Materialism in Fanfiction

I'm an obsessive materialist who considers his possessions to be the natural extent of my body (just one I don't have a CNS connection to)--but I don't write fanfiction.

Remind me to at some point to include a totally inane shopping trip in Nu-Mantia. It'll be overlong, utterly out-of-character, and will keep interrupting more exciting scenes just as they're getting interesting by cutting back to a bunch of Dremora buying shoes and hats and generally acting like teenage girls.

And then at the end of the chapter they'll go back to normal, flip Sheogorath the bird for fucking with their minds, pile up all their purchases into a pyre and burn every shopkeep in the market alive on it before sodding off to get drunk.

Why? Because why not? Also because I'm on painkillers at the moment and it seems like an excellent idea.

What I hate is not so much materialism in fanfiction, but 'out of place' materialism in fanfiction...

I realize authors like to write about what they know... but for some fanfiction unless the author is specifically making it so, then items do not exist when the series takes place or the characters would have absolutely no ability or desire to get their hands on sometihng.

Example: extensive use of cell phones in fanfiction that uses series like Ranma or Sailor Moon.

Even some canon has overuse of everyday items... has anyone seen Starship operators? I happened to quite like the series... but it is sad to see the spacers from a alien government hundreds of years in the future using 20th century PDAs and cell phones... I cringed every time I saw the damn things being used, especially one scene where they were 1 table away from the person being called.

Of course, my own distaste for seeing such is magnified because I view most gadget level devices as all but worthless wastes of money.
