Kickstarters

Well this is a new one. Never seen a developer give up on their Kickstarter project before. In the unlikely event that you were following Old School RPG, re-christened Shaker a little over a week ago, you might be surprised to hear that the creators have given up on the project. They had a quarter of a million dollars and a target of $1M (achievable if they started really leveraging their credentials), but they had some truly ambitious stretch goals that I think they had their hearts set on. They said that they plan to try again after refining it, here's hoping that they're serious next time.

Making up for their exit is Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption by Quest for Glory creators Lori and Corey Cole, a spiritual successor to that series. If you don't know Quest for Glory... well, I'm not surprised. It was a Sierra franchise that mixed Sierra's ludicrously unfair adventure game design with RPG mechanics with some success. I think it's because the puns were so awful that Piers Antony would have hesitated to put them in Xanth, as well as how the games handled the concept of heroism itself. Q4GIV in particular had some interesting things to say about heroes, villains and why you do the bad things you do. Here's wishing them the best of luck, and my $20.

Also, first failed Kickstarter game that got its funding:

Oh god that's right, you're a Sierra survivor. Tell us straight old timer, how bad were the good old days?

And now, a different kind of Kickstarter. One that will make you question Kickstarter's approval process.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1376466869/lore

No seriously. What the Hell? $1,500,000 goal... highest reward tier is $150.

And I didn't even mention the actual pitch.

And someone did pledge $150. Don't know who the bigger troll is here. The person that pitched $150, or the person that made the KS in the first place.

So Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is still going forward. It's a RPG/adventure game hybrid by the awesome folks who did Sierra's Quest For Glory. Going into the last week it's just past the halfway mark, which doesn't exactly bode well for it. Which is a shame, since I think it's quite promising.

In addition to the above, I've got another Kickstarter for you lot: an arcade racer called Distance. Looks pretty wild, and it's got about one more day to go.

Addendum: Distance has already met its goal, donate only if you want the finished product. Hero-U has not, and consider supporting that instead if you like both RPGs and racers.

Hero U is now a mere 80,000 away from hitting it's goal. The good news is, especially factoring a last minute rush, it should make it. Only a sudden stop in momentum of pledges will kill it.

The bad news? This is like Two Guys from Andromeda here. Get the minimum game in quite literally the last few days yes. But stretch goals? Not going to happen. Pity because we all know, stretch goals only mean a better game. I know they have plans for them. But with simply hitting the goal an issue (one that I'm confident will happen anyways), can't expect much above that.

And Star Citizen, which has, not only surpassed its Kickstarter goal, including Paypal (the original crowd funding source for them before the fans demanded Kickstarter), they are already 4 million!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/st...itizen?ref=live

35 hours left as the time of writing this.

They are still going forward with stretch goals with Paypal through their official website. Though to be perfectly honest, besides the fact that I'm not expecting them to hit any of them since they don't have the Kickstarter thing supporting it, the only one that really interest me would be the voice acting. The first stretch goal is a pet meep for Shawn. Which could be cool. But 'seems' small considering that it's at the 500,000 level. 600,000 we get voice acting. While at 700,000 we get translations to different languages. Besides the Meeps and the voice acting, kind of slim pickings in terms of incentives to get them. I was expecting stuff like more levels or improved artwork.

Oh well. The fact that it succeeded still warms my heart. All the old Sierra Adventure Game makers are back!

First off, something new Wildman from Gas Powered Games.

A look at a project you may have missed. Planetary Annihilation

And a quick look at TAKEDOWN

New Kickstarter time? New Kickstarter time. This one's called Unwritten: That Which Happened, and it seems to be a hybrid of Roguealike and King of Dragon Pass, a la FTL. You're members of a nomadic tundra tribe who have decided to cross the land to the mountain where your god resides, where you plan on telling the history of your people. Along the way you have to fight to survive and interact with both the landscape and other tribes, and while you could screw them over or conquer them, what if your god doesn't agree with those decisions? After all, he's randomly generated like the rest of the world!

Other interesting features include story based diplomacy where your diplomats engage with other tribes by telling your stories, a generational system where losing starts you off with a single fragment of your last game now grown to foundational legend, and really cool art based on Balinese shadow puppets.

This one's got a week to go and is about halfway there.

There are tears in my eyes as I post this: Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Chapters is on Kickstarter. Closure, in my Dreamfall? YES.

Rocks will fall. Everyone will die.
The ending will be a choice of three colors.
The protagonist will get a British-Punk redesign, swear a lot but never actually use Brit slang.
It was all a dream.
Everyone was really in purgatory despite the director saying they weren't for 5 seasons.
A character will find their own dead body and nothing will be explained.

Pick one. It'll be your closure.

They put out the first gameplay video for backers of wasteland 2.

Looks fantastic, pretty much everything I'd hopped for. Can't wait to get my copy!

So the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment now has a live Kickstarter. It's called Torment: Tides of Numanera, and it's set in Monte Cook's Numanera setting. Monte Cook wrote for the old Planescape setting and is responsible for most of DnD 3.x. It's being done by inXile; since the development work on Wasteland 2 is done they want to move the concept folks on to Torment 2. Backed instantly, of course.

It's probably going to hit its funding goal today. ^_^

Before I forget, the guys who did Sequence (that DDR RPG on XBLA and PC) are Kickstarting There Came An Echo, their next game. Wil Wheaton's in it, and it looks like Ronald Jenkees is on board again.

Net Gain: Corporate Espionage is apparently a game by some dudes from /tg/; based on a cyberpunk setting they've been outlining for a few years now.

Oh, and Dreamfall Chapters is three days from completion. If they hit $2M they're going to start work on the conclusion to April's story in addition to Zoe's (that'll be a separate game though, and they said they'll be doing that later anyway).

:blue: I'm... I'm so happy I was born in 1988. My generation may have to face a crisis of identity and morals and economics, but we have the internet, and we can enjoy so many creative minds... I'm happy.

Dreamfall's got three hours left. I was planning to do a larger KS post but this kinda matters right now. Support this if you support anything this month (Torment will be around for a week next month).

I think it's time to highlight some new Kickstarters.

Jagged Alliance is getting a prequel. It looks like it's set during the Cold War, and it's being done by the people in charge of the Space Hulk game.

A.N.N.E. desperately wants to be a Super Nintendo game. It wants to be Super Metroid most of all, but there's some R-Type in there too. Certainly looks interesting.

Divinity Original Sin looks pretty good. It's another prequel, set waaaay before Divine Divinity. They're claiming inspiration from Ultima VII in how they want the gameworld to feel immersive and alive. This one's got 20 hours to go.

Worlds of Magic is a spiritual successor to the Civilization-with-magic Masters of Magic series. Looks like it's doing well, and I know that the old games were pretty good.

Pre-Apocalypse is a bit more my style. Another 4X game, this one about assuming the reigns of a dying empire and trying to avert imminent apocalypse.

The Realm is an adventure game. An absolutely beautiful one. Point and click, set in a future fantasy England.

Chasm is another Metroidvania, this one in the Roguealike vein. Randomly generated sidescrolling worlds to adventure in. Sounds sort of like A Valley Without Wind.
