Augmented Reality in simplest terms, is having a heads up display in real life.

Like walking down a street, pointing your camera phone at a restaurant and getting a name, review, prices, and recommended dishes.

Augmented Reality is somewhat new. Perhaps one of the most notable excursions into this field is Google's Glasses.

One of the key... requirements for these to work is the internet.

Now looking at the Magical World, we see something much powerful than the internet... The ability to query (AKA Ask) magic itself.

A few examples of this are the Tempus Spell and Point Me. One of the applications of using magical querying to get a desired result... Pack.

Artifacts created that handle magical querying: The Map, Foe Glass, Rememberall, Sneakoscope.

With this information it wouldn't be to hard to conceive that Harry's glasses could show him...

1) The time
2) Peoples Names
3) If they were his enemy
4) If they could be trusted
5) The location of items if asked

"Glasses, When I see a horcrux, give it a nice green glow. *looks in mirror* Fuck"

Already a powerful tool... Start adding in things that aren't strictly in the books and it gets much more insane.

I distinctly remember a HP time travel fic where harry bemoaned the fact that he wasn't able to bring his custom, heavily enchanted eyes contacts with him. Contacts whose primary use was to provide him with an extensive HUD/Augmented Reality display.

Well. You can have Harry buy a basic version(auto-updating, time, compass and shitty night-vision) on his first trip to alley as sort of fuck-you-Dursleys shtick. And then turn it into a hobby to research useful functions and update them as time goes by... just in case. And then, by year six everyone will shit bricks as Harry's glasses turn into a Sonic Screwdriver of the setting.

More like the tricorder. They've already got sonic screwdrivers (wands).

Still, could be awesomely useful.
