I was browsing through the Idea Thread... and this jumped at me.
So... I decided to put fingers to the keyboard and this is what came out.
As always, the idea is open to anyone that can really put it to good use.

I don't read this fandom often, so I might be repeating an old idea, but still it has been bugging me.
It's an AU I got while watching Welcome to NHK. Essentially, Keitaro as a hikikomori. He had plans to go to Todai, but dropped them when he became socially withdrawn (for reasons I haven't fully thought out). His parents are fed up/ashamed of his lifestyle, so they kick him out.
Hina's a little more helpful and empathetic, even if she doesn't entirely understand it. She tries to use Hinata Sou as incentive because it's essentially a job where he never has to experience the outside world. However, the price of inheritance is getting into Tokyo U, so he has to mingle with the outside world while going to cram school.
Additionally, his relationship with the tenants would all depend on how socially withdrawn he is. My initial idea was that he hides in his room most of the time, so the girls barely ever see him at first. As time goes on, he would make more regular appearances as he slowly starts to overcome his social phobia.
I never had any incentive to write any Love Hina fanfiction before, but this was the first idea that wouldn't leave me alone so I figured that I'd share it.

Coming out of his shell.

It had been a hard life for him the last eight years. His study skills and focus had improved, he had ranked high enough to enter most universities in Japan the past two attempts, even some of the elite schools had sent scholarship offers.
"Yeah, it would really help me with the commute to the Seminar."
". . ."
Except for his chosen school, denied entry twice, not appearing on any of the the accepted examinees lists; and after going over his self evaluations, probably missing the cut off by a few points.
"I... just... don't want to bother people."
". . ."
He knew that to get into the most prestigious school in Japan would take certain sacrifices, considering his less than stellar school grades, but by then he didn't mind, he could only do his best effort and not take any shortcuts.
"Are you sure your tenants aren't going to mind my schedule?"
". . ."
Although it was a sore spot for him, he could count the number of friends he had on one hand, and have fingers left over. Following his dream so feverishly had made him a bit of a pariah.
"What do you mean 'the girls won't mind'?... that makes me sound like I'm some kinda perv"
". . ."
With the past two exam failures and his stubborn need to make good on a long standing promise, he had felt he needed to lessen the worry of his parents.
"I'll give it a try then... Mom will be ecstatic knowing I got a job."
". . ."
Thanking his lucky stars, his eternal supporter had decided to call and check up on him today, giving him both the biggest opportunity of his lifetime and his second biggest challenge.
"I love you too, and thanks again" *CLICK*
He had always been a loner due to his fascination with Tokyo University, he always spoke about it as if it were a mystical place where dreams came true. Thanks to this he was always teased by older kids as he was growing up, but he took the jeers in stride. About six years ago most of his teachers had stopped noticing him, his grades were above average but never stood out.
"Well, that takes care of finding a place to stay AND a part time job..."
First he started skipping classes to go study in the library, eventually missing complete days. By the time he entered High School, he was attending the bare minimum amount of days required to graduate to the next year. Thanks to this attitude, he was unable to make new friends and eventually felt stress from both family and school; eventual bullying from his peers finally put the proverbial nail in the coffin, Keitaro Urashima had became socially withdrawn, a Hikkikomori.
"I could never deny any of her requests... and because of that she's always been sweet on me; heck, according to Dad, I am her favorite."
The Urashimas were pretty much a nuclear family, Father, Mother, two children. His parents were always supportive, even if they tried to 'nudge him in the áright direction'. His younger sister, currently traveling with and supporting their grandmother, did her best to make her Onii-chan proud of her.
"I guess I should start packing, and thank Mom and dad for putting up with me for so long."
Although he just couldn't help but feel ashamed, everyone else in his family was active, social and outgoing; he would rather stay in his room read his text books, practice drawing, watch anime and post stuff on internet boards when he wasn't busy helping his father in the back of their bakery.
