"Have a good evening. See you tomorrow."
"U-um... Would you... would you like to go out with m-the rest of us later?"
"I'm sorry; I have some business to take care of. Maybe another time."
"Ah, I see..."
Due forced a smile as she watches the young man visibly deflate in front of her. Waving goodbye to her "coworkers", she quickly walks to the parking lot to look for "her" car. Her hand fumbled a bit when she tried to unlock the door, but soon she was driving to the apartment she now inhabits. She was grinding her teethes the whole ride.
It wasn't until she was safely inside "her" apartment that she stopped. Plopping down on the sofa, she closed her eyes and let out a sigh of frustration. She knew the man had a crush on her. No, on the woman named Miriam, she corrected herself. And therein lays the crux of the problem: She was not Miriam, merely wearing her face.
Frankly, she was tired. Tired of the smiles, of the congratulations, of the friendship, of the love directed toward her. Because she knew it was not for her. It was for the person whose face she's wearing at the time. A nun, an officer, an aide, a florist, etc...
Perhaps she was bitter about it too. It would explain why she took delight in destroying those bonds. She envied them, being able to live so carefree, so happy with each other, to be real.
Above all though, she was lonely. Only coldness awaits her each night, in a land far away from home, in a place she could not even call her own. Oh she could try and reach out, but what would be the point? It was not Due herself that they were interested in, it was the person she's impersonating.
It was not the first time, and she doubt it's the last, she felt like this. How long has it been, since she truly wore her own face? How long has it been since she started these long term assignments? It felt like a lifetime to her. Or several, considering the number of disguises she went through.
She loved her father and her sisters dearly, and would do anything for them. But she cannot help but wonder of a different life. A life where she doesn't have to wear someone else face. A life where she can be who she is, and enjoy everything it can give. A life where she can step out in the light and not stay in the shadow behind the scenes.
A life as a real person, and not a fake.
She knew that it would end when her father win. Then, she can finally meet her sisters, and honestly introduces herself as Due, and not the name of somebody else. It was another reason why she worked so hard to make her disguises perfect. Too perfect, perhaps.
Even so, she can't help but dream. After all, there is no rule that forbid people from dreaming, even a shadow such as herself.
Until that day where she can finally be herself, she would endure this lonely and bitter existence and takes solace in her dreams.
