Why am I writing this? Mostly because I'm so very bad at writing so I need to get better. Partly because I like Xander and Halloween fics and partly because I want to write something.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything.

It been a pretty lively day all in all, Xander decided. Quite a bit more people out and moving around than what was normal. He sat with his leg crossed behind a small green blanket with various trinkets and items on it. Dressed in brown shirt and pants and with his brown hair and eyes he was an unassuming sight and barely got one look, even less a second, from the people passing by.

He had been sitting a bit off from the main market, on the grass beneath a tree, since morning and had been trying to sell some of his inventory to anyone who was interested. Unfortunately, he'd barely broken even if you counted food and lodging after the costs for his sale license and replacing his wares. He doubted it would change until nightfall but Xander still held some hope.

Still... as he looked up at the sky he saw that the sun was getting pretty close to the horizon, 'won't belong now before it gets dark...' sighing, he rose to his feet. As he put away the items left in his bag the rays of the sun slowly diminished. Rising to his feet he shook the blanket, as it unfolded a closer look showed it to be a cloak.

With a glance a the setting sun, Xander brought the hood of the cloak over his head, walking into an alley of the market, bag in hand.

.................

Xander almost felt like crying as he left the bank, true, he'd paid all the bills for the month... but with the money left he would have no way to get his hands on a torn page of a spell book, even less a whole book or pay for classes at the academy.

Yes, despite the way he made his living Xander was a wizard, although not a very good one. He was somewhat uncertain exactly how that had happened actually. It had started before Halloween, he had had all plans all ready and done, only thing left was getting a gun and he could go as a soldier with the fatigues and keep his budget above the red.

Then, of course, everything had, metaphorically speaking, gone to hell.

.............................

He couldn't believe his eyes, even so, he couldn't turn them away. Xander stared a the abomination in his hands with a growing horrified fascination. Sure he had heard about these things, he knew they could happen and living on the hellmouth he had come to expect bad things to happen.

However... this, this just wasn't fair...

He didn't understand how his mom had done it. She couldn't have used magic, and he was pretty certain no demons had entered the house when he was looking another way.

The reason for his mental turmoil was his army fatigues for the Halloween.

His now pink army fatigues.

...Bright ...Neon ...Pink! army fatigues.

He had no idea how long he sat there, just staring at the abominations, then he reacted in a calm collected manner.

ôOhmygodohmygodohmygod!ö

...or not.

ôI'm gonna die, what am I gonna do? I'll have to move to Alaska after this!ö

Putting the fatigues he took deep breaths, 'Okay, calm down, you can still get a new costume done. After a brainstorming where he mostly came up with I'mdeadI'mdeadI'mdead he stopped and looked at his sheet. Sweeping it over his shoulders and walking into the bathroom he looked at the image in the mirror.

'It looks somewhat like a cape... or a cloak' calming down as he realized he might not get mocked and teased to death for his costume he also realized he needed some desperate help. Him and needles and sewing not exactly getting along.

As Joyce Summers opened the door she smiled ôWhy Xander, nice to see you' frowning slightly she added ôI'm sorry but Buffy isn't home at the momentö

ôAh, that's alright Mrs. Summers, I'm here to see you.ö

ôHmm? And what can I do for you, then?ö

ôWell, you see, I don't know how to do it, and you were the first I thought of....ö

Joyce frowned slightly at the incoherent mumbling, and blushing, from her daughters friend as he stood on her doorway.

ô..and I even brought my own sheets...ö

Blinking rapidly, she tried to make sense of what he was saying. 'He couldn't be asking...' feeling incredulous at the thought she raised an eyebrow at the young man.

Squeaking slightly he finished ô-andIwashopingyoucouldhelpmesewmyHalloweencostumepleaseö

Sorting it out she found herself smiling, partly at the young embarrassed boy in front of her, partly of her own thoughts.

ôSure Xander, I'd be delighted to helpö

Xander was pretty happy with the costume so far. Still... it needed something... wizardry, or whatever you like to call it.

Tagging along to with Buffy and Willow to the costume shop, Ethans, he was soon browsing shelves and sales bins for that little something to give his costume character.

He stopped, hand hovering over what he had at first glance taken for a glorified snowglobe. A green seethrough crystal mounted on the back of some mystical beast. It fit nicely in his hand as he brought it up to his face, flipping it around he also noticed the very reasonable price.

ôOh, you have an excellent taste, young manö

Nearly jumping out of his face he came face to face with...

ôUm... who are youö Xander asked, the hand holding the costume part rising slightly, as if he was thinking of beaning the creep with it and leg it.

ôI, am Ethan Rayne, owner of this shopö

ôOh...ö the brown haired teen lowered his hand, a goofy grin spreading across his face

öNice to meet you, you have a very nice shop hereö

ôWhy, thank you, just for that I'll add this grimoire to your purchase, free of charge:ö

Xander blinked as a slightly moldy book with a heavy lock was thrust under his nose.

ôUhh... thanks?ö he was slighly surprised how the man knew he was dressing as... until he remembered the shelf he had been looking at was filled with fake wands, staffs, spell books, and other 'magic' items.

As the slayer and company left his shop Ethan smiled. He had been worried that he would only ge the two girls as the boy had only been looking at accessories. One accessory would have been insufficient for the spell to take hold, two on the other hand? Why, two accessories were almost a whole costume.

As he went into the back of the shop Ethan smiled at all the ChaosTM he would be causing, and Giles reaction, a infernal grin split his face.

Xan Hari, a wizard of no small renown, was somewhat uncertain as to what was going on. Judging by the heavy pressure of magic in the air and all the demons and creatures running around he had landed in the middle of a war of some kind.

Reaching into his cloak he took out his Jar of Evil, a see-through geen crystal on a creature, focusing his will it soon grew to about the size of a motorcycle. Idly waving his hand and blasting away some of the creatures that had gotten a bit close, he took out his Grimoire.

Opening it simply by touching it with his finger he was soon browsing through it. ôAh, Dimension Gate, that should get me homeö after that small murmur he raised a hand at the crystal. Green smoke forming inside it from nowhere, runes and lines appearing and disappearing within it, as te runes and lines slowly became stable, forming a magic circle he snapped his fingers.

Glowing lines appeared, the Jar of Evil and Xan at its center, with another snap of his fingers and a flash of light, there was nothing. ...Nothing except a confused ghost, a young girl in appearance, who was afraid, confused, and very upset.

As for Xander... he rally didn't know what had happened or how he could have appeared where he did. He had a vague, yet persistent, unsettling feeling he missed something between the teleportation and appearing in this world, he just couldn't figure out what. It might just be the hazy confused memories from Halloween and the character he had turned into that was confusing him. Even so, he felt something was missing.

Nevertheless he found himself in a brand new world, his only belongings his clothes and the stuff from Halloween. A strange crystal-magic focus-thingie he had no clue to use, and a book he couldn't open. Trying to find help or a way home had been... difficult. The people at the magic academy had been understanding, still they had rules. They had no way to send him home themselves, they couldn't allow non-students access to the library, and they couldn't allow nonpaying people to become students.

........

This led to Xander trying to earn money enough to get him the information he needed to get home. From what he'd seen so far it would be far more likely for him to succeed if he became a wizard, wizards not needing or seeking help and favors from non-wizards, and as such, not granting favors and help to non-wizards.

So, Xander had reasoned, as a wizard he'd either find a way home himself, or get someone to help him home. As a bonus he might be able to help more back in good ol' Sunnyhell if he learnt magic.

One problem.

As Wizards are rare and do not need much of what mundanes, non-wizards, provide, magic and texts about magic tends to be expensive. A fee for a year at the academy even more so.

Which led to Xander picking up work as a salesman in the market, having the added benefit of allowing him to sleep indoors and eat a decent meal a day.

Unfortunately he had soon noticed that was pretty much all it paid for, new clothes and such accounting for most of the rest. Most of the things he had learnt of magic were from his memories, having picked up some of the theory behind it from his two friends in the academy.

'Speaking of them...' Xander shook his head looking up, 'Wasn't I supposed to meet them today...'

Exiting the bank he relaxed, plenty of time left. Unfortunately this gave him plenty of time to think of how little money he had for drinks in the bar he was meeting them at.

ôSigh...ö blinking slightly as his deep sigh of despair was mirrored from his left, turning his head he met the green eyes of a short brown haired girl.

Noticing a note with a lot of minuses in her hand he gave a small sad smile.

ôAre you also having money problems?ö

ôHuh?ö came from the girl.

ôWell, you came from the bank judging from the note-ö a quick nod of the head towards her hand ô-and you seem troubled, and I know that my bank account is crying.ö

ôMeh, it'll work out.ö the girl said, a guarded look on her face.

ôCheers to that then,ö Looking around Xander decided to get moving, even if he had time he might as well show up early, ôWell, good luck to youö he shot over his shoulder, walking away.

ôYeah, good luck to you too...ö the girl really didn't know what to think of him. Snapping away from thoughts of him and wheeling around towards an alley just as a horde of angry women came barreling through ô...great...ö she mumbled as they closed min on her.

..................

As Xander cruised through the alleys his shoulder bumped into someone ô..sorryö he said taking a sidestep to move on, only to feel a hand on his shoulder.

ô'Ey there, where do ya think your going, eh?ö

ô...this way?ö Xander said, nodding his head away from the guy.

ôAnd what abou' my clothes, huh?ö As the voice said this two shadows moved, two more men stepping out from the alley.

ôI mean, ya have totally ruined them, ya'll have to replace them, ya know?ö

As the mans friends closed the distance Xander sighed, he could see where this was going...

....................

ô... ya'll have to replace them, ya know?ö

Genie looked up slightly as the words reached her ears. Seeing three big muscled thugs having cornered a smaller figure and leaning heavily on him.

Reaching into her cloak she prepared to help him when he moved his hand and.

.............

Whoosh

With a small cupping gesture of his right hand, palm upwards, Xander summoned a Wisp. The thugs took a quick step away from him, one of them swearing wildly as he tried to put out the fire in his hair.

Seeing a fourth cloaked figure in a ready position behind them the brown haired teen decided he'd had enough of trouble. Whirling around he started a light jog away from the thugs and towards the bar.

.....

Genie felt one of her eyebrows rise in admiration as the green cloaked victim legged it down the alley.

One of the thugs took a step forward to take after him.

ôHEY, Y-ö

Fwoosh

and with a gentle sound and a waver of its flames, as if caught in a wind, the wisp their would be victim had summoned hit him in the stomach with a bolt of flames. The force behind it throwing him to the ground, even though the thug seemed to be unhurt, well, except for his ego and dignity.

ôHeh... scum...ö came from her lips as she looked at them, the wisp fading as the one on the ground scrambled to his feet.

ôHey, who the hell do you think you're talking to?ö came from one of them.

ôYeah, you'd better apologizeö came from another.

Smiling slightly, Genie raised her head, hood falling down revealing her red hair and dark skin.

'Hmm... I might see some action tonight after all...' taking a better stance at this thought, her smile widened a bit more, taking on the look of a predator having cornered its prey.

.......................

As Xander sat in the market the next day he still couldn't believe it, 'he didn't how up'. Now this might not have been so strange for your average student at the Magic Guild, as the training was hard you didn't have much time outside your studies. But... 'Louie never misses a chance to drink...' he was actually somewhat worried about his friend.

Sure, the most likely outcome were for him to have been thrown into a cell for the night by the city guard but still... Louie could find trouble anywhere.

Really the only good thing about the day before had been him getting the latest notes from Aila, bless her little bookworm heart. Seeing that the business was actually slower this day compared to the previous one he decided to get some studying done. He might have to return them this evening, having rescheduled his meeting with Aila and Louie.

.............

ôYo, Ailaö Xander said, sliding down in a chair to her left.

ôHmm?ö the redheaded magician said, looking up a bright smile formed on her faceöHello Xander.ö she then suddenly frowned ôUmm... have you seen Louie?ö

ôYou mean he's late... again?ö at Xanders question the redheaded magician just gave a small smile.

The brown haired teen just sighed, then slid his chair out, ôI'll go find him...ö Xander grumbled.

ôThanks, Xan! You're the best!ö came from behind him as he walked to the door.

Exiting the bar he stretched a bit, looking up and down the street. Spotting a mop of hair colored in a dark shade of blue he gave a small smile.

ôHey, Louie!ö waving his hand his friend soon noticed, a quick jog and he was right there besides Xander. ôLets step inside, Ailas waiting. A quick nod of agreement from Louie and they went in.

................

ôGAAAHH! IT'S THAT PERVERT!!

ô...Street brawler...ö

Xander blinked at the reactions Louies greeting to Aila had provoked from her table comanions. 'Ookay... I'm missing something here.'

The three women with Aila, one short somewhat familiar brown haired girl, a red haired woman with a sword, and a blond woman who looked like some type of spellcaster.

The blond looked mostly confused. The brownhaired one looked scandalize. The redhead looked cold and somewhat despising at Louie.

And Louie... he looked clueless... just like usual.

Xander could almost feel a headache coming up, his left hand idly scratching his hair as he observed the events unfolding at the table.

........

So far I think the biggest problem is the beginning of the fic. I'm not all to happy with the dialogues either. I should have up a bit more in two days, unless Ano-Nymph bugs me about his latest draft again. I hope you liked the fic and feel free to comment on my good/bad/lack of penmanship.

Hmm. Not much to say. The beginning seems fine to me. Xanders Halloween identity tries to send himself home and in doing so leaves the spells area of effect thus screwing with the destination of the spell since Xan Hari either never existed or was no longer in control of the spell. Other than that not bad. So the girls are going to have a better oppinion of Xander than Louie I take it?
Who's going to be Melissa's Champion? I could see it going either way but I personnally prefer Louie. Xander becomes the parties extra wizard?
