"Lady Aoyama, can I hold the baby?"

"Keitaro! I don't think -"

"Yes, you may. Would you like me to show you how?"

"Yes!"

"Here... Like this."

"She's so pretty... What's her name?"

"Motoko."

"Motoko... She's so pretty! She's a princess, right?"

"Of course."

"Good. Motoko... I'm gonna marry her someday!"

"KEITARO!"

"He he~! Make her a beautiful and happy queen, Keitaro."

"I will. I promise!"

-------------------l----------l--------/------l--------/----

Keitaro Urashima had spent most of his life chasing a dream. Whether it was one dream or another, it was something that defined his character straight to the core. From his desperate attempts to make a happy ending with the girl of his dreams to his desire to never hurt someone. It was arguably his best and most outstanding trait.

So, it should come as little surprise that Keitaro clung like a madman to the beliefs instilled in him despite how over time his memory of such things became foggy. However, things had changed in this world, even if only slightly.

This was why that young man, Keitaro, was now gazing up at the Hinata House, smiling in remembrance even as he stepped inside.

-----------------l---/----/----/---l—l----l---------------l---------/----l

“Hello!” Keitaro called out, settling his bags aside and removing his shoes as he entered the living room of the large place. “Granny Hina? Motoko?” He looked at the world through his glasses, confused why the place wasn’t far more busy. It can’t be that out of business, can it? He thought to himself, trying to come to terms with the possibility that maybe he’d gotten the wrong address. Just as he was considering leaving, a noise caught his attention.

"Oh, hello. It's nice to meet you, um..." Keitaro looked quietly at the young looking blue haired girl, somewhat surprised that the girl was working here, from the sight of her carrying a basket of laundry that she sat down after fumbling it, just barely keeping it in her hands. The girl's eyes seemed a bit wide, like a doe heading straight into an oncoming semi-truck, it almost felt to Keitaro like he'd scared the daylights out of her just saying hello.

"U-m-hello. I'm Shinobu," She paused, looking from side to side and Keitaro -really- felt like he'd scared her at this point, deciding the sooner he spoke up why he was here the sooner she'd calm down, so he decided to interrupt her.

"Shinobu, would you happen to know where Hina Urashima or Motoko Aoyama would be at this time? I've been looking for them for the past few minutes but you're the first person I've run into." Keitaro explained, and seeing the girl visibly relax eased the burden on his shoulders. I definitely don't want her to scream or start crying. That'd look -really- bad! He thought with a grimace before listening to the girl's reply.

"Oh! Grandma Hina left yesterday on a trip around the world-" Keitaro's shoulders slumped, wondering why she'd sent that letter to him saying to come here in such a rush if she was leaving! "And Motoko is... I think she's running an errand in town, she should be back soon." Keitaro perked up; happy at least that he'd get to see Motoko after so long. I bet she's even cuter than before! Keitaro felt himself smiling, and he was glad it didn't seem to bother Shinobu.

"Do you mind if I stay here for a little while and wait for her? I've been waiting a long time to see her, even if Granny isn't here." Keitaro said, which brought Shinobu's eyes back to him away from where she had been looking aside, face softly pink. Huh, I must've given her a fright after all, she looks a bit flushed. The brunette male thought to himself, when a noise from behind caught his attention and despite Shinobu's gasp of warning, he turned around.

---l-------/---l---/---------------l----l----/

---l-------------l-------------l---------------l---------l

A random idea I had earlier while sitting bored at work. Instead of having the promise to get into toudai with Naru/Mutsumi when they're much younger, Keitaro visits the Aoyamas with his parents for (ghglsnglnabln) reason and basically falls in love at first sight with Motoko. Being a kid, their parents think it's just cute and nothing too serious, but Keitaro begins spending time around the Aoyamas (maybe once every year) and he tends to watch over Motoko very seriously and Tsuruko just -loves it-.

Obviously, for rule of funny, the parents by this point have just taken a hands off approach to it (Because even if they wanted to force the issue, they don't want to.) But Tsuruko? Tsuroko -wants- the two of them to end up together, and she is all too happy to show her devious and meticulous side in making sure the two of them -do-. Which leads to a modification of the original Promise, Tsuruko is the one who tells Keitaro that going to Toudai together leads to a happy life together, and he (falling utterly for the bait) promises to go to Toudai with Motoko. A little after this point the two families lose touch due to (mrhspaglhal) reasons and the kids lose touch with one another save for occasional letters.

Now, moving into the series proper, Keitaro obviously still gets kicked out and goes to Hina to have a place to stay to study for Toudai (which he remembers a little -better- why he wants to go there, even if it still kind of registers to him as "I promised to go there with a girl.") Though this time he gets a little more warning because in his last back and forth with Motoko (Or Tsuruko I suppose), he's told she's -staying in Hina but not that it's been converted into a girl's dorm.- So, instead of ending up sharing the hot springs with Naru (yet) he looks around to try and find (what he expects to be) cute little Motoko.

Instead, he (not literally) runs into Shinobu and asks her where his grandmother is, and if she could also tell him where Motoko is as well. Shinobu, not freaking out (because if he knows both Hina and Motoko, he must at least be somewhat on the up and up) tells him that Hina left shortly before on a vacation. Depressed, Keitaro asks hopefully after Motoko, and finds out that she's out running an errand. Feeling a little better, Keitaro asks if it's alright if he waits for her here.

Of course, this is where the proverbial shit hits the fan, as Naru (not seeing a reason why it'd be an issue) goes towards the springs with only a towel on, which leads to massive nosebleed on Keitaro's part which of course sparks a scream from Shinobu and leads into the near canon chase sequence, though this time Shinobu stands up for Keitaro ("H-he was only waiting for Grandma Hina and Motoko.") which sparks everyone's interests, making them needle him about why he's waiting for Motoko, since him being her grandson is reason enough for him to see Hina.

At that point, Motoko walks in, looks surprised at the male in the dorm (hand on bokken, ready to strike, Motoko-fare) when Keitaro looks like he's seen a ghost, practically spitting out that Motoko has grown up as beautiful as her sister, which triggers Motoko's memory and the other girl's collective jaws crash through the floor when she all but hugs him and -doesn't flip her lid-, although she admonishes him for "not knowing this is a girl's..." before realizing that she -didn't- warn him herself when she could have, making her act shamed and get -even more frazzled by Keitaro when he laughs it off.-

To everyone else, it looks like she's practically his girlfriend (because they can't reconcile the Motoko they know with the Motoko who didn't just Rock Splitting Sword Keitaro into the next continent), but it's not that simple. Motoko is even more nervous around Keitaro than regular males -because- she's known him for so long and she -does- remember both promises (because Tsuruko is all too happy to -remind her- if she does forget.) And while she's not sure if she loves Keitaro, she definitely gets that "I have a cold" feeling around him.

A slight change from canon is Keitaro picked up a little bit of kendo at Tsuruko's urging, wanting him and Motoko to have something in common to share, but Keitaro (still being in utter geek and two left feet mode) is just not any good at it.

It has potential. I'd like to point a few things I think it would help:

Read the last chapters of the Manga, and the Burning Blade Arc. Tone down the fantasies (or not, your choice), and even more the lessening of her shame around him, but not the dere-dere feel.

Think of how each character would fit the scenario, Especially Mutsumi (because, weell, no promise.) and Kanako (I'd say she would have a serious rivalry against Motoko here.).

I'd follow the anime meeting, everytime I'm to involve one of the more mellower girls, an crossover'ed girlfriend or something along those lines. It'd be funny if he came to visit just when Motoko was taking a trip, and got into a misunderstanding at the time. Then, he is out, Motoko arrives, everyone warns he about the pervert, she builds her rage to strike... Oh, Its you Kei. Cue the Hinata girls falling flat on their faces.

Focus a bit on Naru. Let me explain: In canon Hinatais divided about Keitaro staying Naru and Motoko against, Shinobu and Kitsune pro, Su isn't reaally counted. Here Naru is the only one against. Describe how she feels about that, and her attempt on trying to sabotage or understand the pervert.

Motoko: She is the character that gets the most character development during the series. You gave her a headstart. Now plan on how she will develop in this story.

Su: Su isn't stupid, despite being a tad out there. She will figure out that Motoko likes Kei, and she won't like it at first. Jealousy might get her to try to separate them at first, and later be protective of the couple.

Shinobu: Kei is out of the market, for better and for worse. I doubt she'd manage to simply suppress her crush, so you have yet another plot point, and one that requires a very delicate touch (which isn't neither's characters specialty).

Keep in mind these are just suggestions. Use what you think it would fit, adapt or discard what doesn't, and above all: HAVE FUN. This is what writing is about. :)

The (not so) stoic Kendo Princess of the Hinata Dorm is actually a closet KuuDere? Kei being a helpless (and hapless) romantic since childhood? I like it.
I'd think Tsuruko would use the Toudai thing both to help Keitaro have a lofty goal (since he's probably no good at martial arts or sports), and deep down, she's a romantic (not just a devious/meticulous troll).

As in compared to the above, or in the fiction itself? Clarification please.

I was going to have Mutsumi be the only -real- competition Motoko would face, because Naru wouldn't develop the same way without Keitaro hanging onto her.

I was wanting to stick with the manga, due to not having actually watched the anime. Granted, I also really should reread the entirety of the series again (perhaps tonight at work I will.)

Thank you for the suggestions and thoughts. I don't know if I'll even end up writing this as I very often fail utterly at staying on track when writing, but I figured I'd share the idea if someone wanted to pick it up, and I might fumble through writing it here and there, but I can barely even write one shots now-a-days. Muses are fickle, and mine left me a long time ago.

As compared to the arcs I mentioned.

Motoko turned to be quite a deviant towards the end, didn't she?-_-

Well, I DO prefer the manga is most instances. The good points of the anime IMHO are: Dedicated Episodes for Shinobu and Motoko's first appearances, Amalla Su (she is quite a beauty) and the twist on the Ramba arc, and a few nice songs. Other than that it didn't offer much.

Exactly, that and the fact that she could seduce her way out of rent with a male Manager.

I feel your pain. To quote something I said elsewhere, I usually write at least three ideas simultaneously, one of them being crack. This way I get outlet, and write something, but also manage to keep the bunnies in control, and get my Muse some variety.

Initially Mitsune was kinda ambivalent about Kei, she caught on about him being Granny's fav grandkid first and her foxy style shone through first (trying to latch onto either the money train or at least sneak off with free/cheap rent a few times). As the series developed, she became something of a tease and a bro of situational proportions (stepping away from Naru's shadow, remember she used to shoot down whomever wanted to date the firebrand in secondary and high school).

Considering Motoko has first dibs on Kei, Mitsune might NOT try to (blatantly) seduce him upon meeting... but the moment Motoko starts acting all Tsundere/Kuudere, I get the feeling the Vixen might find out they aren't an official couple and try to stake a claim on "the prince"... she already had to do that with Naru, about time she get a chance, and All's fair in love and war, ne? ;)

Tempered of course by The very nature of Love Hina messing with such things. Motoko being Tsun/Kuu, but messing others chances up (reminiscent of Naru), NARU messing things up, and of course the younger girls having that effect too.

And of course Kei and his habit of herping his derp.

I can easily imagine something like this during the first chapter...

Naru: There's a pervert on the loose!
Motoko: I shall punish the pervert!

Keitaro winds up coming in while dodging Su's attacks

Motoko: Ah, Keitaro, Care to help us find and punish a pervert?
Naru: He is the pervert!

Motoko looks mad.

Motoko: For peeping on the other girls, no snuggles for you for a week, Keitaro.

Keitaro gets sad.

Dunno if Kitsune should comment that Motoko kinda suggested that she might have made it seem that Keitaro had permission to peep on Motoko.

more like

Motoko> *fumes, shaking, face covered in shadow* you DARE to peep on other girls???!!!
Keitaro> No! Wait! Motoko-chan!... it's a missunderstanding! *begging pleading*
Naru> *evil grins* ...o(that's it Motoko-chan, let him have it!)
Motoko> My Keitaro does not find me attractive enough to peep on! *runs off to her room crying like some samurai period drama heroine*

Naru> wah! *faceplant*

Keitaro> awww maaaan! 'I should try to be more like the gentlemen in the mangas Tsu-chan said Mo-chan likes' *chases after his girlfriend(?) to try fix the situation*

Kitsune> I knew they were close and that she was old fashioned... but this is ridiculous ...o(and I have competition!)

Some snippets of further down the line stuff.

---I---I----I----I--------I-------I

Dear Keitaro,

Motoko informed me that you arrived in Hina like a rock falling into a tranquil pond, you never are one to do things half-cocked, are you? It's so nice that your Grandmother is giving you this opportunity, do you not think?

Keitaro smiled at Tsuruko's letter, it was so zen-like and yet at the same time so very active that he could practically envision her smile while she wrote with a fine and dextrous hand.

Anyway, it's nice that you and my sister are finally catching up once again. I had begun to lose hope that you two would either fulfill your obligations to our family! -

It was around this part that Keitaro began to feel a headache coming on.

But, that's besides the point. I wanted to catch up with you and let you know I was going to be visiting soon. With my husband out of Kyoto for the week on business, I decided I'd have a small vacation of my own. If you would please, take care of me for a few days while I come to spend time with the princess of Shinmeiryu.

It's getting worse. Keitaro lamented, already grabbing the nearby bottle of aspirin.

Of course I'm coming to see you as well! But after all, a married woman has much more to teach her engaged sister than her soon to be brother in law!

All Keitaro could envision at this point was Tsuruko's face twisted up in a mask of glee, and he could practically hear her giggling -now-.

On that note, Motoko's last letter to me said some interesting things! Apparently your-

"Nope. Done." Keitaro said, putting the letter back in it's envelope and shoving it in his desk. Somewhere, a raven haired beauty pouted.

----------l----l--------l---------l--------l

Another one.

---l--------l------------l---------l-l------------l

"Keitaro." Said male turned from his nervous pacing. He was standing in front of a small cafe near the dorm, the place was family owned and Keitaro had a habit of stopping by here if he had to go into the city to run errands. When he turned, his jaw (metaphorically) dropped.

"What? Don't... look at me like that." Motoko chided him, barely speaking above a whisper as she fidgeted with her long black hair, tied back into a high ponytail with a beautiful dark blue ribbon that was the same color as her dress. The dress itself was cut conservatively, having only a slight neckline and covering the shoulders while the skirt fell to her knees. Moving past that to her well shaped athlete's legs which were encased in black tights, he presumed, leading into a pair of simple white flat shoes.

"Wow..." Motoko's face bloomed with red, lips tweaking between a smile and a nervous titter at Keitaro's barely uttered word. The man, for his part, had dressed himself in a simple white button up, a jacket and slacks. All in all he hoped he -looked- more confident than he felt, especially with his mind still trying to reboot from seeing Motoko like a woman.

"Don't just stand there," The black-haired girl tried to frown, but her lips wouldn't obey, wanting to smile so bad at how even one small word could make her feel so good, "Let's go in." She grasped the stricken male's hand and led him into the cafe.

When did she grow up? Keitaro thought, Wait, why am I thinking about that now?! We're on a date!

--------l------l-----------------l---------l-----ll-----l

Like, dislike?[/i]

Spoil sport! :snigger:
Love me some trolling Tsuruko.
For some reason I picture Tsuruko getting a letter from her sister asking if her knight's "flying turtle" is supposed to be so... splendid, and the elder Aoyama getting both a laugh out and more reasons to tease the young couple, along with the usual elder sibling concerns.

Feel that Keitaro... it's the brainwaves of hundreds if not thousands of KeiMo shippers sending the force in your direction.
Don't stop it, accept it! May the LOLZ be with you! :p

Oh wait, that was me implying it.

Or at least one, you know, considering -I'm- a KeiMo shipper, unless Harem/One True Threesome is possible, then remove Naru from the equation, and SISTER UP MUTHAFUGGA! ... Shinobu is also fine, but is a loli/jailbait. OH GREAT LOLIONYALAPP, PLEASE MAKE IT SO!

Also, another future snippet for lulz. This one is a little earlier in the story, just kind of going through the same epiphany Naru did otherwise, but with less KeixNaru shipping.

-----l----------l-----------l----------l------------l---l---

Naru sighed, beginning to get frustrated with her situation. Ever since she and Keitaro had started studying together to try and get into Toudai, things had gotten even more awkward for her than they had been before. What does Motoko see in this moron? She fumed, not realizing she was staring quite hard at the brown-haired male. Thankfully, however, Keitaro was stuck on a rather hard question in his test booklet and didn't seem to notice.

I mean, yeah, he's hard working and even I have to give that he's a big softie when you get past the whole pervert thing, but still... He's just not much to look at, is he? She decided to return to her own test, mind wandering even as she carelessly answered the questions. And he sure seems to treat her right, too. Ah crap, am I being too harsh on the guy? Naru felt a soreness seep into her heart at the thought.

Damn, I am. I've been treating the poor guy like garbage ever since he got here. I'm the only one who's not really gotten used to the guy. Shinobu likes him well enough, Suu likes -everyone-, and Kitsune sure seems to enjoy messing with his poor dumb ass. Finally, the brunette sighed and spoke up.

"Keitaro." Naru's voice got a response from Keitaro, the man looking up from his booklet with a hum in question. "Let's take a break for a minute, I want to talk to you about something, okay?"

"Sure, Naru, what is it?" Marking his place in his test, he set it aside and relaxed a bit, spreading his legs out and trying to get some of the numbness of sitting on his butt for more than twenty minutes out. Naru looked wry for a minute at his expression of annoyance before schooling her features.

"I wanted to say thanks. You've been doing a good job taking care of the place, and even if you are a pervert... You're a good guy, and I'm glad I know you." The girl said, and even with the (back-handed) compliment, Keitaro felt a surge of warmth in his heart.

"Thanks, Naru. That means a lot to me, really. And thanks for helping me study, too, you've made a huge difference in my work." Naru smiled in turn, standing up. Keitaro looked confused for until the brunette spoke.

"Come on, let's go get something to eat. I'm sick of looking at these books." And Keitaro agreed completely, so with no complaints, the pair moved downstairs into the kitchen, chatting amicably for once in awhile.

Even if you are an idiot, I don't mind if you're my friend. Naru thought to herself, smiling as she decided to take a slice of cake from the fridge.

---l------------l---------l------l--------l---------l----------l-----l

Realistic Naru? OOC Naru? Etc?

Good Job. Pretty IC IMHO. (But you forgot to make Kei have a clumsy moment in there, numb legs or something... and then Naru lets it slide, giving him a light jab like she does later in the manga.)

There you go again Kei... getting girls to blush for you and you don't even notice.
Can't wait to see his reaction when he notices (and appreciates) his Princess grew up right ;)

Oh wait... something tells me he's at T-minus 3 from an angry girl shouting at him :p
