Durandall's works

1. Knowing anything about tv tropes isn't really important. I don't really catch anything myself, besides this silly 'trope-tan' anime that gets mentioned from time to time. At most, you can just say that Durandal's throwing in various plot points that match to established tropes documented on tv tropes, but it's really no different from any bit of fiction also matching those tropes.

2. Not really, no. There are several arcs that take place in Hinamizawa, but they're not really that important overall and knowing the background to their story, while nice, is not necessary. Much of the stuff that's relevant to the story is something that Durandal added to the Higurashi characters himself (such as so-and-so being married, and how their relationship reflects back on the Haruhi characters). Pretty much anything important to know about Higurashi is summarized for the reader via talks between characters.

3. It's a harem story, unfortunately. It's matched up Kyon with almost every girl at this point, so chances are there's a pairing you don't like there.

4. It switches point of views, but it's not ever first person like the novels if I recall. Large chunks of the story take place from third person behind Kyon, but there are sections behind other characters such as Haruhi or Tsuruya.

I'm pretty sure it matches Kyon up with at least one OC and possibly people who aren't part of the Brigade. If you liked his way of handling romance in his other stories you should be fine. But I ended bailing because there was no real reason to keep reading.

it did pair Kyon with an OC, but noone who is not technically part of the brigade.
the list goes:
Haruhi
Tsuruya (who became part of the Brigade)
Mikuru
Yuki
Kanae (the OC)
Sasaki (who also is not only a very recent developement but was also inducted in the brigade)
and there are plans for Kuyou

Well... twelve chapters in, on the fanfiction.net copy in any case.

It's not bad, but I can't say I like as much as most of his other stuff I have read.

Feels a bit rushed in points. Kind of funny to say that considering how big this story is already... but nevertheless it does.

I am curious though if Mori and Kyon were actually in point of fact talking the same type of protection at the end of chapter 12.

I'll keep reading for now, but it may be a bit spotty on time I can devote to it and may make it the story to read when I have nothing else.

Well, it is one of his older works. It's to be expected that the beginning wasn't as interesting.

I thought his TMOHS stories were all at least 2nd gen to his Ranma ones.

In any case, I'm currently up to chapter 24 or so on the FF.NET copy... some bits hard going, and I'm reading it around doing other stuff and reading other stories...

Are the chapters between the FF.NET copy and his site in sync, meaning is 24 on FF.NET 24 on the site? wonder since the site has 60, and FF.NET has 30.

They're slightly out of sync with the FF.net labeling, since FF.net counts the prologue as one chapter. His labeled '30. Chapter 29' does correspond to chapter twenty nine on his site though. He's just rather lackluster about posting his stuff onto FF.net.

As an aside, he does post much of his work on the soulriders' forum ahead of time for pre-reading and general feedback before posting them up on his site.

As a FYI... I made it though the FF.NET chapters, and was switching to the ones from his site.

One important item of note is there was a note stating chapter 60 was updated as I guess the original had some discrepancy or continuity error in it.

I've made it clear to the point of them entering the restaurant in the first 1/2 of chapter 40 so the girls (Haruhi/Tsuruya) can explain things to him... I'm pausing for the moment to take a break.

I'm a bit put out that it really took them this long to decide to sit him down and tell him how they feel... considering how many chapters it had been since they started this. All they've done is cause him a whole heck of a lot of misery and internal debate while they had fun...

What is amusing about this, is neither they, nor myself, know how he is going to react, he may well not be happy with the solution they came up with... Or at the least happy with them for doing all this behind his back. Especially the pushing of other girls at him, since it may seem to him they would not have otherwise.

That's one of the reasons I like his writing as much as I do.
He manages to capture the dramatic tension of events in the story in just the right way to keep readers captivated and deeply immersed into the atmosphere of the story. Without making it seen unnatural.

I'm of the opinion that K:BDH is one of the most amazing currently updated stories, mainly how its still fucking going and hasnt collapsed in on itself and the amount of story hes had to pre-plan before writing (starting in media res and then actually making it back to that point? I was surprised!)

Technically, the only OC of any import was created before the character it was based on had any information revealed on her (Brian based Kanae on Yasumi, when all we had on her was just her picture), and its kind of a good thing he made her into his slider character rather then going on what her character actually is. That could have been awkward.

Moreover, he addresses several issues standard to Haruhi stories (most notably is how to treat Koizumi), as well as makes the characters seem real.

All in all, its one of my favorite stories to see updates to.

Well... made it through all 60 chapters. Not bad.

too much free time.
at least he/she/it uses it to do something instead scratching their bellies.

It isn't like I made the timeline overnight: with the fic running for a few years I just update it whenever a new chapter is posted (and more than a few times I had to be reminded I had been lazy in updating it). I have been following K:BDH for a long time, you know.

K:BDH, eh?

Better leave the timeline link here.

I should add chapter 60 this weekend.
Interesting...

As a FYI...

If the timeline file is downloaded, some of the formatting is mucked up... for example the indenting does not survive intact and every indented line has junk characters.

If I simply select all and copy to clipboard and paste to a text editor, formatting survives mostly intact, though of course the links do not work...

Do you have a formatting style in mind? I can get info together and organize it but I'm no good at drawing.

Also, why "mostly" intact when copypasting to a text editor? Except links of course.

How you do it is your business... I merely was pointing out that something is not quite right with how the indenting is done, as it should be the same if a local copy is downloaded or if viewing off the original link. It is certainly livable even if you change nothing.

Formatting is intact, but I get extra lines, which does sometimes happen when copying/pasting from HTML to text editor...

Huh... I downloaded the TXT chapters and read those just fine... in fact, I'm slowly rereading it from that version.

And as a test, I just downloaded a single random chapter in HTML and it was fine.

EDIT: In each case, from his web site, simply right click each chapter and select save target. That is how to get it in IE.

Yes, we are a crazy bunch. Why do you ask?
Ick... I far and away by a huge margin prefer reading in plain text and with chapters as separate files...

I dislike gadget level devices too so would almost never resort to reading on one. Maybe a netbook. But even then I would prefer TXT.
