Just a thread for classic games you really enjoyed. Tell us about some of your old faves, maybe some good parts and bad. And try not to get the generic Mario/Sonic/Final Fantasy/etc.

I'll start with...

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Some of you may know of this game from it's Wii VC release, but those who don't...

Published for both the SEGA Genesis and the Super Nintendo, this was a game in which you fought off legions of monsters and the undead to save innocent lives. The goal of each level was to survive while grabbing every living person you could before they were caught and killed, made all the more difficult by the fact that they all seemed completely oblivious to the world ending around them and went about their business (Cheerleading, playing on a trampoline, grilling, etc.) while hordes of the undead shambled up to them.

You play as either Zeke or Julie and use a wide array of weapons, random junk improvised into weapons (a six-pack is apparently pretty volitile), magic potions and ancient artifacts (Whatever you do, don't look into the light) to fight off your classic monsters, from Zombies and Mummies to possessed dolls and chainsaw wielding clones of Jason Vorheese, battling through 60+ levels

A bit of an odd story for me. I liked this game a lot, despite a young fear of zombies (Curse you, Return of the Living Dead, and your nigh-unkillable zombies). I had the Genesis version, so I missed out on the flamethrower, but it didn't matter as I couldn't make it past Level 5 because the Jason's always killed me, but I still had a lot of fun with it, it's an oddly upbeat horror game with a simple set-up.

Wario Land I guess. The first game of its type that I played, and also the first game of its type that I realized I could cheat with (hitting select a lot from the pause screen) for all sorts of bonuses. Sure I had no idea who this guy was or what he wanted or why he was fighting a genie, but it was fun.

Blaster Master. Driving around a Metroid like landscape in a little car with a canon on it. Sometimes you had to get out and run around either on a top down perspective maze or in a side scrolling mode similar to when you were in the car.

Clay Fighter. A fighting game with claymation characters. A psychotic clown, an Opera singer, an Elvis Impersonator, a man made of taffy, a blob of clay, an evil snowman, and a ghost with a pumpkin head. Classy.

UN Squadron. A bullet hell side scroller for the Snes.

Cool Spot. A Genesis sidescroller featuring a now retired 7up mascot. It was actually a decent platformer.

Yo! Noid. See above, only Domnios Pizza instead of 7up.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Not the arcade game. That super hard bastard that gave Ninja Gaiden a run for it's money in difficulty on the NES.

Combat. If you had an Atari 2600, you know what this is. Shoot a friend in a tank or plane on various boards. Probably the best launch title for the system. The first true 'party' game.

Space Invaders. I wasted many hours with a PC edition of this game in the very early 80s.

Aliens vs. Predator. The only game worth playing on the Atari Jaguar.

Baulder's Gate 1 + 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 + 2. Because.

Diablo II. Diablo was okay, but Diablo II is the only one that really matters.

Decent II. Decent was the first game to give people motion sickness by utilizing true 3d movement. The second game was the best in the series though.

Wing Commander. Space Combat done right. Fly around in open space blowing up other ships and avoiding asteroids.

Full Throttle. For the lulz.

Grim Fandango. See above.

Monkey Island. See above again.

Maniac Mansion. Need I say it again?

Lemmings. Had it for PC but more commonly known as a Snes or Genesis title. Guilde little lemmings to the exit and keep them from horrible death.

Worms. Control a team of worms with various ordinance to cause another team of worms to die horrible and hilarious deaths.

Mechwarrior 4:Mercenaries. A great series overall, run around in a giant robot shooting other giant robots. First mech simulator. 4 was the one I played the most though.

Star Wars:Dark Forces 2. First game to give you a lightsaber that wasn't just a screw attack rip off.

Thief II. The original was great, but 2 was better. 3 was meh. Sneak around stealing stuff from rich people in a steampunk world.

System Shock. One of the first survival horror games ever, and also one of the best.

Deus Ex. Because running around being a cybernetic badass thwarting an evil corporation is epic.

Tie Fighter. Because X-wing is for rebel scum.

Xevious/Raiden/Ikaruga. Bullet hell bliss, pick one. Though, Ikaruga will make you froth at the mouth and rage the most.

I could post to this thread all day and still not scratch the surface.

Another Genesis Game-

Dynamite Headdy

A fun little plat-former with a puppet/stage theme. You play as Headdy, a puppet who seems kinda like Rayman's neck-less cousin in looks, who is able to detach his head and shoot it to attack, able to latch onto certain objects to climb or switch it out with other heads for special effects (Invincibility, stronger hits, invisibility, energy fields, etc.).

Despite the fact that I was never able to actually beat the game, it was a very fun title I would suggest to anyone who likes fun, imaginative platformers with some interesting designs.

As I remember, it's available on the Wii virtual console.
