A Prologue

'Ya know... This kinda sucks.'

It was a long battle.

'Damn, but what's gonna happen to me now?'

Things didn't go so well.

'I still haven't reached my goal! I'm not ready to die yet!'

Sometimes, you don't get a choice.

'... Well, I guess there ain't much more for me to do... I already failed the mission. I just wish...'

And with that, Uzumaki Naruto died.

1234567890

It was during the Sasuke Retrieval Mission.

Fight after fight, Naruto left a teammate behind, to deal with a foe that was probably superior.

Finally, he made it to Sasuke.

Words couldn't convince the Uchiha to return, so Naruto decided fists would have to be good enough.

Down at the wire, after curse seal activations and drawing on the Kyuubi, the two reared back, ready to lay the final blow.

Only this time, instead of aiming for his chest... Sasuke hit Naruto's stomach.

Right at the top of the seal.

Most would be terrified that this would release the Kyuubi.

But the seal is just the gateway that leads to the portion of Naruto's soul that the Kyuubi was placed in.

Instead, damaging the seal, as Sasuke did, cut off the Kyuubi's ability to reach out into Naruto's body.

Cutting off his regeneration.

Kabuto arrived, and picked up Sasuke's body.

But Naruto?

Naruto died.

'But, I've found... Death is really only the beginning.'

1234567890

'I don't quite know what I was expecting death to be like... But it certainly wasn't this...'

Naruto found himself not minding being a ghost... He could fly around, which was a lot of fun.

However... It was kind of sad, watching Kakashi find his body. The man just look so downcast, that Naruto actually started feeling a little loved.

He even planned on following Kakashi back to Konoha, too.

Before, that is, he was interrupted.

"Ahem. You are Uzumaki Naruto, correct?"

Naruto stopped, midfloat.

'Someone... Someone can see me?'

He turned to face where the voice came from, and was pleasantly shocked.

Shocked to see a woman, dressed in a long black robe, floating in the air behind him.

"You can see me? And yeah, I'm Naruto. Who are you?"

The girl drew herself up. She was fairly short, but still a head taller then Naruto. She was, Naruto noted, quite attractive, in a refined sort of way. A pair of oval glasses perched on an angular face, and she carried a large book.

She answered, rather primly. "My name is Fukutaicho Ise Nanao, of the 8th Division of Gotei 13... and I'm here to send you to Soul Society."

1234567890

'I never knew death was so complicated...'

Naruto had immediately begun firing questions at the girl, after her introduction.

"What's Soul Society? What are the Gotei 13? How can you see me?"

So Nanao began to patiently explain.

She told Naruto what Soul Society was ('It's where the souls of good people go to, when a Shinigami performs konso on them. Konso is the act of sending a soul on its way.'). She explained the basics of what the 13 Divisions did. She even explained how she could see Naruto.

Because Nanao knew this was a delicate case... She had been sent on this specific konso for a reason.

After all, it would take at least a master of Kido on the level of a Fukutaicho to ensure that the Kyuubi no Kitsune was sent to Hell.

After some deliberation, she was chosen to be sent on this specific cleansing... She was to ensure that the consciousness of the Kyuubi was to be sent to Hell, while ensuring enough of it's reishi remained with Naruto to ensure that the Kyuubi was not able to power it's way out of hell.

The Elemental Countries were just one of the areas that the Shinigami patrolled, though due to the abundance of Chakra users, there were exceptionally few Hollows roaming. Most were in control enough of their internal energies to fight the Hollow Transformation long enough for a Shinigami to arrive...

But those that didn't... Well, they spawned the Hollows, that after building up as Gillian, would become known as the biju.

Because there was such a huge abundance of energy in most everything, the Elemental Countries were a veritable buffet for a Hollow. Luckily, the Elemental Countries were located quite far from any gates to Hueco Mundo, making it hard for a Hollow to get there unimpeded. Most didn't even know it existed, and those that did tended to be killed on the Journey.

So ensuring that the Kyuubi would be unable to break free from Hell, and possibly alert the Hollow population to the presence of such rich eating, was of high priority.

After patiently answering all of Naruto's questions (a patience she had developed from dealing with her new captains... advances), she explained to him what she was going to do.

"Naruto... I need to remove part of the Kyuubi from you. I need you to relax, and not interrupt me. Just stay still, and this should be over quickly."

Naruto was embarrassed... Even as a ghost, he found he could still blush.

Standing around without a shirt in front of a pretty older girl (not that Naruto knew exactly how much older then Nanao was... He just knew she looked a couple years older) would do that to your average 13 year old boy.

Especially when she had her hands on your stomach.

In fact, it felt so weird, that Naruto began to twitch. It felt kind of ticklish, now that he thought about it.

Nanao opened up a gate to Hell.

This caused Naruto to start twitching even more.

Then Nanao moved her hands a little. She was actually moving the Kyuubi out of the seal right now, but Naruto didn't know that.

All he knew was she was tickling him now.

He couldn't help himself... He began to laugh.

And screwed Nanao up.

"Oh no!"

There was a bright flash of light.

The gate disappeared.

At first, Nanao thought it was just her imagination, and that nothing was wrong.

She could tell that the Kyuubi's mind was gone... He had been fighting her the whole way through the process.

She began exploring the remainders of the broken seal with her reishi. After finding no trace of the Kyuubi, she was satisfied. There was a whole lot more of the Kyuubi's reishi floating around in Naruto then she had planned on leaving him, but that wasn't a problem.

But then she tried to pull away.

And found that a portion of her reishi was stuck. Caught up somehow in the seal. She could pull her hands away, and everything felt fine... But a portion of her reishi, however small, seemed to be stuck behind on something in the seal.

So she decided that she would cast a minor destruction kido on that aspect of the seal.

Only to get entangled worse.

After two more failed attempts, she decided to give up on it. She wasn't physically attached to the kid, or anything... But part of her energies seemed to be.

She stopped when she did, when she realized that she had gotten so entangled, that it seemed she could utilize some of the Kyuubi's reishi, too.

"... That's not good."

Before Naruto could ask, Nanao reached into her sleeve, and poked Naruto in the forehead with the butt of her sword.

As Naruto disappeared... Nanao felt herself disappearing, too.

As she feared she would.

Well, I got the idea of a Naruto/Nanao matchup in my head the other day, and tonight, I decided to give it a try. I'm planning on making it a humor/romance/action kinda deal, focusing on the interaction between Naruto and Nanao.

Nanao's poking around the seal caused it to mistakenly clamp down on her. Becuase it was broken from the Chidori that killed Naruto, it wasn't able to percieve that Nanao was a Shinigami, and therefore allowed to screw with it. The first thing they're gonna do is find the guy who the Yondaime summoned up to begin with.

The implications of what happened is that, for the moment, Nanao's reishi is tied up in Naruto. It's freely there for her use... She just has to be near Naruto to use it. She can also tap into the Kyuubi's chakra that's there... Something that the accident ended up leaving far more of it then she expected.

With such huge reiatsu, Naruto will practically have to become a Shinigami. But since he's now sorta tied to Nanao, he won't be able to attend the Academy the way a normal person would. He'll end up taking private lessons from her, or something... Something that Nanao, who is apparently a highly studious person, will be able to handle.

This will lead to a lot of Naruto/Shunsui interaction, which will solidly land in the 'humerous' category.

This is all a while before Bleach starts... Naruto will be trained before Ichigo shows up.

The reason I'm putting this in the Bleach section is because it's going to be more Bleach then Naruto. I'd also like some clarification on the correct term for the spiritual energy they use in Bleach... I used Reishi, as that's what I saw on wiki, but I doubt it's right. I'm pretty sure reiatsu just is for your spiritual presence. Specifics here would be useful. Ideas for names would be cool, too.

Thoughts?

I love how your using Nanoa instead of the more commonly used girls. Reishi works when you use it since I don't think they get anymore specific than talking about their reiatsu(spiritual pressure).

Pleasantly original. A very underused pairing and I can honestly say I've never read a story with reishi entanglement, or however you want to call it. I look forward to more.

How will this change interact with the inner workings of Nanao's Zanpakuto?

Ike

Well, we don't know much about Nanao's Zanpakuto (the only things I could find was that it was small, and she seemed to store it in her sleeve).

So, anything I say about it will be something that I've had to make up.

With that in mind, and the fact that she is listed as a Kido Master, I'd imagine she'd have a Zanpakuto that reflects that. Something more along the lines of Kira's or Tousen's, that has a specific effect instead of elemental power or physical upgrades (like Toushiro's or Ichigo's).

Now, being a Vice Captain means she has a Shikai. Her character seems to suggest that her Zanpakuto would have a personality similar to hers (most other peoples seem the same way), too. I'll probably give her one that works by binding her opponents somehow, as that's the most notable Kido that comes to mind that doesn't involve blowing something up.

With her tie to Naruto, and more notably access to the Kyuubi's chakra/reishi, that won't necessarily change. She'd still have the same Zanpakuto. However, I'm thinking that it will let her access new attacks (similar to the way that, say, Urahara has two differnet Shikai techniques).

As for Naruto, I'm not sure what route I'd go. For sure, he will NOT have a Zanpakuto that revolves around ninjutsu, or the Kyuubi. Nor will he have some uberpowerful dragon.

He'll probably have something that reflects an aspect of his character... Either his trickster nature or his determination. If its the former, it'd be something along the lines of what Aizen claimed his shikai was... Confusing people with mist. Not quite that, but it would involve confusion.

If it was the latter, it would involve forming some kind of shield, perhaps similar to the ones you see in Tenchi (not the lighthawk wings, but the paneled shields that Yosho uses).

And I think I'll go with 'Tangled in Death', Kuopiofi... That sounds pretty good :D.

"... That's not good."

Before Naruto could ask, Nanao reached into her sleeve, and pulled out her sword. She poked Naruto in the forehead with the butt of her sword.

As Naruto disappeared... Nanao felt herself disappearing, too.

As she feared she would.

1234567890

"What the hell? Was that konso?"

Naruto appeared, in what looked to be a densely populated town.

People didn't even seem to give him a second glance, just going about their business. As if it was completely normal for a confused stranger to appear in their midst.

Which, on later thought, it probably was.

"We are in the 21st district of Rukongai."

"Oh, Nanao, you came with me? I thought you said you'd be sending me along by myself?"

Nanao sighed.

"Well, Naruto... Things have changed. Something went wrong with the seal... You're going to have to come with me to Seireitei, where we can have someone else examine it."

"What's the problem? The... The Kyuubi still isn't in there, is he?"

"No... But it seems that, well... It doesn't matter. Let's be on our way now."

Naruto was confused by Nanao's manner. He had never really met a girl who acted as she did. Most of the girls he knew lived in extremes, whether it be Sakura or Hinata. Sakura's moodswings and Hinata's pathological shyness were nothing at all like Nanao's prim and proper manner.

She acted like she expected Naruto to comply with everything she said, simply because it was what he was supposed to do.

And, well... That IS pretty much why he did what she said.

He was also too busy taking in all the new info to do anything else. Having someone come along and make sure he was doing everything right was rather nice.

So he hurried on after her, marveling that a girl who seemed only a few years older then him knew so much, and seemed to be so powerful. Especially with the way allthe villagers respectively moved out of her way.

If only he knew how old she REALLY was...

1234567890

"Ah, Nanao-chan... You're back! And you've brought me a visitor? How kind of you... I was just looking for someone to share some sake with me..."

Naruto looked at the oddly dressed man, reclining on a mat with a sake bottle and a few cups in front of him.

'What kind of man wears that much pink?'

Of course, his question was quickly answered, when Nanao seemingly pulled a fan out of nowhere and thwapped him on the nose.

"Enough, Taicho... This boy is much too young for you to corrupt! He is Uzumaki Naruto... The former Kyuubi vessel. And, uh... We have reached a technical difficulty."

"A technical difficulty?"

"It seems we've been... entangled."

And that's the new, finalized prologue. Well, it'll probably be run through the editor (read: Spellcheck), but thats the end of this part.

The first chapter will segue into Shunsui's reaction, as well as finding the person who originally made the seal, and seeing if they could figure out the problem.

Perhaps it will also include the beginnings of Naruto's training... At the very least, it will set up for that.

Yeah, going to see Shunsui, unless he made the seal, doesn't make a ton of sense, unless it's to find out who made the seal. Granted, he's her direct superior but it's highly unlikely that Shunsui of all people assigned the mission to her, in which case it would make more sense for her to report to the original mission assigner.

Other than that, however, this story looks like it's shaping up to be beyond awesome. Great job.

I think it makes a lot of sense for her to report to her Captain first. He is her immediate surperior, so she probably needs to report to him.

Also if it was another captain who assigned her the mission like say the old one in charge whose name alludes me atm she would need her captain to set up the meeting.

As for the story, I like it. Haven't noticed any typos or anything, but I wasn't checking to hard for them.

This seems interesting enough and it does show real promise but i can't help but wonder if he will interact with the Naruto universe, stay in the Bleach one, or both.

If he's going to still be a part of the Naruto universe than you will probably have to go to great lengths to ensure he won't be overpowered compared to the rest of the characters(power vise Bleach probably beats almost any other anime I've seen whose plot doesn't involve the word Sayan).

If he stays in the Bleach universe i probably couldn't bee happier since it would mean more creative freedom for you and as a consequence a cooler fic for me to read.

Also up until now Naruto has been relatively laid back but once the initial shock wears off i can't help but seeing him telling everyone about how he'll eventually take Yamamoto's place. B)

I also think it would be hilarious if he were put in Shunsui's squad all the while reviving the old prankster Naruto.Shunsui'd probably just sit back, drink some sake and laugh while Nanao is trying to scold Naruto for redecorating the Soukyoku stands or something similar because they were just too boring. :snigger:

Well, if that side of him reawakens then that is the only division where he could become a seated officer.

Normally I don't like stories where Sasuke gets away with killing Naruto. Now I know he might be beaten, but it doesn't matter. We know that when he dies he will go to Hell and those who were Naruto's friends won't. So we know, outside of hollows, his old aquantances will get what they deserve in the end. That does not mean that there is no chance that the Shinigami won't be interested. Mayuri in particualr would be very interested in doujutsu of all kinds.

starts kickin ass...More importantly can soul society deal with two blond powerhouses fightin. Though Naruto would more likely help ichigo...

@Lumias: Please explain the logic here. If preventing the general Hollow population from discovering the existence of the elemental countries is that big of a deal, then it's most likely the mission would be assigned by Supreme Commader Yamamoto in person. It's vaguely conceiveable that he would have handed the duty of assigning the mission to Shunsui but more likely he'd do it himself. In either case I'm fairly convinced that he would want to hear the verbal report in person (although I will admit that it is my personal opinion I feel it's an educated guess and the most logical outcome). In which case, she would report directly to the Supreme Commander, even if she has to wait in line to give said report. Don't forget, unless this takes place after the Aizen event (which if I recall correctly it's pre-series) then it stands to reason that the mission originated in the something 46 office, meaning that the report would go to Yamamoto or their office directly.

Either way, I can't see any logic in reporting to Shunsui, unless his area of expertise is seals and the like, because realistically, he should have very, very little to do with this (assuming he even needed to know) other than the fact that it's his Lieutenant that it happened to.

And all of that is assuming that Ise doesn't do all the damn reports for the slacker in the first place.

Hmm... My intention had it that Nanao was reporting in to Shunsui, who would bring the two over to the Soutaicho, who would direct them towards the person who did the sealing. Following the Chain of Command, and whatnot.

But it seems as if that scene was rather confusing, so I'll rewrite the end to make it clear what is happening. Either just have the two go straight to Yamamoto, or have Nanao specifically say what is going on.

That works, but there was absolutely no indication that's what was actually going on. Although I don't totally agree with that chain of events, as I still hold if it's as important as it seemed it would have come from higher up, there's nothing wrong with it.

Revised Ending (To clear up the confusion):

"A technical difficulty? What could have happened that you need my help for?"

"It seems we've been... entangled. The seal had some form of safeguard that I was unaware of. I do not have the clearance necessary to discover which Shinigami created the seal. If I could find who made it, I could get them to help me figure out what went wrong."

Nanao was reaching the end of her patience. Naruto had been rather chatty, asking her far too many questions for her to keep up with. He clearly did not know how to act with the proper decorum.

Of course, neither did Shunsui.

Becuase there was only one thing he seemed to focus on, in what Nanao said.

"What do you mean, entangled?"

How's that?

Thanks for pointing out the confusion... I was rather tired when I wrote it (both times... I didn't go to sleep until 11:00 AM this past morning, and the snippet and it's fleshing out were written with me at near exhaustion), so I shouldn't be surprised that this kind of thing happened.

Did this version fix the confusion?
