Mass Effect Story Ideas

I don't know if this has been brought up before, and I know some people might not like it as overdone, but what about time travel? In stuff like Naruto and HP they're a dime a dozen, but I found only one in the ME section of FFN and it was some horrible wish fulfillment from the start with random omnipotent being entering story to do it.

However they didn't know what the Crucible would do until the very very end. What if it was the fulfillment of some ancient race's plan to reverse their defeat? A massive machine drawing on the power of the Citadel to transport someone/ship back in time. With warning and time to prepare they might just stand a chance. I think this would have been much more satisfactory.

Odd idea I had
****____****

The beacon, the second one, hit her as hard as the one on Eden Prime, and it was the same. Images. Vague feeling of hope, followed by something...cut short. An invasion repelled, but then something went wrong. Jane Shepard, Vanguard, N7, Spectre, wasn't given much time to process any of it before the floor gave way and she fell.

She doesn't know how long she fell. But she felt pulled and felt as if she were floating at the same time. Biotics, or mass effect fields, she realized as the braced herself. The water hit like a cushion instead of cement, and she pulled herself up to her feet.

The chamber she was in, was...not...like the main base on Virmire. Older, ancient. Maybe not even part of the main facility.

"Shepard."

She blinks, and looks up. Some shape is in front of her. Something old, and huge.

"Who's there?" Her pistol finds its way into her hand. For all the good it would do.

"That which you know as Sovereign is not what it seems. The Reapers are a myth."

The voice booms. It hits her from all sides. Discarded Geth, synthetics older than that, stand and puppet themselves, echoing the voice.

"The Protheans had been silenced. But on the eve of our victory, we were betrayed. The Weapon was fired and we were felled. The VIs-turned-AIs-turned-Exultant which the Protheans had relied on wiped them out. And then salvaged our husks as their new ascendant forms."

She blinks, again. In the darkness, she can make out the shape of the thing down here, and realizes it is massive. "Who...what are you?"

"VictoryViceroyVendetta speaks of you. You are a threat to the Unity's plans. They seek to empty this galaxy of life, and then use the mass relays to turn this galaxy into a base state two dimensional mass with which they will reshape reality to their specifications. We were created to prevent the ascendency of malign synthetic life for this purpose."

A being, vaguely insectoid and black, speaks. "We were the shepherds of this galaxy, who ensured the development of organic life and preservation."

A discarded Geth wobbles over. "We are the last of our kind. Hiding on this world for fifty thousand years."

A spider like thing with too many legs bows to her. "We will aid you against the corpses of our kin."

And in the darkness, there is light. Eight orbs of gold light up. And Shepard takes a step back to stare at the massive, cuttlefish-like dreadnought standing before her.

"We are Harbinger."

Ok, headache, gah.

So, if I followed Harbinger's little spiel correctly, in this AU the Protheans managed to use the Conduit. But the Starkid turned out to have been a malignant AI/whatever who basically pulled off the Control Ending on the Reapers wiping the Protheans with his new shiny dreadnought cuttlefishes, all for the purpose of...rewriting reality ?

And Harbinger is the only original Reaper who avoid that fate and now want to help Shepard kick the Conduit's ass ?

Did I get that right ?

Sort of. The Protheans lost. But the VIs that the Protheans used- like Vendetta and Victory- finished the Crucible and set it off, and then uploaded themselves into the wiped Reapers as their new godbodies. Harbinger barely survived, and would later more or less upload what was left of himself into the Collector General.

Consider how bad things are when Harbinger is the lesser evil.

Well, thing going even more FUBAR with liberal application of Rule Of Cool is kind of your signature style, so no surprises here. :snigger:

So, does that mean that Harbinger's attempt to create a Human Reaper is actually for the purpose of making himself a new body then ? ^_^

Okay this is an idea I've kicked around off and on since ME 1 came out. Crossover with Mega Man X.

How would the first contact war have gone with Humanity and Reploids fighting the Turians. How would the Citadel races deal with a race that has AIs already around for decades and working alongside them. Then the arguments of the Mavericks and dealing with them.

Also hows this for nightmare fuel. Sigma getting his hands on Dragon Teeth. Creating Husks from various races and them upgadeing them to Boss level Mavs.

I'd also love to see a scene with X speaking to the council on his races right to be seen as equals.

Having X be the first AI Spectre has some interesting potential. What I think *might* work is to open with X talking to the council after the first contact war, and arguing for equal rights. The council decides not to budge, leaving Reploids Second Class Citizens whenever they're not in human controlled territory, at least in Citadel Space.

Some Maveriks run to the Terminus systems establishing themselves as Warlords, which exacerbates the problem.

So X and Zero formulate a plan with the Alliance military (or at least some parts of it) to rectify the problem.

X changes his face has a false background made and becomes "Commander Shepard" YEARS later. Zero joins Cerberus as a double agent, feeding intel and tech back to the Alliance while keeping Cerberus 'Somewhat' in line or at least curbing their worst excesses.

So 'Commander Shepard' goes through ME 1 mostly as normal.

Plot point: There's a point in the the future of the ZX series where the difference between Humans and Reploids is insignificant so we'll use that to explain how 'X' was able to view the Beacons message.

Anyhow, the differences do begin to crop up. Liara realizes X is an AI early on but keeps his secret from the Non-human crew. This leads to her hesitating to get emotionally involved with X. Now 'Shepard X' secret is revealed on Virmir when Saren manages to damage him badly. So the truth comes out, and the non human crew find themselves wrestling with the implications of this revelation.

The Council decides to shut Shepard down because he's done what they wanted, and decide to review his Spectre status in light of his AI status.

Tali is the one that comes to Shepard-X to talk with him during the shutdown. Apologizing for her early reaction. The fact that he's been so good to her, better than many organics, and the fact that she bad mouthed AI's too him and he never harshly judge her for it get's her to thinking that, despite his origin, he really is her friend and a good man.

Anyway game continues as normal, with the Council upholding his Spectre Status after X saves their asses.

After that things should start divering in interesting directions.

Legion's fanboyism will be even more Justified.

"You are X aka Shepard Commander, first AI Spectre, fought against the old machines, thought deactivated and now rediscovered."

Mordin will be fascinated "AI is not my area of expertise but still you'er basic construction is nothing short of marvelous!"

Well...that's my thinking anyways.

I can only see this ending badly with the citadel races trying to Genocide the reploids. Especially when you consider some of the abilities that reploids have, it also doesn't help that the games seem to love to show that Humanity seems to have a massive grip on the idiot ball.

*Edit: although if you really wanted to try and make it work I'd suggest using the ZX time period, the councils reactions to biometals and cyber elves would be very interesting.

Think about some of the other technologies the Megaman series had: energy weapons and teleportation being two of the more obvious. X's ability to adapt and use other robots powers may or may not be adapted to use other technologies, I am not sure just how the ability works.

Source of omni-gel? Perhaps a way to bring it into ME2 or 3?

One of the original reasons I thought about the X series as opposed to any other Mega Man series is also when its supposed to happen. 21XX and the Mass Effect series is in the 2180s or so I think (I admit I might be a bit off as I type this as thats off the top of my head) I could see there definatly benig lots of loud cries wanting to Genocide the reploids but considering some of the Technologies that the Terrans (Organic or Inoganic) bring to the table Earth wouldn't be so obliging to give in to demands and some of that tech would definatly become a factor espeically amongst the Salarians to slow down any thoughts of that. Hell I think such a thing would be great for conflict in the story.

Crack beckons.

The Illusive Man isn't quite really a man. He's actually a woman. And said woman is a fangirl for Shepard (possibly even tsundere/yandere for him for bonus crack points).
ME2 comes along and hilarity ensues.

Well, there's not much data on TIM, so it's not a massive stretch.

I mean, people theorised that the Shadow Broker was a network of agents, but the truth is later revealed to be different.

Perhaps TIM uses a complicated VI to keep up the illusion of being a man (the name being something of a joke to her) in all video communications.

Maybe even a clever disguise for the meetings that just have to be in person.

The idea may not have the legs to go for a full-on retelling, but it's certainly enough for a crackfic.

Well yes, that was the general idea. It can always be further expanded on for bonus hilarity. But I agree that it would probably be best either as a crack oneshot, or a collection of short snippets displaying various amusing events.

Or of course, TIM going for the harem ending.

No promises, mind you.

Would be a shame to let an amusing idea like this go to waste.

I've got nearly 700 words for this.

Do I post them here or do I stink up the preview section?

Ideas strike.
in general, Mass Effect meets Warhammer 40k
Through the machinations of all the factions in WH40k, time itself is reversed, but against plan (or perhaps according to it) the C'tan score a conclusive victory. The gods of Chaos never form, and the Necrons, while far fewer in number have no opposition as they steamroll the galaxy and enact the Pylons, closing off most, but not all access to the warp, under the greedy guidance of the C'tan (mortals with souls are just tastier, and besides, not like they can do anything, right?). Further, they built the Citadel, and created the first Reaper, a plan to let the galaxy grow lively with future food, that the C'tan could harvest once every fifty thousand years.

And thus the cycle continued for countless ages, until such a time that one Jack Harper discovers a strange relic that begins speaking to him, guiding him towards odd caches of technology and proclaiming that he would be the one to raise the next leader of humanity to power, the one who shall forever end the cycle and unite the entire known universe under one rule.

I've been thinking of writing some Dragon Age 2/Mass Effect stuff, of the 'Dragon Age characters and events roughly taking place in Mass Effect's setting' type, inspired by some very nice crossover/fusion artwork from Andrew Ryan and LordSantiago on deviantart.

Andrew Ryan's Work; http://andrewryanart.deviantart.com/

Lord Santiago's Dragon Affect pieces; http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/180/5/5/dragon_effect_isabella_by_lordsantiago-d55ci9i.jpg

The Hawke family live in the small, mostly-human agricultural colony of Lothering in the Attican Traverse...until the colony is burned to the ground by a combined force of Geth and Krogan. Maybe there was someone/something hidden in the colony that Saren was after, maybe it was just an act of pure dickish spite, no-one knows which, but in any case, the Hawke family (well, the survivors, at least) and Aveline are among the few left breathing. After some discussion, the group decides to follow Leandra's suggestion and head to Beckenstein, where her brother has been looking after her (very wealthy) family's properties and business, and should easily be able to put them up until they can get back on their feet.

...yeah, they get there just to find out that Gamlen's pissed it all away...and Gamlen himself is in debt to, amongst others, a pair of merc outfits...

And then Act 1 starts.

Marian Hawke: A former member of Lothering's militia, and the most skilled sharpshooter in the (former) colony. Also more than a bit of a smartass. She was on the fringes of Lothering's only city assisting in evacuation when the spaceport, the rail hub, and the bulk of the militia was annihilated by a score of Geth Armatures, and her orders changed from 'assist in the orderly evacuation of civilians' to 'JUST FUCKING RUN!'. She has WAY too much fun with her tactical cloak, once she gets her hands on one.

Bethany Hawke: A powerful, if relatively untrained biotic. Would much rather study than fight, but in a pinch, her biotic abilities show much greater finesse than her brother's. Eventually ends up in the Alliance's Ascension Project.

Carver Hawke: A biotic like his sister, Carver is the 'vanguard' to her 'adept'. Though the lack of a specialised biotic amp and serious training stymies his efforts to perform a true biotic charge as some Asari do, he's more than capable of a biotic punch that would knock a krogan on it's arse.

Their father Malcolm was one of the earliest human Biotics, and amongst the strongest of the first generation, with all the negatives that entailed. The eezo exposure that lead to Bethany and Carver being biotic proved to be slowly and irreversibly fatal to Malcolm, and coupled with the rumors that biotic children were being snatched up by persons unknown, Malcolm decided to take his family into hiding.

Varric Tethras: Author, entrepreneur, and small-time information broker, amongst other things...though how 'small-time' his info brokering is is up for debate. An unusually short human, but not a dwarf. Loves no woman like he loves his omni-bow.

Aveline Vallen: Former full-timer in the Lothering Militia, Aveline joins up with Bekenstein's police/security forces, before later being accepted into C-Sec. Wields her deceased husband's mattock assault rifle, the largest shotgun available to her, and an omni-shield.

Isabela: Former Pirate Captain, though details on what happened to her former ship and crew are few, far between, and often contradictory...though she's very wary around groups of Krogan these days. In the absence of a ship, she's still a very skilled thief, and extremely dangerous with omni-blades and/or pistols.

The Elves...or ELFs: The tightening restrictions on genetic engineering, and the Citadel's ban on the creation of sapient lifeforms, should have been the end of the human Tevinter Tech. Instead, the corporation packed its bags and headed into the Terminus, soon after beginning the sale of, amongst other crimes against nature, ELFs; Engineered Life Forms. Looking very much like slightly short, slender humans with pointy ears (someone in Tevinter Tech's staff is a troll), ELFs can be crafted to their future master's exact specifications, or simply churned out en masse to make a quick labour force. There are hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of ELFs in the Terminus systems; slaves to their masters, menial labour forces, or labour forces left to fend for themselves once their job is done. These poor souls have some difficulties initially surviving outside of their assigned roles, but freed (or abandoned) ELFs that manage to survive have formed small colonies or begun to trickle into Council Space.

Merrill: Designed to specialise in all things technical, Merrill is a whiz with everything from computers to the drive cores of starships...just be wary of giving her a gun; she's a pretty crap shot. She was actually TOO good with tech for her master's liking; her extreme aptitude and endless curiosity got her left behind with a grunt labor force that slowly took up a more primitive lifestyle under the leadership of their Keeper, leaving the tech-savvy Merrill feeling sorely out of place.

Fenris: An experiment in creating an ELF biotic and super-soldier that had...mixed results. He is an extremely skilled combatant, capable of forming strong biotic barriers around himself, his cybernetic forearms capable of generating powerful, though melee-ranged Biotic Warps that shred armor and organics alike, and he can pull off the occasional biotic charge, but his mental conditioning...well, it could do with a little work. Fenris is a free man, but not by Tevinter Tech's choice; he represents a considerable investment of time, money, and research to TT, and they are eager to get him back.

Anders: A 'student' of the BAaT program, and a former Alliance soldier who served with some reluctance (he was after the significant enlistment bonuses and free medical care to deal with his condition), who was eventually given a general discharge on medical grounds. A biotic fitted with one of the earlier L2 model implants, with all that entails; power comparable to most asari, with frequent migraines and mental stability that greatly varies depending on how much stress he is under and what kind of medication is on hand. A decent shot with common Alliance firearms (assault rifles and pistols), and an experienced field medic. A keen observer, if not necessarily a supporter, of a number of Biotic Extremist groups.

Sebastian: Youngest son of one of the wealthiest families on Beckenstein, the hell-raising rebelliousness of his youth ended sharply when his father shipped him off to military school. After a rough start, the attention and advice of the school's Chaplain began straightening him out, until eventually the then highly disciplined and deeply religious young man graduated top of his class, and immediately after joined the Alliance military. His admittedly short military career has been notable, with Sebastian developing a marked proficiency with the sniper rifle, and he was being groomed for eventual entrance into the N program. The deaths of his entire family after their private ship was raided, then destroyed by Blue Sun mercs, has put those plans on hold, as he takes an indefinite leave of absence to take care of his family's affairs and consider his future.

Something I've been considering is giving Hawke a ship, to allow her to travel about without having to worry about the hassle of public transportation...but I'm not entirely sure how wide-spread private ship ownership is in the Mass Effect universe...probably not as wide-spread as it is in the Star Wars universe, where you can get a second-hand light freighter for around 20,000 credits. I was thinking something like this;

MSV Apollo: An asari-built light freighter recently renamed after the Apollo missions/spacecraft. The former owner decided on this name after learning that the vessel flew off the assembly line in the same year as the first moon landing, making the ship more than 200 years old. Thankfully, the asari build their ships to last, and this particular model of freighter is relatively easy and cheap to maintain and upgrade, being unofficially dubbed the 'Maiden's First Starship' on account of the number of rich Asari maidens who head off into the galaxy in one of those models. Apollo is somewhat smaller than a human-designed Kowloon Class freighter, but is significantly more graceful in performance and appearance, a testament to the asari race's vast experience when it comes to starship design.

The previous owner of Apollo was a retired Alliance engineer who bought the ship as something to work on as a hobby, to keep herself busy, and for the joy of taking the occasional flight. On her death during the combined Geth and Krogan attack on Lothering, the ship (amongst other things) was willed to Marian Hawke, partly because the owner had no living family to give it to, but mostly in gratitude for Hawke's company and assistance in maintaining the vessel over a number of years.

Weird idea:
During the Year 1190 C.E, A lost "independent" Batarian slaver fleet , through a combination of luck and stupidity happen upon Earth during the height of the Third Crusade. Neither knowing or carrying about the Squabbles below descend upon the holy land and enacted one of the largest slave raids in History, Tens if not hundreds of thousands from all sides were enslaved, Jerusalem itself was reduced to near ruins. Then the Batarians left with their haul. Earth Historians would eventually explain away the events as an Asteroid Impact misinterpreted by hysterical peasants.

The enslaved on the other hand. Well the Fleet was making it's way back to Terminus Systems when , again due to a combination of luck and stupidity, The slaves get out and through sheer numbers manage to overwhelm their captures. Leading to massive crash on a nearby Salarian Colony world. Most of the Slaves manage to Survive and are soon found by much more friendly locals.

There's just one problem, the navigation records for how they got to earth were lost in the crash and how they got to earth was just so chaotic and haphazard that no one can properly retract their route, effectively leaving the various Crusaders, forces of Saladin and assorted peasant men and women stranded very far away from home. The Council decides to give them their own planet (under temporary supervision of course) until they could find earth, they never did. Not even after a Thousand Years, until Shanxi that is.
