Mecha story.

A lot of Mecha stories focus on the idea of the "Alien Invader", often something that's been known to happen for the longest time by a small faction who prepared their own manner of fighting against the invaders, for given reasons. It ranges from Macross to Evangelion in terms of reasoning.

But my idea is different.

One night, several shapes suddenly show up on the Earth atmosphere with zero forewarning; turns out they're alien robots from somewhere far, far away. The aliens are not numerous because their arrival was completely unplanned; they were essentially teleported to Earth because of an enemy they were fighting, who pulled this method as an emergency action. The aliens are not specifically friendly, but the emphasis is that they don't want to pick a fight with Earth both because they, themselves, cannot fight off the entire army, but also because they're more aware that if there's a serious incident, their homeworld will drop the hammer on Earth. [Just because they're militaristic aliens it doesn't mean they're interested in fighting.]

This is what I have so far. Any ideas/suggestions?

Why do they end up on earth, given the vastness of space they could have teleported to?

At what point do they arrive on earth? Modern day I take it? How does the government they land in take their sudden arrival? Do they even make contact?

The other civilization was more on the 'scholar' type; they had a good analysis of this side of the universe through extensive observation and understanding, similar to our using the Hubble and probes [but at a *much* longer scale and distance]. Of course, that doesn't mean they were actually aiming for Earth; more that the coordinates involved in the teleportation were connected to the ones related to our solar system, and by chance, it was Earth's orbit.

It would be modern day, yeah, without serious alterations. Initial assumption at least is that humans never made first contact with aliens before and stuff like Area 51 is either truly myth or just misunderstandings [it just has very experimental science and things that they don't want discovered], and at the same time, there's no dearth of media like Star Wars or V.

I admit the governments are one aspect I'm not completely sure on [at least, to portray 'realistically'], but they would attempt contact. The interactions start on lower levels though, between the mecha having fallen mainly in civilian areas and locations where it's impossible to hide. And of course, just because humans are trying to negotiate doesn't mean they know what they're dealing with.

[Though I suppose something like North Korea or Iran would've gone with the 'just blast them before they can start killing us'. Depends on how aware they are that it isn't something like a new secret US/Russian/Chinese plane or something.]

Honestly, kind of sounds like Transformers.  Probably because that's the first thing my mind goes to for robot aliens.

I think the biggest difficulty this story will have will be portraying the aliens in the way that you want.  They sound semi-friendly, if only because they don' want the people that kill them off to b exterminated.

I'm assuming that they are stuck on earth for one reason or another, otherwise they would probably up and leave and get back to what they were doing.

I think a major event would probably be the best way to establish a tentative ceasefire.  Some one starts fighting and killing them, until the aliens manage a major retaliation.  It shows that they can be beaten, but it will be at a great cost.  It would keep the more war-like factions at bay, especially once they learn that the majority of the civilization will come looking for them.  Otherwise they might decide to kill them all and pretend they don't know a thing when the rest of them come looking.

What genre are you looking to make this?  Is it going to be an action/Sci-fi?  Is it going to be more dramatic/political?  Is it going to be an introspective peace about what defines humanity when confronted with something that clearly isn't?  You mentioned mecha, but we won't really have many of those at the start of the story if it's going to be modern era, unless -

Right now, assuming you're aiming for mecha, I see the two alien factions making alliances with various countries to wipe out the other side, in exchange for technology.  Probably ends up forming into a Cold War style setting, since widespread destruction is something neither side wants to deal with.

Could you give some more information?  Maybe an outline of the initial stages of your story?  It sounds interesting, but there isn't much for me to go on right now.

They're not robot aliens. They're aliens in robots.

The alien mecha can't make a light year trip to anywhere outside our solar system because the life support systems are not as good as a ship they don't have. They don't have one and Earthtech can't fit those metal giants just yet.

You're right that humans don't start out with them in this. Not impossible to happen through studying, but the point is 'what if aliens showed up RIGHT NOW and everyone was off-guard?'.

In terms of 'what I want' a part is showing the aliens trying to sufvive and scavenge with distinct priorities while trying to keep their mecha from losing too much power and risk capture. In itself it's conflict, but the Human nations obviously won't make things easier, especially with widespread 'ALIENS ARE REAL MAN' scenarios.

In part, what nations may lose control faster and make more mistakes, in this scenario? Like Russia [apologies to all Russians].
