NGE: Your Happy Years by Gregg Landsmann
Summary: In a slight variation on the effects of Free Will, the Angels attack in 2021 instead of 2015. This is not to say people are unprepared. It's just that things tend to go off track when the Scenario is sort of left to ferment...

From chapter one:
Boots on the steel floor, the lights in the distance in the hallway flickering on. One of these days, Misato realizes, he's going to go all the way and have disco music play on the speakers whenever he enters the room. It is a heavy burden, realizing the man you work for is completely insane, albeit insane in the fun sort of way. Unfortunately, said man is also responsible for saving the world.

"Good. He's here."

Shinji looks up. The man is sporting some gray, giving him a more defined look. His beard is more trimmed, a full beard instead of the creepy muttonchops gone wild that he had when he was a teenager.

The amber glasses are still there, so is the black uniform he always wears, although at least he isn't wearing that god damned turtleneck today.

"F-father?" Shinji stammers.

Gendo Ikari, Supreme Commander of NERV, thrusts his hands into his pockets and stares at his son. Calmly, he directs his gaze at Rei, who gives off a faint, knowing smile.

"You're needed," Gendo says.

"Let me guess," Shinji groans, slowly standing up, "I'm piloting one of your giant robots?"

"Correct. You've gone over your mother's notes. Good. Any questions?"

Shinji nods.

"Are you fucking insane?"

They pause. Gendo raises an eyebrow.

"He's got a point," Misato says, "Sohryu Doctrine for Evangelion engagement kind of suggests we need him trained. He knows about the Evas, but we never put him in a plug."

"Unfortunately, Unit 01 is combat ready," Rei responds, "Unit 00, while operation ready, is an inferior model until new parts arrive."

"We don't have time," Ritsuko says, hands in the air, "Look, we can just have Shinji sit in the plug, and it'll do the rest! We train him when it's over!"

"That's fucking retarded," Shinji yells back, turning from Akagi to his father, "I'm not trained! I got beaten up in school every day until I graduated! You want to put me in a giant robot and have it step on me, why?"

"We have no other choice."

Slapping his hand over his face, Shinji lets out a litany of curses. Rei watches, taking in the new, filthy words for future reference.

"I knew it," Shinji moans, "You're trying to kill me, aren't you? This is all an elaborate revenge for when I told you off nine years ago, isn't it?"

"In part."

"You're not even hiding it! This is one of your half-assed ideas for us bonding! Just like two years ago when you kidnapped me in the middle of the night, took me camping and you had me fight off a bear! I don't know what Mother wants, Dad, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't want me to get eaten by a giant green Space Alie-"

The tranquilizer dart hits him in the arm. Shinji's gaze turns from the dart to his father, who holsters the tranq gun and watches as Shinji's eyes roll up and he collapses to the floor.

You're using a definition of awesome that is in fact, probably not awesome at all. Our differing viewpoints aside, you could come up with something better than, "I like him so there."

Please, enlighten me without your subjective nonsense.

True, but trying to actually describe what it is that makes his work so awesome is something that I'm finding difficult...

...Hmmm...

...I would say that one of the things Gregg is good at is invoking an emotional response in his readers, and doing so with such expert pacing that it leaves the reader feeling very satisfied with what they have read...

...Does that make even a lick of sense?

Mmm, I suppose.

The words are placed and arranged in a careful manner that evokes the desired reaction. There is, of course, no way to really describe what it is that makes it 'awesome' or any other subjective term to be flung around at a whim.

Just remember: There is no universal standard for awesome or humor. What one person cheers and finds hilarious will appal someone else. When we lose sight of objectivity, we lose to ability to accurately assess that which is in front of us. It is a folly of current society, where the only thorough reviews are the bad ones, and they are often as over the top in their rejection of said story that it renders much of the criticism toothless. No one will listen to you if you call them a moronic retarded who couldn't out think a brain dead crack monkey who had a lobotomy.

I am a far more caustic critic of things, I am merciless even to that which I like and have a view so poor of my own works that you'd think I hated everything I ever thought of. But I am negative because no one else will be. Not because it's the 'truth', but because both sides should be told.

My own series, Reprint, is perfectly decent and fun story that people will like it, or they won't. I will never view it beyond the terms of decent and enjoyable. It will never ever exceed my unfair standards of good, nor do the impossible and become great in my eyes. I refuse to blind myself to the faults of my writing. I hold others to that stance as well.

It is, as before, just another viewpoint. The only question is if you'll think about the other side or not.

Ah, caustic detachment.

As expected of one who calls himself "Anonguy".

But in my opinion, Gregg is a solid writer, able to believably develop a large cast of characters in such a way that many of his scenes are heralded as "Crowning Moments"...

...Of course, I will admit my objectivity is compromised, as Gregg has incorporated some of the ideas I've put forward on his thread over at Spacebattles.com...

...And speaking of that thread, I feel I must use this to show you my appreceation of your writting skills:

*Draws back his fist.*

ANONGUY!!!

Let me see you...

GRIT!

THOSE!!

TEETH!!!

*Punches Anonguy.*

Perhaps it is best if we just assume that Greggs fics are just not for some people. There is nothing wrong with that. The amount of dedication and discussion in the fic discussion thread over at space battles is staggering. By now that man could probably post his grocery list and people would call it awesome. But then again, fan does come from fanatic...

It occured to me after posting the below in the Ranma section it would be good to give notice here as well...

As a note for those that follow it, the below, while it has not been updated per se, has been uploaded to MediaMiner.ORG on a new account.

R-MULTI 'Sic Semper Morituri' by Daniel Jess Gibson - [Dld Date=11/21/2008] - [Dld Size=7146kb] - [Dld Files=61] - [Status=Inactive]

I noticed so far neither the SSM side stories, nor the branch series 'Sailor Jupiter' have been posted to it yet.

While it is true he has had a FanFiction.NET account for some time, SSM is not posted to it. With the demise of his web site earlier in the year, I was wondering what he was going to do.

Nobody Dies

"I think we can reach an understanding. I think we should pool our vastly superior intellects together and make something useful out of our hatred for each other. Because as much as I want to see you slowly die. In a fire. I believe we can put this behind us."

The shutters retract. The plating around the head shifts, to resemble a smile.

"For science."

The eye narrows again.

"You monster."

:snigger:

Oh, I don't know... I've rather enjoyed the fic so far, and the latest chapter has quite the mindfck for poor Shinji...
