Just got done watching 3.0 and now can't wait for 4.0 and hoping to see Shinji back in Eva-01 before the end.

Most of it is intuitive, but I'm still surprised so many people are apparently as completely lost as they are.

I mean, I didn't get everything, but still...

What didn't you guys get?
Spoiler Alert

Why the fuck did they skip forward 14 years? What is "The Curse of Eva" besides a plot device to make it so Asuka, and Mari haven't aged. Why did Misato pull a complete 480-720-1080.... Better yet, what the hell did Shinji do (You know, besides inadvertently trigger Third Impact with having a spine for once (HOO BOY)), the hell happened to Keel and the rest of SEELE... WHERE DID THE SECOND LANCE COME FROM!?

What is there -to- get? What the -fuck- happened in that movie?
Why the skip? Because it allows plenty of time for the events depicted in Eva 2.22 preview to occur, plus character development/character change. Seriously though, that's like asking why time flows in a story.

As for curse of Eva - besides the not aging bit, it also induces more sympathy for Asuka/Mari and Shinji as they are now stuck at 14 - There is also the possibility it'll come into play with Mari in the future. Also, it fucks with Shinji.

Misato? I don't understand, though I'd have to guess its about Misato turning on Shinji somewhat - but you already explained that with the Shinji causing Third Impact/enabling Third Impact and therefore nearly ending the world/ killing potentially billions of people for his own selfish desires which she probably didn't know about when she was egging Shinji on, which would instil bitter feelings, guilt and self loathing. I could also point out that Misato didn't pull the trigger on the Collar when she had the chance, so at least some of her feelings were hidden/faked and she still cared about him. I must also point out that Shinji has the potential to Awaken an EVA and trigger Fourth Impact, another world ending scenario.

The Second Lance - I can only theorize that either the Lance of ???? (I can't remember the name, but the Lance that isn't Longinus) that was used to defeat the 12th Angel/Eva MRK. 6 transformed into a second Lance of Longinus, Kaworu was mistaken on what happened in the Chamber or that Gendo Switched them somehow - As for where it came from originally... Unless my Lore is off, didn't Kaworu come down at the end of 2.22 with a Spear that wasn't Longinus?

As for SEELE - I can't be sure on this one, but I think they thought Fourth Impact would lead to Instrumentality and, ahem, prepared themselves for it - In a rather permanent and fatal way. I might be wrong on it though. Either way, Gendo basically played them.

But I don't think any of that really matters to you because I'm pretty sure (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) that it's not that the events of the film confuse you in and of themselves, but rather you don't like the direction the film took.

Why did the Time Skip happen? Cause Shinji was trapped inside Unit 01 for 14 years, and we see everything from his perspective, that's why.
I liked the film just fine, I just wish I knew what was going on. And I understand that yeah, a lot of it is bolstering us (as the fans) watching keeping Shinji's viewpoint as the protagonist, but it just feels like one big heavy handed asspull. And, if it is indeed a backhanded joke at the fans, the dude blew -how much in money- pulling this joke? That practically makes the entire movie one big joke... No, at this point, it's insulting. If it's Anno going "Lol you dumb fucks" then there's no real reasoning. They couldn't have continued off the track otherwise, they threw out these new plot points and didn't concretely explain any of it, instead choosing to focus on browbeating Shinji more, giving Kaworu an even -more- depressing death, and generally making me wonder if I could edit names and details, and send it in to Games Workshop and get a reply email: "That's too grimdark for -us- man."

Long story short,
What.
The.
Fuck.

Now, to talk positively, I really do like the whole flying airship of doom motherfucker, and I look forward to Q showing us more of anti-NERV, especially with how the movie ended with the three original pilots reunited, and it even looking like Asuka might be somewhat back to "Not as much of a bitch" mode, and Rei potentially gaining back some humanity.

But we all know how that will end, won't we?

A big middle finger from Anno.

Be fair - How often did Eva ever concretely explain everything?

The ending of 2.0 showed promise, but yet again Shinji has been slapped down the moment there was any hint of character development. And this time, he got the idiot ball as a consolation prize.
Actually, I found Shinji rather different from 1.0 and 2.0.

He's bolder, more social and more willing to act on his own desires.

It's honest criticism in my opinion. If someone writes a fic about X and then in the second chapter suddenly everything is COMPLETELY FUCKING DIFFERENT WITH NO EXPLANATION, I figure people will find the quality of the story suffers.

Don't get me wrong, just saying that my suspension of WTF was fine up until... this.

Correct, and he is mercilessly punished for it.

I raged for the first half-hour of the movie.

'Seriously, you fucks? After you made him pilot your robot, encouraged him to open himself up to the possibility of relationships, and therefore pain, egged him on into being a hero, make him emotionally vulnerable, and turn him into the kind of guy that would do literally anything to save someone he loved, you do THIS shit to him?"

I think Anno began to hate his fans nearly from the very beginning when he realized that people didn't see how much of himself emotionally he poured into Evangelion. Instead of recognition and thoughtful discussion, he got limp-dicked nerds who geeked out over Rei's smile, Asuka's ass in a plugsuit, and giant explosions.

Like I said earlier, I'm not sure if Anno is a genius, a troll, or genuinely hates what Eva has become.

I'd be willing to put 5$ on all three.

And do you know what? I can't really blame him.

How do you think you'd feel if you created something by pouring all your inner most thoughts and feelings into it, and it became super popular - but the majority of fans only like it because of the most superficial and shallow reasons?

I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to for Anno to go to a convention or something, half expecting to get questions on the deeper relationships and character dynamics, only to be bombarded with "Shinji is such a wimp. Why doesn't he fuck Rei? She's so hot."

On a side note, was it just me or did Shinji not apologize once throughout this entire movie?

He did not. I was very proud of him.

Also, I totally would ask about the deeper stuff (Although admittedly I'd want to ask "How long until Shinji decides to pair up instead of having UST with -every female that has more than five minutes of screentime." Come on, I want him to have a harem, but throw me a bone here.)

Also, at that point I'd have to say Anno's being a whiny bitch himself. I mean, there's always going to be fans/readers/etc asking the dumb questions because that's just how things are. There's this group of people who like things because A. Then group of people because B. Then C, D, and E all the way to Z. Focusing on one dynamic and getting pissy about it is kind of childish, innit?

Edit:
On that note, I suppose it's only fair for a dude who did Evangelion uber-depressed and the like to have a fit about people mocking that point in his life. I know I'd probably throw a shitfit too.

I just watched this. It was a bit different that I expected. I don't know why I expected this to be lighter than EoE, but hell, this was very grim dark. Sure, Kawarou creeped me out, but he was important. Damn. I can't wait for 4.0.

Sorry for the necro, but I thought I might share this with anyone who's waiting for the official English release.

I contacted Funimation a few days ago, asking if it was possible to get an (rough) idea when 3.33 would be released, and received the following in an email:

We are currently working very closely with the Japanese studio and the original creator on the upcoming Evangelion 3.33 home video release. This is a unique opportunity that presented itself to us, and since the plot for Evangelion 3.33 is so different from previous story lines, we are thrilled that the creator has asked to be so heavily involved in this project. Studio Khara has even decided that they would like to create their own special subtitle tracks for the release! We thank you for your continued patience as we work to confirm a release date. Please keep an eye on our social channels and our website for more updates!
It's nice to know that they're taking such care to make a great dub, bu I still want my (official) 3.33, dammit.

Sorry (again! It seems I'm due to necro this thread once a year) for the necro, but Funimation announced (Via AnimeNewsNetwork) that they aim to release Rebuild 3.33 late 2015/early 2016 (more likely the latter).

For anyone who's waiting for the official (NA) release.
