Light Novel Discussion Thread

A thread to discuss Light Novels, rather than use the manga or anime threads.

SAO and Raildex already have their own threads, so discussion of them should go there.

Baka-Tsuki, where you can find most (but not all) translation efforts.

Feel free to talk about the differences between novels and adaptations, what you love or hate about the characters and so on.

For a start, I want to recommend Our Journey to the End of the Ceasing World - Its a story about a boy and girl who are on a journey, even though they are both afflicted with a disease that all but wipes them from existance.

I thorughly enjoyed the spirit of carrying on living your life, even as the more I thought about the affliction the more horrible I found it.

I will wholeheartedly support this suggestion. Tabi ni Deyou was a fantastic read.

My personal suggestion is Iris on Rainy Days. Much like the previous suggestion, its a single novel, not a series. A young female robot is taken away by the government department for robots after her creator dies, and the novel is the story of what happens over the next few weeks.

Also much like the previous recommendation, its a story with a deep focus on the appreciation of life.

Hmm... Neither are really to my taste. The first seems more like Kino's Journey with a bit of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and a lot more nihilism (though the point is that nihilism is not the point...).

My personal preferences are towards Legend of Sun Knight which is a gleeful takedown of books about perfect and noble knights. I also like Date-A-Live which is a kind of reverse World God Only Knows, and I desperately want more chapters of that.

Currently trying to read Campione. It's really tiring reading about a mc who spends most of his time getting jerked around by women which is making this a struggle. And I'm only on the second volume. -_-

EDIT: Bored now. Giving up. Do things ever become interesting enough for this to be worth reading in full?

The MC's true personality is an absolute dom. You haven't read far enough yet, it takes a while before he finally admits that he wanted this harem all along.

His first God kill is the most broken in the series. Between this and Highschool DxD, I don't think that new authors tries hard enough.

Read through what Baka-Tsuki had of Baka to Test to Shoukanjyuu.

I'm enjoying the series, though the treatment that Akisa gets is pretty damn cruel...though I realize that it's all played for laughs.

That said, Akisa is pretty damn quick on the fly while Yuuji shows just how much of a badass general he can.

Hmm, that's incentive enough. Round 2 is a-go.

I know it's sometimes hard to keep in mind that the girls honestly love him and want what's best for him. They've just had some really weird education so they're not really good at showing it. In any case, Godou doesn't really mind that much and he cannot complain as he has that outrageous Youth power.

Good gods, the Youth.

Dat Youth.

Completed volume 5 and I can safely say that my interest has been fully captured and the chicks don't bother me anymore.

Except Shizuka. She pisses me off every time she appears. <_<

Been reading Mahou Kouko no Rettousai. It's like Infinite Stratos, but with a much better plot and an MC that isn't someone that I despise. He's still hax as fuck and can dominate the opposition what with his "make nukes out of anything" and "heal from almost everything" ability, and people underestimating him because of how he's rated as a second-rate magician. The main upside with this series though is that there's actual CONFLICT, as opposed to IS which is pretty much just fanservice, all the time. Unfortunately, it seems like baka-tsuki is only translating up to volume 3 (thus far), and if you want to know how the story goes you have to read the summary which is available in PDF format here.

I gave both the light novel and the manga a shot, but to be honest, it seemed way too much like bad wish fulfillment. It didn't help that I found the setting boring, the setup uninteresting, and the main character plodding.

I can tolerate protagonists that tower over the competition. My love for the Masters of Rome series is testament to that. But the difference between MoR's Caesar and MknR's Tatsuya is that Tatsuya is a dull dog.

Might be somehow off-topic, but, spam, slowpoke, public service announcement, whatever: in Italy the first "Toradora!" and "Welcome to NHK!" light novels, as well the first two Haruhi Suzumiya ones, are available officially translated by JPop.

Ha.

Skip the first 5 volumes and watch the anime. That is what I did and it works pretty well.

I picked it up on volume 6 and it was an easy transition. Be prepared for magic orgasm kisses, I commented on that in the anime thread.

Edit: Whoops did not see the other post. But yeah, 5 volumes is when it hits its stride.

I'm trying to read Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?, but Baka-Tsuki only has a couple of chapters per volume translated, with volume 2 being the only one fully translated, so does anybody know anywhere else I could find translated volumes of it?

Or, you know, somewhere I could pay people to translate it?

I guess I'll add my two cents. about Infinite Stratos there is a plot it really doesn't kick in till volume 5 or 6 when the Phantom group shows up to try and steal several of the new Gen 3 and 4 IS units (ie alot of the first year Represnitive Candates). And I've not yet read volume 8 (just haven't sit down to read it yet). As for other light novels I've read Haruhi is ok but it has an official release in some parts of the world. Also so was Fate/Zero other than that I've not touched most of the others like High School DxD, WGOK and such.

On the subject of LN's, where can you buy them for an English translation?

I just read Psycho Love Comedy and I have to admit that it is extremely entertaining in such an odd way. I mean, the MC has got to be tough to be able to handle his harem full of crazies.

It's very fun though, but for now it only has one volume translated.

Does anyone know if Mayo Chiki! is translated anywhere? It wasn't on BT last I checked.

I thought Mayo Chiki! was a manga, not a Light Novel?

It's definitely a novel, but I haven't been able to find it yet. I do know that it's pretty much finished now though.

I am determined to get through Toaru Index. I'm on Vol 6 and I'm still standing, I'm still strong.

...I'm great.

I also read Waltrauge's Marriage which is written by the same guy. Funny stuff.

I started reading the manga of No Game, No Life, but the manga only had a few chapters. It did interest me enough to look around and I found the first few light novel volumes translated. A basic synopsis is that the two best gamers on earth are pulled away by a trickster god to another world, where said god defeated the rest of his pantheon in a battle for complete dominance of the world, allowing him to implement rules that become absolute law for everyone, like "All conflict must be solved by playing games." I'm rather enjoying it so far, but the translation is unfortunately going at a pretty slow pace.
