Shinji Ikari was wondering if it was a good idea to invite his two classmates along on this trip to meet the new Evangelion pilot.

The classmates in question, Touji and Kensuke, had spent a great deal of time ogling Misato Katsuragi. In fact, Touji had mentioned that his hat was one that had been bought specifically for this trip.

If Misato had noticed, she had mentioned it. Instead, the purple-haired woman had displayed indifference to the attempts at flirting that she was getting from the two hormonal boys.

Inwardly though, Misato was revelling in the attention. æStill got it,Æ she thought, allowing herself a small smile.

It was then that the pilot announced that they were approaching the UN Pacific fleet.

Kensuke zoomed in on his video camera, hoping to get some good footage of the ships.

ôWow!ö he gushed as he started to identify the ships that came into view. ôThatÆs the Over the Rainbow! ItÆs a pre-Impact nuclear-powered carrier!ö

ôThatÆs fascinating,ö Touji replied, rolling his eyes at the giddy words of his friends.

Misato radioed the CIC of the Over the Rainbow. ôThis is Captain Misato Katsuragi, weÆre here to take charge of the Evangelion and its pilot. Do we have permission to land?ö

ô¼Permission granted. The Captain wishes to speak with you in person.¼ö

The purple-haired woman let out a sigh. æWhatÆs Asuma done now to upset people now?Æ ôAcknowledged.ö

As the NERV VTOL landed on the deck of the Over the Rainbow, ToujiÆs hat blew off, the wind carrying it away from him.

Shinji was slightly amused by the way his friend was scurrying after his hat. It reminded him of a visual comedy sketch. So much so, that he half expected Touji to kick it away from himself.

As the tracksuit clad youth was about to dive onto his red cap, a foot appeared in his field of vision, trapping the errant hat on the metal surface.

ôHey! What gives?!ö

ôJust stopping your hat from falling into the ocean. YouÆre welcome,ö a male voice replied.

Touji looked up to see a boy smirking at him.

The boy had red hair, pale skin, bright blue eyes and an air of confidence that bordered on arrogance.

ôWho are you?ö

ôAsuma Langley Sohryu, pilot of Evangelion Unit-02,ö the smirking boy greeted. ôAre you the Third Child, Shinji Ikari?ö

ôNo, IÆm Touji Suzuhara,ö Touji replied, snatching his hat from under the foot of this arrogant person.

ôThatÆs a relief,ö Asuma said honestly. ôIÆd feel bad using someone who can pilot as a meat-shield.ö

ôHello, Asuma,ö Misato waved. She gestured to the timid looking boy to her right. ôThis is Shinji Ikari, heÆs the pilot of Unit-01.ö

The redhead walked up to the Third Child to get a better idea of who heÆd be working with. ôSo, this is the famous Shinji Ikari, eh?ö

Asuma cast a critical eye over his fellow pilot. Shinji was shorter, scrawnier and judging by the way he was standing, rather self-conscious.

ôHardly the stuff of legends.ö

ôNot everyone is blessed with your confidence, Asuma,ö Misato replied, rolling her eyes.

ôI worked hard to get as good as I am, Misato.ö The redhead looked at the two boys Shinji had arrived with. They looked to be of a similar age to him and Shinji. ôLet me guess, you guys are classmates, right?ö

ôYes,ö Shinji answered.

ôWell then, letÆs get inside. IÆd hate for someone to fall into the water.ö

Asuma was surprised to see MisatoÆs reaction to his guardian.

ôYou!ö the purple-haired beer lover declared, pointing angrily at the unshaven man standing in the doorway.

ôOf course itÆs me, Misato-chan,ö Ryoji Kaji said, flashing a winning smile. ôOur fates are intertwined!ö

Misato shuddered at the poor attempt at poetic charm. ôIÆd say weÆre going to the mess for some food, but IÆm not sure I can eat anything right now.ö

ôIÆm hungry though,ö Asuma said. ôAnd I think Shinji could do with eating something. He looks like a stiff breeze would carry him off.ö

ôFine, letÆs get going. IÆd hate to be blamed for you guys being malnourished,ö the NERV captain sighed.

Kaji stepped away from the door and directed a theatrical bow towards Misato.

ôYeah, yeah, keep your distance, Mr. Grabby-Hands.ö

ôYou wound me with such harsh words, Misato-chan.ö

ôIÆll wound you by breaking your arms with my bare hands if you try to cop a feel,ö Misato warned.

Kaji blanched slightly. ôThen I shall keep a respectful distance.ö

Asuma looked on with interest. Normally, KajiÆs flirtatious actions would have garnered at least a smile from a woman. Misato, however, seemed to be made of sterner stuff.

Given that Kaji had told Asuma that theyÆd dated, the redhead discounted MisatoÆs sexuality as being a reason for the cold attitude.

æHe didnÆt say what terms they parted on, so perhaps sheÆs still upset at him?Æ

At the table, Kaji had decided to tease Misato about the fact that she was living with Shinji.

ôSo, Shinji-kun, is Misato-chan still as wild in bed as I remember? The things we used to do when we were dating...ö

Misato spluttered with indignation at the implication.

ôYouÆve not changed, Misato-chan,ö the unkempt man smiled wistfully.

ôHow do you know my name?ö Shinji asked, somehow able to block out the sordid insinuation about him and his guardian.

ôItÆs no wonder I know you. YouÆre famous in my circle û the Third Child who used Eva in combat without training,ö Kaji praised.

Shinji looked down, uncomfortable with being the centre of attention. ôI... I got lucky.ö

ôLucky enough to save the day several times. Look, IÆve got to go, so see you later.ö

Later on, Kaji caught up with Asuma.

ôSo, what do you think of Shinji Ikari?ö

ôYou sure heÆs the one who saved Tokyo-3? He looks like he couldnÆt fight his way out of a wet paper bag,ö the redhead said dismissively.

ôAppearances can be deceptive,ö Kaji said, looking out over the ocean. ôShinji piloted Unit-01 with no training. In fact, the first time he got into it, he had a synchronisation ratio of over 40 percent.ö

ôHow? Seriously, how did he do that?ö

ôYouÆre asking me about the workings of the Evas, Asuma, thatÆs not my area of expertise.ö

ôYou know, you never did tell me what your æarea of expertiseÆ is,ö Asuma said, casting a glance at his guardian.

It was true. Kaji had often evaded questions about the specifics of his job; sometimes with misdirection and even lies. But the most effective way to distract Asuma was with the offer of teaching him about girls.

Asuma Langley Sohryu might have been a genius who had graduated college at the age of 13, but that didnÆt mean that he had much clue about the fairer sex. His first attempts at approaching girls had gotten him laughed at.

The public humiliation had hurt him. It had made him feel weak, insignificant, worthless. Almost as bad as the time heÆd rushed home to tell his mother about his selection as an Evangelion pilot...

æNo,Æ the redhead told himself. æIÆm not thinking about that now. I need to focus on something else.Æ

ôYou want the truth, Asuma?ö

The teenager blinked. ôYes.ö

ôThe truth is I canÆt give you any details.ö

ôWhat?ö Asuma demanded.

ôI canÆt give you any details about what I do,ö Kaji repeated. ôI donÆt want to put you in danger, thatÆs why I never told you anything.ö

ôFine, IÆll let that go. But there I do want to know what the deal with you and Misato is.ö

Kaji noticed the teasing smile on his wardÆs face. ôItÆs... complicated, to say the least. Misato-chan and I dated when we were in college. We didnÆt part on good terms.ö

Asuma nodded. ôThough, judging by her reaction, you two did some freaky things... Care to share?ö

Kaji winced. Asuma was a smart person, but in order to keep him from getting too curious about certain things, a few advanced sex education lessons had been employed to keep him otherwise occupied.

Some of these lessons had been accounts of sexual episodes, including the explanation and demonstration of certain techniques.

While it had been effective in keeping the redhead out of his professional affairs, Misato would have described it as ôcreating a perverted monsterö.

æNot that Misato-chan was as pure as the driven snow...Æ

ôOnly if I can tell her about your antics, Asuma...ö

ô...ö the redhead paused, his cheeks burning brightly as he considered some of his more embarrassing actions. ôFine, you can keep your sordid past with my commanding officer a secret.ö

I think you can see where this one differs from canon.

I'm trying to crank out some more, but I am lazy and I don't know what other changes this makes from the original series.

Soulless German Ginger... a bishounen with an attitude? And will Hikari have the hots for him? :p

Wonder if he'll try to make Shinji his <s>bitch</s> underling or will eventually find out something to realize some kind of bromance? At least to piss off Touji :snigger:

Keep up the good work Raa

Because I can.

Because Italy scored a try in the Six Nations.

Because it sounds good.

Pick a reason.

Asuma had tracked Shinji down and brought the hapless youth along with him to show him the production Evangelion.

ôHuh, itÆs red...ö

ôAnd why not?ö

ôI... didnÆt mean anything bad, I...ö

ôCalm down, Shinji, you worry too much. At least your blindingly obvious observation proves you have relatively normal colour vision,ö Asuma said, his voice teasing the nervous boy slightly. ôRed is a good colour. In fact, some people think that red vehicles go faster.ö

ôReally?ö Shinji asked, curious as to whether it did or not.

ôSome people really think that, but thereÆs no evidence that a red paint job makes your car go any faster.ö

ôWhat kind of people think that would make your car go faster?ö

ôAn idiot,ö Asuma replied flatly.

Any further derisory comments on the general intelligence of people were cut off by the sound of an alarm.

ôWhat the...?ö the two pilots uttered in unison.
