Galaxy Angel

Hoo boy... not another "boo hoo why doesn't my favorite animu have more fans?" thread.

Actually, I'm curious... just how many Galaxy Angel fans are there outside of Japan? The series seems to be hugely popular on 4chan (although given the nature of the forum, that could well be just a small number of extremely vocal fans) but on the 'Net at large it's a nonentity. Not that this is any kind of scientific gauge of fandom size, but FFN only has 20-odd GA fics, and the other fanfic archives are even drier. Bandai abandoned what was the official English-language homepage (www.galaxyangel.net) long ago, and now seems to be on the point of abandoning the license altogether out of lack of customer interest.

I don't know. I haven't heard of the series before until I came across a semi-hentai fan made 'dating' game on the Internet. Beyond that, I haven't heard much about it.

They probably want to abandon it because it's boring, nonsensical trash. :D

Actually, I take it back, it's probably not boring, but I honestly don't remember the episodes I watched because it was so shallow and forgettable.

In short, I suppose, I'm not a fan...

Haven't seen it, although I recall downloading, then burning it a LOOONG time ago. Something that's probably just lying about because of my laziness. I've seen lots of stuff on 4chan of it (some of the images ARE pretty cute. :p), but I've not really ever felt a great need to view it.

So, no, not a fan. ^^;; Sowwy.

Heh. I have seen the manga at Borders though. But looking through wikipedia, it would be one of the LAST series I would get. From the sounds of it, other than having some VERY pretty artwork, it isn't a series that I would waste my money on. Or my precious time downloading. Seems to be a pretty shallow series despite the pretty art. <_<

What I will spend my money on, stuff that's actually worth it. Like the Bleach mangas. :p And due to recent quality issues, Naruto has been taken off that list. <_<

Seen it. Liked it.

Not liked it to pieces, but it was certainly worth watching I thought.

It's got that Seinfeld:ish 'a show about nothing' feel to it. Imagine what Azumanga Daioh would be if it took place in a space military organisation instead of an earthbound school and you get pretty close to what Galaxy Angel is like.

Somewhat uneven though, most episodes are merely funny, others are so funny that it boggles belief and some are merely 'meh'.

I've only watched the first three seasons though, so I dunno how the fourth season matches up with the rest.

There are the games, too. Which are a mix between RPG, dating sim, and other stuff.

Oh, and there is a yaoifan in there too.

Maybe I'm just getting too old and jaded for "serious" anime. The recent trend of Seinfeld-esque (as Hawk so aptly puts it) character comedies--Azumanga Daioh, Strawberry Marshmallow, Galaxy Angel--are all that's keeping my interest in anime alive. The last non-comedy anime I enjoyed was Nanoha--I was amused by how it deconstructs the mahou shoujo genre, much the way Evangelion did to super robots a decade ago.

I wouldn't compare GA to Azu, though--they're both episodic character comedies, but the resemblance stops there. Azumanga has a certain quality of... down-to-earth-ness and "gentleness" to it that's very distinctive and unusual in anime. Azumanga reminds me much more of Calvin & Hobbes than of anything else to come out of Japan (that I've seen). On the other hand GA is, yes, very much like a sci-fi Seinfeld. Or one of those insane British comedies.

The GA games are a totally different entity from the anime. I'm not sure how they ended up so different. The games are basically Sakura Taisen in space--a tactical battle game fused with a get-the-girl-of-your-choice (non-pornographic) visual novel. Although ostensibly the anime tells the story of what the Angels were up to just before the events of the first game take place, in reality the only common point between the anime and game universes is the Angels themselves, and even there their personality traits are exaggerated to the point of unrecognizability in the anime as compared with the games.

They're finally making an English translation for the game!

I might play the game since I like 'dating sims' to an extent. Despite the lack of pr0n. :p Not sure about the series still. I might catch a few just to see what it is like. Though I still doubt I will buy it.

Well, half the chicks are hot and the other half is loli-cute, so... you'll probably be satisfied.

Although... there's an awful lot of futanari doujin about it, and too little actual straight stuff.

And is it me, or the characters are awfully young?

I'm pretty sure Mint and Vanilla are, but I'm also fairl certain that Ranpha, Millefeuille, and Forte are of age.

Character ages at the time of the first game:

Milfeulle: 17
Ranpha: 18
Mint: 16
Forte: 22
Vanilla: 13

So they're in the same ballpark as the Sakura Taisen girls--mostly high school age, with one outlier in either direction.

I don't think they ever really explain why Mint is so tiny for her age, but in Galaxy Angel II (where the original Angels appear as supporting characters) she's no taller at 20 than she was at 16. Vanilla, on the other hand, is a head taller and almost as curvaceous as Milfeulle in the sequel.

It took me this long to notice that the male protagonist of the GA games has the same VA as Keitaro. Bow before my obliviousness.

Tact sounds like Keitaro?

I don't know whether to laugh (personalities and situations are complete opposites) or to cry (Keitaro sounded like SHUN from Saint Seiya... who is no example of masculinity, yanno).

I read the first Galaxy Angel manga. It was good, but i have others i like a lot more and limited funds so I didn't really get into Galaxy Angel.

Well... I have the series (well, all the 1st season and 2nd, not further).

I thought it was ok for a laugh, but not great in any area. The problem is it is a short length per episode series designed strictly for shallow slapstick comedy. Many of the episodes are lame and or cliche.

feeling bored, i took the liberty of looking up Yuji Ueda (Keitaro/Takuto's VA) in wikipedia
  • Here's a small list of his other more famous voice jobs:
  • Amiboshi & Suboshi from Fushigi Yuugi
  • Sagara Sousuke from Rurouni Kenshin
  • Tenkawa Akito from Nadesico
  • Showa Sawamura from Rival Schools/Project Justice
  • Zappa from Guilty Gear XX
