Chapter 2

Yokota Air Base
Fussa, Greater Tokyo, Japan
October 19th, 2002
"I can't BELIEVE this!"
General Genma Takafuji, commander of all GDI forces in Japan, was not happy. Neither were his superiors in the Japanese government and GDI High Command in the US, for that matter. The Narita Incident was only hours old, and already he'd been chewed out by the Prime Minister of Japan, the President of the United States, Global Defense Initiative Overall Commander General Sheppard, and, as of a phone call ten minutes ago, his wife and her entire social club.
And now the shit would begin to flow downhill.
"First the bombing, then the news report, and now everyone in the Kanto is reporting Nod agents around every corner! What the hell is Nod doing here again, so soon after Sarajevo?! I thought we chased those fanatics out years ago!"
"Operations to drive out the Brotherhood's influence in Japan after the bombings three years ago were largely successful, General, but not foolproof." Colonel Keita Kuroi, General Takafuji's second-in-command, was formal and calm, long used to his commander's temper and occasional outbursts. The general was a respectable and competent man: a little shouting wasn't too unreasonable. "We don't believe any Nod agents managed to infiltrate during the war, but we could be wrong. Or this could've been one last gasp by whoever we didn't pick up after the original attacks."
General Takafuji grumbled a bit, leaning back in his seat. Four of the twenty Nod bombings that had kicked off the war between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod three years ago - the fifth, sixth, eleventh and eighteenth - had occurred in Japan, though most of the world had paid more attention to the attacks in Europe and the United States, such as the bombing of the Grain Trade Center in Vienna, Austria. In Japan it had been a month of hell, two of the attacks occurring simultaneously, the third a week later, and the final attack almost three weeks afterwards just as people had begun to return to their daily lives. And unlike the attacks in Europe, every single attack in Japan had been a suicide bomber, hitting densely populated areas for immense loss of life - all told, over four hundred Japanese citizens and dozens of foreign tourists had been killed in just four bombings.
And now, just as the memories had begun to fade... this.
"We must stop them, Keita. We can't let Nod run amok here in Japan."
"Yes sir."
"And what of the... other matter? Has it been confirmed?"
Col. Kuroi nodded gravely. "We've confirmed that a cargo crate from one of the recently landed flights went missing during the confusion, and traces of Tiberium have been detected within the cargo hold the crate was unloaded from."
General Takafuji closed his eyes and held his head in his hands. "Dear kami protect us... if what we've been hearing recently about Tiberium's effects are true-"
"I'm afraid they are." a third voice interrupted as a young woman with short brown hair and a somewhat scraggly looking Japanese man with enough stubble on his face to qualify for a beard and black hair that desperately needed to be cut entered the room. "Apologies for barging in-"
"Nonsense, nonsense!" Genma leaped to his feet and bowed, Col. Kuroi following his lead. "It's a pleasure to have you here, Dr. Mobius."
Doctor Sydney Mobius returned the bow before taking her seat, the other man remaining standing behind her. "Thank you, general, but my arrival here may be something of a mixed blessing - my father's recent research indicates some... worrying new information on Tiberium. The crystals are more dangerous than we may think, and we cannot allow them to spread to Japan. It's effects on the ecology and population of Okinawa have been decimating enough."
General Takafuji nodded, frowning. "Reports out of Okinawa have been kept under wraps by the Prime Minister and Parliament, but I've heard bad things."
"Very bad things, general."
He grunted an affirmative, looking away for a moment. When he turned back, he glanced at the bespectacled man behind the younger Mobius. "Ah, I don't believe we've been introduced, Mr...?"
"Forgive me, general, it slipped my mind." Sydney stood and gestured to the man behind her, who chucked and mumbled something about not typically being very forgettable. "This is one of my father's assistants, Japan's current leading expert on Tiberium."
"Ah, you overstate things a bit Dr. Sydney," the man smiled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his head with one hand, "I only transferred over from the archaeology department last year. A pleasure to meet you, General Takafuji - my name is Seta Noriyasu..."

"Family? FAMILY? How dare you call me that! You bastard! You have NO RIGHT!" Haruka was nearly screaming now, striding forward to press the barrel of her Beretta into Keitaro's temple. "No right, you butcher! You murdered your own sist-"
Keitaro lashed out, lightning fast, and drove his elbow full force into Haruka's face, ripping her pistol out of her grasp with his free hand, then clubbing her in the back of the head with his Commando Elite as she stumbled forward, blood spurting from her nose. Motoko, no longer covered by Keitaro's weapon immediately dropped to retrieve her sword and rose, prepared to attack - only to be forced to lower the blade as Haruka's body sailed into her own courtesy of a fierce kick into the older woman's stomach, sending them both tumbling to the floor.
Keitaro, now in possession of both guns, turned toward them, and the assembled women stepped back in shock as they saw that his eyes had shifted from brown to a fierce and faintly glowing green.
'What is...' Naru trembled.
Motoko's eyes narrowed as she struggled to rise without injuring the 'A demon...?'
Kaolla recognized it immediately, and darted her tongue across her lips to catch an errant line of drool as she realized just what she was looking at.
'ReGenesis!'
Keitaro blinked twice, his eyes returning to a normal color, and snarled.
"Do not blame me for what happened to Kanako, Haruka." his eyes darted to Kitsune, who gasped and trembled for a moment, and then back to his cousin. "And don't blame Ms. Konno for it either. Never again. Do you understand?"
Haruka struggled to her feet, nearly stumbling as the world seemed to swirl drunkenly around her. "You-"
"Had nothing to do with her decision."
"You helped!"
"She asked."
"You should've stopped her!"
All emotion faded from Keitaro's face.
".....I wanted to."
