tempted to respond with a personal question of his own, but thought better of it. ‘Who knows how she’d react? She could have me butchered and fed to dogs without batting an eyelid…’

“So, who are the other women you know well enough to talk to?” Balalaika asked, already having some idea as to the answer.

“Well, there’s Revy’s friend, Eda,” the Japanese man said, hoping for some interruption to the conversation.

The blonde leaned in to get a better look at her guest. “She’s the psycho nun from the Church of Violence, isn’t she?”

“Yeah.”

“Who’s the third? Sawyer the Cleaner? I hear she’s quite pretty when she scrubs up,” Balalaika mused.

“Who?” Rock asked, not recognising the name.

“Interesting,” the Russian smirked. “So who is the third person you find attractive that you talk to?”

“…” the white shirted man pulled at his collar. “… It’s you, Balalaika-san.”

“Me? You aren’t put off by my scars?”

“It’s more that I see them as proof of your strength of will,” Rock explained. “You’re all much stronger than I am. You yourself have a strength that I could never have.”

Balalaika sat back in her chair. “I see. Well, thank you for your company this evening. I have a feeling we’ll be doing business again soon.”

“Thank you for the drinks, Balalaika-san.”

When she was alone, the scarred woman pulled out her make-up mirror and looked at her facial scar. “‘Proof of my strength of will,’ eh? Feh!”

She cast her eyes to the empty glass on the far side of her desk. ‘If it was anyone else, I’d say they were bullshitting me.’

“Rock, you’re certainly a rarity here.”

It was another sweltering day in Roanapur, causing Revy to let out a stream of curses towards her friend sitting opposite her.

“Fucking hell, Eda, when are you going to get that bag of shit air conditioner working again? I’ve told you before about inviting me over when it’s this hot!”

“How do you think I feel? If this habit was waterproof, I’d be drowning in my own sweat!” the blonde countered, though she smiled at the way her friend was wilting. “At least the refrigerator’s working.”

Revy pulled out another can of beer and wiped her brow with it, revelling in the refreshing sensation. “So what was it you wanted to talk to me about?”

Eda shrugged. “I just wanted to share a few drinks with my friend.”

“You could have picked a place with air conditioning that worked,” the tattooed gunslinger grumbled. “I’m sweating my tits off in here.”

“Fine, fine, I’ll get to the point. What’s the deal with you and Rock? Have you two fucked yet?”

“No,” Revy answered, leaning back in her chair. “Why are you so interested in him? You finally decided to stop bullshitting people and drop the whole nun thing?”

“Maybe, maybe not,” the blonde teased.

The dark haired woman wasn’t surprised at that response and decided to play Eda at her own game. “It’s ok if you like him, but I should tell you he went to see Hotel Moscow late last night.”

“What?”

“Fry Face called him last night,” Revy answered truthfully. “I asked him about it when he got back and he said that she wanted to talk to him.”

“Fry Face? Why would he see her late at night?” Eda demanded.

“Something about getting to know him better,” Revy smirked, pulling out her cigarettes and lighting one up. As the blonde mulled this over, the dark haired gunslinger added, “I couldn’t smell anything on him when he got back, so I don’t think they fucked. She might have sucked him off though.”

“… Thanks for that mental image,” the nun replied sarcastically before she finished her drink. “So Fry Face likes Rock, eh?”

“Maybe, maybe not – I ain’t spoken with her about this and Rock wasn’t talking when I saw him. Maybe you’ve got a love rival,” the tattooed woman mocked.

“Love rival?”

“Yeah, it’s the only reason I can think of why you might be so interested in who Rock’s fucking. Either that or you’re one of those fucked-up nuns from those pornos and want to lick my asshole!”

“Fuck you, Revy. Fuck you.”

@@@@@

Revy announced her return home with a shout.

“What did Eda want?” Dutch asked, handing his co-worker a towel.

“She was asking about Rock,” the tattooed woman answered with a shrug before moving her matted hair out of her face. “I dunno why though.”

“That’s the second woman in two days to ask about our friend,” the black man commented.

“Yeah,” Revy nodded. She paused as she considered something before letting out a laugh.

“What’s so funny, Revy?”

“I was just trying to figure out why Rock’s suddenly so popular and the only thing I could come up with was that he’s been moonlighting as a gigolo,” she laughed.

Dutch couldn’t keep a straight face as tried to imagine the polite former Salaryman wining and dining the high class of ladies of Roanapur. “Could you imagine him escorting women on a night out on the town?”

“Where would they go? Yellow Flag?”

“Nah, Rock’s cultured – they’d go to the opera.”

“The closest thing to opera in this town is the soaps on the TV!” Revy laughed. “He’d probably try to get Fry Face to pull some strings and get the Russian ballet to perform or some shit like that.”

“Pull some shit like what?” Benny asked emerging from the bathroom, curious as to what all the laughter was about.

“We were just talking about why Rock seems so popular with the ladies, Benny,” Dutch explained.

“You know how Fry Face called him in last night?” Revy asked. She continued when the hacker nodded. “Well, Eda also asked about him. She got a bit pissed off when I said she had a love rival for Rock in Fry Face.”

“And ‘she doth protest too much’,” Benny nodded in understanding. “So why is Rock so popular all of a sudden?”

“That’s what we’re trying to work out, Benny-boy,” Dutch smiled. “The only thing we can think of is that he’s some sort of escort.”

“What?” the computer expert asked in disbelief.

Revy finished wiping her face and neck with the towel. “You know, like a gigolo.”

“You mean that Rock’s a manwhore?” Benny started laughing like a maniac. “That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all year!”

“Maybe we should get him a tux and start pimping him out when we need some extra cash?” the tattooed gunslinger suggested.

The two men threw their heads back and let out loud peals of laughter.

Benny fell to his knees when he heard Revy’s follow up comment.

“The name’s Hard. Rock Hard.”

“Please Revy, my sides,” the blonde begged.

Rock returned with a case of beer and a pizza for his co-workers.

“Ah, welcome back, Rock,” Revy greeted with a teasing look on her face.

“What’s up? Do we have a job or something?” the former Salaryman asked, setting the case of beer on the floor.

“No we don’t,” the tattooed gunslinger replied. “But there is some conjecture that you’re the one moonlighting, Rock.”

“Moonlighting? And just what would I be moonlighting as?”

“I don’t know, maybe it’s something to do with the fact that you’re doing visiting Fry Face late at night,” Revy teased.

Rock shook his head in disbelief. “Balalaika-san wanted to talk to me, that’s all.”

“Just talked, huh? What did you talk about?”

“That’s none of your business!”

“Was it romantic?” Revy asked, relishing in the embarrassment on Rock’s face.

“No, it wasn’t. Why? Are you jealous of Balalaika-san?” the Japanese asked, thinking he was turning the tables on his co-worker.

“No, but I think Eda might be…” the long-haired smoker hinted as she pulled out a cigarette and lit up. “She seemed interested in who you’re fucking.”

“You spoke with Eda-san?”

“Yeah, I did earlier. Why? You beginning to regret seducing Fry Face? Are you thinking you could have had Eda?”

Rock sighed and shook his head. “No. No I am not thinking that I could’ve been sleeping with Eda-san. Nor am I sleeping with Balalaika-san.”

“Oh,” Revy replied. She cast a glance at the pizza that had been brought home. “I hope you’re not expecting a tip.”

“What are you…? Oh, that,” the former Salaryman sighed when he realised that the gunslinger was teasing him. “I swear, there must be something in the water – you’re all obsessed with sex!”

“Maybe we just need a good, hard fucking, Rock,” the tattooed woman winked.

“This may come as a surprise to you, Revy, but I don’t go around trying to stick my dick into anything with tits and a heartbeat!”

“Of course, not everyone likes the Ladyboys.”

“That’s not what I meant, Revy, and you know it,” Rock sighed. “Look, it’s been a long, hot day and I’m tired. You want the truth? I haven’t fucked anyone on a couple of years. I want something more than ‘wham, bam, your money’s on the table’ or even ‘that was fun, now get the fuck out’.”

“You ain’t gonna get much more than that here, Rock,” Revy chuckled dismissively.

“I know that, Revy. I know that I’m not going to get married and raise a family – I realised that after I’d been in my old job for a couple of years. Fucking complete strangers every Saturday night isn’t going to make me feel any better, so why should I do that?”

Revy was taken aback by the former Salaryman’s candour. “I suppose you have a point there, Rock.”

“Yeah, now that we’ve got that settled, how about we have some pizza and beer?”

Balalaika sat at a restaurant table with Chan. She idly swirled the wine in her glass.

“You look troubled by something, Balalaika,” the Triad boss noted.

Before the blonde could reply that it wasn’t any of Chan’s business, a loud and obnoxious blonde American approached the table.

“Yo, Fry Face!”

Balalaika turned her head and cast an icy gaze at the interruption. “What do you want, Eda?”

Eda managed not to flinch. “Well, I wanted to know what’s going on between you and Rock.”

“Oh, have I missed something here?” Chan asked with a curious and slightly amused look on his face.

“Just that she called Rock over to her place last night for a chat,” the former CIA agent smirked. “Revy seemed kinda jealous.”

“And maybe Rock will be jealous when he finds out I had dinner with Chan here,” Balalaika scoffed. “Or maybe you’re just trying to scare me off your boyfriend?”

“I’m not interested in Chan in the slightest,” Eda countered.

“Ouch,” the Triad boss replied in mock hurt.

“But you didn’t say you’re not interested in Rock,” the Russian followed up, now ignoring her fellow diner. “Are you jealous that he’ll come to see me at the drop of a hat?”

“Pfft, no,” the American snorted.

“So if you’re not jealous that Rock will visit me, why are you here?” Balalaika asked. She sipped her wine before continuing. “Unless that’s not why you’re jealous – maybe you’re jealous that I’m not spending time with you?”

“Did you just call me a dyke, you fucker?” Eda growled.

“Roanapur is very accepting, Eda; so I’m sure that you’ll find someone who shares your tastes. Now, unless you have some business to discuss, I suggest you leave.”

“This isn’t over, Fry Face!”

@@@@@

Balalaika returned to her home, her mood having soured deeply thanks to Eda’s earlier disrespect.

“I cannot let this go unpunished,” she decided as she lit up a cigar.

Letting out a plume of smoke, the Russian considered her options. She knew that most of Roanapur would expect her to use force, as it was a most effective tool.

But her mind brought up the fact that she needed the Church of Violence.

“Yolanda would not be happy if I eliminated Eda. That said, I’m sure she realises just how that blonde bitch needs to be taught a lesson every now and then. What to do?”

The Russian cast her ice-blue eyes onto the document on her desk. “I’ll deal with that tomorrow, no sense in disturbing the Black Lagoon lot this late… Wait, perhaps Rock is the answer?”

Walking behind her desk, Balalaika pulled out a bottle of premium vodka and poured herself a generous drink. She sat down and dialled the number for the Black Lagoon office.

@@@@@

Revy was the closest to the ringing phone.

“Black Lagoon Company, what can we do you for?”

“¬Good evening, Revy, it’s Balalaika here. Is Rock there?¬”

“Yeah, hang on,” the gunslinger answered. She turned to call out for Rock. “Yo, Rock! You’ve got a client!”

“Client?” the former Salaryman asked as he approached the phone. “Can I help you?”

“¬Rock, it’s Balalaika here. I need your services.¬”

“What do you need translating, Balalaika-san?”

“¬Who said I needed something translated?¬”

“You don’t want me to translate something for you?” Rock blinked in surprise. “What is it you want me to do for you?”

Revy looked up and started to make thrusting gestures with her hips, interspersing them with an exaggerated spanking action.

“Revy!” Rock hissed. “I’m on the phone here!”

“¬Is Revy suggesting that we’re going to be fucking later?¬” Balalaika asked calmly.

“… Yeah, how did you know?”

“¬She’s not as mature as she thinks she is, Rock. And as much as it pains me, I’m going to have to stoop to her and Eda’s level. I want your help, Rock. Can you come to my office first thing in the morning?¬”

“Yeah, I’ll be there at 9,” Rock said before hanging up the phone.

“So, what you got planned for tomorrow?” Revy asked, grinning maliciously.

“I’m going to see Balalaika-san. I’ve got no idea what she’s got planned.”

At 9am on the dot, Rock entered Balalaika’s office and took the seat opposite her.

“Good morning, Rock. So, do you have any idea why I’ve brought you here this morning?” the blonde asked.

“None whatsoever,” the Japanese answered truthfully.

“You’re honest, Rock, that’s one of the things I like about you. First off, this is not to leave this room, is that understood?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Now, I have a problem and it’s not something my men can help me with.”

“If I can help you, I will, Balalaika-san,” Rock said, his hand slowly reaching for his cigarettes.

“Eda needs to learn some manners. She’s incredibly disrespectful and I need to do something about it,” Balalaika explained. “The problem is I can’t use my normal methods because of the Church.”

“I’m not sure what I can do to help you, Balalaika-san.”

“I’m not entirely sure either, Rock, but you’re used to coming up with non-violent solutions to problems. It may be that just taking Eda down a peg or two will be enough, but I don’t know how to do that without making her bleed.”

Rock took in a deep breath and closed his eyes. “It’s like being in high school again,” he muttered in Japanese.

“What was that, Japonski?” the blonde asked.

“Nothing, I’m just having flashbacks to my schooldays. You want to get revenge on Eda, but you can’t use force…” The former Salaryman sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “The first thing that comes to mind is to make her seem crazy.”

“That would be easier if there weren’t psychos, junkies and whores walking the streets,” Balalaika said, her ice-blue eyes showing a hint of a sense of humour.

“Yeah… So, maybe we could make her look like she’s crazy with jealousy or something?”

“That could work quite well,” the Russian mused. “In fact, I think you’ve given me an idea.”

“I have?” Rock asked, unsure if he liked the direction things were taking. He reached for cigarettes and cursed when he realised he was out.

“Here,” Balalaika said, holding out a cigar. “These are good. Now, how about we go out for lunch together?”

“It’s five past nine.”

“Ok, how about coffee?”

Rock couldn’t think of a reason not to go out with Balalaika for coffee and nodded in agreement. “Sure thing, Balalaika-san.”

“Excellent, we can get to know each other and I can teach you how to kill a man with a butter knife,” the Russian smiled. She picked up her phone and dialled Rock’s office. “I’ll just let your friends know that you’re busy.”

“Something up, Dutch?” Revy asked, noting the bemused look on her friend’s face as he hung up the phone.

“You know that Rock was visiting Balalaika?”

“Yeah, she called him last night.”

“Well, it seems that they’re going out for coffee and that he might be busy all day,” Dutch explained. His sharp mind went back to their discussion from the other day. “You don’t think that Rock’s…”

“Rock? No way! He’s too uptight about sex,” Revy said dismissively. “Besides, what would Balalaika see in him?”

“I have no idea, but it doesn’t matter. We don’t need Rock right now, so if he wants to have some coffee with a regular client, then it’s ok.”

“Pft, whatever.”

The bald man took a closer look at the woman. “You don’t sound convinced, Revy. You’re not jealous of Balalaika are you?”

“No, it’s just… I don’t know, something seems off with people wanting to spend time with Rock, that’s all.”

Dutch remained silent, though he thought he had an idea why Revy was out of sorts. ‘Denial isn’t a river in Egypt, Revy...’

Rock lifted the small cup coffee Balalaika had ordered for him and savoured its scent.

“Smells good, Balalaika-san,” he said. Deciding that it was too hot to drink at the moment, he placed it back down on the saucer.

“Best coffee in Roanapur,” the blonde replied as she took out a cigar and lit it. “Do you want one?”

“Err, yes please,” Rock smiled politely. “So, what did you want to talk about?”

The Russian looked around the café and saw that there were a number of people who clearly recognised who she was and made a show of turning their attention away from her table and going about their own business. “It’s simple really: I just wanted to get to know you better. I’ve found that you can tell a lot by a person’s taste in movies and music. So, what music and type of movies do you like?”

The former Salaryman rubbed his neck as he considered his answers. “I like the Rolling Stones and The Who.”

“Living in Roanapur, you might just die before you get old,” Balalaika smirked.

“Tell me about it,” Rock sighed.

“What about movies? You’re a cultured fellow, what’s your favourite movie?”

“I’ve always had a place in my heart for the Marx Brothers.”

“Even the unfunny one, Karl?” the blonde teased. She watched the look of confusion on Rock’s face turn into a smile. “What, aren’t I allowed to make jokes?”

Rock put his hands up in a placating manner as he backpedalled to dig himself out of the hole. “Oh no, it’s just that... well, you’re always so serious. It’s... it’s a side we don’t see very often. I like it.”

“I’m glad you do, Rock. You know, the more time I spend with you, the more I can see why Revy’s changed.”

“I... thank you?”

“Yes, Revy used to be nothing more than a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, gun-toting brute. She’s still all of these things, but now she’s not so in your face, if you know what I mean,” Balalaika said as she tapped the ash off her cigar. She looked up at Rock and saw the look on his face. “Perhaps you’re too close to her to see the difference in her.”

Rock shrugged before turning his attention back to his coffee.

A waiter arrived at the table. “Are you ready to order, Madam?”

“Yes, I’ll have the breakfast special.”

“Excellent choice, Madam. And you, sir?”

“The same please,” the Japanese man smiled politely as the waiter wrote the order down on his pad.

Dutch could see that Revy was clearly agitated by something. He knew that his colleague wasn’t going to tell him the gory details, and quite frankly, he wasn’t sure that he wanted to know.

But the woman was going to wear out the carpet if she kept up her pacing!

“Revy,” the black man said.

“What?”

“Something’s bothering you and you have two options. One, you talk about or two, you go and deal with it yourself. If you want to talk about it, I’m here. If you don’t, stop pacing, I’ve got work to do,” Dutch said, gesturing to the pile of papers on his desk.

“Since when did this turn into an office job?” Revy asked, knowing full well that recordkeeping wasn’t Dutch’s strong point. It didn’t seem to be anyone’s strong point. Well, except for Rock, that is.

“Revy, quit stalling and do something about what’s bothering you.”

“Fine, I’ll go out into town. Are you happy now?”

“Yes.”
