From The Guardian: Mumbling actors, bad speakers or lazy listeners? Why everyone is watching TV with subtitles on

This is just soooo goddamn true. It seems to have gotten worse and worse for me. As a child, I could understand most of the dialogue in movies and TV shows. Now, I find myself struggling a lot more. The same seems to go for a lot of anime, too, to the point there are some shows that I have to watch in sub because Crunchyroll still doesn't have English dub subtitling. That I also watch a decent amount of stuff on tablet probably doesn't help.

I have a constant ringing in my ears, so I sometimes can't hear a damn thing other than it. Doesn't help that people speak just below what I can hear and I have to constantly go "WHAT?!"

Honestly, I just chalk it up to me getting old.

Maybe I should go to the doctor's office and get my ears cleaned out?

I watch tv with the subtitles on, because I do have problems with my hearing sometimes. Sometimes, it's just because it's hard to understand what the actors are saying when they speak too fast.

But I do notice that sometimes, the subs don't match what the actors are saying. I don't mean shortening sentences - I understand that; sometimes the lines just are completely different that the spoken line. It's odd.

You might have tinnitus, then?

Live-action TV I see a little bit of omitting words here and there, and occasionally missing half sentences. But don't think I've seen likes completely different. But Netflix anime subs are notoriously bad for this, to the point I feel like they're just using the subtitles from the Japanese dubbing and not bothering to update them for English voicing.
