Take the characters, situations, and general concepts from the Harry Potter books, and imagine what the series would be like if it were written by Ken Akamatsu, who gave us Love Hina and Negima.

EDIT: Should this be here, or in Ideas?

Damn.

Mereo beat me to it...

Negima IS Harry Potter written by Akamatsu.

Only reason that he doesn't have a scar, is that J. K. Rowling's lawyers would descend upon him like starving lions on a crippled gazelle...

Negima is a lot farther from Harry Potter than the OP requires. It uses one vaguely similar character, and contains magic, a school, and a very old old Headmaster, but that's about it. Negi isn't a student, isn't in Scotland, and we see no Hermione or Ron equivalents, unless you count Anya.

Its a better story, but its NOT Harry Potter as written by Akamatsu.

Nah, they're pretty different. The entire structure of the stories is vastly different; the only similarities are (a) it's set in a school, and (B) there's a hidden magical world with mages/wizards. Oh, and both the characters are orphans.

EDIT: Okay, the old-mage-headmaster is a fourth similarity.

Now, Emily Drake's series - THAT is Harry Potter set in America. And if she could do it without getting flak from lawyer-types, Akamatsu has nothing to worry about.

Negima = Harry Potter + Harem (fan-service included) + Technology + Comedy + Martial Arts

It is due to HP's influence that Negi is from Wales, a 10 year old boy that is wearing glasses and can do magic with a tragic past (if a whole town get destroyed and all except himself and his sister was turned into stone is not tragic then I dunno what is.). Ken Akamatsu admitted in his interview that Negima was created based on HP as well.

Akamatu stole from every-fscking-where with Negima. From HP to Naruto to Ranma 1/2 to Inuyasha, and probably more I can't recall at the moment.

Now, taking HP's characters and setting and converting things to Akamatsu-style would be quite fun. And there'd be more nudity involved, which is always a plus.
