Apparently, we may have a shot at a live action anime adaptation that will work. Translating an anime series into a live action tv series just might do the trick, and the possible girl-on-girl assassination action should at least grab our attentions.

Discuss.

That one was my favorite anime at the beginning of the decade, and I still rate it as one of the best, so I hope that they are able to keep the feel of it after they adapt it to a Live Action. I'm more worried about the fact that part of the allure of the serires was that for once they did not focus on fanservice at all, the plot and the characters was the true drive of the series.

The other point I hope that they realize is that Kirika is a young girl who does not knows nor cares about what a teenager would be worried about. She does not use nice clothes unless is for a mission, nor she even cares about TV, and her only friends are hitwomen, old genocides, and an artist that lasted only the a few days before being killed. She is not going to complain about school, she will be more worried about the fact that she does not feel anything about shooting down twenty men if 5 minutes.

Not care about typical teenaged girl things? Kirika didn't even have a hobby for most of the series, and the one hobby she did pick up (painting landscapes) she apparently gave up after one episode.

Getting the point that Kirika does not care about the people she kills, but does care about the fact that she doesn't care about the people she kills (and, on occasion, the people that her victims leave behind), will be difficult. Chloe would also be difficult, as the persona she shows to Altena and the persona shows to everyone else are totally different.

What I'd really like to see is whether they expand the Soldat side of the story. Altena treated being a Soldat like a religious calling and Noir as the paladins of that religion, but the religious aspects of Noir and Les Soldats were never really explored in the anime.

Maybe if it does well they can do Madlax as well. The biggest flaw I found with Madlax is that Noir came out first. But hopefully they won't do El Cruzador de la Bruja, as the final installment of the Girls With Guns trilogy was terrible.

The report doesn't fill me with confidence.

I'm neutral about this. Obviously, anime to live action anything hasn't been the most successful in the past. And I doubt it'll suddenly get better.

Of course of all the animes to be turned into Live Action, Noir is one of the better ones. The story isn't out there like a Dragonball Z, they don't have to worry about wild hair color or costumes, and it's a story that at least Hollywood could readily get into without screwing up.

That being said, I'm neutral because we all know, any adaptations (not just anime to movies, but comics to movies, books to movies, cartoon to movies, etc.) there is always a chance, even with the best people behind it, will fall flat because they screwed up something. I'm hopeful this will turn out well because the people behind it has made some decent/good stuff. But again, will always see these things with a skeptical eye.

The most outrageous thing in Noir is that Kirika and Chloe (and to a less extent Mireille) are impossibly good fighters. And Hollywood's been doing that in action movies for decades. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

It's kind of ironic - I'm sure I read once that Noir was inspired by Woo films, as well as Nikita and Leon. Definitely coming back home to roost.

All they need to do is add bullet time and wire work, and all the set pieces become possible.

Bullet time is more appropriate for Madlax. She's the one who dances through fully-automatic weapons fire with her eyes closed without getting hit.

Plus Noir was quite tame with the superhuman antiques of their crew, Mireille was a good shooter, and nothing else, while Kirika was so efficient that she would only use one or two movements for a kill, and here martial arts were of the kind that she would just go for the kill without the exchange of blows common in anime and most actions movies. If anything she does not block, she scares the opponent into missing her.

At the same time they will need cables and a blue screen if they want to redo the battle of the first episode where she jumps on one of the mooks and uses his own tie to break his neck.

Name on anime to live action conversion that was successful.

Oh right. That's right. NONE OF THEM.

Actually come to think of it... I know of only one. That horrible DBZ movie.

Were there others?

Well, the Gokusen Live Action is quite popular, also there is the Glass Mask series, and the Sailor Moon, while having really bad FX, it was quite praised for the story itself. And Noir got the advantage of being in the same range of abilities of 24 or Nikita, therefore is a viable candidate for a TV adaptation.

List decent and good live action adapatations I've seen:

1. Death Note
2. Oldboy
3. GTO
4. Nana

Bad ones:

1. Guyver. Just any Guyver movie in general.
2. Dragon Ball Evolution
3. Uzumaki
4. Jigoku Shoujo Ai

Admittedly most of these are movies and not TV shows but the point stands. Maybe it would be better to try Japan first.

Some anime could adapt well to live action, with a big enough budget, but aren't likely to be, or shouldn't be ('Legend of the Galactic Heroes' is fine the way it is, for example).

Excuse the necro, fellow Noirfags, but something has been nibbling away at my brain for a little while now.

Soundtrack. A great deal of Noir's awesomeness was attributable to Yuki Kajiura's incredible soundtrack.

How does a live adaptation work with that? They can pay royalties and use the original scores, or license them and re-record, or sample them and whatever, right? Are there any other options?

Forgive the necro, but there's news:

<a href='http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-03-26/live-action-anime-based-noir-tv-series-put-on-hold' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>Live-action Noir adaptation has been put on hold</a>.

Considering some of the <a href='http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-08-13/live-action-noir-character-descriptions-listed' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>changes</a> they were going to do, maybe this is a good thing?

...yeah, fuck some of those changes. Glad it's on hold if they're really going to do that.
