Evangelion EVA AU fic idea, crossoverish

This is an Evangelion AU idea I've been working on. It was partly inspired by the 'humanoid' Angel figure series that Fatuous once linked to, and partly inspired by Star Ocean: Second Story's Ten Wise Men of God and the concept of 'Blessing of Mana' and Heraldry.

Here goes nothing!

----

BACKGROUND:

The base scenario, of course, is NGE. Second Impact did occur as usual, so the starting scenario is basically the same. However, there are major differences.

First, there are no Evangelions. Instead, Second Impact caused some children born after it (not all, mind you) to develop a strong affinit with the forces of Mana, which shape Nature and the Universe - what Star Ocean 2 calls 'The Blessing of Mana'. As such, these children can wield considerable magic-like power, but it can potentially be very risky, as the power has been shown to corrupt hose who cannot handle it, causing them to go slowly insane.

In this scenario, NERV is an organization that's allegedly dedicated to three goals:

-Keeping stray 'Children of Mana' under control;

-Finding the causes of Second Impact;

-Preventing such an event from happening again (just like in NGE, SI had catastrophic results on the planet's climate, some even more extreme).

However, the organization is actually striving towards a very different goal - to herd mankind towards a controlled evolution path. Such a path will cause anyone who does not possess the 'Blessing of Mana' to die should Third Impact occur, while those who are Blessed will survive to start a new human race.

However, the infamous Dead Sea Scrolls come in play there, as well - warning of immensely powerful, almost divine beings wielding Mana who will come to annihilate mankind completely. To combat this future threat, the Marduk Institute is tasked with finding children who are strong with Mana, so that they can become the 'protectors' against the enemies to come. In the meantime, NERV works towards completing the Human Instrumentality Project.

It is in this context that the Children come on the scene. The battle for the world's fate is about to begin...

CHARACTERS:

-Ikari Shinji, age 14 - the Third Child

Son of NERV's commander Gendo Ikari, Shinji was recently called to Tokyo-3 in order to become one of mankind's protectors. What no one knows, however, is that within Shinji lies one of the same creatures whose arrival the Dead Sea Scrolls predicted, though this specific creature is not mentioned in the prophecies. This creature is considered by Shinji to just be a figment of his imagination, but is quite real - and has plans of its own for mankind. Shinji's Mana power enables him to influence the wind.

-Sohryu Asuka Langley, age 14 - the Second Child

One of the first candidates screened by the Marduk Institute, this fiery-tempered half-German half-Japanese girl reportedly has an exceptional attunement with Mana, which enables her to control fire to great effect. Unfortunately, her elemental affinity reflects on her personality, making her extremely difficult to get along with. Asuka's mother, Kyoko Sohryu Zeppelin, was one of the few adults who received the Blessing of Mana following Second Impact, but unfortunately, as with basically all other adults touched by Mana, the power drove her insane, eventually causing her to immolate herself in a holocaust of fire of her own making. Strangely, Asuka swears that her mother still visits her when she sleeps... but that couldn't be true, could it?

-Ayanami Rei, age 14 - the First Child

This quiet, introverted girl has almost total control over both water and ice. She rarely speaks, always comes across as emotionless and seems to obey Commander Gendo's orders without question. She also bears a striking resemblance to Yui Ikari... another adult touched by Mana and driven to insanity and death by it, though not before allegedly making breakthrough discoveries on Mana powers. Who is she really? And why does she seem to be acutely aware of the flow of Mana in the world?

-Rokubungi Gendo Ikari - NERV's CEO

Shinji's father and the late Yui's husband. A cold, calculating man who has been a stranger to his own son ever since his wife's death. Some think he has an agenda of his own...

-Katsuragi Misato - NERV's field officer

One of the extremely rare adults who were blessed by Mana and not made insane by it. Her Mana power is limited, but still strong enough to give her an accelerated healing ability. That is probably the reason why her excessive drinking habits haven't driven her to an early grave... she has a pet penguin named Pen-Pen, and she appears to be able to talk with him - perhaps another, minor ability granted to her by Mana.

-Akagi Ritsuko - NERV's medical officer

Yet another adult who has very minor Mana powers. However, she was made slightly unstable by it, unlike Misato, and is therefore prone to rare but sudden mood swings. She seems to be extremely hostile towards the First Child - possibly because of her Mana-induced instability. Some believe that she also has minor healing powers, as most patients treated by her seem to heal faster than normal, but no such thing was evidenced by tests, and Ritsuko herself is not saying anything about it.

-Suzuhara Touji, age 15 - the Fourth Child

Found later on by the Marduk Institute, and one of Shinji's classmates. He comes across as a dumb jock with lots of strength, and unsurprisingly, he is attuned to Earth. He tends to chase after girls, but has a soft spot for the Class Representative, Hikari Horaki.

-Aida Kensuke, age 14 - Hacking expert

A classmate of Shinji, with no Mana powers to speak of. He is, however, an unparalleled genius at hacking, being even able to break in NERV's high security network, given enough time. He is also a maniacal weapon fetishist, and hopes to one day be able to ride a Power Suit, or at the very least operate a Wanzer.

-Horaki Hikari, age 14 - Class Representative

Classmate of the Children, and Class Representative. She secretly harbors feelings for Shinji, and does not like Touji's skirt-chasing ways. The Marduk Institute dismissed her as a negligible Mana user, but she actually possesses a very strong defensive power, if totally uncontrollable - whenever she feels threatened, she projects an enormously powerful spiritual barrier around her, capable of stopping even the most powerful Mana attack. When this barrier is active, Hikari can, with huge effort, extend it to protect someone close enough to her, but the strain is so much that it leaves her exhausted for days afterwards, and also seems to make her grumpy. Touji jokingly dubs the barrier 'Absolute Terror Field', or AT-Field, because, he claims, 'it makes her a terror to deal with after she uses it'.

-Kirishima Mana, age 16 - free agent

A Mana-less child, or so it seems. Rather, she is unable to use Mana herself, but can channel it into items, thus enabling her to give said items weak elemental properties. Not a very useful skill, but its there. Her real fied of expertise is information gathering - she's very good at hacking, though not as good as Kensuke, and is also a trained spy and capable of operating both Wanzers and Power Suits. One wonders what this girl is doing around the Children, and especially Shinji...

-Nagisa Kaworu, age unknown, the Fifth Child

A young man with an immense Mana power. He seems to have control over all elements. Nothing much is known about him, but he seems to have a liking for Shinji...

-Ibuki Maya - NERV bridge operator

She is in charge of relaying orders to the battlefield, and has a case of 'hero worship' directed towards Ritsuko, whom she views as a successful, intelligent, beautiful woman. She also develops a considerable crush for Shinji when he saves her during an Angel attack. Shinji claims that she has some sort of Mana power, despite her being born before Second Impact, and also claims she is in no danger of going insane from it. If this proves to be true, NERV would be the place with the greatest concentration of sane Mana users in the world. But, what could her Mana power be...?

-Azriel - the Dark Messenger, the Wings of Chaos

The Angel living within Shinji's body. Shinji believes him to be a simple figment of the imagination, but as time goes on, the young Child realizes that Azriel is quite real... in no small pat because when Shinji is under extreme stress, he 'grows' energy wings, becomes capable of flight and becomes extremely violent. This state, which Azriel calls 'Hikari no Tsubasa' (Wings of Light), is probably a manifestation of the Angel's chaotic nature. But Shinji's greatest fear is that the Wings of Light represent... the true, hateful 'himself' under the mask.

----

That's it for now. I'll list villains later... thoughts? Please do comment!

This will likely be a full AU story, with possibly only ties to NGE: Girlfriend of Steel 2...

Hmm, this slightly reminds me of another fic I read called Extended Impacts of Second Impact but that one seems to be abandoned. But anyway, upon first reading this I dismissed it as another somewhat-not-really-kinda-original idea, but going through all of it I found it growing on me and the last paragraph you put their

that one, really got me, hook, line, and sinker. So I can't wait to see how this turns out, I'll be eager to see what you some up with.

Hehehe. Good, I'm sparking interest.

Doing away with the Evangelion units entirely will probably cause a large amount of friction among h4rdk0r3 fans, but who cares. I still feel like trying, especially since for this idea I can literally throw most of the normal storyline out of the window.

Not bad. Certainly well thought out. I can see it becoming a great story. Hope it isn't too ambitious in its endeavor.

Fatuous tells me I should just go ahead and write original fiction, as I'm so maniacal towards making backgrounds, I might as well just make up a completely original story instead of working on an existing scenario. :D

Anyway, I made minor corrections to the first post, and am now working on the villains list. Kaworu is still Tabris, but I'll have all 10 Wise Men from Star Ocean 2 as 'Angels', hehe. So expect to see them, with their original Angelic names. :p

That's about the only SO2 reference I'll use besides the Blessing of Mana.

My first thought on reading that was....

Kyoko....burnsssssss.....

^_^

The name of Shinji's Angelic ability reminds me of Sousei no Aquarion. But only the name, really.

As usual of you, this fic is looks very well planned. I'm also with Israfel when I say that Azriel looks very neat, although Shinji is looking very different from his original personality.

More thoughts later, I'm a bit busy at the moment...

Heh, Kyoko as Ignus. I hadn't thought of that... but yeah, taken that way, Kyoko sounds like she pulled an Ignus. :D

These are the Angels I will have, and the order they'll 'land' in. Note how I outright replaced Adam and Lilith, though the replacements pretty much have their same 'role'.

As mentioned, I'm having humanoid Angels based on the figures Fatuous once linked to. Some of the Angels are actually quite large, even being close to 10-11 feet tall, but as a rule, they're close enough to 'human' proportions.

The NGE 'returners' (Sachiel and company) retain their original abilities (so for instance, Arael is capable of attacks from high up into orbit, and can mindrape still, and Shamshel has those 'energy whips'), while the 'new' angels, which are loosely based on the Ten Wise Men in SO2, will have to be adapted to NGE standards. :p

Anyway: the list! Only names for now, feel free to make up new and creative powers for the newcomers!

----

ANGELS:

-Gabriel, the First Messenger, the Eternal Wings

-Lucifer, the Second Messenger, the Fallen Wings

-Sachiel, the Third Messenger

-Shamshel, the Fourth Messenger

-Zaphkiel, the Fifth Messenger

-Jophiel, the Sixth Messenger

-Gaghiel, the Seventh Messenger

-Israfel, the Eighth Messenger

-Sandalphon, the Ninth Messenger

-Kamael, the Tenth Messenger

-Bardiel, the Eleventh Messenger

-Arael, the Twelfth Messenger

-Raphael, the Thirteenth Messenger

-Haniel, the Fourteenth Messenger

-Michael, the Fifteenth Messenger

-Metatron, the Sixteenth Messenger, the Voice of God

-Tabris, the Seventeenth Messenger, the Free Will

EDIT: Just noticed a screw up I made. Sachiel and Zadkiel are one and the same according to the Bible. So I'm replacing Gaghiel at 6th spot.

Also notice that three of the seven major Archangels (Haniel, Raphael and Michael) show up near the end, followed by Metatron and Tabris. Gabriel, the fourth, is the First here, replacing Adam, while the remaining three have been scrapped, though was tempted to add Uriel, the Divine Judge.

EDIT 2: replaced 'Angel' with 'Messenger', edited Gabriel and Lucifer's titles, edited Azriel's title too.

One last tidbit: this is the inspiration for the angel Shinji is hosting in his body.

Okay, I've decided to actually write this baby. I've worked on almost everything with Fatuous, except for a title, so I now ask for help.

The story will be heavily centered around both the new aftereffects of Second Impact (Mana powers and all) and the characters' memories and feelings, and whether they can be trusted or not... any ideas?

Right now I'm considering 'Alternate Genesis Evangelion: Conflicted Illusion' as a title, but I'm open to suggestions.

Sounds interesting, but avoid naming it "Whatever Genesis Evangelion - Something or Another". There are so many bad fics with that kind of name I tend to avoid them all.

The characters are ok, as long as Shinji isn't influenced by a "figment of his imagination" all the time, otherwise he wouldn't be a character, just a vessel for an OC.

Is it going to work like "REAL" magic, which you can learn virtually any kind, or are the characters "stuck" with the powers you assigned them?

Unless SI was the breaking of a seal placed upon mankind to keep humans from tapping mana, all the characters are mutants, even if they are the next step of evolution.

All right, misc answers:

1) Mana is essentially a spiritual power. It's not a X-Men like power... it is heavily influenced by one's soul, and even by their personality and mindset. Notice how Asuka and Rei's mana power matches their personality. Also, if a character tends to doubt him/herself, his mana powers may weaken. Conversely, confidence may strengthen them. Kinda like Ranma's Mouko Takabisha...

Finally, and most important, mana powers are affected by one's emotions. Take Asuka, for instance: anger greatly increases the effectiveness of her fire power, but if she's afraid her fire will be less intense than usual. Similarly, as long as Rei keeps her emotion under control, her ice power is strong, but if she lets something disturb her, its effectiveness drops.

Similarly, personal feelings affect defensive and support powers. Hikari's AT Field takes great effort to extend to another person, but that effort is lessened if she extends it to someone she greatly cares for... like for instance Shinji. Conversely, extending it to Touji (whom she dislikes) will be harder.

I studied Mana to be a power of the soul, not just a mutation. Technically, a character COULD learn how to use a type of Mana power that does not match his soul and mind, but... there wasn't enough time to train anyone in that regard. Kaworu can use different mana types because of his Angel nature, but the rest are currently out of luck.

2) Second Impact is indeed the reason why humans are slowly gaining the power of Mana. However, it is more accurate to say they are *regaining* it. Mana was always there for humans to grasp - but by embracing technology and artifice, the human race shunned their mystic side, and their Mana power waned until oit outright disappeared. Second Impact simply reawakened that potential.

It also explains why most adults go insane if they received the Blessing of Mana from Second Impact - they suddenly must deal with an alien power, which they had no time to adapt to during their body's development (unlike those who were either conceived after Second Impact or whose mothers were pregnant during it), and it negatively affects their mind and soul.

3) In a sense all the characters are OCs. Mana has subtle influences on all of them, hehehe. Shinji just happens to be... more influenced than others.

As for the title, feel free to suggest better ones. I tend to stink at them.

Hmm, titles, I usually have pretty good titles but that's when i just come up with them for my own stories, coming up with one for someone elses story is another matter entirely, but I can try.

So let's see here, Shinji's power is that of the wind so you could do something to do with that such as "Ride the Wind" or something else similiar, or possibly "Follow The Wind", "When The Wind Dies Down...", "Winds Of Fury", or something else. Another possibility was that you could do something to do with Azriel lurking beneath the surface of Shinji's meek personality such as "Beneath The Mask, Where Demons Lurk" or "Here Be Monsters" or whatever else, I'm really struggling here so don't expect much. Some other random names you could call it could be "At The End Of The Road", "When All The World's A Show", "In The Light, Hidden Horrors Hide". That's about all I think up at the moment, sorry none of them were all that great, but ah well, there'ya go.

In this case, I vote combining the Evangelion and Star Ocean names and maybe adding something a little extra for the title. For instance, my Star Evangel suggestion is just a starting point - you could use it, or something else (maybe similar like Neon Evangel Star Genesis or some shit, or something completely different), and maybe add a subtitle that references the fic's plot directly.

A lot of people discourage using the original work's name in the title of your fanfiction, but I think it's a subjective matter - for example, if Teriyaki Chicken had named his fic that inspired Hawk's Tears of Blood (which was the first Hawk fic I came across that eventually led to me reading the rest of his work, then coming here when he formed this site) Love Hina: Blood Hina, that'd have been a bit redundant. On the other hand, for two of my ill-fated fanfiction (Star Wars - The New Jedi Order: Zeonic Advance and Metroid: Fugitive respectively), I personally think the titles were nice choices, the Star Wars one because it identified what general time period it was taking place in and the Metroid one because the whole fic was written with the purpose of making it similar to an actual Metroid game (granted, without the powerup hunting and the like, but you get my drift).

Making up a good title can be a pain in the ass. A lot of my old fics never saw the light of day because I could never figure out a good title for them, and lost interest before putting them out in the general public (FF.net or elsewhere). For instance, my short-lived Dirty Pair/Chronicles of Riddick crossover was canned because by the time I decided on suckily titling the fic "Lovely Angels and Demons in the Dark" (which is a too cliche and lame), I'd lost interest in adding to what I'd already written and the project wound up scrapped. A good title requires a creative imagination... or some quality drugs.

Hmm... well, keep 'em coming, after all, until I have spmething to show and post I won't need titles.

Right now, I'm planning the fights with the Angels. The first and seventh one, in particular (Sachiel and Gaghiel).

This is what I made up for 'em:

Sachiel (and the first chapter):

As the first fight, it is also the fight where we get to see Shinji's Wings of Light in action for the first time. It starts much like the original NGE - with Shinji reaching Tokyo-3 just as Sachiel is starting to tear it apart.

Following his meeting with Misato, Shinji gives us a nice display of his wind Mana when, in a pinch, he's forced to conjure a strong wind to lift both himself and Misato (car and all) away from the rampaging Sachiel. Following that, the Tokyo-3 FDefense Unit, made of Wanzers, manages to tie it down long enough for a N2 mine to be dropped on it (though unfortunately, the Wanzers and their pilot are caught in the blast).

Predictably, Sachiel is unharmed, but is slowed down enough for Shinji and misato to safely reach Geofront. There, Shinji is told what is expected of him, and given a modified suit very similar to the original plug suit, specifically made to augment his Mana powers (basically, it helps him focus his Mana, and makes it more powerful).

He's then unceremoniously kicked out on the battlefield without any training (some things never change). As you may expect, he gets his ass kicked badly and ends up getting blasted in a mountainside by his Angel opponent.

Following that, ZOMG MAD!SHINJI. Ownage happens. Then Shinji drops unconscious and wakes up in the hospital. End chapter.

Gaghiel (and Asuka's debut):

The fight is again at sea, which predictably puts Asuka at a disadvantage (hello, fire and water do not mix). The fight ends up going underwater, where hinji helps Asuka survive and win by enveloping all three (himself, Asuka and Gaghiel) in a large air bubble, enabling Asuka to fry the annoying Angel to death. Although, due to the fire consuming oxygenm, they risk choking to death before resurfacing... but hey, the important thing is they won. Teamwork at its finest... if you overlook how Asuka brags about 'beating the angel' afterwards, completely ignoring Shinji's role in the fight. Typical Asuka... ;)

So... like my plans for these two?

Hmm, yah, seems pretty good, I like how they're layed out and I think you make good use of everyones powers throughout the battles, my only problem is, are the angels gonna have specific powers or are they just gonna' be miniturized versions of themselves, because it's all well and good to let Shanshel keep his whips and let Ariel keep her mind rape attack but what can Gaghiel keep? All he had was his ginormous mouth and body, beyond that he had no real 'powers' per say, so how are you gonna' do that?

From what I understand, the new Angels/Messengers are being based on the Wise Men from Star Ocean II. And from what I understand of Star Ocean II, that means that they'll look like humans, but be highly powerful.

Correct. However, I will most likely just use their names. I'm only taking names and concepts from Star Ocean, although I plan to keep Lucifer, aka Cyril, and Gabriel, aka Indalecio, very similar to how he was in SO2.

As for Gaghiel, he's going to be considerably bigger than the average Angel in my fic, and he'll also have water-based attacks, in addition to moving much faster underwater than he does on land or in the air.

Basically, some Angels will just be smaller, cuter version of their giant ugly selves (heh), while some others, like Gaghiel, will be heavily edited to take advantage of Mana powers.

One thing that I introduced to make Mana powers more like magic than X-men-like powers is that using Mana powers for extended periods requires a conscious effort, so if something disrupts the user's concentration (such as getting thrown through several walls, kekeke), then whatever long-term effect they were trying to mantain will immediately cease.

Also, people DO run out of Mana. There's only so much Mana a human body/soul can store, and without Mana power, one cannot manipulate elements, heal or anything like that. However, Mana reserves replenish themselves over time by drawing in the raw Mana power that is in the surrounding environment, so resting a little will usually enable a tired Mana warrior to rejoin the battle, though not at their best, of course.

In a sense, having the Blessing of Mana means being once again one with nature, instead of trying to dominate it like we humans do. Call it a 'return to the roots'.

One last detail. The modified suits the Children use aren't just mana power amplifiers. They also draw some mana from their wearer to be used as an armor of sorts - how else do you expect the kids to survive the tremendous beatings the Angels are going to dole out?
