Since the last poster has kindly forgotten to suggest the next game, I'm shamelessly going to do it.

GAME: Doom (any of the series)
DEVELOPER: Nintendo

I did not, I was addressing the same game the poster before me did, and since his ideas were unanswered, I figured his ideas should go first.

Hmm, an epic 3d adventure across the surface of mars (for the first game at least). You are a young colonist helping your father with the terraforming of the world while your mother explores the ruins of a lost civilization. Somethign goes wrong and the ancient autonomous defenses of that civilization come to life, rounding up the colonist and imprisoning them, leaving only you free thanks to power of the last Princess of these lost people. Her spirt grants you access to the tools of the ancients which you use to travel across the land to various sites, shutting down the Defense system node by node and freeing your friends.

I have two, take your pick

Assassin's Creed without the blood and more artsy, but as the series progresses, the setting become so convoluted and the gameplay so uninnovative that IGN and Gamespot give it good marks and it appeals to the larger market, but not for people who want to see progression in games.

Game: Final Fantasy VI

Game: Ar Tonelico series
Developer: Team Ninja (original team with Tomonobu 'pizza face' Itagaki, haha!)
Male characters would be superbadass killing machines, and female characters... uh... would be distressed damsels with lovely figures to rescue? Seriously, even Rachel who is supposed to be competent and wields a two-handed battleaxe larger than she is needs rescuing...

Game: Final Fantasy VI

Developer: Irrational Games/Demiurge Studios
...Strago would be some kind of big badass mutated/modified creature protecting Relm at all times, and Relm would be a creepy little girl with special powers (Sketch works fine).

Also, Edgar would totally turn out to be affably evil in the end.

Hmmm

GAME: Dead Space

DEVELOPER: IREM (of R-Type fame)

Alternatively:

GAME: Digimon

DEVELOPER: Valve

A thinking-man's Pokemon. You pick your partner based on a series of puzzles and personality tests, getting a starter Digimon who is either cerebral, impetuous, maniacal, absent-minded or a joker. However, as soon as you, one of the first humans, and the first child to access the Digital World, receive him/her a flux puts you in a dormant data-like state, waking up twelve years later. Now, the world is dictated by the fist of the Odaiba Corporation and the Masters, who are aiming to access the forbidden graveyard of data, the Dark Ocean.

The ability to Digivolve has been locked to but a select few privileged castes... except for you and your Digimon, who were one of the first to be hybridized. Joining the resistance, you must race against time before the Dark Ocean opens... and all the horrors within are unleashed.

Oversight on my part then. I apologize.

... and now to get back on track;

A D&D style role-playing game where a nameless protagonist wakes up on an island with an unexplainable urge to visit new places. The player normally gets frustrated at the limited magic uses a character has. Also; game-control can shift to anyone in the current party. Story ends with a final boss showdown that leaves plenty of room for sequels.

... and speaking of sequels, many of them will exist. The side-ones are usually in the form of card-games.

A somewhat off beat adventure that starts with the Queens Guard (2 males 2 females) failing to protect her from assassins and then going on a series of missions across, over and under the vast city to find the ones responsible and bring them to justice. Players could choose one of the very different former Guardians and go it alone or team up with friends to bring the Empresses killers to justice.

Developer: Square-Enix

Game: Dirge of Cerberus
