I know the English version stated she was a freelance writer, but I heard that it was different int he Japanaes version. Anyone know if this was correct, and what she really did? I heard it was basically "slacker".

I've only ever heard of the freelance writer gig, although later in the manga she works for Haruka at the teahouse, before she moves out of the dorms in vol 14.

The novel also has he working part time at a friends club, 'Bunny and Turtle'.

I take it she basically does whatever so movie, working part time here and there to make ends meet when not wasting money gambling or on booze. Apparently, this sometimes involve some aspect of travel.

I think the term used is Freeter
the word is used to describe people between 15 and 35 who lack full-time employment or are unemployed, excluding housewives and students; may also be described as underemployed or freelance workers.

These people do not start a career after high school or university, but instead earn money from low skilled and low paid jobs.

Of course, as is the grand joke of the universe, it would in America make her qualified for multiple management positions. After all, hiring standards for an unusually large number of retail jobs require a minimum of 2-3 years prior working experience since 2007. Even the minimum wage jobs.
