Lucifer on Fox has been a surprisingly fun show. It's gleeful in it's irreverence and has proved pretty entertaining.

Based on the [very mature] DC/Vertigo comic of the same name, but only loosely adapted into a crime of the week show with a horror/supernatural twist to it. It's only three episodes deep so far, and I'm interested to see where it goes.

Tom Ellis carries the show pretty well as the title character. He's actually funnier and more charming than the rather cold and distant comic version. Lucifer in the comics is considerably less 'fun' than this version and more businesslike and calculating in his interactions. He's also less brutal here, but that's kind of a necessity for broadcast TV.

He also puts up with a lot from both the human detective Chloe [Lauren German] he takes an interest in and his inhuman sidekick Mazikeen. Mazikeen in particular is a bit less respectful and more human looking than her comic incarnation. She wears a silver mask that covers half her face in the comic, don't know why they didn't bother with that, it wouldn't have been difficult and the actress still would have been easily recognizable wearing it as covers only the left half of her face.

All in all it's a poor adaption of the comic, but still works as a television show. Kind of like the Constantine movie, which ironically is a character that appears in the Lucifer comic. It's a pretty good bet that if the rights are available we'll be getting a cameo appearance from him if the show lasts.

Anyway, it's worth a look, and it has a good chance for shit to go sideways pretty soon once Chloe figures out just who she's dealing with. He's not even trying to hide it from her or anyone else really.

I watch it. So far it has been fairly amusing, but it really has nothing at all to do with the comic.

Well, as far as tone goes that's very true.

Still, you can kind of see some of the roots if you squint your eyes and pay attention.

Like I said, it's kind of like the Constantine movie. Both are good examples of the medium. This is a good television show, and Constantine was a good movie, but they are both absolutely horrible adaptions of the source material.

Though, I do have to say that it would have been pretty hard to make Lucifer work as a network television show if it was true to the source. There's a lot of extremely weird and fucked up in that comic, and I mean that in the best possible way.

This would need to be done by someone like Netflix, AMC late night, or a pay cable station like HBO or Showtime to get the proper treatment for the license. This is about as good as it can be considering it's broadcasting over the air.
