Puffing away on his early morning cigarette, Emiya Kiritsugu busied himself with reading the morning paper as his adopted son began cooking up a delicious breakfast. His wife and her maids continued to doze in their beds, the maids only because Shirou had tampered with their alarms to claim the kitchen. Sella wasn’t likely to take such a thing well, but Iri would just laugh it off, and that would be that.
Unfortunately, his tranquil morning wouldn’t last, as his daughter shot down the stairs, loudly proclaiming;
“I want to be a Pokémon trainer!â€
Kiritsugu sighed, putting his paper to the side, and stubbing out his cigarette, it wouldn’t do to smoke around his daughter after all.
Looking down at the eager face of his daughter, Kiritsugu contemplated whether he should allow this or not. True, he himself had been a trainer in his youth, although nowadays his Pokémon just sort of lounged around the house. Iri had thought of herself as a trainer, but really only had a single Pokémon that had never been in a battle before in it’s life. Sella and Leystritt had Pokémon of their own, but only really battled amongst themselves or against Shirou’s Pokémon when an argument broke out. Shirou had two Pokémon himself, but had never really left the small town they lived in. He did train the two of them, diligently but he had never left on the stereotypical journey real trainers embarked upon.
He knew it was common for children in small towns to want to go on a journey as a trainer, once they reached the age it was considered acceptable, as Illya was, but he didn’t want Illya out in the world where she could get hurt, or worse, a boyfriend!
“I suppose I can let you go, so long as Shirou agrees to go with you to keep an eye on you.†If Shirou was with her, then her virtue would be well protected. Besides, Shirou needed the real world experience, if he hoped to become a Police Officer; the Jenney’s had notoriously high standards after all.
“Well, I guess I could, Scyther and Charmeleon might enjoy the change of surroundings a little.†Shirou’s voice chimed in from behind them, as he started placing breakfast on the table. Smirking, Kiritsugu couldn’t keep a comment to himself;
“Plus, it will get you out the house long enough for Sella to cool off.†Shirou grinned, that was most definitely an upside. The maid had a nasty temper and while Shirou considered the opportunity to cook without her meddling or backseat cooking as worth it, he still wasn’t looking forward to her wrath.
“So, what are you going to do about a Pokémon though?†Shirou questioned his father, none of the Wild Pokémon in the area would be suitable as a starter except maybe the baby ones and trying to catch one of those would be rather difficult, since the parents tended to be rather protective.
“Easily covered, a friend of mine runs a Pokémon day care centre, and they occasionally get left with baby Pokémon that trainers can’t take care of.†Kiritsugu explained, walking over to the phone.
By this point, Illya had caught up on the conversation, having been distracted by devouring her Onii-Chan’s cooking; since it wasn’t often she got to do so, and had started bouncing around excitedly.
“Yay! Onii-Chan and I are going on an adventure!†Bouncing around, she ran off up to her room to pack her things. Chuckling, the red haired teen, shook his head at his sister exuberance.
“I guess I should go pack my things too. Maybe some pots and stove too?†Shirou mumbled to himself, digging around the cupboards to find the camping equipment he knew they had.

“Okay, I think we’ve travelled far enough to not have to worry about Sella chasing us down, how about a quick lesson on how to battle, and capture Pokémon?†Shirou asked his sister, since he wasn’t quite sure how much she actually knew.
Blinking at the sudden question, she just smiled, chiming out a small, sure thing Onii-Chan, before toss her Pokeball.
“Come on out, Berserker!â€
“Machaop!†The fighting type Pokémon, wasn’t exactly an ideal starter type, but it did seem to match Illya vicious streak well enough. The nickname was rather fitting as well, given that it had flown off the handle immediately after being transferred. Illya was apparently the only one the small Pokémon was willing to listen to as well, for some reason.
“Kaw!†As if reacting to the sudden presence of another Pokémon in its territory, a wild Spearow shot out of the trees, its sharp beak poised for its signature peck attack. Machop hastily dodged to the side, the bird missing him by bear inches.
“Alright now Illya, you’ve seen how Sella and myself have battled right? Your Machop is at a slight disadvantage in the forest, and Spearow are pretty agile in the air. Try and use your surroundings to land a hit.†Shirou instructed off to the side, as observed his sister’s first battle.
His first assessment was that he had probably understated the disadvantage that Machop was at. The Spearow was maintaining a high enough alttitude, that Berserker wasn’t able to reach it, while it swooped down to utilise its beak and claws to poor effect, dodging are the poor Fighting type’s punches, and kicks easily.
“Illya! Machop’s have powerful arms! If it can’t land a punch, try throwing some rocks, or tree branches!†He yelled.
Immediately latching on to his suggestion, the Machop grabbed the first large rock it could find, before launching at its airborne adversary, which panicked leaving it unable to dodge. The boulder impacted the poor Pokémon, sending it flying into a tree, knocking it over.
“Now! Throw the Pokeball at it!†The red haired teen yelled.
“Pokeball, go!†The young Einzbern laughed out, the Pokeball spinning from her hand, and capturing the near unconscious Spearow. A quick hug of her Machop, and it was safely back inside its Pokeball, as she ran back over to her brother.
“Good job, Illya.†He praised her, patting her head affectionately.
And that’s how it went for a few days, as they casually made their way to the neighbouring town. Shirou taught his sister the basics of Pokémon battles, as well as the basics of anything else Pokémon related. It wasn’t until a two days after Illya made her first successful capture, that they ran into trouble.
“Now what should we do with you?†A sleazy voice commented, and Shirou quickly pulled his sister behind a tree to prevent them from being seen, as he observed the situation he had blindly walked into.
An older man was dressed in the stereotypical uniform of the criminal group Team Rocket, along with two other slightly younger men who stood off to the side, laughing. What really caught his attention, however, was the girl currently struggling to get free of the older criminal’s grip. She was probably around his age, if not a little older. She was wearing a black cap, with an intricate gold design printed on it, and mysteriously a long strand of blond hair, probably an ahoge, sticking out of the front, and a ponytail sticking out from the back. A blue tracksuit jumper with a pair of gold stripes trailing down both arms. Strangely she was wearing a pair of rather short shorts, and hiking boots, despite the chill in the air.
There was also a scarf lying discarded on the ground that matched the rest of her outfit, leading him to believe it was hers and had been thrown aside from the man who had grabbed her.
“It would be a shame to waste someone as pretty as you…†Shirou knew exactly where this man was heading with that statement, even as the hand that wasn’t keeping the girl pressed against the tree went to grope her chest.
“Stay here.†He instructed Illya, as he quickly got out from his hiding place, making a beeline from the group, and decking the wannabe rapist in the face. The force of the blow was enough to knock the man a meter back, allowing the girl to drop safely to the ground, coughing away as she tried to desperately pull air back into her lungs.
“You little brat…†blood flowing freely from his nose, the Team Rocket grunt got back to his feet, his teammates no longer laughing, as the each pulled a Pokeball from their belts.
“We’re gonna make you regret that.†They weren’t laughing anymore. The sadistic cheer that had painted their faces moments previously, evaporated, leaving only a cold cruelty that did nothing to hide their intent to kill.
Throwing the balls without a word, the monsters contained within were released.
A Sunflora, Beedrill and Durant materialised in a burst of light, looking fairly intimidating.
Under normal circumstances, Shirou probably would have grabbed the girl and ran at this point. He was outnumbered, his sister wasn’t known for patience, and would probably try to join in, if a prolonged battle were to take place plus, he couldn't keep an eye on the trainers, and the Pokémon at the same time.
Fortunately for Shirou, however, was each of the Pokémon that his opponents had sent out, possessed the same weakness.
Fire.
And he happened to possess a rather potent fire type Pokémon. Smirking slightly, he pulled the Great Ball from his belt, hurling it towards his advocacies.
Materialising in the same burst of light as its opponents, the gold sheen from Chameleon’s skin sparkled briefly in the sunlight.
“Flamethrower.â€
