You did come in second; don't take it too hard. The way I see it, taking a non-standard or metaphoric slant on the theme is a risky gambit. If you pull it off, people are going to be impressed. They're going to go, 'that's clever; have some points'. If you fail (or even just pull a judge who don't 'get' it) you're going to loose a few points. You win some, you loose some.
So, talked to Watashiwa... will keep on trying and throwing words against wall and see what happens. Because it'd kind of suck if I just leave after four years of throwing words at Iron fic.
I suppose I should be glad I wasn't feeling really out of it and doing a haiku for this entry like I have done in the past.
Also note that I have no problems with low scores as I'm not bitching about the writing proficiency grade, only thematics. I still hold that going metaphorical should not get a downgrade on concept alone.
Psh. You're fine. It's been so long since I wrote fanfiction that I forgot to actually, you know, come up with my own story. I needed something like this to get back into the swing of things.
The issue with spending half the fic explaining where we are is that I realized like halfway through, "Wait a minute, there are some Philistines who don't read the Dresden Files. Shit." And then I went back and added in a lot of clarifying details so the reflection makes more sense...
It didn't turn out well. Didn't help that I tried to write in first person, like Butcher does. I've very little experience with that format.
