Light and Dark (Two against Time)

#1
Setsuna Meioh, aka Sailor Pluto, Guardian of the Time Gates, and many other associated titles, was an enigma to even her closest friends. Anyone who met her would describe her as cold as pack ice, and even the Outer Sailor Senshi thought that she could be ruthless when it came to preserving the timeline. While this was true, only two or three people had ever really tried to break through the armour that surrounded her, and get to the real Setsuna.

The truth was, Setsuna Meioh was lonely, terribly lonely. As the last survivor of the Silver Millennium, and nearly immortal due to her extended vigils with the Gates of Time, the duty that Queen Serenity had given her wore down on her psyche. Indeed, many were the time when she'd considered packing in the job and finding a successor; particularly after a journey into Italy in 1943, where to eliminate an indirect threat to the timeline, she'd had to... remove an honourable man from existence. She could still see the fear in the eyes of that Canadian officer , as her Dead Scream annihilated first the pistol in his hand, then his arm, and then the rest of him, leaving only a pair of smoking boots and a half-melted cap badge.

Setsuna looked out over the timelines. She knew the Ancient Enemy would rise again soon, and the Senshi would be re-awakened, but for now, everything was proceeding smoothly. In fact, she decided, it was time she had a much overdue holiday. Ordering the gates to locate somewhere she could go to unwind, she soon located a "Hinata Lodge" in Kanagawa Prefecture.

'A hot springs resort.... Perfect.' she decided. She picked up the telephone to make a reservation.

=====================================================

Setsuna sat in the park, stretching out her legs as she watched three children play in the nearby sandbox. One of them, a little girl with brown hair and deep soulful eyes was helping a boy make a sandcastle while a toddler played with the older girls' Liddo-kun doll.

"Hey, Kei-kun?" The girl asked the boy as they finished smoothing out the dome of the castle. "Did you know that if two people who love each other go to Tokyo University together, they'll live happily ever after?"

Setsuna stiffened in shock. The air, at least to her rarefied senses, was becoming heavy with Chaos Magic, and it was centred over the three children in the sandbox. She instinctively reached for her Henshin Rod, in case something terrible occurred.

Unaware of this, the children continued to play in the sandbox, before the brown-haired girl leaned over and impulsively kissed 'Kei-kun' on the cheek, making him blush. "When we grow up, let's go to Tokyo University together, 'kay?" she smiled. 'Kei-kun' blinked, but then nodded. The little toddler perked up then and began to say "Toudai!" in a cheery way.

Setsuna could only watch in dismay, as the Chaos Magic struck the two older children, affecting them in only who knew what ways. She looked up as she saw the parents of the two girls, and the boys' grandmother, arrive to pick them up.

"Naru! Mutsumi! Keitaro!" the respective sets of adults called. The young boy, whose name was Keitaro Urashima, stood up and waved to his grandmother. "I gotta go now Mu-chan, Na-chan..." he said sadly, before brightening. "But we can come and play here tomorrow, right?"

The girl with dark brown hair, Mutsumi Otohime, smiled and nodded. "Of course, Kei-kun..."

"Toudai! Toudai!" the last of the group, Naru Narusegawa, giggled in agreement.

=====================================================

It was a deeply troubled Setsuna Meioh who returned to the Gates of Time now. She paced backwards and forwards in front of the Gate for a long time, before turning to face the computer system that was integrated into it. Setting at the worktop, she began to create files for all three of those children. She hated when this occured, but the protocols for these occasions was absolute: Anyone exposed to Chaos Energy, no matter how small, had to be filed, investigated, and then either removed from the timeline entirely, or neutralised in some other way. Thankfully for her, the Tokyo University promise that Keitaro and Mutsumi had entered into had bled the worst of the Chaos Magic away. Nonetheless, they would both lead chaotic lives for as long as they lived... Needless to say, in that moment, Setsuna hated her job more than she ever had. Setting the computer to scan the timelines, with particular parameters to see what effect those three children would have, she went to find something to drink. The binge that she went on was truly epic.

=====================================================

Time passed; an instant, or an age. It was all the same at the Gates of Time. Setsuna Meioh looked at her files once again, wanting to make sure that everything would be in readiness for when she would step into her role as Advisor to the reborn Princess Serenity. She navigated to the Long Term Storage Files, in which she kept the most important documents: plans for Crystal Tokyo, archival information about the Senshi's past lives, and last but not least, the files of Keitaro Urashima and Mutsumi Otohime. Reading over them was a gruelling task. Privately, Setsuna was amazed that the two of them had become fundamentally good people, given the sheer hell that they'd both been put through.

Keitaro Urashima had been cursed that day long ago by a cocktail of myopia, bad luck, and low-grade dyspraxia. Aside from only his adopted sister Kanako (a somewhat left-handed blessing of the Chaos Magic had left him with a kind nature, and a dogged determination that could win people over, not too mention an almost comical level of indestructibility), no girl had ever been nice to him, and his academic scores had ever so slowly sank down, down, down... And it got worse.

Mutsumi Otohime had grown to be a kind, loving, and gentle woman, but was as fragile as a snowflake, and had once been described unkindly (though not without an element of truth) as being 'Mad as a Hatter'. Indeed, Setsuna had once watched Mutsumi for a whole day, and had been shocked by the amount of chaos that one woman had created. In the space of doing an hours' shopping, she'd fainted once, requiring a paramedic unit to revive her; caused a major traffic accident after dazedly wandering across a road; caused a police officer, a priest, and a shop assistant to have nervous breakdowns; and bought out an entire greengrocers' shop of watermelon. And that was just on one day!

Setsuna shook a little as she recalled that day. Yes, she reflected, those two were dangerous, mostly to themselves She ruminated upon this. All of a sudden, an epiphany struck her. Walking back over to the gates, she entered a series of equations into the device, and watched the numbers roll over with increasing interest.

It was as she'd suspected. For some time now she'd wondered why the two of them were effected by that day. Now she knew. Both of them had traces of Silver Millennium energy in their bodies. Most interestingly, though, was that they seemed to be able to unconsciously amplify the ambient energies in their surroundings.

"Of course... That's why they were exposed... Whoever did it wanted a natural chaos generator to mask their actions..." she considered. Focussing on Keitaro once again, she caught him on the telephone, speaking to his grandmother. Setsuna knew how the timeline was to play out from here; Keitaro would go to Hinata, infuriate most of the residents of the lodge-turned-dorm, but eventually bring them around. But, unfortunately, he'd mix up who his 'Promise Girl' was, and end up with a thoroughly unsuitable girl. To be fair, Naru Narusegawa was a well-meaning girl, but she was too insecure, and violent for a gentle, if clumsy, soul like Keitaro.

Setsuna glanced at the tracer on Mutsumi Otohime, and decided. She began to operate the Timegates.

=====================================================

Keitaro Urashima sighed discontentedly as he mooched along the street in Azabu Juuban. He'd failed his entrance exam to Tokyo U for the second year in a row, and his parents had kicked him out after they tried to persuade him to lower his sights.

"I wish they'd let me explain why, instead of talking over me... again. Story of my life, I suppose." he griped to himself. "I get punched at cram school, and find out I can't afford the tram ticket to Granny's' place... Oh well, I don't suppose things could get worse..." he sighed.

A huge explosion suddenly roared across the street, as a hideous thing smashed through a building. People screamed, and ran away in panic. Keitaro shook his head. "Great thinking Keitaro... Saying something that stupid here..." he said sarcastically as the hideous thing loomed over him. The youma, as that was what it undoubtedly was, seemed to snicker as it drew back a fist the size of a suitcase, ready to pound the unfortunate boy into next year. Keitaro threw up his hands in a token attempt to protect himself as the fist flew in.

*THOCK*

There was a sudden silence. Keitaro opened his eyes, and boggled. The huge fist had been successfully blocked by his left hand. The youma stared at its' fist, hardly noticing when Keitaro made good this opportunity, and began fleeing.

=====================================================

Meanwhile, around he corner, the Sailor Senshi were dispatching another enemy, when they saw a young man fleeing towards them, screaming "IT'S GONNA EAT MEEEE!"

Pluto leaned over and grabbed Keitaro as he thundered past. His feet flew out from underneath him and he slammed into the ground. Saturn and Venus glanced at her. "Trust me on this." she replied, before looking at the downed ronin. "Keitaro Urashima? We need your help."

Keitaro blinked up at the green-haired Senshi. "Hey... Don't I know you from somewhere?" he asked.

Setsuna almost baulked at that, before she rallied herself. "That is as maybe, Keitaro, but like I said, we need your help..."

She helped Keitaro up to his feet, before looking at Mars firmly. "Watch him carefully, and see he comes to no harm. He's going to be important in the days to come." Rei Hino (aka Sailor Mars) nodded slowly. She didn't have a clue what Pluto was on about, but when she was like this, you did well to listen to her.

Keitaro hovered about, looking like he was about to run at any moment, before Moon patted his arm. "Don't worry, you'll be fine." she said. Her calming voice soothed the anxious ronins' nerves, and Keitaro nodded. As the Youma came around the corner, though, his knees began to knock, and it took all his effort not to run off screaming again.

The Senshi all started firing off their attacks again, while Keitaro watched, gaping. The Youma roared its' outrage and thundered forwards. The Senshi all leaped back. But then Moon tripped on her ponytail, and crashed into Mars, who ended up in Keitaro's arms. "Mars! Use your Flame Sniper attack!" Pluto ordered. Without missing a beat, Rei fired her attack.

Something strange happened, though. The attack started off normally, but then ballooned to the size of a van, and was blue coloured. When it hit the Youma, it literally exploded, rending the evil monster into bite-sized barbequed chunks.

Even Pluto stared, shocked into silence by the sound and the fury. After nearly half a minute, Rei cleared her throat.

"Um... You can let go of me now, Urashima-san..." Keitaro blinked, and then looked around. Realising the monster was gone, the full weight of the day slammed into him, and he gently keeled over.

In the awkward silence that followed, Venus nudged him gently with her boot. He slithered along the road slightly, and said "Wow... So that's what it's like... to hold a girls' hand..." in a wavering voice.

"Setsuna-mama... who is he?" Saturn asked. Setsuna sighed, and pinched the bridge of her nose.

"His name is Keitaro Urashima... And, believe it or not, he's going to be a useful ally to our cause... I'll explain more in a bit, for now, let's get him to my apartment." She hauled him up, none too gently, either, and teleported out of there. She was followed in short order by the other Sailors.

They'd only been gone a few moments, when a busty brunette girl wandered out from a shop and cocked her head.

"Oh my... Was that.... Kei-kun?" she asked the turtle on her shoulder.

Keitaro seems sort of...sort of really, really...really exaggerated. Like some caricature of Keitaro, instead of a real Keitaro?

I mean, explosive nosebleed? Suddenly fainting? Granted, he's had nosebleeds, but they're usually quite minor in the manga...I think. And I can only think of one occasion where the nosebleed was an actual nosebleed and not just a gag symbol that wasn't touched on at all, like the little corners that appear when someone gets mad, or the the bubbles that show up in a sparkly-eyed girl scene.

His last line does sound like something he'd think to himself as he blushes extremely heavily and uncomfortably turns his head away, or something.

I dunno, it could be I'm not remember the manga as well as I used to.

Well, let's be fair. This is Keitaro before he came to Hinata, so he's not yet been exposed to the rampant ecchi-ness of the tenants. And remember, he's just been chased by a Youma, and been in close proximity to a group of scantily-clad magical girls. Given this, wouldn't your mind overload and "BSoD"?

Considering that his only reaction IN THE VERY FIRST MANGA to being in the hot springs with A NAKED NARU was ONLY SEVERE BLUSHING, no.

Yeah, okay. I pretty much knew you weren't going to change anything when I replied. You never do, after all. :sisi:

I do take advice from people. I just choose whether to take it on or not. Besides, I couldn't think of a way to end the chappie aside from that way, tbh.

I think it's better, but that's just my opinion. I dunno, someone else may think it's still bad.

This topic is pretty empty, I noticed suddenly. Huh.

Setsuna opened the door to the guest room and looked in for a moment. Keitaro was lying on top of the bed, sleeping peacefully. Silently, she closed the door, and walked back into the lounge, where all the Senshi sat, giving her various looks. Haruka spoke first.

"All right, Setsuna. What is going on?" Setsuna closed her eyes and exhaled slowly before looking up.

"It's.. a long story." she said heavily. "Fifteen years ago, I took some time off from the Gates, and went on holiday to a Hotsprings resort outside Tokyo. While there, I met a little boy named Keitaro Urashima, whose grandmother ran the inn I was staying at."

Ami perked up a bit at this, as did, suprisingly, Makoto. "I've heard of it, I think. Was it the Hinata Lodge?" Makoto asked.

Setsuna nodded, moderately suprised. "How did you know that?"

"My mother and father honeymooned there..." Makoto said, before quickly changing the subject. "Anyway, what happened?"

"Well, Mrs Urashima; everyone called her 'Granny Hina' for some reason... Granny Hina asked me for a favour soon after I arrived. She was busy with the inn and her teashop, and when Keitaro's parents returned home, she needed someone to keep an eye on Keitaro. She agreed to cut a bit off my bill for me watching him."

"Anyway, one day, I was in a park minding Keitaro, when he met two friends; a Mutsumi Otohime, and a Naru Narusegawa."

Ami made a bit of a face. When everyone looked at her, she explained "Narusegawa and I are always battling to be first in the nation on the national exams. She's beaten me twice this year already."

"As I was saying," Setsuna said loudly, regaining their attention. "While they were playing, Mutsumi told Keitaro about 'The Tokyo U Legend'. The legend says that if two people who love each other get into Tokyo University together, they'll live happily ever after."

The reaction this caused amongst the Inners was... odd, to say the least. Makoto and Minako looked at each other and said simultaniously, "Happily ever after...?" Immediately both of them began to plan to pull their grades up. Hotaru sighed dreamily, and whispered "How romantic..." Rei didn't seem effected in the slightest, and Usagi...

"WAAAAAHHH! I DON'T HAVE THE GRADES TO GET IN!!!" Usagi wailed.

As the bedlam wound down, Setsuna found herself the focus of an odd gaze from Luna, one of the Senshi's advisors.

"What's the catch, Pluto?" the cat said. "Why are you telling us this?"

Setsuna couldn't blame Luna for being cautious. Had she, or one of the others brought this up, then Setsuna herself would have been suspicious. She sighed and shut her eyes once more, marshalling her thoughts.

"I was just coming to the 'catch', as you call it, Luna." Setsuna replied, holding on to her patience. "It's my belief that Keitaro Urashima, and Mutsumi Otohime may have been reborn from the time of the Silver Millenium. The catch is, that someone, possibly one of our defeated enemies, or even a new one, tainted both of them with a high dosage of Chaos Energies."

If it had been bedlam before, this double-whammy nearly raised the roof. Haruka and Michiru both jumped to their feet with murderous expressions on their faces. Ami and Rei were shouting to try and get themselves heard-

*BANG!*

They all started. Setsuna lowered the gun she'd pulled out of her workdesk. "Are you finished?" she asked, her eye twitching slightly.

There was a scratching sound, and Artemis, Minako's advisor, slowly walked in, looking troubled, at least as troubled as a cat can. Jumping up into Minako's lap, he looked at Haruka and Michiru. "I wouldn't advise trying to hurt Urashima.." he said softly. "He is from the Silver Millenium..." he trailed off, and gazed glassily into the distance. "Just seeing him jogged my memories a little..." he added.

All the Senshi looked suprised, even Setsuna, who'd only been guessing that Urashima had been reborn. Minako nudged him to tell what he knew

Artemis closed his eyes and thought back. "Setsuna, do you remember a mage from Serenity's court named Kranz?" Setsuna thought.

"Vaguely. Good-natured, innocent man, who tended to run a lot because his studies occasionally backfired?" she said, before the corner of her mouth twitched up in a smile. "Tended to attract women to him like flies to a honey-pot?"

"That's the fellow. He disappeared a few weeks before Beryl attacked. Most people thought he'd finally been caught by something he'd been working on." Artemis paused, then continued. "Seems that, Serenity knows how, he managed to send himself into the future, just like the rest of you were. Only difference is, his brains look like they've been even more scrambled then mine or Luna's. So much so, in fact, I doubt he'd ever recall his past life..."

Setsuna nodded slowly. "Ami, could you check your computer, see if there are any files on this 'Kranz' person?"

Ami began tapping away on the Mercury Computer, as Makoto quietly excused herself.

=====================================================

Keitaro stirred and shook himself awake slightly. "Wow, oh man, what a bad dream..." he said, looking around muzzily. He groped around to find his glasses, and donned them. Sitting up straight, he tried to recollect the dream; a strange one it was too, with mad scientist girls, flirty tricksters, and-

His thoughts were interrupted as the door opened, and a girl looked in. Both teens stared at each other for several seconds. Makoto couldn't believe her eyes. Could it really be-?

"Sempai....?"

Keitaro stared. Something about this situation, about the girl herself echoed in his mind, as he recalled a young girl whom he'd met in his senior year at high school.

"Ma....Makoto? Makoto Kino?" he hazarded.

"SEMPAI!" Makoto squealled in joy, leaping into and glomping tightly to him.

=====================================================

At that moment, in Nerima Ward, a busty Chinese girl with purple hair suddenly felt her position threatened for a moment, and decided to find her 'airen' and give him some of her too-too good ramen.

"Aiyah... Maybe if I do this right, airen will leave too-too violent girl and come back to village with Xian Pu..." she giggled, as she bounced onto her bicycle.

=====================================================

The Senshi jumped as they heard Makoto squeal. Minako, Setsuna, and Usagi jumped to their feet and hared towards the disturbance. Unfortunately, or perhaps, inevitably, Usagi tripped on her ponytails, and crashed into Setsuna, who stumbled into Minako, who fell against the door, causing all three to collapse into the room, where Keitaro was trying to free himself from an overly-enthusiastic Makoto. There was an awkward silence.

Makoto looked at her fellows. Minako was looking at her sempai with a look of undisguised interest, Usagi was blushing, and Setsuna-

Setsuna was still in her Senshi uniform. She tried to draw that to her attention.

"Um.... Hi?" Keitaro said, bashfully touching his fingers together and blushing. Minako recovered first, and put on a big smile.

"Hi there, I'm Minako Aino!" she said, moving over toward him. Keitaro shivered; there was something about the girl, some intensity, that reminded him uncomfortably of his sister Kanako.

"That's enough, Minako." Setsuna said firmly, putting her hand on the blonde's shoulder. "Can't you see you're making him nervous?"

Matoko had a sudden, horrible feeling of what was going to happen next, and began to frantically signal to both Minako and Setsuna.

"Aw, Setsuna, you're no fun." Minako pouted.

'Too late...' she bemoaned.

"Setsuna...?" Keitaro asked slowly, reaching up to take his glasses off. Another awkward silence fell as he cleaned them and put them on once more.

"Erm, who?" Setsuna and Usagi (who had been very quick on the uptake for once) echoed.

Keitaro pulled himself free and peered closely at the Senshi. "It... It is you, isn't it? I remember, from the park... I think..."

Briefly, Pluto wondered about whether to make something up. However, she decided that he should be given a chance. Despite all the crap life had dumped on him, he was still a good person; more to the point, a potential ally. She transformed back into her civilian identity as modestly as she could.

"Yes, Keitaro. It's been a long time, hasn't it?" she said.

=====================================================

Now, Keitaro Urashima may not have been the most attentive person in the world, as his earst-while buddies Shirai Kimiaki and Haitani Masyuki could attest to, but he was far from stupid. In his mind, he began to connect the dots.

* There was an honest-to-goodness Magical Girl before him.

* No one else in the room had batted an eyelid at this fact.

* Some of these girls vaguely reminded him of those other Magical Girls he'd seen earlier.

Once he'd connected those dots, he came to one inescapeable conclusion: This must have been the base of those Magical Girls, and they'd brought him here for some reason. The fact that Makoto Kino, a girl whom he'd tutored for several months in High School, had reacted so calmly also was a big factor in confirming this in his own mind.

=====================================================

Drawing his attention back to the here-and-now, Keitaro cleared his throat. "What exactly is going on? Where am I?" he asked.

Usagi spoke, her calm, serious manner suprising the three other Senshi.

"Welcome, Keitaro Urashima, to the headquarters of the Pretty Suited Sailors of Love and Justice. Don't ask." she added at Keitaro's incredulous expression, before transforming.

"I am Sailor Moon. Sailor Pluto you know." she indicated Setsuna. "Minako is Sailor Venus, and Makoto is Sailor Jupiter." she introduced. Keitaro bowed formally, if a little stiffly.

"If you'll forgive me asking, Sailor Moon, but why did you... I mean, aren't you running a risk by revealing yourself to me?"

"Perhaps, perhaps not." Moon responded. "Nonetheless, what matters is this: We do need your help, Urashima-san."

Setsuna took it up from here, but not before giving Usagi a proud look. 'She's becoming more and more like who she will be every day....' she thought.

"Urashima-san... Keitaro... You have... You have a very rare gift in your blood. Your blood carries the magic of the Silver Millenium, and it enhances the magical potential of anyone whom you touch."

Keitaro looked completely flummoxed. Makoto looked sideways at him, recognising the look in part. "Setsuna, let me explain it to him." she said softly. The Senshi of Time looked at Usagi, who nodded. "Come, let's let them be for now." she said, leading Minako and Setsuna out.

=====================================================

A few minutes later, the Senshi, less Makoto, were discussing how Keitaro's presence and knowledge of their identities would change things, when Michiru frowned to herself, and rose. "Someone is coming." she said, heading for the door with Haruka close behind her.

Opening it, the two Outers saw a very busty brunette woman looking up at the house with a serene smile on her face. Blinking, she focussed on the two Outers. Haruka was eyeing her with a slightly glazed look in her eye, before Michiru bopped her on the back of her head.

"Can I help you, miss?" the green haired woman asked. The brunette gave her a happy smile.

"Ara, Ara, Miss Neptune-sama. Have you seen my Kei-kun? I saw your friend Miss Pluto carry him away..."

Twin horrified looks crossed the faces of Haruka and Michiru. How the blazes had this woman recognised them?

The woman in question merely walked by the two thunder-struck Senshi and into the house. It was just as well for Mutsumi that the next person she met was Setsuna, otherwise things could have turned ugly, very quickly.

Setsuna gave Mutsumi a calm look for a few seconds, before nodding. "Welcome, Otohime-san. I believe I have something of yours. If you'll follow me, I'll introduce you to my friends, and then fetch it."

"Thank you, Miss Setsuna.." Mutsumi smiled vapidly. Setsuna wasn't fooled, though. Behind those huge innocent eyes, very efficient wheels were turning.

=====================================================

"So, Makoto-chan, let me see if I have this right." Keitaro said. "You are a reborn warrior-princess, from an ancient Kingdom that spanned the Solar System, which was destroyed by demons thousands of years ago, and now you and all those other girls are trying to restore it."

"That's about the size of it." Makoto agreed. Keitaro merely blinked.

Getting up, Makoto took his arm. "C'mon, I'll introduce you to the gang."

=====================================================

The Senshi would ask themselves later; Was it fate? Was it destiny that led them to that moment?

The same moment that Makoto led Keitaro into the sitting room, Setsuna lead Mutsumi in. The two ronins gaped at each other.

"Kei-kun?" Mutsumi breathed.

Keitaro was blank for a moment, before his memory pulled out a likely name.

"M... Mu-chan?"

Yesssssss...

*Repeatedly taps fingertips together, steepled in front of face*

This ...interests... me. Please continue.

Instead of the Hinata harem, he now gets the Senshi one, plus an Otohime. Watch Tuxedo Kamen try to push him around a little for his 'womanizing ways' (imagine the irony), or even touch him by accident, and watch the Tuxedoed Baka get fried by chaos energy.

Ooops, guess he shouldn't be touching Keitaro when their energies don't mesh well.

Here's a thought:

Do I dare make it that Makoto's Sempai is Keitaro himself?

I mean, commonly, the usual suspect is Ranma Saotome, or in one case, Ryouga Hibiki.

Enter the Otohime... Although it should be a challenge to see him dealing with that many girls.

He's even got the Shinobu replacement in Hotaru.

Although how Mutsumi gets put in should be interesting. Will she have a higher romantic claim? Does she fight for alpha status, or does she share benevolently like other fics have her?

Hmmm... the possibilities are numerous.

Don't count on Keitaro becoming a harem master. At most, he MIGHT end up with three girls, Mutsumi (obviously) one of them. As for the other two girls....

And don't forget, the strings of Destiny cannot be ignored forever. Sooner or later, he'll have to go to Hinata, and become the Dorm Manager...

Here's an interesting one: The meeting of the two (IMO) hardest-boiled female characters in anime: "Don't call me Aunt" Haruka Urashima, and Setsuna "Sailor Pluto" Meioh.

=====================================================

Haruka Urashima checked her watch irritably. Keitaro still hadn't turned up, and Granny had gone off on her trip. The dark-haired smoker did not relish having to look after the girls up at the dorm while minding her teashop at the same time.

"Damnit, Keitaro, where are you...?" she muttered, lighting up another cigarette.

A throat cleared behind her. "Haruka Urashima, I presume?" The only reaction she gave to the voice was a raised eyebrow as she held her cigarette in her hand.

"Now, I know that the door was locked, I always do before I sweep out the teashop so no one can try and get at the cashbox. And if you had tried to come in through the back door, I would have seen you. The only possible way you could have got in would be to either have found another secret passageway, which is unlikely, or you used some other form."

Setsuna shivered. The calm, level tones that Haruka had used were ones she herself had spent years perfecting. And the teashop owner used it as naturally as Usagi bawled whenever Rei insulted her.

'This woman is cold.....' the Senshi of Time thought, as Haruka turned and gave her an appraising look. "Urashima-san, I want to talk to you about your Nephew, Keitaro."

Haruka said nothing, but narrowed her eyes slightly as she took a drag on her cigarette. Setsuna suddenly had a nasty, irrational feeling that Death was breathing down her neck.

"What about Keitaro?" Haruka said.

Setsuna summoned up her courage. "He was... involved in a youma attack earlier today, and had his life energy drained." It was a bare-faced lie, Setsuna knew, but she had no other alternative. "He's all right, don't worry; we rescued him in time, but for now he's staying at our headquarters to heal fully."

Haruka blew out a cloud of smoke. "That's as good as maybe, but my nephew has responsibilities: Mom wanted him to come here and take over as the Apartment Manager. Heaven knows why." 'You're lying,' she thought to herself. 'I'll play along for now, but I will find out the truth, and may Kami-sama have mercy on you if you've hurt him in any way; I certainly won't...'

Setsuna nodded to Haruka's remark. "He'll be up on his feet soon, and we'll send him along. However..." she added, as Haruka stubbed out her cigarette. "We'll be keeping an eye on him; one of my colleagues has taken a shine to him. If anything... untoward... happens to Keitaro..."

Haruka's stare became a glare as cold as nitrogen. "Are you suggesting....?" Setsuna raised her hand.

"Peace, Miss Urashima. I mean no disrespect, but I have heard that some of the tenants here are, lively, to say the least." Haruka snorted in agreement.

"Some of them have their problems, but they're really a good bunch, once you get past the top layer."

"I understand that, Miss Urashima. However, the Princess wishes to make assurance doubly sure. So, when Keitaro arrives, there will be some people escorting him; good friends of myself, who'll keep an eye on him, and pass messages between myself and Keitaro."

Haruka stared into Setsuna's eyes for a long, long time. The Senshi had the uncomfortable feeling that the Urashima woman could see into her very soul, and was studying it. Finally, Haruka spoke.

"Okay then. I'll play along with you, for now. As for the future? We'll see...."

"Thank you." Setsuna bowed. She stood up, and teleported away.

Haruka considered lighting another cigarette for a moment, before returning to sweeping out the teahouse. "For your sake, you'd better watch out for my nephew, Setsuna Meioh." She said, looking out the window to the sky. "If he comes to harm because you did, or didn't do, something, no power on Earth will save you from my vengeance..."

=====================================================

Meantime, back at Setsuna's place, Minako and Makoto were glaring at Mutsumi, who was snuggled up in Keitaro's arms after having one of her fainting spells. Both the senshi were practically radiating waves of jealousy. Why was something they couldn't quite explain, but they did at least agree on one thing: that Keitaro looked like he would scrub up nicely, with a bit of work. He wasn't quite 'Studmuffin' level, but he had something not dissimilar.

Setsuna teleported back into the living room, and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Keitaro? I was just speaking with your aunt."

Keitaro perked up a bit at that. "What did Auntie have to say?" Setsuna leaned in,and bopped him on the forehead.

"For a start, she told me to tell you to just call her Haruka." The blonde lesbian looked up then, before looking down as Setsuna shook her head at her.

"Secondly, she told me that Granny Hina went on a holiday, and that she wants you to take over as the manager of her dormitory."

"Wait, dormitory? I thought she ran an inn?" Keitaro asked.

Setsuna shook her head. "Not for a couple of years. Here's the details." she said, pulling it from her stuffspace. Keitaro took it and gaped.

"An all girls hot springs dorm?"

Haven't read this one before. Interesting so far. But how does Ranma fit in? So far the only Ranbma refernce is the scene with Shampoo.

I decided, after talking with certain esteemed writers on this site, to drop the Ranma x-over, beyond tiny cameo scenes like that one.

I'm of the belief that there's something about Grandma Hina (and also Haruka) that is more than meets the eye. God knows what; maybe those old men who wander around town really are gods, and that Hina is their disciple, passing on certain tricks to Haruka; or it could be from her mysterious days with Seta, before Sarah's mother died....

Self-necroes

Here's an idea I just had, for down the line:

What if, the Shinmei-ryu was originally a style that was created to fight the Senshi, but over time became the Keitaro-pummelling power we all know and love?

If you are going for originality, I think that takes the cake. Heh, practitioners of the Shinmei-ryu instinctively know when the "great evil" is near... Definitely awesome for the sheer amount of coincidences and circumstances it creates. I am sure the background for that would be most interesting.

Now if the Amazons have a "regular" history, that might make an interesting counterpoint. Er, I lost my train of thought...

In any case, I do wonder if the amount of interconnected stuff will eventually make this unmanageable - or am I thinking too far ahead or something?
