IRON FIC

Zephyrus

Searching for the six-fingered man.
I'm going to slap you all in the face with my PEN.

(I bet that's not what you thought I was going to say, eh? ;D)

I thought you were going along the lines of sitting on the toilet writing.

I can judge if the need arises. I'm not the most active poster but I'm pretty sure I've judged one or two of these before on oTFF.

Last year I fell off the "participate in every damn single one" boat, so I thought I'd try to do that this year. I also thought that I'd like to write them all in the same fandom and make them part of the same narrative continuity somehow? I dunno. But I definitely wanted to participate in every one.

...Except my brother is getting married on the 25th, so I will be busy with that all day. Oh well.

Hey, congrats to him.

It'll be really cool if you manage to pull off your self-imposed challenge; might take a bit of stretching to make some of the event-specific challenges work, but I'll try not to make them wholly incompatible.

Wata - I think we'll need the time that you're planning on doing this thing, so that we can prepare accordingly.

11AM PST, as usual.
Watashiwa, I'm interested in taking part but I'm a bit confused about how things work. Sometime between now and Saturday could you write a single post containing all the information about Iron Fic -rules, requirements, where posts go etc? I think it would be useful for new members and people who've never taken part before like me.

Iron Fic is an ongoing effort to increase the fanfiction output of the Fanfiction Forum over the summer months. It was inspired by Iron Chef, hence the name.

Here's the way it works: I make a new thread with a challenge in it, "write a fic using _________ idea or plot device". Writers interested in participating have four hours to write a story using that theme, after which judges grade the fic in five categories out of twenty, leading to a cummulative score of 100 points. A note to returning participants, and judges in particular: DEPTH has been folded into STORY. The new third category taking its place is SOURCE. The categories are:

WRITING PROFICIENCY: The author's grasp of the English language. Spelling and grammar mistakes, malapropers, nonsensical phrasing and other mechanical failures take points away from this.

THEME: The use of the theme in the story. Is it appropriate, or a stretch? Is the author too literal in their interpretation, or too high-concept?

SOURCE: How the source material is presented in the fanfiction. This category should be interpreted in different ways by judges depending on whether or not you are familiar with the fandom.

If you ARE: Are the characters recognizably in-character? Is there bashing or fanwank involved, and is it appropriate? If the story is AU/a fusion, are the changes consistent, explained; does it work?

If you are NOT: Does the story work anyway? Are you interested in getting into the series?

STORY: The story on its own merits. Is it fun to read and demonstrate understanding of the setting and characters? Would you like to see it continued? Does it have depth?

OTHER, or PERSONAL OPINION: Anything else influencing your feelings on the story, particularly your personal liking for the story, goes here.

THE RULES
--This is a FANFICTION contest; original fiction is not a valid submission.
--You have until the full time is up to make changes. Once time is up, if you get hit for an easy mistake, tough. Note too that everyone can see when you've saved edits.
--Entries are to be worksafe. No graphic sex scenes, or descriptions of gore-soaked violence. If it'd get an R rating, tone it down or be very careful.
--Submissions should go into the category appropriate to a fanfic of its kind. Based on a game? Game section. Negima goes to Ken Akamatsu, etc. Please include [IF] or [Iron Fic] in your thread title.
--Post a link to your submission in the challenge thread; this makes life and judging a lot easier.
--NEW RULE: A story submitted after the deadline receives a two-point penalty for every hour it is late by, rounded up. The final cut off is ten hours late (a twenty point penalty).
--If you've got any questions, ask in this thread. I'll keep this updated going forward.

For now, Iron Fic is due to take place on Saturday may 25th at 11AM Pacific Standard Time. If you aren't sure what time that is in your part of the world, use the Timezone Converter to check.

This is stupid and is going to be abused, and I can't believe you're actually still using it.

Also, you should try and jump on IRC if you can manage to stay on it for a few minutes, have something to show you.

Late submissions are all well and good, but what about edits? Do we let people make edits after the initial limit and take a late penalty?
EDIT: It does seem to say that people cannot do this, but I would personally prefer a specific mention.

Getting close now...I added a quick explanation of posting a submission to the rules; basically, you make a new preview thread and then link to it.

About ten hours to the contest. Judges will be Latewave, Ninsaneja and Vog, who kindly volunteered. I will post the thread, but I won't be around to declare writing period closed; I will be away (at an anime convention *cough*). If you have questions ask them now or try your luck on #TFF, which has a large number of previous IF participants.

Watashiwa! Even before the new Iron Fic deflowers this forum, you're ALREADY slacking off! For shame!

A million thumbs-up for this.

It's probably written somewhere, but are there limits on levels explicit content such as sex and gratuitious violence?

You aren't allowed to link restricted section stuff outside of that section, and you aren't allowed to post adult content outside of that section, so technically you can't submit adult content for iron fic through procedural interpretation of the rules.
