Company of Heroes

This is for discussing the RTS game "Company of Heroes": favourite missions, strategies, mods you'd like to see, etc.

In my case, I'd like to see a mod based on British (or Commonwealth) forces. The units would, naturally, stay the same for the most part, but use different models and voices.

For instance, the unit list might be:

Infantrymen (Essentially the same as Riflemen, but instead of Tommy Guns and Garands, they'd have Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifles and Sten guns).

The Parachute Regiment

Royal Engineers

Greenjackets (Snipers)

Mortar teams

Bren LMG teams

Medics

VEHICLES

Bren Carrier/Jeep

Staghound Armoured Car

Churchill Tank

Churchill Crocodile (They mounted the flamethrower on the hull and carried their fuel in a armoured trailer)

Sherman Firefly (Standard Sherman fitted with a 17-Pounder Anti-Tank gun)

QF 17-Pounder AT gun

"Kangaroo" (Basically a Tank chassis with the turret removed and turned into a troop carrier)

QF 25-Pounder Artillery gun.

I've even created a fictional regiment for the Brits: "The Queens' Own Regiment of Guards".

I want to get the game, but I don't have any money right now. Maybe for Christmas. It's got the same specs as Dawn of War, right? And are the Germans playable?

In Skirmish Mode, yes.

The Campaign is of "Able" and "Fox" Companies, from D-Day (Omaha Beach and Behind the lines the night before), to the German breakout at the Falaise Gap.

Company of Heroes is a great game, but I never did get too much time to play it. Probably because of Dark Crusade, but never mind that...

It's a bit taxing on my machine, but of course. The graphics for the game are amazing. I swear, some parts look more like something out of an FPS than an RTS.

If I had more time, I'd play some more.

Erm. It's more graphically taxing than Dawn of War? How much more? I don't want my computer to explode in my face if I get it and install it.

Specs are about the same, but make sure your graphics card is updated. If it isn't, the models might not appear in game.

Depends on whether you run Dawn of War at the highest settings and how well it runs.

But, as my experience goes, Dawn of War has nothing on Company of Heroes graphically. My machine, a 1.8 Ghz AMD Athlon 64, with a 256mb Radeon X850PRO, and a gig of dual channeled RAM, runs Dawn of War just fine on high. For Company of Heroes, my machine struggles a fair bit. Frame rate's a bit uneven, a bit sluggish at times, stuff like that.

Personally, I'd say Company of Heroes is a much more graphically demanding game than Dawn of War. Just take a look at some of the screenshots - real world reflections, high res textures, all the AA and good stuff - a more realistic looking game overall, and thus, more demanding.

Feel free to give it a try, however. Company of Heroes is a great game. You might get away with running on low quality, but that's up to you.

I can turn most of DoW's settings on high and do alright, but some settings like environment texturing and shadows have to be turned on the lowest settings (or, in the case of shadows, off completely) or the game'll crash.

What I'd like to see are Pacific war mods....what's WWII without the Japanese and the Americans (plus British Allies, off course) duking it out in the Pacific?

Plus, marine units! We can't have WWII without battleships and whatnot!

Oh, and DarkKnightGafgar-san, I really suggest looking up the game's minimum specs before buying it. BTB just got it and it really did explode in his face. That was painful. HL2 ran just fine on our com so we felt a bit confident at the time. Imagine the shock.

but we got the com upgraded right after and we kind of ended up playing F.E.A.R. for most of the time. Would you call that irony?

Well, they did sort of have a battleship in the game. On the Cherbourg mission, the USS Texas could be called for fire-support.

Yes, but otherwise, it wasn't that controllable. Besides, the artillery support was just your generic off-map artillery support. I have yet to find an RTS game with ok sea battles. I know Empire Earth and it's sequel were nearing average-ish. Any suggestions anyone? Otherwise....wait for a mod...sigh....

Really? I'll go check it out then. Thanks for the heads-up.

Oh...and another thing. Irish and Scottish Brigades!

Well, maybe in skirmish mode, you could select, aside from the "Queens' Own Regiment of Guards", you could select, say, "The London Irish" Regiment, or "The Black Watch" Highlander unit.

Which begs the question....are there really any mods for the game out there?

Anyone know where to find any?

And David Alan-san...this is completely off-topic but I'm starting to put Gimli's face to your name. This is a good example of how forums oggles people's brains. I've already started to relate DarkKnightGafgar-san's name to keyboards and error screens too. What the?
