Finally.

Chapter Four is finally complete. Many of you from the last thread know what transpired to cause this coming out so late, and what was more frustrating was that the outline was done and I was just beginning to write it when my comp went down.

Part of the beginning was lost, due to it not being moved in time as my old C Drive is now shot, but most of the back ups were on F & G, so I came out of it better than I hoped.

Like I mentioned in the other thread I am a bit concerned considering it was over 9 months before I was able to write again, and some of what I wanted to write (some ideas) was not yet entered in the outline when the comp went down, so this chapter did turn out a little bit different from what little I can recall from back then.

This chapter is something I wanted to do in giving a bit more background, before we got into the fun, though the way some of it kept ballooning in size you'd think I was taking lessons from Kubo himself. :p

Please by all means, C&C is welcomed. For those who notice spelling and grammer errors, please point them out so I can fix them.

Thanks to all of you who are still reading. I hope you enjoy!

Blessings In Disguise

Book I: Be Careful What You Wish For

Chapter 4

-You Can Pick And Choose Your Friends...-

It had been a wonderful day, Orihime Inoue had thought as she stretched her back. The sun was still out and a soft breeze was brushing against her skin, cooling some of the summer heat that had been present.

To her left was Ichigo Kurosaki, who was walking her to his home as she was to stay the night with his family. She lifted and tilted her head, allowing some of the breeze to catch and cool her neck and spied a look at him.

Family...

For as long as she could remember, family had meant only her and Sora Inoue, her brother. She knew that she had parents, but she hadn't seen them that often, and what little she had remembered in that time with her brother had always seemed to unnerved her. Her brother in that time had doubled as her mother and father, raising her on his own, working to keep them clothed and fed as well as being there for her when she needed him. However though what they had between them was special she had known on some level what they had wasn't the norm per se, yet she would not have traded it for anything.

And then fate had come along one day to cruelly turn her world upside down.

She continued to look at Ichigo. He continued to walk on, keeping his head straight forward, his arms around the straps to her pack and doing his best to give the impression that nothing was amiss, and that the weight of her pack was no problem.

The pack, yes... Boy, was that heavy. Just thinking about it really made her appreciate that she was able to get some help from some of the underclassmen who had been walking by. They seemed so eager to help out when she - Orihime quickly shook her head, bringing her back to the present. She turned to Ichigo and again thought about the new man in her life- No, the new family in her life.

She smiled.

It had been different in her time living with the Kurosaki's than it had been with her brother, but she could not help but notice that the bonds that had kept her and Sora close had existed on an even stronger level within the family. Every time they laughed, the time they spent together, even the times of scuffling between siblings she could not help but compare her life with Sora with her time with the Kurosaki's.

Even now the thought made her feel guilty, wondering what things would have been like had things turned out differently. Would her family have been similar? Such thoughts died quickly, as she found herself remembering meeting her parents. She then hummed to herself, focusing her thoughts on the man she was with.

"Inoue", he said.

Something in her briefly twisted. 'He did it again'. She stopped walking and looked downward. 'What did I do? Is he upset at something'? She saw his feet come into view and she realized that he was now just in front of her. She raised her head and frowned.

"Did I do something wrong, Ichigo-kun"?

His brows furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"This is the fourth time you've called me 'Inoue', today."

She saw him retreat in thought before he turned away and began walking. Her stomach clenched that maybe she did forget something important. She knew that she could be ditzy at times but she did make sure she remembered the important stuff, like his birthday which was still a few weeks away. He then he prodded. "And that's strange because...?"

She blinked in surprise. "You haven't called me that since the first time we met. Is something wrong?"

He again had that bewildered look on his face as he studied her. She began to feel her cheeks heat up as she saw his concentration intensify, becoming all at once self-conscience. 'Is there something on me? She looked downward to double check her wardrobe. Finding nothing out of the ordinary she looked up and caught Ichigo staring at her with a rather stunned expression. She blushed and was about question his expression when she was cut off.

"Ichigo."

"Yo pops. What's up?"

Ichigo's father stood before them with an expression she had never seen him wear.

'He looks angry', she thought in realization.

"Something wrong, dad?", Ichigo asked.

"We need to talk. Now."

She gulped before Isshin turned towards her and gave her a fond smile. "It's nice to see you could make it Orihime-chan. Yuzu and the girls are inside." She turned to Ichigo and saw that Ichigo continued to stare at his father before she blinked and bowed to Isshin.

"Thank you for having me, father." She rose and walked past the two Kurosaki males and into the shrine. She looked over her shoulder to see both of them continue their staring contest as she continued on, wondering exactly what was going on.

"Orihime-neesama!"

Orihime turned and smiled, greeting the youngest daughter of the Kurosaki's. "Yuzu-chan!" Momentarily forgetting what was happening outside the gate, Yuzu grabbed both her hands in hers and gently pulled her along towards the shrine.

She found herself smiling as Yuzu began to tell her of everything little Keiichi had done since he had been brought home. When they finally reached the shrine they saw Karin standing in the genkan holding the door open for them.

"Hey Orihime-nee", greeted Karin with a wave. Before Orihime could return the greeting another figure walked up behind Karin.

"Welcome, Orihime-chan", greeted Belldandy.

Orihime smiled and bowed. "I apologize for the intrusion".

"Nonsense", Belldandy replied and gestured for her to come inside. Orihime walked up and before she could remove her shoes found herself caught up in a hug from the older woman. Closing her eyes she returned the hug, enjoying the warmth the other woman gave.

'So different', her thoughts from earlier resurfaced. 'So different from what I had before'.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing had mattered anymore.

The world. People. Life.

Her brother. Her sole companion for as long as she could remember was dead.

And their last words to each other had been one of anger, over something as stupid as a gift of hairpins that he had wanted to give her.

The bullying she had received had reached a tempest a few weeks ago. Not only had she been beaten, but the girls who had ambushed her had cut her long hair out of jealousy and spite. She had been fast becoming the object of attention from much of the boys in her school, and many of the girls who had felt slighted about what they perceived as her showing off had been part of the beating.

Sora, her brother, had often complimented her hair and how much of a beautiful young woman she was becoming, and she had taken them to heart. Once the bullying started, those compliments had turned into a source of fear, knowing that the more she received the more they would harm her. The hairpins were meant to enhance her looks, she knew, but all she could think about was the pain that would be in store for her. In fear she had rejected them, and in turn had what would be the first and last fight with her brother, for he would be killed in a hit and run accident the next day.

She barely remembered what happened after she had been informed, and the police had escorted her to the clinic in which her brother had been rushed to. She had not seen the body, and had not moved from her seat as the doctor had tried to give her some details, but she had not heard them.

She didn't know how much time had passed since the doctor had left her in the room. Minutes. Hours. It was all the same. It wasn't until she felt hands on her shoulders that she found herself brought back to reality.

"Hello Orihime". The woman who knelt in front of her held a calm and reassuring gaze. Her gaze had been reassuring for a moment, before she remembered she was alone again. The woman's face fell slightly, but again tried to speak to her. "I am so sorry for your loss. I promise you that we will do everything we can in this time to help you."

After a moment she was left alone again. When the woman returned, she had introduced herself as the doctor's wife, Belldandy. Having learned that she was alone, Belldandy had talked to the authorities to allow her to watch over Orihime until proper arrangements could be made.

Wordlessly, aimlessly, she was led to a car and taken to her temporary residence, the Kurosaki home. When they had reached the entrance she had called out to someone. After a moment a boy her age walked through, and she had introduced them.

The following days had gone by in a flurry of activity, from her temporary settlement at the Kurosaki's to the cremation ceremony for her brother. At the end of the week Orihime got word that she never realized could happen.

She had been found by her parents.

Sora had nothing good to say about them whenever the subject came up, and more often than not those conversations had ended with him telling her that she's better off not knowing. With those thoughts in mind the sheer anticipation had her stomach in knots.

The boy, Ichigo, had been with her. After learning of her circumstances he had been very cautious but at the same time very curious about her. He had been friendly and had tried to to get her to open up to her. Talks between them had been brief, as she herself could not bring herself to open up yet. His younger sisters had also been inquisitive, with the one she learned was named Yuzu had done her best to make her smile.

Though she hadn't spoken much, she had been watching. At first watching the siblings interact had been too much, reminding her of the happy times with her brother, but after a few days she couldn't help but feel rather captivated by the entire family. There existed here a fullness that she had not known had been lacking.

To see how their parents acted around them, to see them play with their children, to see those children be so carefree, to the emotions that built when she had been invited to partake in it; she had wondered if maybe perhaps Sora was wrong.

It would be a few days more before she would meet her parents, Hikaru and Kozue Inoue. Her aunt, Risa Inoue, when learning about Hikaru and Kozue reclaiming Orihime had insisted that she would also be joining them at the Kurosaki home.

The first sign that there might be a problem had been during Hikaru and Kozue's arrival. While they both were dressed decently Hikaru had reeked of cigarettes and made no attempt to disguise his "admiration" towards Belldandy.

The second sign that there might be a problem were the people who were not present. Isshin had been called to the clinic earlier and was not present to greet them, while Risa Inoue would be arriving late, being stuck in traffic.

The third sign that there might be a problem had been Ichigo, who had been acting restless upon the arrival of Orihime's parents and witnessing Hikaru's open flirtation on his mother. He had been watching both parents like a hawk while keeping himself between them and his sisters.

About thirty minutes after Hikaru and Kozue's arrival Murphy decided to make his presence felt.

Risa had finally managed to call the Kurosaki household to inform the others that she would be arriving momentarily. Belldandy had taken the children to greet her, leaving Orihime alone with her parents for the first time in 9 years.

Orihime had continued to look at them, many times in the last half hour trying to match whatever memories she could bring up to the people before her. Not finding much other than what little description Sora had given she decided to ask the question that had been knawing at her for several days.

"F-father?"

"Haah...?", he responded, somewhat disinterestedly, returning his gaze back towards his wayward daughter now that it seemed that that hottie wouldn't be back anytime soon.

"Ho-how...umm....", she paused, as if trying trying to phrase the question correctly. Kozue, who had been busying herself by taking in everything in the room after their hostess had left also turned to her, waiting.

"Do...do you think things would have been better, if we had stayed together?"

Her mother frowned and turned thoughtful of the question while her father snorted and crossed his arms.

"I don't know, but your brother probably would have still run away, little shit that he was. I'm still amazed that he took you with him."

Orihime stared, trying to believe what she just heard.

"That he'd be able to support both you and him, how the hell did he get the money for it?", he grumbled.

"Oh, you remember how he used t' be", Kozue responded. "Remember how he hid his money whenever he had any instead of giving it to us? He must've found a better hiding place after we found that last stash."

Hikaru grunted in affirmation.

"And would you getta look at this place", Kozue continued, happy to express this thought after they had arrived. "You'd think that these people were loaded, but they ain't got nothin' worth anything."

Orihime blinked as her mother then popped a stick of gum into her mouth and began to chew. "I mean," Kozue began inbetween chews, "This chick lives in a freakin' temple. And they ain't got nothin! Don't make no sense."

"Either that or her old man is givin' it to her pretty good if she ain't complainin'", Hikaru laughed.

Orihime couldn't believe what she had been hearing. To hear her brother bad mouthed and now hearing them talk about the people who had taken them in was beginning to overwhelm her.

"Oh", her father said, looking at her, "We don't have a lot of room in the car, so when we go we can only take a few things. Grab whacha need now, we'll send out for the rest later".

Orihime nodded, sniffling. "I-I'll go get Oniisan's urn and then-"

"Hey", her father interrupted. "I said 'your' things. You don't need that."

"But, we were supposed to take it together to the family-"

"I said leave it.", her father demanded, beginning to get irritated.

The tears that had been threatening to fall finally came.

"Stop that."

"But, but..", her hands came up to her face as she rubbed her nose and sniffled.

"I said stop it!", he hissed at her. When she didn't he finally stood up and reached forward to grab her wrist.

She cried out in pain as she was pulled forward and fearfully looked up at her father's angry visage. "Orihime I told you to-"

He never finished, as at that moment an orange topped blur barreled into him, causing him to fall awkwardly back into his seat and into Kozue.

He quickly got his bearings and stood up and found the woman's brat in between him and his daughter, who was now on her knees clutching her arm.

"How could you do that!?", the boy hissed at him, fists clenched. "How could you do that to her? She's your daughter, right!?"

"Out of the way boy."

"No", Ichigo responded, now slipping into a stance.

"Move, boy".

"Make me."

Orihime, who had been nursing her aching arm while tears had continued to fall looked up in surprise, shocked at being saved and now watching her savior standing up to her father seemingly without fear.

Kozue had been watching from her seat wide eyed, still trying to comprehend what had just happened.

"Brat", Hikaru threatened, "Get out of my way or so help me I'll-"

"-do what?", another voice interrupted.

Hikaru turned from the boy to the owner of the voice, who was accompanied by his now horrified sister.

Belldandy stood a several feet away from him, arms to her side. Yuzu and Karin were behind her, Yuzu clutching at her mother's dress and Karin standing just off to the side, glaring at Hikaru.

Hikaru found the woman's hard gaze boring into him and felt something in his stomach shift. "Well?", she prodded, "What is it you were going to do to my son"? Though her tone had been even, he could feel the weight of her words behind them and found himself breaking eye contact with her. "For that matter", she then continued, "what were you doing to Orihime-chan?"

Ichigo, who had never moved from his position or stance answered. "She was crying and her told her to stop and when she didn't he grabbed at her." His eyes never waivered as he met Hikaru's glare with his own.

"Ichigo", Belldandy began, "Take Orihime and your sisters to their room".

Ichigo nodded and turned to help Orihime up. She clutched at his arm as he began to lead her away, turning his head to keep watch.

"There's no need for that, we're leaving", Hikaru stated. "Orihime-"

"She will not being going with you", Belldandy stated.

Hikaru's eyes narrowed and he took a step forward. "She's my daughter and we're going to-"

"You will NOT be taking her".

Ichigo had turned the moment he saw Hikaru take that first step, but found himself momentarily stopped as Orihime continued to clutch at his arm, her eyes on her father.

"If you have any problems with what I have just said", Belldandy continued, noting Hikaru's clenched jaw, "you may take them up with my husband. He will be returning soon".

A myriad of negative emotions played across Hikaru's reddened voice. Looking between each of the adults and the brats he came to a decision as he contemplated the final member yet to arrive.

"Kozue! Get up! We're leaving!" Kozue nodded and got up as her husband grabbed her hand and pulled her along. He paused long enough to glare at his sister before turning it to Belldandy. He finally turned to his daughter, who was cowering behind the boy. Holding her gaze for a few seconds he snorted and pulled at his wife, storming out of the Kurosaki home.

"Hikaru-niisan!", Risa cried, following after. Before she got to the door, she turned back to the rest and bowed, "Please excuse me for a moment". She then turned back to where her brother and sister-in-law left and ran after them.

As the footsteps retreated and it became apparent that they were alone, Belldandy turned and her expression turned somber as she saw Orihime begin to cry. Ichigo had began to shuffle, his defiant anger now replaced with uncertainty as the girl he had befriended and now defended had not let go of his arm.

He looked at his mother, unsure of what to do. Reading the look on his face, Belldandy approached them and kneeled to their level. Both Karin and Yuzu hesitantly approached the still crying girl before stopping, waiting for what their mother would do next.

Gently reaching out she brushed a few strands of hair out of Orihime's face, causing Orihime to gasp at the unexpected touch. "I am so sorry, Orihime-chan", Belldandy told her, her own expression somber. Orihime hesitantly moved away from Ichigo as she turned her attention to the older woman. Belldandy's mood alleviated only slightly as she noted Orihime had yet to let go of Ichigo's hand.

Placing a hand on the young girl's shoulder, Belldandy brought Orihime closer and pulled her into a hug. Orihime gasped again as she felt the woman's encircle her to hold. "I am so sorry", she repeated. Loosening her hold she looked Orihime in the eyes. "I want you to know Orihime", she started, holding Orihime's gaze. "That no matter what happens, I promise you, you will never be alone".

Orihime blinked as she took in Belldandy's words. A few moments ago she had seen her world crushed again with the words of her brother now verified. Now as she gazed at this woman she found herself playing the woman's words in her mind over and over. She turned and saw Yuzu and Karin, both who smiled at her, with Yuzu giving a small wave. Finally she she turned her head to see Ichigo, who was still standing in the spot she had left him in.

As she looked at Ichigo all she could see was his back as he stood between her and her father with no fear in his stance or words. Without a thought for himself or the consequences he stood steadfast as her father had threatened and had not flinched. Seeing him stare at her she contemplated the boy she had only met not two weeks prior. He finally smiled and nodded curtly at her, as if giving her his approval.

Blinking, she finally turned back to their mother, who was smiling at her. Sniffling once more, she smiled as she buried her face into the woman's chest, holding on as she cried once more, this time knowing that things would be changing for the better.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Orihime pulled away from the hug and smiled. "Thank you so much for having me", she said.

"Your more than welcome anytime Orihime-chan", Belldandy replied. "Is Ichigo with you?

"I think he's still outside with father", Orihime said before turning around to see both Karin and Yuzu waiting for her.

"Oh! Yuzu! I have some new recipes that I wanted to go over with you!", she exclaimed. Karin gulped as Yuzu began to talk to Orihime on what kind of ingredients they would be needing. 'Oh gods I hope it isn't anything like the butter salted pickles she had last time', Karin thought.

Before they could continue on they turned at the sudden commotion of voices outside. They each turned but saw Belldandy at the door looking on but blocking most of the view.

"I didn't hurt them that bad!", they could hear Ichigo say, and become quiet. There was something in the way he spoke that they could tell that was different from the usual kind of fights he had with their father. "And besides, even if I did they deserved it!"

"Ichigo!"

All three of the girls looked at each other, wide eyed. Karin then turned to Yuzu who turned still, her eyes now at the door. Rarely did their father take that tone. Yuzu began to walk to the door before being stopped as their mother opened her palm as a signal for her to stop. "Niisama", she whispered.

Orihime though felt her stomach twist. In the two years that she had known the Kurokaki's she had never seen anything like what was happening now. From what she could hear she understood it had to do with what happened earlier. Both Ichigo and Tatsuki had come back to class though Ichigo had some scrapes on him, but that in itself had not been anything out of the ordinary.

Silently they watched as their mother had walked out to the two men. From the look on Isshin's face he had not noticed her approach. After a moment he picked up the backpack that Ichigo had been carrying for Orihime earlier and made his way toward them. Slipping off his shoes in the genkan he slid the door shut behind them, cutting off what they could see of Belldandy and Ichigo.

Isshin saw the three girls before him and sighed before ushering them into the family room. Taking a seat he looked at Orihime. She and both the girls were tense and kept looking towards the door.

"Orihime", he said, catching her attention. "Do you know what happened earlier today? With Ichigo?"

Both Yuzu and Karin turned towards her, eager to hear anything to explain what was happening with their older brother.

To their disappointment she shook her head. "No. After lunch Ichigo-kun and Tatsuki were a little late in getting back, and he had looked like he had been in a fight. But he didn't say anything about it, and Tatsuki didn't say anything either so I didn't really think anything of it."

Isshin crossed his arms and sighed. Before he could ask anything else they heard the front door open and both Yuzu and Karin jumped from their seats and ran to the door, Orihime and Isshin following shortly after.

"Ichi-nii!"

"Oniisama!"

They both stopped as they saw their mother alone at the genkan. Sliding the door shut behind her she held her head down for a moment as she drew a breath. Something in that expression tore at Orihime's heart as she finally looked up.

"Bell", Isshin began, "Where's Ichigo"?

"He'll be back. He...he just needs to think about what happened".

Before Isshin could reply she looked at Yuzu. "Yuzu, let's finish preparing dinner now".

Orihime could only watch as Bell ushered Yuzu into the kitchin. Both Isshin and Karin followed, asking her what had happened. Orihime turned towards the front door, hoping that Ichigo would come back.

And through it all one thought kept persisting itself. That through all this she couldn't help but be reminded about Sora, that they had fought a day before he died. She had never argued with him in all the time they were together until that day, and on some level understood that whatever happened outside, Ichigo had never argued with his parents like that either.

"Ichigo-kun", she whispered, and prayed with all her might that tragedy would not find a way to strike again.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

'Why did I say that?! Why did I say that!', Ichigo thought for the hundredth time. After realizing what he had said he had instantly regretted it. The look on his psud- 'no, she *is* mom - dammit! Dammit!' The anguish on her face as he uttered those words wrenched at his heart even now.

He had to get away. He had to think. He had to force that image out of his head.

-Coward-, his subconscious taunted.

Shoving that thought aside, he continued to run. As he came closer to the town he slowed to a walk, not bothering to check which direction he was heading. His thoughts and emotions jumbled, his concentration was only focused enough to barely avoid other pedestrians and that horn blaring. Wait-

He blinked as the present viciously forced it's way back into focus as he realized he was in the middle of the street. With oncoming traffic in his vision he dashed to the sidewalk, grabbing the signal light pole to help him stop. Still holding the pole, he began to catch his breath and tried to calm his racing heart. When he was satisfied that he was back to his normal heart rate he raised his head to get his bearings.

Ignoring the stares and snickers from the bystanders who had been witness to his near accident he continued to look around. With a start he recognized exactly where he was at and removed his hand from the pole. 'Is it still here?', he thought and ran, very much keeping an eye on traffic this time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The preparations for dinner had nearly been completed, however no one in the house would admit to being hungry at that moment.

Both Isshin and Belldandy had spoken quietly, and the girls had tried to occupy themselves with what they could do to help in the kitchen. The business and light-heartedness that had been the norm was missing this evening, as each was trying to understand what had happened earlier.

It was at that time they heard a knock at the door. Scrambling for the front door, Karin could see the shadow of a figure through the shoji screens and scrunched her face. Grabbing the door she forcibly slid the door open, causing the door to hit the end with a loud crack.

"ICHI-NII! WHERE HAVE YOouuu...", she trailed off, as she got a look at the two who had jumped back at the force she had come through with. Face reddening she brought her head down and clenched her teeth for a few seconds before looking up and brushing her ponytail back behind her. She could hear the others behind her.

They looked familiar, well, one of them looked familiar, as the other one had most of his face bandaged up. 'Waittasec', she thought. 'Wasn't this the guy who came over with Ichi-nii to see Keiichi?' She bowed to them and apologized for her 'greeting'. Looking at the bandaged one up and down, she squinted at him trying to place a face when she realized that this was other guy who came with Ichi-nii to the hospital.

"What happened to you?"

"Karin!", she heard her mother.

"Um, uh, sorry, but uh, if your here to see Ichi-nii he's not here right now so uh..."

"He's not?", the shorter of the two, Mizuiro asked.

"I'm sorry", Belldandy offered. "But he isn't".

"Oh", Keigo said, face lowering slightly. "Do you know when he'll be back?"

"I'm sorry", Isshin replied, stepping forward. "But we don't know exactly when he'll be back. I also have to apologize but now isn't the best of times."

Both boys eyes widened before they both bowed. "We're sorry for the intrusion", Mizuiro offered, "but Keigo here wanted to thank Ichigo for what happened earlier today".

Isshin's eyes lit up at those words. "For what happened earlier", he repeated, looking at Keigo with interest now, studying the bandages and remembering what Ichigo had said during their argument earlier.

The boys both nodded.

Isshin the slid the door open fully. "Please", he gestured to the inside of their home, "come in".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

With no small bit of hesitation Ichigo turned the final corner and took a few steps before pausing. Taking a breath he turned his eyes forward and looked in the direction of his home. His old home.

No fanfare awaited him. No shout from Karin from one of the windows. No Yuzu to greet him. No father hiding from some corner to ambush him in some sort of screwed up training.

He swallowed as he tried to ignore the hollow feeling in his stomach.

The only thing familiar that greeted him was the smell. The smell of food being cooked, though far stronger than it had ever been. He smirked at the easy reason for that now. A combination home/clinic was easily able to absorb near any scent of food however this combination helped enhance it.

"Irrashaimase!", he was greeted as he went through the entrance. Acknowledging the greeting with a nod he took a few steps onward before stopping and took in the view.

"Have a seat, son, and I'll take your order in a minute!", the cook called out as he set a few bowls of ramen down to hungry customers.

"It's ok, just looking around", he replied as he again took in his surroundings. The place had been completely revamped. 'Or was it always liked this', he thought to himself. Nothing familiar remained of his old home.

Sighing, he turned and began to make his way out before being stopped by the greeter. "Please take this", she said, holding out a piece of paper. Taking the menu he pocketed it and thanked her as he walked out.

He stopped a few feet away from the entrance and looked upwards. A chill went down his back and he sighed. Rubbing the back of his neck he rolled his shoulders as he again began to move forward. The distraction of seeing his old home - now a ramen shop momentarily set aside much bigger problems.

'What the hell am I going to do?' He winced as his mother's face came to the forefront again. The words he said just before also joined in. 'I'm not your son!', he had shouted. 'Damn it all'. He again felt a chill as he again contemplated the last few days.

This woman, now his mother, Belldandy, he found was an extraordinarily kind woman. So much so that he knew without a doubt that even if he hadn't screwed up with his wish, changing his life and hers, that this was someone he could have trusted, confided in and cared for. There was just something about her that with a look could simply put him at ease in a way no other person could, save Masaki, his real mother. And even then Belldandy had a way of making it seem easier.

He shivered again, the implications of what he did again coming to focus. The bits and pieces that had come to him from the life that he had only reinforced those feelings for her. He had vowed to never forget his mother, Masaki, but holding off his emotions towards Belldandy had been near impossible. He recalled what she had said a few days earlier when they brought Keiichi home. She did mention that the confusion he was experiencing would fade in time as he readjusted. 'But what does that mean exactly?', he thought.

He held out his palms and looked at them before stretching them forward, fingers linked and cracked his knuckles. 'I don't really think I'm that different'. When he had first contemplated it that first night back home he had freaked out a bit when he realized that in a sense he had in a way replaced someone. 'But it's still me, isn't it?', he questioned himself again. He rubbed his head again as another thought came to fore. 'I don't feel too different. Outside of what I feel for her I still am who I am. These feelings that I get from just looking at her, they're not fake. Does readjusting mean that I become like he was, knowing what he knew? I know that if I concentrate I can pull some of what has happened before, but only if I attempt to search, but even then I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. Or like what happened earlier. I can't believe I knew Orihime, I mean, he knew Ino- no - damn it all!'

And there had been those times too. The flashes that had come from simply interacting with something or someone. His sisters. Inoue. His mother. He had an easier time with those flashes as they gave him a frame of reference to work with when trying to recall other things. He then grimaced as he recalled one particular change he could've done without. 'Shi-ichi... god what an embarrassing nick name... I can't believe Tatsuki came up with that from that old backpack...'

Tatsuki...

His initial assessment about her and remembering their time together proved correct after being around her earlier. She was pretty much the same girl that he knew before; tomboyish and strong. Upon seeing her he recalled how his competition with her had ignited his youthful pride as well as hers. He both groaned and chuckled at how Tatsuki had managed to get the upperhand on him this time around. Ever smiling and ever ready for a good throw down, be it with him or anyone else stupid enough to try something to her...or him, he grimaced.

He felt his male pride prickle a bit as he began to realize just how much Tatsuki seemed to look out for him, at times having his back more than once whenever he got in over his head. Not that that was a bad thing, she had more than once helped him out in the life he once had but it was different than it was before. He recalled that he still was picked on and threatened by pretty much the same idiots for his hair color amongst other things but she was now more involved in those fights than previously. Helping him... watching him. And like before, they had sent more than their fair share packing.

His spirits slightly lifted as he felt his pride swell in that those same idiots he had sent on their merry way mostly alone back then without much or any help at all. He frowned though as he recalled the fight earlier, something had been a bit different. No stranger being in brawls before, he realized that this time around he had found it easier to move his body and without realizing until later moving fluidly from stance to stance. While he had studied fighting and had his 'lessons' from his father he found himself at times too busy just trying to push through these punks instead of going through proper kata patterns and movements. This time he had surprised himself and barely found himself tired. He clenched his fists, knowing it had been due to the extra training he had here.

He blinked as something tickled the back of his mind. There had been that one incident with Kanegawa getting a cheap shot in. If it hadn't been for the new guy, he didn't know what shape he'd be in at this point. 'Waitasec...'

With a start he realized that that event had pretty much played out exactly as it did before, and after a brief moment of concentration concluded that indeed there were no differences. "Hmmmm...".

Coming to a stop he found himself at Yumizawa Children's Park. Everything here seemed to be in place, and after finding a bench he sat and steepled his hands together and rested his chin on them, leaning forward so his elbows rested on his knees. He sighed as he again reviewed the crux of his current problem.

"Higher, mommy! Higher!", a child cried out. Turning toward the voice he watched a young boy on the swings with presumably his mother behind him, pushing him forward as he came back in her direction.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Watch, Mama! I know I can go higher!" Ichigo cried, kicking hard at the height of his backward swing, attempting to gain acceleration to go higher than his last flight up.

'Just a bit more, then I try that cherry bomb trick Hijiri told me about!'. The cherry bomb trick was to get as high as you could on your forward swing, and at the highest point attempt to throw yourself backward. Holding the chains the trick was as you go straight down the seat would catch you before you hit the ground, making a large sound as the chains straightened out. The perfect cool move for an 8 year old to make!

'Mom will really be surprised at this!', he thought gleefully. Fully intent on impressing his mother (as well as quite a few onlookers) he kept building up speed, and calculating at what point he should act on his trick.

'NOW!", he thought, tightening his body and then immediately straightening out, changing the swings direction and momentum. But just as he was moving back he forgot to swing his legs back, getting the seat back under him in time and went crashing back-first into the sandy ground, the impact harder as the back of his knees hooked the seat, causing him to bounce slightly has the chains tightened, pulling the seat back a bit.

"ICHIGO!", he had hazily heard his mother cry. His eyes and chest stung as the air was forced out of him, and his legs hurt from being caught on the seat of the swing. Feeling someone remove his legs from the swing he was brought to a sitting position and felt himself being steadied as a hand firmly rubbed his back.

He coughed hard several times as air forced itself back in his lungs and squeezed his eyes shut, allowing a few tears to fall. After a moment he turned to his mother, who was cradling him in her arms. All of a sudden embarrassed by all the people staring at him, he attempted to stand to quickly dust himself off.

He barely made it to his knees when his mother grabbed him and fiercely held onto him. "Ichigo, please don't do anything like that again. You could have been seriously hurt", she had said as she held him. He looked up into her face and saw that she had teared up herself. Feeling extremely guilty he lowered his head to her chest and apologized. She held him ever tighter at that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

He blinked at that memory, now knowing that had been the last time he had done something to cause his mother pain. She had been extremely worried for him and she held onto him fiercely for a good time before they left.

'She really did have a good grip on me, then. The last time she did that was...'

He frowned.

'Was...'

He concentrated.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was raining, he could recall.

He had hurt, and knew that he had been hit with something hard. He tried to move, but realized he couldn't. The rain was still falling, but he found that he was dry. He could feel that he was under something, no, under someone. 'Mom', he realized with a start.

Before realized it he was suddenly in her arms. Wearily he opened his eyes and tried to focus on the face of his mother. "Mommy"?, he had questioned and found himself caught in a hug harder than he could ever recall.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

'That night at the riverbed....', he thought. 'Mom died that night', he had remembered. 'But something else happened here'. For a brief second his memories of Masaki appeared to him of that night. The blood...

'NO'!

Forcing himself to shove that thought aside he stood up and looked at the direction of where that was on the riverbed. Something else had happened there, but nothing was coming up. 'Might as well check it out', he thought as he stood up and took off.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Isshin studied Keigo's bruised face. Both boys were now seated in the family room, with the girls spread out around them. At Isshin's request Keigo had removed the bandages that were wrapped around his face and had held in a breath as he took in the bruises. He shortly after had pulled out a stool to sit in front of Keigo. "And you say you have bruises on your torso as well?" he asked. Keigo nodded and winced, holding in a yelp as Isshin lightly touched one.

"They hurt, but they do look a lot worse than it is", he winced again. "If not for Kurosaki-san...", he trailed off. Karin was next to her father, studying the boy's face like he was a work of art at a museum. Getting up Isshin left to find some cream and fresh bandages for the boy.

"So your saying that Oniisama saved you?", queried Yuzu, who was also staring at the boy hopefully. Keigo nodded, a little bit embarrassed to talk about it now.

"The way those other guys were chasing him, if he hadn't saved him I don't think Keigo would walking around right now", Mizuiro supplied.

"Didja you hear that mom, pop?! Then that means Ichi-nii didn't do anything wrong!", exclaimed Karin.

Isshin sighed as he sat back down in front of Keigo. "Be that as it may, that still doesn't excuse Ichigo for taking it as far as he did".

"I know it may seem a bit mean to say, Kurosaki-san, but that gang finally got everything they got coming to them", Mizuiro added. They've never been known to hold back on anyone. I know that Hayashibara had threatened Keigo awhile back but from what I know Keigo listened to what he said."

Keigo nodded. "He was kinda pissed that I had been hitting on his girl", he filled in for the rest. "I listened to him completely when he threatened me, but today the teacher had put us in the same group. When he found out..well...", he gestured to himself.

"You mean he still went after you even though it was because of the teacher?", Orihime asked.

Keigo nodded again, blushing now as he really became self-conscious of himself. 'To be in this condition being watched by both Orihime Inoue and Belldandy Kurosaki', he internally lamented, clenching a fist and holding a small river of tears in.

Belldandy noticed his expression and fortunately for Keigo misinterpreted it. She walked toward him and laid a hand on his cheek. Keigo's face went red at the touch, to the point where he *knew* that the color his face was now enough to camouflage whatever bruises there wer. Unlike before though with Isshin he didn't wince, though he could feel his face tingle, as well as other places. 'Oh, please don't look down', he silently prayed.

She finally pulled her hand away from Keigo's cheek and paused for a few seconds, blinking. "You were right", she finally answered and smiled, "they do look worse than they are. I believe you should start feeling better later on tonight."

Keigo mutely nodded, face still red from his touch. Nearby Karin snickered at him. Finally Isshin was in front of him again with the bandages and cream, and instructed Keigo on how to apply it. Behind them, nobody noticed Belldandy intently looking at her hand.

"Are you sure it's ok? I don't have any money on me right now...", Keigo replied, still stunned from earlier.

"Don't think twice about it", Isshin mentioned. "I'm more surprised at how that bandage was wrapped earlier. Was it wrapped like that by the nurse?"

"No, uh, actually -ack!", Keigo yelped as the bandage was wrapped around his lower jaw. "I, uh, took it off for a bit and put it back on. It was getting in the way and it hurt a bit."

Isshin hummed at that as he continued to wrap. "The nurse probably didn't wrap it correctly the first time. This time you should be a bit more comfortable." He gave further instructions on when to remove it later as well as how to properly wrap it again when he needed to put it back on. "I will agree with my wife though, you should be feeling better soon. She has a knack for knowing these things", he mentioned, allowing himself a small smile.

Mizuiro looked at his watch and noticed the time. "Keigo", he signaled.

Keigo looked at him and nodded. Turning back to the Kurosaki's and Orihime, he explained. "I apologize for sounding rude, but Mizuiro and I can't stay long. We were hoping to catch Kurosaki-san to thank him, but..."

"It's ok", Belldandy replied. "We are grateful that you were considerate enough to do this, and we are thankful to you that we have the full story on what happened earlier". The other girls in the room all nodded at that, though Isshin stayed silent, watching. "If you don't catch him later you are more than welcome to come visit again."

"Really?", Keigo perked up while Mizuiro hid a smirk at his reaction. Belldandy nodded and Keigo laughed, scratching his head. "Well, we can probably stay another 15 minutes or so..."

The fifteen minutes had passed by quickly, with some small talk, mostly on Keiichi and how he'd been since being brought home. With a bow and another thank you for extra bandages and medication, both boys left the household. As everyone turned to go back into the house, Yuzu stayed by the door, eyes following the boys as they went beyond the temple gates. Looking upward, her thoughts continued on her brother.

'Niisama, where are you?'

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The day was just starting to approach it's evening, the blue sky overhead beginning to take on the twinges of a darker shade of blue and the horizon was just starting to show a red hue indicating that sunset was close at hand. The wind had picked up slightly, giving more refreshment from the heat of earlier.

Ichigo made it across the final street to the riverbed, the same part he was sure where that event had taken place. Finally making it to the edge of the riverbed incline he gasped.

The river flowed by as before, however on his side of the river there was what he thought was a pond just off to the side. He went to take a closer look.

'What the hell?', he had thought as he took in more detail.

The 'pond' he could see stretched out from the river, just barely connecting to it, allowing some excess water to both enter or exit pond. He walked slowly around the perimeter, as the pond itself was the shape was close to being a circle. 'It has to be some 40 - 45 feet to the other side'. Kneeling at the edge he peered into it, trying to get an idea of how deep it was.

'Where the hell did this come from'? Something was tugging at the back of his mind. Closing his eyes he began to concentr-

"Shi-ichi?", he heard someone cry in the distance.

He opened his eyes and stood up and turned. 'Tatsuki..'

"Shi-ichi!", she called again. She was jogging towards him now. Looking at her, he could see that she was dressed for her evening run. Within seconds she was next to him, jogging in place. A sheen of sweat could be seen on her face and arms, but she hardly looked winded. In fact, with her hair bobbing up and down and the look in her eyes she appeared like she was just itching to take off at full sprint.

"I thought that was you", she mentioned.

"Tatsuki, what are you doing out here?"

Tatsuki stopped jogging in place and gave him a half lid stare. "I'm out on stroll", she drolled sarcastically. She then gave him a quick once-over. "I could ask you the same thing, Shi-ichi. You're still in school uniform. What happened to make you come out here?" Her eyes slightly widened and she placed a hand to her head and sighed. "And here I thought you had long given up on trying to solve the Karakura Town Mystery", she mumbled.

"Wait, wait, the what?"

She frowned at him, hand still on her forehead. "That's not funny, Shi-ichi, especially how you used to used to say that being the one who had been there when it happened you should be able to figure it out".

"I what", he replied before looking down and concentrating. 'That's right', he recalled. 'That night', he closed his eyes and focused. 'After mom had held me she collapsed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Mommy! Mommy! Are you alright?!", he cried, as she laid herself on the ground.

"I'm... I'm fine dear", she responded weakly. "I'm just tired, that's all. As long as you're safe that's all that matters". She reached out and cupped his face. "Everything will be fine from now on, you'll see".

It was still raining. Realizing that he was still wearing his rain jacket he swiftly unbuttoned it and covered his mothers face as best he could. He had to get help and he couldn't leave her here. He was beginning to panic when he heard someone calling out to him.

Looking behind him he saw a few people at the top edge of the incline to the riverbed. Some were already running to him as best they could in the rain.

"HEY!", one had cried. "ARE YOU ALRIGHT!?" Finally getting close enough, they had briefly paused when they noticed his mother's state.

"We have to help her", he said, tears in his eyes. "Please", he pleaded.

One immediately knelt next to him, holding an umbrella over him before shouting over his shoulder. "SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULENCE!"

As others raced to respond a few more came closer. Some walking past them, a few more kneeling next him.

"Kurosaki-san?" one breathed in surprise.

"You know her?", asked another.

"Yes, she and her husband run a clinic. I.. I go there...", she stopped herself as she noticed Ichigo. "You're her son, aren't you? Are you ok, what happened?"

"It's, it's my fault. I- I saw someone, and, and-"

"Did you see what happened?", the man next to him asked. "There was this bright light and a sound that sounded like an explosion went off".

"What?", he asked, confused.

Others were making their way over, and he could barely make out some of the conversation the growing crowd was having. "Did you hear that?" "Yeah I did" "That was some light show" "Was it lightning?" "Never seen lightning like this." "Sounded like some kind of bomb, like you hear on the tv shows" "Holy shit, look at that crater!" "Does lightning do that?" "Maybe some kind of terrorist attack!" "Stupid, why here of all places!" "Yeah, if were an attack it'd be bigger, right?" "That's not funny!" "Maybe some chance weather phenomenon."

The comments would blend together as he turned his attention back on his mother. 'Please be ok, please be ok', he inwardly chanted.

It would not be long before they were both picked up.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ichigo blinked and snapped his head back, seemingly to avoid the fingers next to his face.

Tatsuki snapped her fingers one more time before bringing her hand back. "Shi-ichi, you're zoning there. What's up?"

"Nothing, nothing, Tatsuki." He fought hard to ignore the rush of feelings that memory provoked in him. Another instance in which he somehow hurt his mother. He grit his teeth in frustration as he remembered what happened earlier.

I brief image of Masaki's face filled his thoughts, wearing the expression his mother Belldandy had earlier and his heart clenched. 'Would I... would I be doing this if she were still with us? I'm the one at fault. I'm the one who's been screwing up. Maybe...maybe dad was right'. He let out a breath.

"Shi-ichi, what wrong?"

He noted her change in tone but still answered in the negative. "It's ok, Tatsuki. It's nothing".

"Don't give me that", she curtly replied. She took a step forward and looked up at him, and he could see the concern she had.

"Really, what's wrong?"

'You're useless without me Shi-ichi', she thought, not unkindly as she could see him mulling his answer over in his head. 'The same mama's boy I remember from when we first met'.

"Get up! You're a boy! Boy's shouldn't cry from that!" she exclaimed, still holding her hands up in the way Noriyuki-sensei had taught her.

In spite of that, her oddly hair-colored opponent was still on his rump, sniffling. Letting out a huff, she walked to him and helped him up. "I can't believe your crying. There's no crying in karate!", she exclaimed again, arms wide now in exasperation. He wiped his eyes and she couldn't help but frown. "What was your name again", she asked, having forgotten it after his introduction today.

"Ichigo. Ichigo Kurosaki", he got out as continued to wipe his face with his wrist.

"Ichigo? Your a girl?"

"IT MEANS GREAT PROTECTOR!", he yelled back, embarrassed.

The way he shouted it back, the look in his eyes as he said it, tears now forgotten, she reevaluated him again.

Good.

"Then show me!", she responded, retaking her stance.

"I will!", he responded back, taking his.

That was the first time she met Ichigo Kurosaki. Though he had fire in his eyes as he retook his stance, she bested him. And again. And again.

And again.

And each time, he sniffled, and she prodded him on again.

Yet in spite of how one-sided it was, she had fun.

Class was now over, and he was fidgeting, sniffling and frustrated at how things had turned out.

And then she showed up.

Even at four, Tatsuki knew that this woman was special. She was very, very pretty. Like those girls in the magazines that her daddy liked. Though why mom kept hitting him for it she didn't quite understand, but...

The boy, Ichigo, promptly jumped up and practically flew toward her, hugging her as she knelt down to him. She nearly face-faulted at the display and his 180 degree turn in emotional state.

Something, something turned her stomach at the display, with the woman she knew without a doubt was his mother. She didn't like it. 'He's a boy, he shouldn't be doing that', she thought.

And so time went on. Days became weeks. Weeks became months. And through it all, was one constant.

That irritatingly idiotic smile he wore whenever his mother was around.

It didn't matter what she did or how the match ended, usually with her victory and him at times in tears. But she learned, like clockwork, they'd magically disappear the second he caught wind of his mother's presence. She snorted at it all.

There was something though. Something about him that nagged at her. She didn't hate him, but she wished that he could figure out for himself that he was boy and should act like one. But how?

"And this boy... he cries when you beat him? But stops when his mom shows up?", her father clarified as she sat with him at the kitchen table.

"Um hmm", Tatsuki confirmed, sipping her juice.

"Hmmmmm...." Her daddy then frowned and looked as if he was thinking about it real hard about what to do. "He's to weak to steal her from me.... clearly a momma's boy.... a crybaby weakling..." he muttered to himself.

"Steal, daddy?", Tatsuki asked, overhearing her father's mumbles. She then scrunched her eyes. "He's too goody-goody for stealing, daddy". No, something like that didn't sound right when applying to the boy she felt needed help.

"Ahahahahahah!! Don't you mind that, Tat-chan! Just daddy thinking out loud!" Her daddy then gave her a serious look, "Do you want to make a boy out of him, Tat-chan?"

Tatsuki frowned and put her cup down, thinking. After a moment, she raised her head to look at her father. "A boy should be like a boy. I think he's going to get creamed being like he is". She pursed her lips and thought some more before taking another sip.

Her daddy nodded in approval, "Well said Tat-chan! Clearly the Arisawa way of thinking at work! A boy like that is no boy at all! Crying just because a girl beat him? It's laughable!"

Tatsuki nodded. Daddy was really smart on things like this. 'He can't take care of himself', she thought of the boy once again and took one last gulp.

"He's simply a crybaby. A crybaby weakling hiding behind his mother's apron! Don't you ever let yourself become the same you get me?" her father demanded, to which Tatsuki emphatically nodded.

The next several days Tatsuki found herself doing her best to be paired with Ichigo. When she did she found herself working a bit harder, pushing Ichigo as far as her little 4 year old body could. Each time he sniffled or cried as he got up she pushed herself harder, aggravated.

This would continue for the next several weeks.

One day however, after dealing Ichigo another defeat she found herself being called by Noriyuki sensei.

"Yes, Sensei", she asked.

"Arisawa-kun, I have someone here who wants to talk to you", he said. Stepping to the side, she found herself looking upwards to Ichigo's mother.

"Hello, Arisawa-san", Belldandy greeted.

"Good afternoon, Kurosaki-san", Tatsuki bowed, a bit confused. She turned her head to check if Ichigo would come flying out anytime now.

"Can we talk for a few minutes, Arisawa-san?", she asked.

Turning back to the boy's mother she tilted her head. "Ok", she answered.

They both soon found themselves seated some feet away from the main training hall. Out of sight, Belldandy peered in and saw Ichigo practicing a few katas, not knowing she was there.

She smiled at seeing him work so hard, and turned around to see Tatsuki frowning at her. Confused at the expression, she folded her hands on her lap, and before she could ask what was wrong, Tatsuki spoke.

"It's your fault, y'know".

Belldandy blinked, not exactly expecting that. "My fault?", she questioned.

"Yeah. It's your fault that's he's a crybaby weakling".

"Why do you say that", Belldandy asked, curious to why Tatsuki felt this way.

"Because".

"Because..", she prodded, and Tatsuki's face screwed up in thought.

"He's always so happy with you. Always smiling, giggling. Even when he shouldn't be he just keeps smiling like a goofball. I pound him and he cries, but he always seems to forget when you come get him." She then stopped and looked down, her hands on her knees. "Every time".

Belldandy continued to look at the young girl who had a serious look on her face and waited for her to speak again. The child's face then turned up to look at her.

"What's going to happen when your not there?"

Belldandy's eyes widened, surprised at such a question from a girl this young. For the last several weeks Ichigo had been practicing a lot more than normal while at home. At first she had no concern, happy that he had taken such interest in his classes, but after that he had been almost single minded in his focus on it. When questioned, he had simply answered that he had to. He had relented from practice when she asked him to, but he'd be back at it the next day.

A few days ago she had heard him mention something about an Arisawa but didn't press him about it, but she had recalled that there was a student in his classes with that name. In concern that perhaps her son was having problems or perhaps being bullied she had made a decision to come to the class and see for herself. What she had just heard now had blown those concerns away.

"If your not there, what's going to happen to him then?"

For a moment, Belldandy looked away in thought, as if those words struck a cord in her that she had to take moment to recover.

"I'm sorry", she then heard Tatsuki mention, and Belldandy realized that she had been in lost in thought. "No", Belldandy replied, "it's ok. I was just remembering something from long ago. I'm just surprised, Arisawa-san, and to be honest a little relieved."

"Haah?" Tatsuki's eyes scrunched up in confusion. For a moment she had been worried, as the elder woman had gone silent for a few moments. In that time Belldandy's face had become a bit sad as she sat quiet next to her, making her think that perhaps she said something wrong.

"The reason I had come to talk to you Arisawa-san was I was concerned about Ichigo's recent behavior. He's been practicing really hard recently", this bit caught Tatsuki's attention. "And I admit I was worried that perhaps he was having problems with being bullied."

Tatsuki's eyes widened, but before she could say anything Belldandy continued. "But I'm relieved now to find out that Ichigo has a friend who is worried about him".

Tatsuki's eyes widened further. 'A friend?', she found herself thinking. Did she really think about that happy-go-lucky, idiotic smiling crybaby as a friend? She found herself considering that and turned back to the training hall, trying to peek over the seat to where Ichigo may be.

After a moment she smirked as she made a decision.

She suddenly hopped off her chair, surprising Belldandy. She turned to face the woman and grinned.

"Doncha worry", she said, suddenly moving her right arm across her chest. "About when you can't be with him, 'cause I will!", she proclaimed, giving Belldandy a thumbs up.

Startled at the girl's enthusiasm, Belldandy found herself smiling in return. "Then I'll be counting on you Arisawa-san."

Tatsuki gave her a big nod to her and was about to turn back when she stopped and turned to look at Belldandy again.

"Tatsuki", she said.

"Hmm?"

"My name's Tatsuki", she smiled.

"Then I'll be counting on you, Tatsuki-chan".

With that Tatsuki turned back to the class and let Noriyuki-sensei know that their talk was over. Class would soon finish and Tatsuki once more found herself watching Ichigo grinning from ear to ear when he found his mother already waiting. It still sucked that he was doing that, but she'd break him out of it sooner or later.

"I'm happy to know that you have such a good friend here, Ichigo", she heard Belldandy say.

"I do?", he queried.

"Yes, Tatsuki-chan and I had a very interesting talk", she said, turning to Tatsuki and smiled.

The gaping look on Ichigo's face would be something she would treasure for the rest of her life.

Those months had soon turned to years, and Tatsuki and Ichigo would indeed become friends. It took some time for the boy to turn his opinion around but he found himself agreeing with that assessment by the time the two had started elementary school.

Tatsuki herself stayed true to her vow, as it was soon apparent that some of the other kids began picking on Ichigo for some dumb things like his hair color. Though Ichigo could defend himself he often found that they wouldn't stop even after that, but they would back off as Tatsuki went on the offensive.

The bullying, she had found, had an extra benefit of prickling his pride, and found himself practicing harder. It would be at this time that he had finally managed to tag her and tag her hard in practice. 'Finally', she thought grinning, seeing the look in his eyes.

And so the years continued, with both together in practice and in class, as well as out of it, be it the arcade, for food, or just to hang out. Though she had made many friends in the years that had gone by they were never like her 'Shi-ichi', as she had dubbed him one day after having an epiphany from his numbered backpack.

Her friends at school were always so...so girly, she found herself realizing. As fun as it was to talk to them she found that she just couldn't relate to them on certain subjects, and it wasn't funny when they didn't have the interest to talk about any of the interesting martial arts films or other cool things that she and Shi-ichi could talk about. It was also this time that she realized that she and Ichigo were not only friends, but best friends at that. Of course, she wouldn't tell him that.

She would have another realization sometime after her twelvth birthday. Both she and Ichigo had been in another mock match in class as they had usually been. In that time there weren't many others students in her class that wanted to be paired off with the two, as both had advanced beyond the others with the drive they both showed.

And for Tatsuki, unbelievably, inconceivably, the unthinkable finally happened.

"Ugh!", she had grunted, landing hard on the floor. She grimaced as she held her back, feeling something hurting a bit more than it should. As she brought herself to a sitting position, she had turned her head to see Noriyuki-sensei raising Ichigo's hand in victory.

He had won. And if he didn't wipe that shit eating grin off his face it would be his last ever.

She finally got to her feat and both had bowed to each other, signaling the end of the match. It was then the students had paired off to spar against each other that she grabbed him and made sure that he was her partner, determined to work off the frustration and shock.

"Congrats, Shi-ichi", she had begrudgingly offered. "Enjoy it while it lasts, as it'll be your last", she smirked at him as she took her stance, however...

However there was something different. Ichigo hadn't stopped hopping, as if he were still in his match with her. His hair was bouncing up and down and some sweat was falling off with each bounce. His eyes were focused, confident, staring into hers. He then stopped and took his stance, raising his arms in a guard position and smiled at her.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Trying to understand why her cheeks felt so hot Ichigo then responded. "I don't think so. After all this time I think the scales are finally tipped in my favor".

"Why you!", she growled, pushing those weird feelings aside. "I'll show you how they're tipped!"

With the pecking order soon reestablished class had been let out for that day, but Tatsuki had found herself studying Ichigo more than she did before. Not understanding it she decided to take off, telling Ichigo to tell his mother 'hi' for her.

Unfortunately for Tatsuki, thoughts of Ichigo didn't end after she had left. For the next several days the boy had been on her mind to the point she wondered why the kami were torturing her.

"And now for the next topic - boys!", Midori Arakawa chirped. It was lunchtime, and she was seated with a few of her friends from class.

She groaned at the topic change. 'Shi-ichi, where are you?', she internally grumbled, hoping beyond hope she could get out of there. He had been absent for a few days, both in school and in practice. Though they were no longer in the same class they did hang around each other when they could. And if there were ever a time that she wanted to hang out with him...

For awhile she had some concern before brushing it off, knowing that sooner or later he'd be back. 'Though he better have a good explanation as to -'

"Well, Tatsuki?"

"Wha"?

"She asked if there was anyone you liked Tatsuki?"

"Haaah"?

"She asked if you liked any guys. You do 'like' guys, do you, Tatsuki?"

"What kind of stupid question is that? Of course I -", she stopped, as an image of Ichigo's face came to mind. A very confindent face, one that she had been seeing more of recently. The kind of face that hadn't left her alone for the last several days. It was bad enough that when she did she felt weird and that she felt.. her.. heart... Oh. My. God.

"Tatsuki? Tatsuki? Heh, she's all red! Looks like she does, girls!", Midori squealed.

"So who is it Tatsuki?", Makie Goto asked. "It's Ichigo, it has to be!", she then chirped.

"IT IS NOT!", Tatsuki yelled, completely red.

"I'm so jealous!", Makie continued. "You two are always together, and he's just so cool with that hair!"

Makie was about to continue but stopped as a glare promising death came her way.

Tatsuki thanked whatever gods their were when lunch ended and the others had decided it was safer to question each other about guys instead of her. However, the realization of what that conversation had burned at her. 'I...I like Shi-ichi'?

It burned enough at her that she completely forgot to grill Ichigo on where he had been when he returned. After that she had somewhat avoided Ichigo, trying to figure out with herself exactly what was happening, and had prayed and wished for anything to get her mind off of things and back to a semblance of normalcy.

Heaven would answer her wish.

A few days later she had been off to lunch when she saw a couple girls dragging another away. Getting a better look she had realized she recognized the girl was from her class. Decision made, she took off after them.

The group of girls had surrounded her classmate, who had been trying to retreat at every chance. They had been pulling at her hair and kicking her, and finally it seemed that she had run out of room to run and crouched on the ground, holding her head and tucking her feet in.

The sight disgusted her. Cracking her knuckles she got ready to charge when the girl in question screamed.

"ICHIGO-KUN! ICHIGO-KUN!"

Tatsuki stopped, surprise overriding her. 'No, it couldn't be...'. At that point her mind supplied to her the fact that the girl had recently returned to school.

About the same time Shi-ichi did.

"Did you think hiding behind that guy would save you?!"

"Yeah, I bet she thought if she had a boyfriend to run to he would save her!"

"Hah! We told you before, Orihime if- OOOMP!", the girl didn't have a chance to finish, as she was currently sliding headfirst across the ground.

The others turned around and stared, for they all knew who they were facing. Gulping they turned to find that they were now in the position their prey had been, with no exit.

They didn't last a minute under Tatsuki's barrage.

"Th-thank you", the girl, Orihime Inoue she remembered, had told her as she approached. She was sniffling and rubbing her eyes and nursing a few bruises.

"Hey", she asked grabbing Orihime's arm. For a second Orihime's eyes widened as she had thought that she had traded one problem for another. "Who were you screaming for", Tatsuki asked, her eyes boring into Orihime.

"I-Ichigo. Ichigo Kurosaki.", she replied. At that Tatsuki let go of her arm, surprised before shaking her head. "Why didn't you fight back?", Tatsuki asked her.

"I-I don't know how. I-I've never needed to know."

"Did you tell anyone that you were being beaten up?"

Orihime shook her head and Tatsuki sighed. "C'mon", Tatsuki said. "Let's get you to the nurse's office."

"Hey", she asked Orihime as they approached the main building.

"Yes"?

"How do you know Shi-ichi?"

"Who"?

"I mean, Ichigo."

"Oh. I've been living with him for a few weeks now."

Tatsuki stopped, her mind reeling at the information. Orihime stopped a few feet ahead of her and waited. "Wha.. why?", Tatsuki finally managed to ask.

Orihime looked away for a moment before turning back to her. "My brother died, and Ichigo's mother took me in for awhile." She then turned and began walking to the nurse's office.

"Oh", Tatsuki managed, all of a sudden feeling guilty for some reason.

After being bandaged up, they had both returned to class, hungry as they both missed lunch. When school finally ended she went to the main gate to wait for Ichigo and ask him for details.

As she waited she found herself wondering what she should say, considering she had gone out of her way to avoid him for the past few days. Seeing the color of his hair in a crowd she brightened up and momentarily forgot about what to say to him. Finally the crowd parted and she saw his face and again she felt her heart rate speed up a bit. He looked in her direction and broke into a grin and felt the heat rise to her cheeks. She shook her head, smirked and began to walk towards him. "Hey Shi-ich-"

"Ichigo-kun!" She heard a voice cry out.

Turning her head slightly she saw Orihime Inoue, who had been some feet ahead of her run up to him. Tatsuki then noticed that his gaze had been following Orihime the entire time. She stopped her own approach as she felt her chest begin to hurt at that realization. As Orihime finally met up with Ichigo she saw his face turn to concern as he saw her bandaged up.

Ignoring the tightness in her chest she closed the gap between them. Finally arriving within earshot she called out to Ichigo. Seeing her, Ichigo raised his hand in greeting. "Yo, been awhile Tatsuki".

"Arisawa-san", Orihime greeted.

Before she could say anything Orihime turned back to Ichigo. "She's the one who saved me", she told him. Ichigo then turned to look at Tatsuki and smiled.

The three had talked, and on the way to Ichigo's home he had filled in the details to her. She had been saddened to hear about the loss of her brother and disgusted at how her own family had treated her. At least Orihime's aunt had been decent, she learned from Ichigo. Learning of how the insurance was being handled and that Orihime was being set up to live nearby she found herself somewhat relieved that she would not be living together with Shi-ichi too much longer.

Watching Orihime enter the gate to his home Ichigo pulled Tatsuki to the side. "Thank you for helping her". he told her. "She had mentioned that she was being bullied but there was no way I could help her."

"It was no problem, they went down pretty quick", she told him.

"Tatsuki", he said after a moment.

"Hmm?"

"I have a favor to ask."

She blinked at him. "What kind of favor?"

"Can you watch out for her for me?"

"What"?

"I can't be there for her since she's not in my class, and I can't find her if someone manages to grab her. You're both in the same class. Can you do it, Tatsuki"?

In spite of how she felt earlier hearing about Orihime staying with Ichigo she felt her pride being prickled now. "Do you even have to ask", she replied feeling somewhat insulted. "There's no way I'll let her be after today, she's nearly as useless as you are."

"Hey", he mentioned, his own pride pricked. "I've gotten a lot better recently, as you should know".

"Don't forget Shi-ichi, the win-loss column in very much in my favor", she grinned evilly at him.

"Your cocky now, but that will change faster than you'll know!", he shot back.

She grinned and continued to argue with him, enjoying the chance to needle him. And though her heart had somewhat settled as the sense of normalcy she had begged for had returned, she found that if she knew ahead of time of how it would return she would never had made that wish.

Despite that she had stuck by her words and watched out for the other girl. The bullies were scared off now that Orihime had a friend who had power, and her ego found itself being stroked at realizing that.

As for Orihime, Tatsuki found that she wasn't a bad person at all and found herself becoming good friends with her, though she did have her eccentricies. Really, really weird food being among them, as she once found herself pushing away a chocolate covered apricot with cherries.

She did though find herself in a conundrum with Shi-ichi though. She did find herself paying more attention to him; his hair, his eyes, the way he moved, and realized that she, as bizarre as it was, really, really liked him. She also knew that Orihime, in the short time she and Ichigo knew each other had gotten very close, to the point that her stomach clenched at how fast they bonded, while she and Ichigo had known each other for over 8 years now!

She kept her mouth shut though, thinking of what may happen should she actually voice what she felt aloud, and instead concentrated on the now in her time with both of them. Of course, even as time went by the 'now' had a direct way of reminding her of where she stood.

Orihime was pretty. Very, very pretty. She had a very nice smile, and her growing hair, once just at her shoulders when they met, was now starting to grow past her shoulders. She would find herself staring into a mirror and comparing her own dark colored spiked short hair with Orihime's flowing rust colored locks.

She also had gotten into a habit of looking down at her chest and cupping her small but growing breasts. Orihime, on the other hand had already been wearing a bra when they had first met. She had recently gone up another cup size, and Tatsuki had flushed in anger at being in a training bra, practically a washboard when compared to her friend.

And the boys noticed. Oh, how they had noticed. If those idiots had drooled any more they'd be able to go fishing. And worse was she even caught Shi-ichi catching himself and turned away, blushing. At least he had the decency to look away and not make an idiot of himself like the rest. And Orihime through it all had been oblivious to all of it! She didn't know whether to be relieved that Orihime could be that scatterbrained or frustrated that she knew that Orihime was not stupid.

And finally, she also had glumly realized, were their differences in taste of their wardrobes. Tatsuki liked loose clothes, pants, sweatshirts, anything she could move easily in. She hated to wear dresses or anything she had deemed 'too girly'. The school uniform was an exception as she *had* to wear it. Orihime, on the other hand, could wear it all and make it look good. Dresses, blouses, skirts, the type of shoes that go with them, even a sun hat to go with it.

She didn't even want to think about make up or jewelry.

She was lacking in everything, and she knew it. The only good news, if it could be called good, was that she didn't really know where Ichigo stood on this. Despite some of his own glances at Orihime he never treated her any different, unlike the other boys who did whatever they could to make her notice them. Not that they would succeed, as Tatsuki knew that Orihime already had it bad for Ichigo.

What would Shi-ichi do if he realized what Orihime had felt for him?

What would she do if Orihime realized her own charms and decided to make headway on Shi-ichi?

What would he do then if he found out her own feelings?

And where would she be when he would realize that she didn't have anything to compete with Orihime on?

She had often squished those thoughts, ignoring the empty feeling in her chest at the thought of Shi-ichi leaving her behind. But if she was going to lose, then dammit, she was going to spend as much time with him as she could.

Through thick and thin.

And for all the problems that seemed to find Shiichi, there were those days that he went looking for it too. If it wasn't him being jumped it was him doing his best to live up to his girlish sounding name. The Great Protector hated it when he was picked on for stupid things and he hated it when it happened to others too.

God was he ever lucky to have her.

After all, what kind of best friend would she be if she didn't keep her promises?

Tatsuki listened as Ichigo finished his story. They both sat next to each other by the riverbed, a few feet away from the pond. Ichigo sat cross legged and hunched forward, looking across the river. Tatsuki sat to his right, legs outstretched leaning backward with her arms straight out to the ground helping her stay upward. A light breeze blew by, causing their hair to slightly ruffle, and Tatsuki continued to look at him, but could not see his eyes at the angle she was at.

"So that's it, huh", she said looking straight ahead now. "Really sounds like your old man reamed you good." Not that he hadn't gotten into trouble before, but the way he talked about this one...

"Yeah...", he trailed off and then looked upward. "I've... I've been thinking that maybe he was right, maybe I did go too far. Mom... mom wasn't really happy about it either."

Tatsuki turned her head back to him. 'Was that it?', she thought. It was no secret that Shi-ichi had a habit of getting into fights, but she could personally attest that most if not all those fights were those in which he was defending himself or someone else.

She scowled. 'Like with Yokomura', she remembered for the second time that day. Shi-ichi had been extremely lucky that she arrived in time, finding that they had ganged up on him, and for all his skill he always had issues with crowds. Speaking of which...

"Hey Shi-ichi".

"Hmm?"

"When were you going to tell me that you leveled up?"

"What"? Ichigo turned to her, not expecting that question.

"Earlier today with those guys. You've always had a helluva time with crowds."

Ichigo's mouth opened but no words came out. He then turned back towards the river and squinted as images appeared in his mind. He opened his eyes and sighed. 'I can't believe I had problems with that', he thought.

"So, what's up with that? You get special tranin' or something?"

He thought for a moment, not quite sure how to answer that without making Tatsuki think he was crazy. Finally a thought did come to him and he grimaced. "Yeah, pops has been goin' on harder in the mornings with his 'preeminent training'" bit and all.

Tatsuki blinked and smirked, "Learnin' the hard way, eh Shi-ichi?"

A corner of his mouth involuntarily turned up, earlier memories of them together being confirmed. 'Tatsuki really has been here for me, more than before', he thought. 'All because I stayed in that martial arts class". "Yeah", he answered her.

Tatsuki turned away from Ichigo, looking out at the river, "So is that why you're playing detective again"?

Ichigo frowned, remembering again why he was out here. "No", he answered. "I... I kinda blew up in front of mom".

Tatsuki's head whipped back to Ichigo, stunned look on her face. "You did what?!?"

"About earlier... when dad was reaming me over, mom came out and broke it up. Pops went in and we stayed outside. She wanted to know why I put them down as hard as I did and I... I couldn't keep my mouth shut in time." His face lowered. "I had to get out, walk, just get away and now..."

Tatsuki sighed, "When it rains, it pours huh?"

Ichigo was silent, shrugging his shoulders.

"Tatsuki", Ichigo finally said after a moment.

"Yeah?"

"About earlier, with those guys. Do you think that maybe I overdid it?"

Tatsuki frowned and gave Ichigo a hard stare, "Ichigo."

He blinked, shocked at her using his real name. "Yeah?"

"What does your name mean?"

He stared at her for a moment before answering, wondering where she was going with this. "It means Great Protector".

She smiled in response, "That's right. Great Protector. That's who you are and that's what you do, 'Ichigo'. It's what you've done. It's what you will do. You protect those who can't protect themselves. And I don't care what your dad says that asshat and his pals had that whoopin' comin' to them for what they did to that guy."

She stood up and grunted as she stretched, noting the now orange cast horizon. She then turned her head down toward him wearing a grin. "So stop worrying so much about it. The only thing you do need to do is apologize to your mom 'bout blowin' up on her like you said you did."

He smiled back at her as she stepped closer to him. "Thanks, Tatsuki".

She ruffled his hair, knowing it'd annoy him. She kept a laugh in as his face twisted. "Anytime Shi-ichi. Can't have my sidekick gettin' all depressed on me, y'know."

He blinked, the moment now gone. "Say what?"

"Side kick. Son Goku has Krillin. Ryu has Ken. Every hero needs a sidekick Shi-ichi, and dammit, you're mine!"

Ichigo smirked at her answer, gripping her outstretched hand as she helped him up. "Your really pushin' there, Tatsuki".

"Heh, whatever Shi-ichi." Tatsuki then stuck her other hand out and pointed a finger at his face, just in front of his nose, nearly making his eyes cross. "Don't think just because you leveled up without me noticing is going to change that fact, now I'm ready to work twice as hard". She then pulled on his hand, still clenched in hers, and brought him into a headlock. "It really wouldn't look so good now, would it", she asked him, beginning to noogie him.

He grunted as he twisted under her arm, trying to get free as she rubbed into his head. Failing that he got his left arm around her and tried to use his greater height and strength to his advantage. Feeling his arm around her waist she quickly let go and twisted coming face to face with him. She was about to grap his collar when she realized she misjudged the small distance between them when their noses touched.

Pausing as she fought back a blush Ichigo took advantage as he in turn grabbed her jacket by the shoulders and threw himself back into a roll. Pushing a foot into her stomach he then launched her as his back hit the ground. She landed on her back with a thud, and groaned as she rubbed her head.

They both sat up slightly and twisted their heads around to look at the other and took in their state, frowning at each other. Ichigo had his hair mussed up from her noogie and she in turn had a frustrated look on her face as they stared at each other. Realizing how ridiculous both looked they chuckled at each other.

Rising from her spot Tatsuki began to pat her pants, knocking away any pieces of grass and dirt that were on it and rearranged her jacket as Ichigo did likewise. Looking at her watch she realized the time and turned toward the incline of the riverbed.

"Gotta get back to my run now", she told him. She took a step before stopping and turning back to him. "I really wouldn't worry about earlier Shi-ichi", she told him again. "Your mom loves you, and you love her back as much if not more. No matter how bad it was, she'll forgive you, and I know you'll watch yourself better in the future."

She then took off and raised her arm at him as she started up the incline. "I'll see you later, Shi-ichi!", she called out to him.

His eyes followed her until she disappeared over the top of the incline and felt the weight on his shoulders lighten. A cooler breeze blew by once more.

"Thanks, Tatsuki", he said softly.

After a moment he turned and walked down the riverbed, arms in his pockets. He figured about another mile or so up he'd be able to hit the bridge and be on his way back home.

'Great Protector, huh?', he thought as the section of the riverbed he was at tightened inward. He figured he had another quarter to go before he reached the bridge. His father had also mentioned his name earlier as well. He pulled his right hand out of his pocket and looked at it as he made a fist, thinking again about earlier and what felt off. He opened and closed it a few times, and finally closed it, tightening it enough to make his knuckles crack. Looking up again he squinted, making out some figures up ahead.

'Are they fighting?', he wondered from the looks of it. He felt himself beginning to walk faster and came to a halt as he nearly broke into a run, recalling what happened earlier.

He frowned at his indecision, hampered at recalling his actions which started it all. His eyes darted back and forth, thinking of what he should do when he lifted his head back at where the exchanges were taking place. He sucked in a breath as he realized that not only was it two on one, but the one was not fighting back. He was just standing there, seemingly allowing himself to be pummeled.

His eyes narrowed.

'It means Great Protector', he remembered he broke out into a run, choice made.

'You protect those who can't protect themselves'.

His eyes widened as he realized the one not fighting back was the guy who saved him a little bit back.

'That's who you are and that's what you do, 'Ichigo''.

He growled in anger as he recognized the long haired one and poured on the speed as he saw him grab and begin to lift a large sized rock.

'It's what you've done'.

He covered the distance in seconds and jumped upward, leg outstretched and twisted, intending to bury it into the boy's head. He smirked while in mid-air, feeling good as the long haired boy went flying. He twisted and kicked again and used the momentum while still in midair to wrap his legs around the others aggressor's neck and violently threw himself back, his hands hitting the ground palms open and vaulting the glasses wearing boy over.

The boy crashed into the dirt, flipping over himself once more before he came to a stop. The other long haired one regained his senses and stood up before catching his breath, recognizing his opponent.

"Ichigo Kurosaki!?" he squeaked out. Ichigo smirked at him in recognition, and felt his legs begin to give out as he knew all too well that Ichigo remembered what he did the last time.

"This is bad! I'm outta here", he cried as he bolted for the riverbed incline. His glasses wearing friend was right behind him.

Ichigo's eyes followed them as until they both disappeared over the edge.

'It's what you will do'.

He stared hard at the top of the incline. He closed his eyes and took in a breath through his mouth. After a moment he released it through his nose. "It's what I do", he said softly to himself, repeating Tatsuki's words. "It's what I will do", he vowed.

He opened his eyes.

His mind, which had been so clouded earlier by his actions, both at school and at home, both in thoughts of present and past life, was finally clear.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Belldandy stood over the crib, softly touching her newborn's head of hair. The baby had just been laid down on his stomach, and the pacifier that Keiichi had been sucking was slowing in movement, a sign that he was falling asleep.

She bent down and softly kissed his cheek, inhaling his newborn scent and rose. Satisfied that he was asleep, she moved towards the dresser in her room and looked into the mirror. Seeing her reflection gazing back at her she reached out and touched the surface and closed her eyes.

There. She could 'just' feel it.

She hadn't been hallucinating earlier, she thought. She had felt an almost forgotten tingle as she healed Keigo and found herself staring at her hand, almost in wonderment.

Her powers, her broader powers, were returning to her.

'Another day or so, maybe just less than a week', she figured for full reconnection with Yggdrasil. When she had been sent back in time, her connection with Yggsdrasil had been practically severed, and she herself had limited access to her powers. She had enough power to cast a few minor spells as well as healing, but nothing more.

Well, almost nothing.

From that time she understood that she did have enough power for one major spell. She had always known what it had been for, and understood that that one bolt was to ensure that she would survive what was to come and continue to be here for her family.

Her thoughts then turned towards her other family. Urd. Skuld. It had been seventeen years since she had last seen them. She also understood that while it had been a great deal of time for her, they would have only missed her a week.

She wondered how they would react to having more family, that she would be a mother. Though she would not being going back to Heaven, she would be able to talk to them again. She knew that at this time she should be happy bordering on anticipation at their own reunion, but her immediate concern had been on one person.

Her eldest.

It had hurt when he had blurted out what he said earlier in anger.

'I'm not your son!'

She remembered how her heart had tightened in anguish but the look on his own face had been one of horror. As quickly as her heart had hurt for herself it had in turn hurt for him.

The confusion, the horror, the self loathing had been written on his face as he realized what he had said, and she knew instantly he had not meant any of it. She had wanted so badly to take him in her arms, but before she could say anything to him he had run off, confused and needing time to regain himself.

All she could do now was wait, and hope.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun was now gone, however there was still light over the horizon. It was not enough though to hide the stars that were now out, nor was it enough to hold off the town's night lights which had turned on awhile ago. The air that had been so warm earlier had cooled again.

Ichigo felt the cool air go by as he stood in front of the gates to his home. Arms in his jacket pockets, he rotated and stretched his neck as he finally advanced forward and passed through the gates to the shrine.

"Ichigo", he heard a voice call out and immediately recognized it. He took in a breath.

"Yeah, dad?", he responded, turning in the direction his father's voice had emanated from.

His father stared back at him with his arms crossed. Though his father still held a serious expression he could see it wasn't the same stern expression he had been wearing earlier.

They continued to look at each for a moment, neither speaking.

Finally Ichigo shifted and he looked downward. "Dad, about earlier. I'm sorry".

Isshin's eyes widened slightly, not expecting Ichigo to make the first move like that. He acknowledged Ichigo's apology with a nod then spoke.

"We had some visitors earlier today", he said, and Ichigo found himself confused at the change in topic.

"The boy that you helped earlier and his friend came by. They had wanted to thank you for what you did."

Ichigo's eyes widened. "Asano came by today?"

Isshin nodded in affirmation. "They also explained to us exactly what happened earlier."

Ichigo jaw tightened as his eyes quickly darted downward before coming back up to watch his father.

"You're sisters and mother are happy to hear that you came to the boy's defense. From the way he looked it could have been a lot worse had you not stepped in when you did."

Ichigo blinked, did this mean his dad...

"Still, I'm not happy with how you dealt out that defense."

Ichigo closed his eyes. Maybe not.

Opening them, he looked at his father. "Dad, I am sorry about earlier. But about those guys, about what they were doing. About what they were going to do. I can't say that I'm sorry for what I did."

Isshin frowned, but before he could say anything Ichigo spoke again.

"I know what your thinking, that with my training I probably could have put them down easily." He then shrugged his shoulders and looked in the direction of the house. "Under other circumstances, I probably would have, but what they were doing. How they were doing it. Sometimes its best when you give them the right message the first time."

Isshin tilted his head, arms still crossed. "And if they don't get that message?"

"Then I do it again", Ichigo stated, looking at his father once more. "I will not stand by and allow others to do what they want when they want when I see it. I will not watch them bully those weaker than them because they can."

Isshin continued to look at his son who was looking at him eye to eye.

"It's what I've done. It's what I will do".

With that, Isshin turned away from Ichigo and held his arms akimbo and hunched over a bit.

Ichigo blinked, unsure if his dad was trying to hold in his anger.

Isshin, on the other hand, was doing his best not to break out into an ear to ear grin and cackle like an idiot. The boy was so serious, his expression, his vow, it was all he could do to keep it in and not slap his lap.

But beneath that, beneath the humor, he was also trying not to express the surge of pride that he felt well up as his son stood before him. He knew that if Ichigo could see the contortions he was going through now, any control of the situation he had would be lost.

However, no matter how proud he felt he still could not quite let him go scott free.

He got as much control as he could and crossed his arms again, but he still faced away from Ichigo. Looking upward, he spoke. "Ichigo. I'm happy that you apologized, but the people you really need to apologize to are inside. They've been worried sick about you, Ichigo."

"I'm sorry about that. Thank you, pop." Ichigo turned to leave, but Isshin spoke again.

"I'm not done yet. I will say that I am pleased that you are helping others but can't let you go completely considering the wounds they took as well."

He finally turned to face Ichigo. "Your punishment, Ichigo, is that you will be helping me at the clinic for the next week after school. You will also not be attending your martial arts classes either. You will be helping acclimate our new temp in that time".

Ichigo grimaced, clearly not happy at the verdict, but he held his mouth shut as much as he could. All things considered, he was getting off easy. Still, being punished for helping someone out irked at him.

Isshin then nodded in the direction of the home, signaling that he could go.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ichigo took another breath as he stood in front of the door to his parents' room. For the third time he found that he couldn't bring himself to knock on the door, retracting his hand each time he was about to knock.

Both of his sisters were in the bath, and that allowed him to make his way to the door uninterrupted. Once he arrived he began to contemplate exactly what he should be saying.

He held in another breath as he fought the butterflies in his stomach. Again, Tatsuki's words from earlier came to mind. 'No matter how bad it was, she'll forgive you, and I know you'll watch yourself better in the future'.

Steeling himself, he knocked on the door twice and slid it open. Stepping through, he turned around to slide the door shut.

"Ichigo", he heard his mother.

He turned around and saw her. He was for a moment grateful, that the anguish he saw earlier was now absent, but he again felt himself clench knowing that he was the one to do that to her. He blinked a few times, opened his mouth to try to to say something, then lowered his head and softly let out a breath.

He was about to raise his head and try again when he felt her arms encircle him, surprising him. Holding him to her, she rested her head on his chest. Ichigo himself began to wrap his arms around her as he found himself fighting to keep his eyes from watering, her gesture overwhelming him for a moment.

He returned the hug, his cheek resting on her head. He could smell the shampoo she used and began to relax a bit. When he found himself in control he spoke. "I'm... I'm sorry about earlier. About what I said."

"I know", she told him, her head still on his shoulders. "I know you didn't mean it".

"No, it's just that...", he stopped as he tried to express himself correctly. "I didn't mean it, but..." He held her a bit tighter. "You are my mother, but at the same time, I can't forget..."

"It's ok", she soothed. "I understand".

"I won't forget. I don't want to forget, but still..."

"I understand. Believe me, I do." She slightly pulled away so she could see him. "You are my son. You will always be my son. But I know that this part of you, this part of you that makes you whole has changed you. You are now as you should be, but this part of you isn't mine nor was it. It's I who should be apologizing to you, as part of me was selfishly hoping that...", she trailed off, not able to finish.

Ichigo stared at her, stunned at her confession. As confusing as it had been for him he never once thought she'd be going through something similar. While he had known she had not replaced his mother, Masaki, literally, he had indeed thought that he may have replaced her Ichigo. Though his memories and emotions had integrated with his own, and despite him trying to sort it out, he understood now that the boy she knew was essentially gone. That she was apologizing for it...

He pulled her back to him, again resting his face on her head, and they stayed that way for several minutes, him not knowing exactly what to say.

Finally they parted, and she smiled up at him, and he found himself smiling in return.

"There is something I did want to mention."

"Yes?", she looked at him expectantly.

"Earlier today, when I was fighting. I found myself moving better than I ever had. I noticed it this morning too, running to school. I've never had problems before, but comparing today to what I was, it's like I've become stronger than ever was."

Belldandy stood there, listening.

"I've never moved so fluidly, and I found myself doing things without even thinking. All out of reflex. When mom died, I stopped going to the dojo, but here, there was no reason to stop. I think that's why things went the way they did with those guys earlier. When I started fighting, I fought like I've always done. I also don't like holding back much, so when I did...

"You ended up hurting them far more than you would have otherwise", Belldandy completed.

Ichigo sheepishly looked away. "Maybe", he answered. "I can kinda get carried away at times."

"Ichigo, your father-"

"I already spoke with him, and he's already given me my punishment", he informed her. "I'm also going to tell you what I told him. I won't watch others being taken advantage of if I see it".

"I'm happy to hear it", she told him. "You will though, have to practice more until you get used to your strength, so that way you don't hurt somebody unnecessarily next time."

"Uh, yeah", he again looked sheepish in front of her.

They spoke for a few more minutes before hugging each other once more. With the day now over Ichigo felt the events that happened over the course of it finally catch up with him. Bidding his mother good night, he stopped to look at his sleeping brother before leaving the room.

In the hallway he had encountered his sisters, who were ecstatic that he was finally home. Karin had then kicked him in the shin for causing them to worry while Yuzu had hugged him before running off to find some ointment to apply after Karin kicked him.

Taking the ointment and all but promising not to do that again he had managed to make it to his room. He sat on his bed, one leg crossed under him while the other was over the edge. He held a hand to his head and yawned. He then rubbed his face with both hands and was about to fall back on his bed when a scent caught his nose. Sniffing, he then raised an arm and realized it was him. Realizing that he had been running around the entire day and had been in two fights he got up and grabbed his things, determined to take a quick shower.

Grabbing a towel he went to the washroom and yawned as he opened the door and closed it behind him. Walking in he then remembered that they had a guest over. Said guest currently had her back facing him and was bent over, apparently putting her clothes on.

It was at that point that Orihime Inoue realized that she wasn't alone and turned around.

'Oh crap', Ichigo thought, now awake.

Nice. B)

This chapter seemed a lot longer than previous ones, but the various points of view seemed to explain that,

It seems that Ichigo has gotten past the emotional issues that the wish caused, which is good because the plot can start advancing.

It was really interesting to see the emotional ties Ichigo has with Tatsuki and Orihime, and I'm looking forward to more development as time goes on.

Nice cliffhanger too. You know it's good because it makes me want to stab you. I think this could be one of the definitive moments in the Ichigo/Orihime relationship, since it could very well determine whether they see each other as friends with potential romantic feelings, or a family. Of course, that depends on how dressed Orihime is when Ichigo walks in, so it can be avoided if she was just about finished dressing. Then you just have that awkward moment.

Looking forward to the next chapter already, you bastard.

Is it wrong that my first thought reading this as Ichigo walked in on Orihime is "Bom chicka wow-wow?"

I just realized that Ichigo is going to be, over all, much stronger by the time we get to the start of canon, at the very least he will have better hand to hand, and faster.

You also have to take into account all the different, and new, aspects of himself that this Ichigo has, add this all up and I don't think Zangetsu is going to be the same, of that will even still be his/her name.

Very nice. I'm curious about who is his temp at the clinic you've been talking about. My bet is on Urd.

thirded but one question plagues me, when bell does get in touch with skuld and urd how will she explain skulds age, or should i say lack of it to the family. i mean urd is the kind of person who could be any age but skuld looks and acts like a 10 year old. taking into acount the what? 16 years??? that bell has spent being a mother with no contact with her divine half of the family, how will she explain away that she knows skuld, when in human term she should of not been there to know of her existance?

the only way i see a solution is if skuld is now older then in cannon

It's not unheard of to have an Aunt or uncle younger than their actual nieces and nephews. Rare but not unheard of. Especially if your grandmother got pregnant early in life and then had an accident on her forties, or if your grandfather was getting some younger tail later in life. It's strange but it can be explained away easily enough when people in Japan are too polite to really ask something that personal to begin with.

It was Stewie or Palpatine for me right now and frankly I went with the higher creepy factor for Stewie.

Victory is mine indeed. :evil3:

I loved Ichigo's personal resolution here. He's sorry for worrying his family, but he doesn't regret his actions(fight-wise) one bit. I'm really glad that harder part of him is there to stay, as it's just such a huge part of his character that it would feel really weird without it. He seems a bit nicer, as well. It's really interesting to see the two lives blend.

Belldandy acknowledging her own error on that front was nice. She kind of forgot that half of her son was now a confused kid still trying to work out what the hell just happened.

A spiritually renewed Ichigo walking face-first into awkward teenage embarrassment is fantastic, too. And on that note, Tatsuki vs Hormones(with genuine affection, but still) is a rather entertaining fight.

So yeah, I'm still enjoying this quite a bit.

I'll point out that you seem to have mixed Orihime's family and personal names up. Her family name is Orihime, and her personal name is inoue, not the other way around. ;)

Shouldn't be too hard to fix; just do a find-replace.

Sorry guy, but I do belive you may be a bit confused. Inoue is her family name and Orihime is her personal name.

Skuld has limited control over her appearance, if you recall. She can't quite make herself older as when she and Urd switched apparent ages, but she can grow a bit taller until she appears in her late teens.

Besides, Belldandy herself looks youthful, and it's not unheard of to see women who display an age MUCH LOWER than their real one. Hell, every Goddess counts in that sense.

Again...that gets me to the point that REALLY nags me......

Technically, neither of the three Kurosaki children its human on any sense.......Latent True-Blooded Shinigami for one side, and Latent Divine for the other. That means really freaky(and interesting) avenues of evolution for Ichigo and his younger sibilings. Once Urd&Skuld gets around, the Kami side of all the Kurosaki children, its likely to soon start to "awaken" given the Mana release all around.......

THAT will be a riot for the ages.......then Mara&Hild will start messing around......methinks....that Hild will find Ichigo utterly "delightful for teasing" :evil2: :evil2:  :cumdrool:

And.....WHY i'm thinking on Hild and Chad being related?? :sisi:

Interesting? More like: Epic curbstompage will ensue. Seriously, Mayuri may be a good scientist but his ethics are nonexistent.

And Skuld has morals?

MURDER-KUN.

That's all I'll say. The only thing stopping Skuld from going the Mayuri route are divine regulations, not her ethics. She has very few of those, if any.

Isshin's reeaaally gonna be on the lookout for that one. ;) :p
Oh yeah, he will. I mean, Skuld was borderline homicidal towards Keiichi for just being a bit too intimate with Belldandy. Isshin actually KNOCKED HER UP. Several times, in fact.

Isshin should count himself lucky if he has all his limbs still attached when Skuld finds out about that...

Well just read the four chapter we got on site here and of course I'm gonna have to give it :yay: two thumbs up. My inner self agrees :mmm:

I'm most interested in the differences between Shinigami and Gods, they are both have the word "god" attached to them but they also play two very different but essential roles in the world.

Could we eventually be seeing the birth if a "living" Shinigami? Perhaps Ichigo's soul will never have to leave his body!

... Hichigo as his angle :ph43r:
